What have we done to the land?!😵💫Episode 4
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- We make a start clearing back the land to allow for drainage, a static being put down and gravel/stones around the house.
I am really struggling to deal with this right now as it looks awful, but apparently, it's all part of the process, and it will 'green up' again soon!
NB, no trees or hedges were destroyed in the making of this movie!

I'm so glad you are video-ing this visit with your neighbor! There'll come a day when you'll have want of the history he is sharing with you now...
This is a stressful endeavor. It reminds me of how brides get so stressed they don’t enjoy the process. It’s like being pregnant and not enjoying the process. To help look at things as a blessing and enjoying the process I always try to remind myself, some people can’t find a mate to marry, some people can’t have children and some folks (like me) would love this mess to bring this home back to a traditional land and home in Ireland!! I pray you’ll find the peace of having a place in the Ireland country side even when it’s overwhelming half the joy is in the journey and you have beautiful plans to keep it beautiful and traditional! God bless you on your journey.. you’re so blessed to be on this exceptional journey in Ireland ❤️
I love the conversation with Gabriel. It's important to talk to neighbours.
He is such a gent. I'd love to film him talking about his life. He was so fit and active until a bull trampled him a few years ago. He us lucky to be alive. So many great stories he has everytime I see him. I❤️
Good man Gabriel, I know Gabriel well.
Welcome. I love the way Gabriel said there's only 5 of us and now there's 9. That's lovely.
He's such a sweet guy. 💖
How can one accent sound so arrogant and another sound so charming? I could listen to that old gentleman all day!
I could, too. I call around regularly to chat with him. I love hearing about the history of the house. He and I are great friends now.
Kristine Bailey, it's funny also how words typed with a keyboard can also sound charming & kind and others mean and spiteful. Shame we live in a world like that isn't it?
Those fields will be right back again next spring, no worries. The grass will come right back. You're not destroying the ecosystem at all. You're only stirring it up, which makes some of the wildlife quite happy. You have to maintain the health of the buildings in order to be there.
Hi and thank you so much for such a lovely reassuring message. You can tell I was worried we were like bulls in a China shop but I'm so glad we did it as we have access now all around the house/barns plus I got a pond! I hope we can turn it into a beautiful garden & orchard in the near future ✨️💕
Don’t worry it will be just fine
Don't forget the golden rule of construction and renovation. It always looks horrible before it comes together and blossoms into something wonderful.
Thank you. I need to keep remembering this! 😁
Awe, your neighbor is lovely! 🥰❤️ The duck and chicken pond sounds so awesome, and yeah, it’s got to get graded in order to make it all flat and new and YOURS! I am excited to see your journey through this! 🥰💚
Aww thank you. We are lucky to have Gabriel nearby. He is a wealth of knowledge on the history of the place. The green is coming back thick and fast now! 🌱
Keep the trough. Use it for rain water harvesting for flushing your loos, the washing machine and watering your future veg.😊❤
That's the plan!
You should all be so proud of what you're doing! I love everything about Ireland, so glad you're sharing this.
Thank you so much! Lovely of you to say so ❤️
Love what you're doing, keep up the good work but don't lose the wildness of it, that's what makes it special 😎
Thanks, I want that wildness but would like it a bit better drained! 🤣
Sam & Rebeca you are the finest people in the world, I wish there were more people like you. I love your dedication and love of animals. You are the hardest working people. I am glad you love Ireland, I was born in Ireland and live in Denver, Colorado. I look forward to your next episode!
Big stuff happening at the moment, you will see in the next video
I’m looking forward to following your journey.🥰
Thank you! 🍀
Love The Darling Buds of May, what a wonderful vision to work towards.
Finally! Someone who gets it! The original one with David Jason! I always wanted their life!
@@theirishhomestead looking forward to the episode where the 2 of you have a roast turkey supper in the bathtub!
@jaylgl ha ha I'm looking forward to that episode too! 🤣

Hi guys, just found you here, you make a great couple and family❤️ I love Ireland, my mum and dad both Irish, sadly passed on now…. Looking forward to your progress, it’s going to be a wonderful home to come, wish you every happiness for the future 🌹xx
Thank you so much, that is lovely of you. ❤️
This is so cool. Enjoy your renovations, look forward to following your progress. And welcome to your Irish home❤
Thanks so much for the words of support! 😊
You have a great vision for this place - keep up the good work! Can tell you really appreciate everything around you xx
Thank you, we are trying to keep its traditional style alive as much as possible. It's just such a beautiful place and so special to me already 💕
Its looking so much better just with the weeds and grass cut.
Hi 👋🏻 Bec’s and lovely family 😊 I’m still randomly catching up lol 😂 How sweet was Gabriel. Neighbour for life and I’m sure he’ll live some of your home made food Bec’s 🤩 Sam is right it has too be done but I can see your point Bec’s as nature takes ages to recover but when it does it’ll be beautiful like you 😍 xxxxx
Ahh yes I hated seeing that! Its looking a lot better already & I know it's more practical for us now whilst renovating the place but I loved the original wildness of the place.
You have worked very hard and will be worth all your energy once you get it to how you want. I am looking forward to accompanying you on your adventure😀
Thanks Yvonne, it's definitely been hard physically and will only continue but that just makes it more satisfying at the end....so I'm told! 🤣
Just Discovered your Channel. Do not worry about all the digging, this will revitalize the soil, and with proper irrigation all shall be green and lovely again... the last thing you need is standing water. Looking forward to your continuing adventures, so happy for you.
Thank you. I was so heartbroken seeing that at the time but it's amazing how quickly everything is coming back already. 🌱🌱
A metal detector would be good to see what you can find especially for the children
I actually have one! Keep meaning to get it out! Will have a go this week. 👍
Lots of hard work already, going to be awesome to watch it all come together. Beautiful landscape and setting, love it. 👍❤
Thank you, it is so beautiful here. We feel really lucky & excited for the future. Thanks for following us & supporting. 🍀
I’m so excited to see what you guys do with your beautiful property!
Thanks so much. ♥️
Lovely neighbour! Good bless him!
Indeed, lovely man 😊
Should keep some of the amazing cow poo for your garden growing just put in bags or up the back to use later in spring for the garden...❤❤❤
That's the plan. I've already approached our neighbour and he said I can take what we need for free! 🙌👍
you've rushes. you should address the drainage now, before plantings. you're waterlogged.and see if someone locally has a riddle.
it'll save all the stone (and your backs). and welcome to Ireland 🇮🇪😉😎
Yes we have been advised to to this. Will have to wait until we are able to afford the digger guy again. Also better when the land is a bit drier we have been told.
Congratulations on your new home, you should be so proud of what you are building and be able to hand over to your children and then the grandchildren. I have project managed a large number of homes in Scotland and Ireland so know where you are probably in terms of panic as to what you are doing. When I say to clients about field drains and getting the core draining done and why it is important, I tell them think of all that stones and lime acts as a massive sponge and no matter what pointing you do the walls will not dry whilst there is 100's of gallons of water in the soil around the property. One consideration for the concrete water tank would be to utilise as a foundation for a rain harvesting tank to provide your grey water or non potable water - working with lime is a massive consumer of water and thankfully Ireland typically you will be able to collect 1000's of litres from the roofs year on year. Enjoy the journey.
Thank you for your really lovely & helpful comment. Yes, we will re-use the water tank for its original purpose. We plan on re-sealing it and creating a log store between the barn and water tank, which will then have a replacement corrugated roof from the good bits we saved. We hope to re-use what we can to keep costs down. Becky.
More than happy to assist in any capacity to aid your amazing journey ahead. @@theirishhomestead
Wow great progress 👏. Love the old bits and bobs . Reminds me of my grand parents old farm. They had a no electricity and no motorised machinery . All horse powered. But of course they modernised over the years . But kept a lot of the old stuff. That cattle crush will be a tough one to get removed looks like it is well stuck in. Dont worry about the land . Yes it is a reset. But nature will make it beautiful for you. Good luck with the duck pond. Love ducks ❤
Jason, the cattle crushes are out!! The digger guy did us a service and got them out! I'm still finding bits and bobs for out curiosity cabinet! Duck pond is dug! So excited to show everyone next Sunday. Thanks so much for the support. We hope to stay off grid if we can just like your grandparents but with some help from solar & wind! 🤣
in speaking you deserve the world champion
Aww really enjoyed your sharing round the farm it's gona look amazing when it's done it's lovely to watch you all doing your own wee bit I feel as though I'm with yous when I watch it isn't tech wonderful can wait till next week for your latest update so bye for now love and hugs to you all xxxx
Thanks, Jean, will be so good to see you xx
Hi Ye, new subscriber all the way from South Africa. If you had sunny weather as we do the cement dam could have been a nice swimming pool, but your weather isn't sunny enough 😢 Glad I found your videos. I will be binge watching until I have caught up with your progress. Can't wait to see what happens 😁
Ahh yes definitely not good for a swimming pool but maybe a cold water therapy tank? 🤣
I love all the bits you found and kept, especially the chick incubator ❤ I have loads that I’ve found and kept too! Like you, I drive my husband nuts with having to inspect everything before it’s gets thrown away! Soo chuffed to see your fireplace as I think that’s what ours will look like in our kitchen once we remove the concrete! Looking forward to your next video. 😊
Glad it's not just me fending things off from being chucked! Love the fireplace. Likewise looking forward to yours! 😁
Plant trees that love water. Willows are planted along river beds to prevent flooding, so they might be good... Ps your doing great work and those views are to die for, stunning.
I'd love willow trees, will they do ok in clay soil though that is the question. They would look fab near the pond area. Thanks so much for the support & kind message. 💗
@@theirishhomestead Willows do well in clay, sandy or loamy soil as long as it's wet enough. I don't think you'll have any problems growing willows. As a side note, willow branches can be put in with anything you are trying to root in a cup of water and whatever you are trying to grow will grow roots. Also I take branches off willow trees and just stick them in the soil with no prep or digging and they become trees. lol Willow is lovely and incredibly easy.
Absolutely amazing best decision ever youve both made buying that place its gonna be magical and bexs you.ll still have sooo much green to plant still one very very happier gardner to be❤😂😂
It really was our best decision ever! 🥰
I wouldn't worry too much about stripping everything back. Everything will be back come Spring. The one thing you can depend on is that, in Ireland, everything grows back very quickly! Six months from now you won't see the bare earth.
Thanks for the reassurance. I'm already seeing that, and it is surprising how quickly it grows here!
Throw some hay over the areas that are all dirt so that you aren’t left with all mud. You can even throw it over the seed you lay so that the birds don’t eat the seed. At least you will be able to see all of the promises of what is to come instead of all of the bare dirt/ mud. All new homes start out like that and turn into a thing of beauty. I moved into a home that was less that 800 sq ft. And the property was more than 3000 sq ft. . I had nothing but grass and have been turning it into an English garden over 3 years. It is coming along with each year. It just takes time.
Thanks Kate, good to hear how quickly things will grow back. Hay is a good idea 💡it definitely feels bigger now! 🙂
Please level the ground around the house to the fence line. Yes it is a necessary evil. But in the long run it will be better! And when out walking you will not find the unexpected whole in the ground and break an ankle. You can line paths with the pulled up stones from the area, and put gravel down between them that you can lead down to your pond. When life gives you lemons make a beautiful lemon pie.
I would have liked to see the clearing of the land in time lapse. It must be interesting to see how this is done and how the drainage is created.
We just used a digger to clear it and make drainage channels. There is still lots to do with drainage yet.
please please don’t render that stonework point it with hydraulic lime 3 to 1 mix if the stone is rubbish then line wash it
Hi there and welcome to the back garden of Europe, will you be laying Tram before you dress around the house in stone have you thought about jobs when you have the digger
I would scrape and put tram and stone and some pipe for electric pipe to the Barn one that's made with railway steels that can be a very useful shed can be repaired for little money
The tank can be used for watering purposes of the plants and power washing vehicles etc or ducks 😂 digger dig you two holes for a close line and gate post and gates for security lovely homestead all the best with the Grant for restoration
Yes we will be putting tram down but for now we can't do anything to the house as we are applying for the grant. Thanks for your suggestions, really helpful. 🙂
Don't worry about clearing up, you'll be fighting the weeds again before you know it. Believe me, it comes back with a vengeance.👍
Thanks 😊 I feel so bad right now for clearing it back, but hopefully, we can bring it back with less of those blooming rushes! 😅
Tackle the drainage first guys or you'll be plagued with a damp wet site. French drains on all sides...use all those stones you dug up!
Hi, unfortunately, although some drainage channels were put in, we didn't have the funds to do it properly. We are lucky, though, that bring on a hill the house is very dry inside, and the work we did manage to do has been a god send!
Hi, I think you've done well...spend the next few weeks improving your static and battoning down for the winter. Save and start in ernest early in the sprigtime. Good luck from a fellow englishman in the North.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, thats very kind of you. ♥️
See it as land rejuvenation. Then it wouldn't feel so bad. Nature will reclaim it again and you can plant loads of tree's.. fruit tree's ❤😊
That's the plan. I'm sure this summer it will look lovely again. With less brambles & rushes hopefully!
Are you or will you be using well water. Also please use gloves for all of you. I worked as a flower waterer-laborer and they are so important!!! Cause I care about you. that big tractor tire I saw in one of your vlogs would make a good planter. Old bathtubs are great too. That kettle would make a great hanging basket maybe with some strawberries in it.
Thanks Heather, we do have gloves for us all but admit we sometimes forget to put them on. Will make more effort to remember.
Good suggestions for the tire & kettle. Thank you. 😊
It’s lovely to dream but as an Irish farmer be really wary of goats. Firstly they’re escape artists. Secondly they’ll eat hedges, flowers or anything else they fancy. In short they’re the best way ever, to fall out with your neighbours.
Yes, I have heard lots of these types of stories. Shame as they are such fun animals. Maybe just a couple of Donkeys! 🤔
Where are you in Ireland where from Cheadle Hulme and have bone the same thing in Leitrim keep it it will be worth all the hard work garry
Hi! Cheadle Hulme was 5 mins from our old house! We are near Mohill!
I wouldn’t put a pond in especially on level ground. Irish law dictates that water can follow water and would mean all your neighbours could legally trench into it and with Ireland having around 250 days of torrential rain could leave you with a real headache, best wishes
Thanks for the advice. I'll look into it.
Would love to see the projects in action rather then just chatting about what you’ve done. Just a new viewer’s opinion.
We are trying to remember to pick up the camera and film us doing stuff rather than discuss it after the fact. Thanks for the advice.
That's rubbish irish law!! 😅😅
Yup, that's what I was thinking when I saw there was an overflow into the neighbours field.
Where in Ireland are you?
Saw on one of your videos you going from cairnryan (not far from us) to Larne…
We are in Co Leitrim just near Mohill
Well its only been a week and it sure does look like you have done so much. Can't wait until next week.
Sam really worked his butt off, but honestly, having the kids helping made things easier!
It’ll green over really quickly. It’ll amaze you!
I blooming hope so! It looks shocking right now! 😮💨
@@theirishhomestead it will. It never fails to surprise me. We have a few ducks and every now and then I leave them on one patch too long and it’s absolutely knackered. And it always recovers. Also, we had our land round the house cleared nearly 5 years ago and I felt very similar, but it recovered so quickly.
This is great to hear, thank you! Are ducks very destructive?
yes, they can make it a mud bath fairly quickly. If you can rotate where they are (we use electric netting on the field) or have only a few and a fairly large area, that may be ok. They dig their beaks into the ground.@@theirishhomestead
@cathyjp100 ok thanks, will bear that in mind. Was thinking of Indian runners as less noisy, good layers & good foragers.
Sam, ask your digger driver if he has a Riddle bucket if you want to keep your stone it'll save a lot of hard work.!!
He's done for now, but I will ask him for that if we need him back for anything. Thanks.
Good to see it coming on.
Thanks so much Kym.☺️
I know you will.loads of opinions anout your renovation but for your pointing and rendering please research lime pointing. These old building were usually built without foundations. Lime will allow the building to breath.
Yes, Sam's been on a Roundtower Lime course, and it's how we plan on renovating the house with lime mortar/render. 👍
Might be better to buy a landcruiser and a large box trailer and that would be better than a van with 3 seats and you can unhich the trailer as you want 👍
Yes we were looking at landcruisers, but Sam wants a van as we plan to convert it for future travel plans after we have renovated the house. Still undecided.
Be careful about leaving trees close to your proposed house. They might look nice but remember they have just grown there by neglect. Their leaves will block your gutters and cover your paths for years to come.
Thanks for the info. Hopefully, they are far enough away not to cause too many problems! We will keep an eye on it.
Turn the water tank into a pool/jacuzzi
Love this idea! 😀
How much do you know about English Ivy's effect on trees?
We are removing it on the trees we are keeping. I spent last Oct cutting it at the base. The ones that are dead/ dying will be removed in the winter.
One assumes that the manure will be put to good use on your vegetable patches
Hi yes we have kept the manure as it will be used for growing when we are ready. Next thing is getting the house done. 🏡
Such an exiting project.
Have you thought about removing the ivy from the trees to save them?
Hi, yes, we are doing this as much as we can. Access to them has been tricky with lots of nettles & brambles.

Really! I think the sound is terrible, but that's good to hear! We use a GoPro Hero 9
You should entomb the old shoes in the new walls, and fill some of the old bottles with urine and old nails and bury them around the entrances. It needs a touch of witchyness. X
That's an interesting idea! Urine & nails, do you mean toe nails or wood nails? What does that do? 🤔

Rome wasn't built in a day. Your priorities are a home, power, sanitation and access. I dont think you have any shortage of water. All the other things will come in good time. I am impressed with what has happened so far.
You're right. Hopefully, all those things will fall into place this week. Then hopefully we can make a start on the house.

I would put plants and flowers in that feed trough. Rubber and metal maker better troughs. Much easier to flip over and wash out than that concrete one. I love to have that trough at my house here in America. Can’t find them. Eventually place the trough by your kitchen door for herbs if you want for just flowers. I’d love to have that problem.
