you just broke down exactly what i’ve been going through for month. when i go back to throw long toss, my elbow starts a pinching pain on the outside of my elbow. I also had tommy john about a year ago. what would you recommend to get me back to 100% before my high school season?

    • @OverheadAthletics

Number one would be improving the sequencing of the throw so you do not put your elbow in the same positions that have resulted in pain and injury.

Great and helpful video. It seems I have a similar elbow injury but I am not sure, hence would be great if you could share if you had treated something similar and if the rehabilitation exercises would be similar. The injury resulted from hitting a single backhand tennis stroke. The stroke ends up with a full elbow extension at ball contact with the tennis racquet. The action is almost similar to throwing a frisbee with the addition of tennis ball contact. If the ball is traveling fast, the impact on the elbow will also be greater. Each time I hit the stroke with full extension, I can feel the pain. Actually just fully extending my elbow for normal activities will also result in pain. Your reply would be most appreciated. Thank you.

These exercises will help with your posterior elbow impingement. Although a cricket bowl differs from a baseball/softball throw, the pathologies we see are very similar. Go ahead and try these exercises and interventions out and it will help with that pain you are experiencing!

I have hyperextended elbows (genetic) recently I have extreme sharp pain when applying pressure on the elbow while resting it on a hard surface and extending the arm in certain ways like swinging my arm back or bending my arm for too long. The pain feels deep in the tip of the posterior elbow and can be felt in the distal point of the Olecranon. It feels like a sharp pinch or a stabbing pain when hit ín that area, any ideas as to what it could be?? Also the pain isn’t there all the time it’s only triggered by certain movements that I’m still trying to figure out but it happens almost every time I put pressure on the elbow on a hard table or surface

hey! i’m 15 years old and i play girls fast pitch softball. after a little bit of throwing, i feel horrible pain in the inside of my elbow. i took a couple days off of no throwing only batting, but after 2 or 3 days the pain has slowly started to come back. (told to by my athletic trainer) it hurts so bad to the point where i feel like i’m going to throw up. it also hurts during the day when i press on it, and when i wake up, it’s already aching. i’ve been seeing it could be very serious or just take getting used to. if you could help in anyway that would be great. thanks!

During a skateboard fall, I heard a pop in my elbow (felt like it went in & out). Thought it was dislocated since afterwards I had about %50-60 range of motion and swelling.
    X-rayed, not broken or dislocated.
My hope is it was just sprained and swollen from one of the elbow bones coming out of it's seat on impact, & that the swelling and/or some ligament pull or tear that will heal on it's own is causing an elbow instability.
When I got into push-up position (or do certain kind of grabbing motions) I hear and feel a clunk/pop like that outside ligament is not holding the bone in it's spot.
The range of motion is actually back to about %95, swelling/soreness almost gone and pop/clunk seems a little better after about 2 weeks.
    Would you recommend these exercises?
Hope it doesn't need surgery. Thank you.

It sounds like you are experiencing some compression loading of the posterior elbow capsule. Strengthening the triceps and pronator complex will help alleviate some of that tissue loading, as we discussed in the video. Also, some anterior gliding of the humerus may alleviate some symptoms as well!

    • @OverheadAthletics
      @OverheadAthletics  4 роки тому

It is likely that you’re slamming your joint into its end range. There is also a possibility that you have spurring or irritated tissues in your elbow. I would first examine your technique.

So I got my serve action analyzed from a coach and I wasn't pulling through with my elbow which you talk about towards the end of the video. That led to me just locking out my joint. Hello, I have some clicking/crunching noise in my elbow if I do pushing and pulling exercises in a quiet room. Is this the same condition? I haven't had pain the whole time I've had this...but recently I have had medial/golfers elbow type pain which I think is the tendon. A year ago an xray and mri I had was normal beside slight fluid increase in the joint. Any ideas please?? I love to lift heavy weights but am scared that I'm ruining my elbow joint.

@@jimandrews8768 Yep nothing showed up on the x ray. The impingement at the elbow joint caused the bicep tendon to overcompensate when using that arm which causes pain in the tendon area. The doc said there's no need for surgery but I'm gonna get it looked at by a physio next week.

@@keeran9306 which doctor (orthopedic surgeon?) told you that? Why did they not recommend surgery? And what caused your issues? @@jimandrews8768 I injured it while doing overhead tricep work on a fixed surface. I think the angle was wrong and the ROM was too deep. The doctor is a general practitioner. He said I didn't need surgery because there was no damage to the bones themselves and no bone fragments that were floating around in the arm. I've seen the x ray and it looks perfectly normal. But the way the elbow moves in the socket has just changed since the injury.

if i hear grinding when i pronate my arms, is that fraying the tendon? i don't have arthritis.. just really bad tendonitis...

    • @OverheadAthletics

Grinding typically indicates issues inside the joint or on the joint surface. Bone marrow lesions, arthritis, etc.

Liked. Subscribed. Fantastic content overall. It's amazing how much better content becomes when you get more specific.
Although I have a long history of playing baseball & softball. I stopped playing in 2007, but I continue to play other overhead sports: namely Ultimate (Frisbee).
Because of my baseball history, I have a great "hammer" throw (overhead).
These throws are similar to baseball throws, but with different as you can see in this video of Brodie Smith demonstrating two hammer throw types:
    ua-cam.com/video/GQsZDUgxzDQ/v-deo.html (@0:43 and @0:59)
There are other overhead throws as well, but they are less common and put less stress on the elbow / shoulder. I used to be able to throw this throw 65 yards, although nowadays it's more like 55 yards.
I have been following the calisthenics movement and doing an excessive amount of external rotation exercises, only to find out I have GIRD and the "cure" for me was subscapularis activation isolation in end range (along with some of the other posterior capsule release / stretches).
But very few people on youtube are talking about how to fix internal impingement (caused by GIRD).
It's great to see someone getting into specifics of overhead athletes.
    Keep the videos coming!
