    Hi Doc!
For residency of Family Medicine, how difficult is it? How many hours per week does a typical FM resident work? Also, do FM residents have to be on call? I'm a premed, and I'm just wondering. Thank you!

A woman doctor is fine for women and children, but generally not for men especially if you’re unmarried and perhaps within 10 - 15 years of the doctor.
This isn’t to say a woman isn’t just as capable of treating a man for ordinary things. But as soon as anything starts to go into the pelvic region, the scenario is fraught with problems.
For example, I have been with the same GP for the past two years. A little while after establishing a CB patient relationship there (which had been assigned automatically by Blue Shield), my doctor prescribed me Prozac for my anxiety attacks. I had initially asked for lorazepam because I only needed to take medication on an ad hoc basis. But my doctor refused because I was new patient and she kind of suspected I might be a druggie (which is a natural suspicion to have of a new patient).
But I didn’t quit her practice because of this refusal. In fact, I myself did not want to think of myself as a druggie, so if my doctor is refusing, then so be it.
But she said she COULD prescribe me Prozac. Even though she explained that lorazepam could be habit forming, I was now going to have to take this medication every single day and suffer all the side effects (such as sexual dysfunction) whereas my use of lorazepam would be very intermittent, but OK.
And perhaps knowing Prozac would clobber my sex drive, this was like getting a chemical castration. But, OK. Fine. My main objective was just to pull myself together and focus on my work and putting everything in balance.
So fast forward two years into the present and I eventually ran out of prescriptions. My doctor called me into the office. Fair enough. It was at this appointment that she gave me a quick once over and, OK, I’ll go ahead and renew your prescription, but I need you to schedule an “annual physical” (which was now one year overdue).
I showed up for the physical and one of the office assistants plopped a paper gown on the table. I asked, “Am I supposed to put this on?” She answered, ‘yes.’ This physical was suddenly becoming more than just an inconvenience. It also starting to make me cringe.
So I changed into this cheap paper gown. I’m only 5’ 7” and 150 lbs, and it barely fit. It was ridiculous. SoI did that but left my underwear on.
In my view, all she had to was make sure the Prozac wasn’t going to kill me anytime soon.
After checking my ears, nose and throat, she put the stethoscope to my chest and listened to my heart and lungs, etc. I don’t have any chronic diseases, so check that box off too.
Next she had me lie down on the exam table. I don’t remember at what point this other woman entered to “chaperone.” She might have been there the whole time. But now I was becoming increasingly aware of her presence. My doctor palpated each side of abdomen, blah, blah, blah. Next she lifted up the gown from the bottom and noticed I was still wearing my underwear which she then told me to remove?
Now all of a sudden, I’m getting _really_ uncomfortable. I’ve got not one but TWO women seeing me in the least desirable position, and then my doctor proceeds to start checking all my genitalia. I’m thinking to myself,”Good God. You have to check my BALLS to prescribe me PROZAC!? And check me for a HERNIA too? On BOTH SIDES? Holy f/ck!”
Can you imagine a MALE doctor who’s about 10 years old than his FEMALE patient and has to put his fingers into her vagina in order for her to continue to get the PSYCHOTROPIC that HE HIMSELF prescribed and now she’s chemically dependent upon?! And then WITHOUT asking the patient brings in a MALE ‘chaperone?!’
No. This situation is TOTALLY hideous, but that’s exactly what happened to me.
And, of course, don’t even TRY complaining about any of this. Who is this female ‘chaperone’ going to side with? The ladies are going to back each other up 100%.
Apparently it quite common for female doctors to ambush their male patients this way.
Not only is it two females against one male in #MeToo world we live in, but I’ve been taking a psychotropic drug for the past two years too.
So, basically, I presumed to be a little crazy or otherwise suffering from diminished mental health. I have zero credibility in any circumstance.
Please, gentlemen. Don’t go to a woman doctor because you have ZERO power as a patient. Just go to a man, and be done with it.
