  • After 10 months of travelling Europe in a motorhome with our kids, we have decided to buy a base in Ireland. We fell in love with this ruined farm, and the plan is to renovate it & create our Irish off grid Homestead.
    Please follow along on our journey.

    What you found looks like an old horse cart harness. The reins would go through the rings maybe. the old guy next door would know. what a lovely man.

    Finding ‘the man’ for the job, that is what the Irish pub was invented for! Yes drink is taken but the business networking that happens is fantastic.

    • @theirishhomestead
      @theirishhomestead  4 місяці тому +1

      Sam doesn't drink. 8 years sober! Networking has to find a different path for us and fortunately, it has as Sam has done some work locally as a joiner, so he met other trades! 😁👍

      @theirishhomestead does he play golf? That is another good place.
      I fecked my back up completely, so couldn't swing a club, so I had to use the pub.
      We came to Ireland for 3 months in September 1999, still here!

    Cement degrades the stone over time and forms damp in pockets. Use block and cement or stone and lime. What a beautiful view.

      Sam plans on doing a lime rendering course as lime will be the route we take. Thank you for the advice.

    The leather object is a castle from a set of working horse harness. The reins go through the metal rings and along the back of the horse.

    Looks like neck saddle where the reins would’ve been fed through.
    Loving your journey. We did the same 7 years ago. Bought a derelict ruined barn in north west Scotland. I felt your pain Becca when the digger dragged the soil away. Ours had to be done too as it was also a bull field. We found lots of crockery, metal bits and horseshoes. Kept everything we found. Regret not trawling through everything though but we didn’t have the time sadly.
    We’re organised now and mainly been growing a garden from scratch.
    We also got our digger guy to scrape out our duck pond at the same time too. It’s been like watching ourselves all over again. No regrets. ♥️

    A second power adapter sold by Bluetti will quicken your charge dramatically. There are videos on here how to do it. I’m sure you probably know and looks like you have plenty of openings but watch out for carbon monoxide if you are running the generator under a roof. Good luck.

    Loving this Irish adventure. I live in the uk and would love to move over to Ireland and get a house with land. Would you be able to do a video on the legal stuff moving to Ireland? Can any British resident move there or do you need a family in Ireland? Also a bit about buying the property and land and your experience with it would be great. Wish you all the best, Neil

    • @theirishhomestead
      @theirishhomestead  10 місяців тому +9

      Hi Neil. The UK ,& Ireland have a special agreement so you can buy property here just as an Irish person can buy in the UK. To obtain residency here it takes 5 years unless you have family. Sam has Irish citizenship so it's only 3 years then for me as his wife. Buying land/property is straightforward, just put down an offer & see. Nothing here is set in stone though until contracts are exchanged. Gazumping happens often. Then just instruct a solicitor. Hope this helps but I'm no expert. Becky.

    • @helenstewart2085
      @helenstewart2085 9 місяців тому

      Hard fill is stones and rocks but not crushed as fine as yours, house and garden are on the side of a rise, only place for the vegetables was beside a old loading bank that had hard fill applied around it, but big stones had been used, similar to what you have been digging out of the barn.
      When we did one renovation removed the old wash house it had 3 different layers of cement under it. They must of just kept on adding cement to build the floor level up every 20 to 30 years here in New Zealand.

    Through the magick (sic) of UA-cam your video popped up today. I watch several US based homesteading channels (ok, I'm a Yank living in Germany; they give a vicarious taste of home.) I'm interested in seeing how you make a homestead out of your land. So far I see many common elements. Many US homesteaders start out in camper vans, then mobile homes which I think you call a Static. Then either renovate an existing structure or build. I recognize your ambition and will be keen to follow.....and I did it. I subscribed.
