I think I am going to cry... :-( Rest in Power and Light Karl, you were one of the BEST of our generation of song writers :-( Thank you for the music and lyrics xx
I've cried more over Karl leaving us than anyone else combined. I've had conversations with him years ago and I wish so badly I would've told him recently how exceptionally brilliant he is. I also would've said "Please don't procrastinate this time. Record and release the material you wrote for the new World Party album. We need you right now my friend!"
@@peterthomas8744 yes, should have put Obamas Clinton's or the Bush's big faces there. No new wars with Trump. In actual fact he had the audacity to go to every threatening leader in the world and told them, Im the boss now. 😁
Wallinger called what's happening now in 1986, again three years ago and it's on our doorstep now as predicted - why are talented musicians and comedians more in touch than politicians?
@@GG-kc6ie No. He's just another puppet who plays "good cop bad cop" with his club member friend Biden. Their main aim was cull. Sorry to learn of the recent passing of this exceptional musical artist -- and lyricist, as this song proves beyond any doubt (so admirably perceptive about the state of the world). Calculated by Billboard magazine to have been the #184 single of 1987 in the US (topping out at #27 and spending five weeks in the Top 40), for me this was the #1 Song and Record of the Year, if not the Decade.
Yeah, that's why I never had kids. Still crying, though, especially at the fire scenes, especially today as we are enveloped in thick smoke. I am eternally pissed that one species is going to take down all the rest.
Prescient. Let it never be said though that there were not those among us who saw this coming, and who raised the clarion of alarum for all to hear. A third didn't hear, a third stopped their ears, and a third were unable to shout any louder. That leaves no one left. And it will. Have A Nice Day! 🙂
This song always resonated with me, even though I was only 13 when it came out. I find it popping into my brain now and again over the years. Today I unconsciously started singing the refrain as I gazed out the window at all the smoke, and so I decided to look up the full lyrics. . . and ended up here. I didn't know about this re-release, but goddamn that compilation of images is a gut punch. Nothing new, just all in one place, relentless. I wish I could show this video to my high school students and say "wake the f-up!" but that would be seen as too political for the classroom. (I do find other, less in-your-face ways to say it, but it's hard to find that delicate line of sharing information about the world to move them into action and scaring them into utter depression.)
I was 25 in 1987 when this brilliant message hit the turntables. It was immacculate then & it's immacculate now. The original clip hit TV sceens every Saturday morning as it hovered on the charts. The message was clear... THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WAS ROTTEN, THE BULK OF THE "GALLEON SLAVES" WERE BRAIN DEAD & IT WAS TIME TO GET THE HELL OUT. This one track all those years ago got my mind working on an escape plan. I finally got out in 1994. I've slowly advanced further out to a safe location 2hours North West of Septic Brisbane. Those who remain in septic suburbia & in city rat's nests now are living in prisons they built for themselves. Every breath they take is on CCT CAMERA & their data just accumulates for the vulture govs & corporations to use against them. A massive pack of zombies. I have WORLD PARTY to thank. I saved myself.
It's not the high schooler that are the problem.............it the middle-agers..................me me me, I, I, I, consume, consume consume, money, money money.......
I love this song and have for, what, about a quarter of a century or more since it was first released. This, Way Down, and Put the Message In a Box are ones I come back to year after year. I would love to see Karl on the road.
If you’re the glass-half-full type, you might look at the fact that a song like “Ship Of Fools” by World Party was written in 1986 as a reassuring thing. After all, if Karl Wallinger could have looked at the state of the world all those years ago and conceived of humanity as being on a runaway ship to Armageddon, maybe people who think that a similar fate awaits the world today can take a kind of solace in the notion that this particular songwriter felt the inmates ran the asylum even then. Or maybe that’s an extremely sobering thought to you. That could be why Wallinger has released a new video for the song, directed by Nigel Dick, that depicts footage of world leaders and social issues as the song’s dire warnings play out in the background. Wallinger explained to Billboard the idea behind the new video, “The world is in such a state,” he said. “The situation is getting crazy, isn’t it? It’s so ridiculous, this whole situation, mind-blowingly unintelligible. We were thinking about how do you make a comeback and decided to get very cynical. It’s a crazy place now, and people kept saying to me that it seems ‘Ship of Fools’ is more relevant today than when we put it out. So (the video) just came about, really. We wanted to do something - anything.” For those who may have forgotten, World Party was essentially a one-man band, with Wallinger writing and performing all the songs, while also producing and playing most of the instruments. “Ship Of Fools” was the leadoff single for the project, sourced from the 1986 album Private Revolution. It battled its way into the US Top 40, which, considering the downbeat subject matter, says something about the innate catchiness of the pop-funk that is embellished by Anthony Thistlewaite’s honking sax. “Ship Of Fools” takes the tone of a Biblical parable, with a smattering of mythical archetypes and historical atrocities thrown in as well. Wallinger doesn’t kid anybody about where this journey is headed: “We’re setting sail to a place on the map from which no one has ever returned” is the song’s very first line. He suggests also that human nature doesn’t need too much coaxing to take the wrong path: “It’s the place where they keep all the darkness you need/You sail away from the light of the world.” Some deadly sins are on hand to see the doomed passengers off on their journey in the second verse. Wallinger seems at times to be addressing the captains of this journey, i.e. the world leaders who steer their citizens astray: “Traveling the world you’re in search of good/But I’m sure you’ll build your Sodom like you knew you would/Using all the good people for your galley slaves/As your little boat struggles through the warning waves.” There is a comeuppance waiting for those wrong-headed enough to come on board, as Wallinger promises that “You will pay tomorrow.” But he also worries that even the innocent might get caught adrift. Hence the impassioned refrain of “Save me from tomorrow/I don’t want to sail on this ship of fools.”
When I saw the thumbnail I was taken aback for a second and thought, "Have they done another updated version of the video for 2022!?" - but no, they just had a really sense of where events were going...
