I've heard this song hundreds of times. One day I may get tired of it, but it hasn't happened yet. The solo was by Larry Carleton, who also played on Kid Charlemagne - both arguably among the greatest Steely Dan solos. Love that you're going through the whole catalog - Enjoy!
give it up for the legendary Larry Carlton on guitar !!!!!
Steely Dan is my favorite. Enjoying this journey with you. So much of their great stuff yet to come!
This was a HUGE song for me when I was a kid, especially as a young guitarist.
Same here. Top shelf stuff.
Love this song. Larry Carlton is fire on guitar here.
Greatest guitar solo to open a song ever!
One of the best guitar intros ever
Another honest heartfelt reaction. This song is likely grow on you. The Royal Scam might be my desert island album, for real. I don't want to be without it. Of course, I've been tasting it since high school. It's a masterpiece. Keep on keeping on, Man. I value you exposing your exploration.
Larry Carlton on the guitar. He's played so MANY of my Steely Dan favorites. Loved the reaction. Thank you.
Larry Carlton is the KING. My brother used to play a live Crusaders album called Scratch when I was growing up, Larry played on that too. As he's introduced on Scratch, Larry is a beautiful cat
Larry Carlton and his Gibson ES 335. Magic.
This song is essentially a minor Blues w/ altered changes. The guitar is the star indeed.
Guitar player for sure.
Appreciate anyone who is open to any genre of music. Not every song or performance is good enough to keep in a rotation or even to listen to a second time, but without an open mind and ears you may miss out on a number of gems. Well done, sir.
Larry Carlton bends are legend, and so much so that at times I have to ask myself, "Did he just bend that, or was it everyone else that bent?"
I absolutely love this song !!
These white boys were pure soul funk!
One of my favorite songs 💯🚀
Yes, this song has a heck of a hook. The clear, crisp vocals and their perfect musical craftmanship alone is iust fantastic technically. I have never heard one of their songs I did not like just because of their perfection in playing. Hope that made sense😂😂😂😂 Love your reactions!
Wonder where he got a case of dynamite? Acme, probably...
James Colley, possibly Antifa or BLM . Next I’d check the Democrat Party.
"I've got an anvil in the sky~
I could hold out here all night"
@@tinypurplefishesrunlaughin8052 AssHole!!!
@@tinypurplefishesrunlaughin8052 I'm sure hat the Bureau of Land Management has a case or two somewhere
Royal Scam is a very guitar driven album. It’s my favorite Dan album and probably my desert island album.
Larry Carlton at his best. He is a case of dynamite on this record.
saw the Dan in LA a few yrs back and Larry Carlton was smoking hot, the whole band was jelled together like a good sweet potato pie
Right on with the guitar being the main carriage of content, almost being the "voice" of the lyrical intent of the track... whereas the vocals were almost part of the rhythm section... manning the bridges to how the guitar seethed with its story. Good channel, gratitude. 🤟
This song is about the bombing of Sterling Hall at the University of Wisconsin in 1970. There were 4 guys who planted the bomb. One professor was killed as a result of the bombing. The lyrics pertain to catching the last fugitive of the bombing. He was apprehended in California but there was no standoff. He surrendered peacefully when the police found him in his apartment. His father was a bookkeeper from Portland, Oregon. Steely Dan took some artistic license with the story. Great song and love Larry Carleton's opening solo.
The short, ascending background vocals right in the middle of the song are just so luscious. Sadly, they only do it once.
Great one! Too many memories, though😢
Love Steely Dan. Recommend the song Aja, very jazzy, famous drumming, can't miss
Check out "Haitian Divorce". Really interesting guitar riffs , run through a "TalkBox" throughout the song. Love it!
It's about couples going to Haiti for a quickie divorce without all the legal red tape.
Larry Carlton! Kid Charlemagne, as well.
One of my all time favorites from one of my all time favorites
Larry Carlton! Larry Carlton! The master of jazz-rock guitar! Did I mention that was Larry Carlton?
Great Music. This is a fantastic album and the next 2 aren't too shabby either. Great reactions too!
Sprinkles of Jeff Beck
Yes of course outstanding guitar work by Larry Carlton, but for me this song hasn’t aged as well as a lot of their other tracks, and sounds very “70’s”.
Not that that’s a bad thing lol!
If you take the main riff from “Witchy Woman” by the Eagles, and mix it with “Magic Man” by Heart, you basically get this song. Not in subject matter of course, but in the vibe and feel.
🎸😎
Kind of reminds me of the first song you ever did by SD, Reelin’ in the Years. Both songs have that killer opening guitar solo. As you see by the other comments, the one and only Larry Carlton on lead on this one. Killer keyboard work on the next track. Inching ever closer to Aja my man!
Bad Sneakers
He did that one👍🏼
Greatness..
I loved the Hillstreet Blues theme, and Who's the Boss theme. Mr. 335
Great intro Great song
thank you for all! this is my favorite after bodhiswhatever and Babyon Sisters
Larry Carlton!
Hello my friend. I sang this song in a cover band and believe me it was not so easy. Great song, and as you said, the guitar parts are certainly the main focus of the song. If you would like to hear some of my latest music it is available on UA-cam. Check out Need To feel John Stephen Frank and Vic-Here We are. Keep doing what you're doing and continue to enjoy all this great music. Peace. John.
Larry Carlton smooth as butter yo
Walter and Donald musical short stories. They read a lot of stuff. News articles...science fiction...history...the story is always there in each song. And as compelling as the music itself...Imo.
Steely Dan and Alan Parsons progressive rock greats
Donald loves long intros and fading outs me too !
Mr 335 in full flow here.
Nice, or maybe how you speak - fire, thank you man!
Check out the song King Of The World, one of my Steely Dan song
Interesting lyrics, but great song
Will Green Earrings top the First 2 songs for Dramasyd? Me thinks yes!
Nice statement of blistering guitars. Other than the bad pronunciation of "Oregon," its a topper
The east coast pronunciation lol. I grew up in Oregon, moved to Alaska when I was 18 and everyone here sounded Canadian to me. I can’t here it anymore, maybe I sound like that now lol.
Guitar...star.. perfect recognition. An odd observation, "bookkeeper's son", there was an infamous Nazi genocidal murderer who was ostensibly a bookkeeper's son. May be a stretch, dunno.
My eyes popped wide open after clearly and unmistakably hearing--thanks mostly to having bought top-of-the-line headphones and native keen hearing, besides--one particular word mistakenly written/assumed by SD fanatics (and lesser aficionados) ever since the LP was distributed. I succinctly heard, "...well I crossed my OWN man back in Oregon..." Exsqueeze me, but HUH? Holy kwap, that actually adds some sense to those storytelling lyrics. Kudos to Beyerdynamic audio for great headphones!
Royal scam, dark...intriguing.
Please check out edger winter. Give it everything you got. BANGER
Damn.. the lyrics fit perfectly for what is happening with the "off their meds" rioters in Portland, .. right now.... 2020 August for a time stamp.. For time travelers I say Trump will win because of it...
What meds are the Trumptards on the streets there on?
😊 We really, really got the groove.... 🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
I agree with you that the lead guitar is brilliant in this song though the lyrics and vocals were just okay.
