The boxer "Twister" was named Darren Shahlavi. He was a great martial artist and my friend back in the days of MySpace. He passed away due to a heart attack in his sleep. He was in 300 and I had a conversation with him about his agents getting in touch with Lucas back in the day about the roll of Quinlan Vos because @ the time some of the art work looked like him. He agreed 😊. This is way before any of the stuff Disney has now. My favorite movie that put him on the map was "Bloodmoon." It's a cult classic where he plays the ultimate villain. Staring Gary Daniels. The Star Wars thing was our last conversation in 2009-2010. We had other conversations and i miss those. He was a cool dude 😢

My favorite part of this movie is you really start to see Ip Man taking on the role of a Master. He not only teaches his students lessons in this film, but the other Masters as well. Also, the fight choreography seems like it's on another level of intensity compared to the first film even though they get less realistic. Definitely check out Ip Man 3 & 4.

As a woman, I too want to see more women fighter in movies like this :D Though fortunately, this one seems to be the exception rather than the norm with chinese movies. Hongkong cinema has had a wide variety of female fighters, unfortunately Hongkong's movie industry is in decline since China got hold of the city (since 1997). The number of movies in general and especially action / martial arts movies went down dramatically and with it female lead action movies.
If you want to see more woman fighters you have to go back to the 80s and 90s - the golden age. You'll find plenty there, and they kick ass so hard, modern Hollywood (still) doesn't get even close in comparison.

The tool Ip Man uses to practice Wong Chun is called "Mokjong" (Wooden dummy or Wooden man). It's used in many different styles of Kung Fu, mainly southern styles, such as Wing Chun, Choi Li Fut, Pak Mei and Hung Gar. It has many variations in it's designs depending on the martial art's aplications.

Historically it was customary for different fighting styles to test against each other. So this was not strange for the Boxer to test Kungfu styles. In Hong Kong they trained on the roofs and fights were held between different schools and styles. Ip mans first pupil in this movie was an undefeated rooftop legend in Hong Kong (think he has like 60plus wins to his name).

I just wanted to say the reason why Sammo Hung is referred to as the 'action director' and not stunt coordinator/choreographer, is because he's actually directing all the action scenes! In Hong Kong, action directors are in charge of choreography, framing the scene, and editing the fight sequences!

I'm glad you enjoyed this movie as well.
Allow me to bring up the historicity of this movie based on my own knowledge.
Once again, similar in structure to the first Ip Man movie, the first act of the movie is rooted heavily in historical fact, while the 2nd act reflected the sentiments of the period but none of the events were real.
Leung, the first student, is Wong Shun Leung. Wong Shun Leung is known in the Hong Kong martial arts community as one of the greatest street fighters and finest martial artist to have lived and fought in Hong Kong. As Ip Man's most senior student, he was in fact Bruce Lee's primary trainer. By the time Bruce Lee joined Ip Man's school, Ip Man was already very old and wasn't in the best of health. And so, Ip Man assigned Wong Shun Leung to train Bruce Lee. According to Bruce Lee's writings, Wong Shun Leung was the single greatest influence that shaped his philosophy when it comes to the Martial Arts.
Ip Man was subject to hazing by other Martial Arts clubs and societies and came out the other end respected by the other masters, this much is historical. Wing Chun and Hung Gar kung fu has had a long rivalry within Hong Kong's martial arts community, this much is also true, though it is likely anachronistic that Ip Man's student fought gang wars with students from Hung Gar schools, even though these gang wars did happen frequently in that time. Disputes between Martial Arts schools were frequently settled in duels behind closed doors, frequently on roof tops.
Once again, Donnie Yen's acting was coached by Ip Chun, the son of Ip Man, to replicate the historical Ip Man's mannerisms, from how he held his cigarette, to how he would sit at the roof top to smoke, to how sheepishly shy he is when it comes to collecting fees from his students. All that was as historical as it gets from the sons of Ip Man, from the memories of Ip Chun and Ip Ching themselves.
During post World War 2 British Hong Kong, the government was very corrupt. The Governor was chosen by the parliament in London and appointed by the Queen, and the Police Commissioners was chosen by the British Governors. The Executive and Legislative Council was completely appointed by the British Governor, and it was only with the looming handover to China in 1997, that the British give the Hong Kongers elections in 1985 and 1991. Before that, Hong Kongers had no say in their government, and had little to no trust in their government and their police. You'll find many Hong Kong TV shows depicting British leadership (especially British Police Captains and Commissioners) very poorly in the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s.
This led to plenty of secret societies being formed, and street justice being meted out within communities rather than subject themselves to the legal process and the mercy of an uncaring government that ruled the people rather than represent them. It was in these conditions that Martial Arts schools became a core part of the Hong Kong underworld. With limited access to (as well as a cultural disdain for) guns, street justice was enacted with fists and melee weapons. Hong Kong Triads were very powerful when the British were in charge, and this remained true until surprisingly recently.

  • @Anarkey
    @Anarkey Рік тому +19

The wooden dummy is called that; a wooden dummy for practicing the Wing Chun moves. Wing Chun is actually founded by a Buddhist nun and named after one of her top students who used the martial arts style to ward off a guy who wanted to marry her. Also, there's various distinct styles of Wing Chun but the concept still remain the same which is simplicity and using the least number of moves to achieve maximum result. There's other principles as well within the concept but that's the general gist. Fun fact, Robert Downey Jr is a known Wing Chun practitioner for a long time and he credits the martial art as one of the main reasons he was able to overcome his known addiction issues.

In terms of women doing martial arts: Ip Man is a master of Wing Chun Kung fu. "Wing Chun" is said to be a woman's name because legend says that it was created by a Shaolin nun. She taught a girl named Wing Chun from a village who was supposed to be wed to a warlord and challenged him to fight; if she won then they would not wed and her village would be safe. She won. That is the birth of the style.
Also, Donnie Yen's mother is a Grandmaster of Eagle Claw Kung fu.

  • @nerdygames5185
    @nerdygames5185 Рік тому +2

Roxy, Wing Chun is the name of the founder of the style - a woman :) Wing Chun was designed by women for women.
This is why the movements are so modest/poised yet elegant when compared to the other flashy and hardened Kung Fu schools. Straight to the point, below the belt low kicks, chain punching to compensate for brute strength, and not designed to start a fight but reacts very quickly. Everything about Wing Chun is feminine.

At a time when monks were being hunted and killed in China, 5 monks that were masters of different styles came together and trained a person in secret and her name was Wing Chun. She was able to keep the art safe because nobody expected a woman to know as they were forbidden to learn martial arts back then. 🤔
Well, I can see that it is very based on defending one’s self against a stronger opponent. The stance itself kinda shows. Both palms ✋are open and centered to protect her vitals and her strikes are short and fast with vertical fists. It’s fascinating. 🧐 Story makes sense to me.

who fought a 240 lbs Russian (not British) boxer in
Hong Kong. Wong Shun Leung won that fight by KO in
    three punches.

8:46 The reason Ipman blames himself is because his friend Quan helped him and his family escape from the Japanese, so in the Japanese eyes he's a fugitive. Most likely Quan had to go back to Fo Shan for his son and thats when he was shot in the beginning of the movie.

the fact that Sammo Hung used to act as goofy characters in the old days is interesting, as he got older he became an actor that gets strong and scary character to act, the complete 180 is mind boggling

The movie was set in Hong Kong during WWII. Hong Kong was a British colony at that time, so the Caucasian cops in the movie are British. Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 and China allowed autonomous rule for 50 years.

All IP Man are very good nd Donnie Yen is an icon, but interesting, this particular one is clear to me it was very strongly inspired from Rock 4.
-2 great boxers and champions, once rivals, became friends.
    -2 rival masters became friends.
-one of the champion get killed in the ring by a super fighter villain
-one of the masters get killed in the ring by a boxing champion villain
-general hostile attitude between US and Russia
-general hostile attitude between China/HK and westerns
-the other champion, respectively the other master go in the ring with the villain motivated by the death of their friend
-both go trugh a hell of a fight and in the end they win, winning also the crowd.
-the unifying speech, hurrah from the whole public

As a kid growing up in the 70s - Bruce Lee/Chuck Norris era also Muhamad Ali and that was the never ending question who would win "kick boxing" or a straight boxer. Bruce Lee took alot of elements from all types of "fighting styles" - he was MMA before there was an "offical" MMA. I'd love to see you guys reaction to the rest of the IP Man series and yes I believe many events were serialized but kept with the tone of the era IP Man lived in.
Awesome reaction guys lets keep it going. :)

By the way, I’ve heard the reason why they teach you to yell when you strike in martial arts is because it forces you to breathe. Sometimes people can get carried away and forget to breathe properly and they’ll get winded quickly if they do that, so by learning to yell or make noise when you strike it forces you to breathe continuously. I’m no martial artist but I’ve heard that many times from different people and it makes sense.
