Super helpful. New to to a gt-line. Had an i3 which was obviously antiquated, but brilliant when i got her. Sold a ICE stinger and the I3 and got the 6. Lots to learn as it does so much. Thank you! 200 mile round trip tomorrow. Passing by a EA fast charger before heading home to see if the free EA works and how fast! Woooooo!!!
Jeff, finally got battery preconditioning and parking brake emergency brake installed correctly. This is the first time does Kia dealer has ever done that so I took the information and then they followed it step-by-step this time and got it right. Thanks for all your information drove to the DC charger everything worked well and the brake is awesome. 👍🏾
4:32 the reason the EA would have previously been showing a different number for the charge is that it was using some of the charger’s electricity to get the batteries toasty (up to that 70°F / 21°C level) and not putting that amount in the battery itself. As you already preconditioned before getting to the chargers this time, the car lets the charger know that the batteries are already at optimal temperature, so the charger just delivers the DC straight to the battery cells.
The vehicle's dash gauges show the amount coming in before taking out the additional draws of power (electronics, hvac, battery care, etc). That's why it's typically more than the amount getting to the battery when you look at it in car scanner if you look at that field.
Your charging speeds are pretty much correct. Your state of charge was too high when you plugged in to get more than that. Arrive with 20% and you will rock that 230+ until at least 50%. Great video Jeff.
Hey Jonas - eh from what I've seen, it should have stayed a little higher a little longer. During a 150 kW charger test last year - ua-cam.com/video/JZiwLxMt5NE/v-deo.html - I was able to stay at over 170 kW until about 60% and it stayed at just under 160 kW until about 75%. We'll see what happens in my next test.
@@TechnicallyJeff Yes, but your SOC were lower, 20% then. That impacts the voltage and current the car asks for. I've been running this update since October here in Sweden and I get different results every time. 🫣
So you're saying the starting SOC impacts what it pulls at 55%? Hmm. And yeah it's not going to be exactly the same, but it should be somewhat consistent lol. I will say, it seems the vehicle estimates for charge times are very accurate (when it says like 15 min to 80%, etc)
Hi Jeff, love the channel! Just got my 24 EV6 in Nov, which is when I found you. Others have given conflicting info, suggesting that the scheduled cabin condition also preconditions the battery. I confirmed it does not using Car Scanner. But why not use the energy already expended in the heat pump to warm the battery coolant? Any sense that the 25 refresh can do this, or at least adds manual battery preconditioning? Do I just need to phony route so battery precon will start, then wait before heading out into the cold? Just realized car probably won't allow that while connected to AC. But at least I could use the battery to prepare for better efficiency and performance
Thanks! Yeah I wish it did that. The 2025 refresh should have a manual precondition button like the EV9. But yeah I wish the battery was warned prior to a trip. That'd make it more efficient. I supposed if you time it right and have a decent level 2 charger, you could to to time it to finish right as you're about to leave and the current charging the battery will warm it some. Not drastically though.
Our local dealer is refusing to do the battery precondition and e break update. We might have to try another dealer in the state. OEM manufactures are going to ruin the EV experience.
@@rocket1358 I guess they don’t get paid for those types of updates or something related to their process of getting compensation for the work from Kia. And on top of that they don’t know how to look up those updates on the system.
I noticed that in park your red emergency brake was on during charging. I saw a service update that made the car going e brake when parked. My car 2022 I have to activate the red parking/ e brake manually.
Jeff it would be interesting to see a "side by side" test. If conditions allow (two consecutive days with the same temp) to charge with and without preconditioning.
Back at the end of March, I did a very cold (< 0C, ~20F), 550km (340 mile) necessary road trip in my EV6 and never got more than 40kw at any station either on the way or on the way back. At the time, in my exhaustion, I cursed the whole infrastructure and only realized afterwards that my battery could also have been the likely culprit. I'm going to get my update installed. Another great video as always Jeff!
Now that there is battery preconditioning, what is the best way to update the Kia EV6 navagation? Dealer is do it yourself? If do it yourself is the answer have you posted a video on how to perform the update? Thanks for Ioniq 6 navigation info I think I’ll wait for the upgrade rather than engineering mode. Thanks
Awsome thanks hey so question I've been messing with brights and I'm wondering if you can keep auto brights on all the time with auto lights? I always have to turn on auto brights after auto headlights turn on. Do you know if there is a way?
i got the PC also, but i like to have a manuel option to start PC. Now i have to use my NAV and i dont want that. I drive a lot without NAV because i know the way and like to choice my own HPC location random.

What is the dongle you use to get all the data for the battery temperature etc and getting on the screen is another issue but which Odb item do u need and is it comparable with iPhone
Thanks for the video! Is there a button (or menu key) to enable preconditioning manually eg when approaching the home charger and the weather is cold? Also, what model is your EV6 as it seems to have the GT brake calipers but seats are presumably GT-line and not those sporty GT seats?
Unfortunately no button to manually enable it yet. We're hoping we get that in a software update. As for the model, this was the Wind AWD w/tech. The calipers are AOOA covers (I have a couple videos on them).
@TechnicallyJeff thanks Jeff. At least the facelift will have a manual precond. Will have to check your AOOA videos, too. Models offered here in Northern Europe are a bit different from yours.
@@TechnicallyJeff yes I just found a website that sells them. Sorry for my ignorance but apart from them looking cool, do they serve any other purpose?
Hey I did not. The battery preconditioning doesn't actually use that much battery. Mine only needed to run for about 8 minutes. Even if it ran for a full 20 minutes pulling 5 kW the entire time to warm the battery, that's still only 1.67 kWh of energy which is around 2% of the battery pack.
Can you explain to me how I can see if the software for battery heating is active? My EV6 gt-line is from June 30, 2022. It is equipped with battery heating as standard, but the software was not yet completed at that time. In January 2023, the dealer still installed the update, or so they say. How can I see or control if this has happened? Thank you for your answer. Gr. from the Netherlands
I keep the car on actually. But it's supposed to be able to be done in the background after the car is shut down. Personally I like to be able to keep an eye on it so I keep the car on.
Does the update have the same issue as Hyundai Ioniq 5 where in Eco Mode the car is all of a sudden insanely slow and sluggish on acceleration? There was an update since then for the Ioniq5 to fix it, but I was just wondering if this update did the same thing or if its a non-issue before I go and get my car updated?
I think you're talking about the one with the battery info. I'm running car scanner on my Tbox Plus. Check out this video - ua-cam.com/video/yUSJ6GuvTnA/v-deo.html
Hey James, it's very easy. You should be able to plug it into the obd2 port, then connect to it on your phone with the password (should be provided, usually 1234 or something). Then you just open car scanner and select that as the bluetooth device. You'll need to select your vehicle in the list too. Try to follow the prompts in the app and let me know if you have any issues.
Yeah it won't precondition below 20% to save battery (since it uses some electricity to warm the battery). And no the EV6 doesn't have the ability to charge that fast. Previously Kia had advisted the max was about 235 kW, but it was determined the maximum in the E-GMP vehicles was actually about 240-242 kW. But now I charged at 247 kW, so possibly an update?
Nice to see that it doesn't have to be absolutely cold outside in order to see the battery preconditioning in action. I presume it's been verified/confirmed that the battery pack temp cannot be higher than 69 deg. F in order for battery preconditioning to trigger?
