That's Walter soloing on guitar - he had a uniquely spare yet bluesy style, and hey he helped write those wonderful key changes so he knew how to ride them. :-D I love how he and Donald took the "write a movie outro" brief and made it theirs - yes there's strings and other little movie-soundtrack touches but the groove and style and snark is all theirs.
For the last 20 yrs my signature in my email says No Static At All. I love the responses I always get. Once you get Steely Dan you see the world differently.
Watching a documentary on them, Walter Becker told the story about how he and Donald Fagen as New York City boys, would often write about life on the West Coast / LA. When they got a chance to do some producing for ABC in LA, they jumped at the chance to live out there, and according to Walter, after moving west, immediately started writing about New York.
Gino Vannelli - Brother to Brother ( Live Montreal 1991 ) will change how you look at live music. Musicians that bring you to a new understanding of jazz, pop, and rock.
I was watching your body language and after about the first 45 seconds I could tell you are hooked peerage, welcome to the rabbit hole known as Steely Dan. On one of the FM stations here in Atlanta one of the disc jockeys on his last day, last show before retiring played this and I can guarantee you you could feel the emotion. It was a great way to go out with style and class
This is theme song for a movie called FM. I remember calling into an Atlanta rock station and winning tickets to the movie when I was 16 (1978). Great song and great reaction! Love Steely Dan!!
I was one who was not a big fan of SteelyDan. So color me surprised when I started looking forward to their videos showing up on your channels. While i am not a "superfan" (lol) I have come to appreciate the masterfulness with which their songs are presented. Tldr: Thanks for sharing. I enjoy SD much more now! 😆🤣
Great review man! When you consider the 40 year, 12 studio album legacy of Steely Dan and Mr.,Fagen, their contribution to pop music is almost too much to be appreciated until that sad terrible day Donald leaves us also. Maybe only then will folks realize how much we miss those two GENIUSES as you aptly call them!
I and a friend, a band member, went to go see the movie FM because Steely Dan wrote this title song. I remember the movie, okay, but the song still lives on much more than the memory of the movie. I was hoping for the version with the sax outtro, but this will do. Hope you give that a listen in your spare time, and will enjoy it also. Thanks for putting this out there. Till the next time. By the way, Cousin Dupree.
I love the sax outro, but this is the original track with the amazing Walter guitar solo. The sax solo in the coda was a "reprise" track at the end of the soundtrack album.
Hello, just wanted to tell you I enjoy your album reactions. Listening to them started me on my own journey of listening to albums. I've started with Fleetwood Mac pre-Lindsay and Stevie. Their sound was very bluesy and I'm loving it. So just wanted to say thank you for reintroducing me to my love of music.
Wow! I had forgotten about this favorite! Thank you. I'm at work grooving along with you. Trying not to sing out loud with my headphones on (I'm an accountant!) HAHAHAHA!!
No static at all! That's the way my day has gone today! It's been a beautiful day and I've had a great birthday! Thanks for the smooth jams! Since you enjoy saxophone, what do you think of Clarence Clemmons (RIP)? He was in the E Street Band with Bruce Springsteen. The song 10th Avenue Freezeout tells the story of how the band came together.
Hey, nice that you gave us a little surprise SD track today. FM is a terrific song which you probably know never appeared on any SD album. It was only on the FM movie soundtrack. This was the abridged version but I’ll take what I can get when it comes to the Dan. Thank you for reacting to this and your comments which show your true love for what Walter and Donald created. 🔥🔥🔥🙏
Not abridged, this was the original track on the soundtrack album. There was also a "reprise" track at the end of said album which was the coda with an extra sax solo. Then for a compilation someone had the terrible idea of replacing Walter's outro with the sax solo, which is great but NOT the original track.
It's too bad you didn't hear the extended version with the sax outro as well as guitar. Perhaps you will check that out for yourself in the future. I know you would enjoy.
I still can't understand why this masterpiece wasn't a bigger hit here in the UK; can only think it was too sophisticated. As others have mentioned there's a version with a glorious sax outro, rather than the Dave Gilmourish guitar. Here's an informative hybrid of both = > ua-cam.com/video/316mipUnA-M/v-deo.html
This (with Walter's great guitar solo) was the original track on the movie album. There was a reprise track at the end of that album with a sax solo outro. In a later compilation the original guitar outro solo was replaced by the sax (wrong move imho). Now there's a mix someone made with both the guitar and sax solos in the coda.
I cannot hear FM too many times. It is my favorite of all the Steely Dan songs, and I love ALL of the Steely Dan songs.
No bad Dan....
Who doesn’t become a Steely Dan fan after hearing them?
They say Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band. Such silky smooth funk!
No wasted sounds, everything seems to fit perfectly, like the sax in the middle and the bongos sprinkled in at the end here in FM

When you mature into steely dan, all the music 🎶 becomes important.
It is truly a graduation of the mind and soul . Which leads to appreciation.
Whatever they heard in their head... they seemed to nail every time.
For the last 20 yrs my signature in my email says No Static At All. I love the responses I always get. Once you get Steely Dan you see the world differently.
There is an extended version here on YT with a longer sax solo and outro that you should seek out to enjoy.

When they got a chance to do some producing for ABC in LA, they jumped at the chance to live out there, and according to Walter, after moving west, immediately started writing about New York.

And on that guitar solo? The late great Walter Becker. His finest solo, imho.
I agree. The solo that made me grab a guitar for the first time at 16
He never over-played, fabulous tasty licks here.
Steely Dan is *beyond* my favorite "group." They are the standard of great music.
Their entire box set fills the CD changer in my truck , and a flash drive on my computers at home and work. Yeah , I like 'em.
The backing vocals were done by Glen Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit. Pretty nice when you can get The Eagles main vocalists to do back vox.

Steely Dan was one of the best late evening chill music of the seventies.
Greatness FM from Steely Dan 👍another gem 💎 is True Companion Donald Fagen Heavy Metal Sound track thanks Michael !
You can't go wrong with Steely Dan, this one just totally jams.
This is my favorite Steely Dan song.
There is also the reprise which is a sax outro.
I love most of Steely Dan. FM is special for some reason. It must be the smooth and funky groove.
Used to put SD on the turntable and fall asleep to them as a teen. I love me some Dan. BTW, still got that Vinyl.
The stereo sound stage on this track is awesome. One of my favorite by the Dan.

Bet it was 96ROCK wasn't it?
A collective of GREAT studio musicians that fortunately blow you away! and more!!! Make your mind sing, any song, you pick.
Steely Dan so much great music, remembering sitting in a black light room playing albums just buzzing along
I was one who was not a big fan of SteelyDan. So color me surprised when I started looking forward to their videos showing up on your channels. While i am not a "superfan" (lol) I have come to appreciate the masterfulness with which their songs are presented.

😆🤣
We’ get you over to the SD side of town yet, C! 👍
Man I love this song so much! It's got such a great groove. Definitely one of my favs by them.
I have really enjoyed re-experiencing Steely Dan with you! I had forgotten this one. What a great song!

so perfectly formulated and produced...never tire of this song
I think I’m a Steely Dan fanatic 😂🔥❤️

Strings then bongos, such great musicians. Learned to work the saxaphone....
Nice. Thank you! One of my favorites. ❤️
I love the song FM and Deacon Blues.
Bringing back jr and sr high school with Steely Dan !!! Love them and this song is awesome.
there is another mix of this song with a wicked sax solo at the end. I prefer that one.

Thanks, you are by far the best and smoothest song reviewer out here. Nice job
You nailed them,,awesome
Wow! I had forgotten about this favorite! Thank you. I'm at work grooving along with you. Trying not to sing out loud with my headphones on (I'm an accountant!) HAHAHAHA!!
Great reaction.
I've been waitin' for this one! Great reaction!
I don’t know of any other band ever that’s been tighter than Steely Dan
I truly enjoy the full album reactions
Excellent!!!
Nice and smooth.....
how has no one not ever heard this song? it's on fm quite abit.
I believe this was recorded during the Aja sessions.
Steely Dan are incredible. Not much better than them.👍🏻❤️☮️🎤🎹🎸🎼
There was AM radio broadcast that would make cracking noise sometimes when FM came out it was perfectly clear, that's why the song got it's name.
No static at all! That's the way my day has gone today! It's been a beautiful day and I've had a great birthday! Thanks for the smooth jams!

Smoooooove
I love what and how you do your music for us
Thanks😊
Where are your other channels? Anybody that appreciates SD as much as you is worth watching more of!
How dare you have an opinion! On your own show no less ! I love your channel, you let the vibe roll
I can’t think of one bad Steely Dan song.
What is your 3rd channel? Don't see it in the description. So glad I was able to see them twice before Walter passed.
Dating myself, but still sounds as good as when it came out.
FM 💎
The definition of Smoooooooooth! Yet it's "Nasty"
The movie was good too.
I think that "Here At The Western World" - originally released in 1978 as well, still needs a listen, right?
Did you say you have a third channel? I know about Bypoeleur and this one.I really enjoy your reactions so more is better yet!
Tru dat.
No static at all.....
FM is grade A prime Steely Dan
Is Here at the Western World next? Nobody has gotten to that one yet
Please check out Frank zapper muffin man !! Quality masterpiece
Have you reacted to Chain Lightning or Daddy Don't Live In New York City No More?
It's too bad you didn't hear the extended version with the sax outro as well as guitar. Perhaps you will check that out for yourself in the future. I know you would enjoy.

Several different endings to this song

Ahhhh `Dan...tasty as always
Love Steely Dan but you do other content too. Why the complaints
Tight and loose at the same time - how is that possible...?
I love SD but they aren't the only game in town. There is so much great music from the era as you well know. After all, variety is the spice of life.
