Did Ozai Have Lu Ten MURDERED?!⎮An Avatar: The Last Airbender Theory

- So, is Lu Ten's death sus to anybody else? Like... dude was a Prince... probably had heaps of bodyguards and world class training from his dad. And the moment he died, Ozai was able to strike to secure his path to the throne. And so, today that is what I want to puzzle out. Did Ozai have his nephew whacked?
Considering this is the same guy who burned and banished his son it most likely he had his nephew killed
While I can't be certain if Ozai had a twisted love for Zuko or just didn't want anything related to him to be an embarassment, I appreciate the fact that Zuko was banished (which could be revoked) rather than killed--granted, in many cultures, that's worse than death.
@@OpticalSorcerer there were points when Ozai actualy tried to kill Zuko tho
I can’t believe I never thought of this! It would 100% fit in with his character. Though I guess since we never saw the battle itself, we can only speculate, but I wouldn’t put it past this man.
You know the episode where zoku try to join the main cast but aang, katara and soka wasn't having it and Toph was the only to defend him, where she straight up said that giving who zoku family is, it's amazing he is not more messed up then he actually was, and the trio was not having that excuse!
I understand the trio point of view, but when you lay out the things that zoku family have done toward each other alone. Honesty Toph has an excellent point, honestly the way I see it, it's a fricking miracle that zoku didn't become as damaged as azula!
For a moment I was like, "who the hell is Zoku?"
Ironically getting banished and thus spending years away from Ozai and the court was the best thing that happened to Zuko.
Who is Zoku, do you mean Zuko?😂
It’s Zuko

I respect the fact that Azulan was angry at Ozai for being opportunistic when Iroh was going through his grief. I don't think Ozai was involved with his nephew's death since it's too convenient writing ("everyone's problems lie with this one person") but I'm sure the idea crossed his mind. I feel like he's an underrated villain because he doesn't appear as much and Azula overshadows him.
I don’t think Ozai’s that great a villain. He does his job well enough but that’s it.
@@matityaloran9157 I think it's largely because he's a presence. He delegated his work, giving Azula more screentime and allowing her to be more complex. Unlike her, he doesn't crave love or attention; he's just selfish and power-hungry. I imagine being a villain without a tragic backstory or something/someone he cares about makes some people consider him "boring."
@@OpticalSorcerer That’s actually not my take. I think the best praise of Ozai is that (aside from firebending) he’s an extremely realistic character since there were (and are) quite a lot of dictators as evil as he was. But I also think he’s weakened by the fact that he doesn’t have the same personal connection to the protagonist that the main villain should have. He has that connection to Zuko, yes, but not to Aang so Aang defeating Ozai doesn’t have the same impact as Katara defeating her mother’s killer of Zuko defeating Azula. And I think Zhao, who was also an utter monster, worked better as an antagonist for Aang because of the extent to which he actually focused on his efforts to take down the Avatar that Ozai hadn’t. Though I admit that Ozai could have been a good villain if he were a more active antagonist. Ozai’s not a bad villain inasmuch as he does the job of being a villain and he does it well enough but he falls far short of most of the other villains of the show
@@matityaloran9157 Fair assessment. Like I said, he's more of a presence; his face isn't even seen until season 3. The writers want him to seem ethereal, an unreal threat while Azula is more human. I suspect his lack of a connection to Aang is also done to make him seem less sympathetic and human.
@@matityaloran9157 Ozai is like Palpatine and Sauron. Villains that barely make any threats to the protagonists. Azula is like Darth Vader and Saruman.
Even though this wouldn't be all that surprising for ozai to do this, I personally don't want lu ten's death to be some conspiracy cause him getting killed by some random earth kingdom soldiers and being another casualty of war is more impactful in my opinion.
Considering the age difference between Iroh and Ozai, I feel like Ozai was an unexpected birth that his father just went with but never gave a second thought about.
If this theory is true, think of the complete irony of Ozai staging Lu Ten's murder for the crown, causing Iroh to lose the will to fight & go through a chain of events that leads to him & a few others like Zuko to become major players in a bigger chain of events that ultimately leads to his downfall, all while Iroh has no idea really happened to his son's death
Makes perfect sense that Ozai would do this
Knowing Ozai, I wouldn't put it pass him just to spite his brother
Absolutly he is how Ursla (Zukos mom) said that his heart is so small that he dosen't like even himself. You can't get more right that he is willing to kill irohs Son.Videos like this Make in collaboration with film theory.
Obviously Lu Ten was destined to die. If he didn't Aang would have faced Firelord Iroh and that would have been more messy b/c Iroh would know he could not beat the Avatar. Even one who hasn't been trained properly. Fighting Ozai on the other hand led to a neat and clean victory.
Although a FireLord Iroh would have forced Aang to think a bit more in order for peace to return Aang needed to make a public example of the person behind the war. Stripping Ozai of his bending made him made Ozai a living example of what happens to those who defy the Avatar's will. But death could have worked as well. This way anyone who uses their bending for evil will live in even greater fear than if Ozai had just died.
If this would have been actual history, I'm sure there would be theories among scholars about Ozai's nephew assasination. Even if the writers didn't have this ideea in mind, it sure as hell sounds plausible!
Just because the Fire Nation managed to breach the outer wall doesn't mean they could maintain a foothold inside. Sooner or later, Ba Sing Se's soldiers would have launched a counter attack that might have pushed the Fire Nation out. I think after 600 days, Iroh and his generals realised they couldn't stay in the outer walls for long. And after so many soldiers had died (including his own son) he decided to lift the seige.
Ozai who was ready to take his son off the family setting up an assassination on his own nephew. So on character but what if it was meant for iroh. Ozai older brother who claimed the title of Dragon. A younger Ozai would have wanted none of that smoke. But the assassination attempt fails because Lu Ten saves his father but doesn't make it thru the encounter
This theory actually makes a lot of sense. I mean if Ozai would try to off his own son and brother, then what's stopping him from whacking his nephew to get to the throne. It probably wouldn't be to difficult for him to pull off and he has the motive.
I honestly don't like this theory. It's so much more nuanced for Iroh to lose his son because of his own obsession with conquering Ba Sing Se.
W take.
i read a fanfic with that exact thought in mind it pops back up in my head from time time
We need a trilogy of novels about young Iroh.
We the Jury find the defendant (Ozai) GUILTY of all charges
Here's a follow-up theory to this what if iroh becoming the fire lord and lu ten not died, iroh would have ended the war
Yeah, cause the fire nation would most likely win the war. And things wouldn't 100% be all sunshine and rainbows cause even though iroh is more benevolent than his brother and father this version of iroh hasn't gone through the death of his son, being considered a disgrace to his people, and spent an entire journey with zuko to ba sing se running a tea shop. Iroh would still be a threat, and aang would probably have a harder time dealing with 5 of the royal family, possibly 6 if azulon hasn't kicked the bucket yet
The thing I love about ATLOA is that represented different evil/anti heroic benders from different nations and proving that Fire Nation can't be the only bad guys.
I think there may have been a third party involved in this plot. One who wanted to prolong the war and increase the carnage. The war certainly took a more brutal turn after Ozai took the throne.
I've had this suspicion in my head head for a few years
We do know that ozai is ruthless enough to do this
We don't know a lot about lu ten but judging from iroh he was probably a decent guy
And nobody has anything bad to say about him other than ozai and azula
Maybe lu ten was becoming critical of the war
Maybe he wanted to end it so ozai decides he has to be "taken care of"
Or it could just be plain old ruthless ambition
Missed opportunity to give it a heart radiant, still looks cool
I mean.. Zuko somehow found sparky sparky boom man to kill Aang and I always wondered how the hell did Zuko find someone like that. I will not be suprised that Ozai had the means to find an assassin and they killed him during the battle or at the very least sabotage Iroh's son to be killed in battle. We don't know the battle and there is alot of ways that someone could whack up someone and cover it up during a time of war. But yeah... definitely in his character to do such a thing but I think not knowing is well for the better in the span of things.
I would think a possible assassin would be Combustion Man from season 3.
Ozai might have had some kind of poison snuck into something Lu Ten had maybe his Tea so Ozai might have had a Fire Bender sneak into Lu Tens Tent and leave some kind of Poison Tea for him if he was a Tea lover like his Father Iroh so that he would have died in Battle.
Intresting theory to explore but I like the canon explanation. Not everyhing has to be a conspiracy though it is something Ozai would do.
Makes so much sense so yes Ozai killed his nephew
I never really considered this before but just the mere suggestion and yeah the idea tracks rather well.
While I think it is a possibility I think it is better story telling if he dies because of a war that irho is partly responsible for
I fully believe he had Lu Ten assassinated. Especially with this whole plan of taking Iroh place as next in line for the throne.
But that’s just a theory a conspiracy theory and cut
Wouldn't shock me he probably killed his own father too
he, he did, in a way. he forced zuko and azula's mother to do it or else he'd kill zuko
Of course he could have but if it’s not in the show it’s not in the show. They make it quite clear he saw an opportunity to steal power and took it
If Ozai had Lu-Ten assassinated then by whom did Ozai have him killed? Combustion Man? Jun? And which of those would be likely to be at Ba Sing Se during the siege? I think it much more likely that the Dai Li had Lu-Ten killed to provoke Iroh into behaving irrationally that they could more easily defeat him.
Perhaps Long Feng worked with Fire Nation longer than expected
@@kubat4925 Though if that were the case then Azula should have been familiar with him before the Earth King stupidly told her about him
@@matityaloran9157 Not really if Ozai never told her about Long Feng. I mean, Azula raided Ba Sing Se out of her own choice and with how manipulative both Ozai and Long Feng are, I think neither of them would spill the beans. Not like they would need to.
@@kubat4925 Maybe. Though of the two of them, Long Feng is much more cloak and dagger while Ozai is more direct and violent
@@matityaloran9157 Doesn't matter. No one will know
Hm, how very interesting, honestly this seems very likely, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was confirmed.
After the last leak we got about the Netflix live action I’d be surprised if this doesn’t become cannon there
Yeah it makes sense, but the problem is the geography. Ozia would basically have to make sure there was someone in the army iroh was leading that would murder a member of the royal family, so he would either have to know someone already there or sneak someone in, but what are the odds anyone would risk execution for assassinating a prince?
Hate to say it, but he probably just got killed in battle.
Would you be surprised
I thought of the same thing
I don't think there's much backing up to the story, just doesn't make much sense, and cheapens Irohs story.
I think Ozai was supposed to be seen as a shameless opportunist, not as a scheming mastermind he would need to be for this to work.
For this to work he would need to know that
1-Iroh losing his son would cause him to give up
2-asking to be next Firelord would make Azulon so furious his son Zuko would be killed
3-his wife Ursa would propose poisoning Azulon to protect Zuko.
1- Given that Iroh supposedly killed the last dragon, and gloated about burning the City to the ground, I think the more likely read on Lu Tens death would be that Iroh would either be indifferent (how Ozai would feel about his own sons death), or that he would be so furious he would attack the city with no intent of keeping casualties low. (best case Ozai: Iroh dies in battle)
2- That's harsh, but expected. I don't think Ozai cared though.
3- maybe that makes sense? But if he were to be shown as scheming, it would have made sense if he "burdened" his wife with that task to save their son from his mistake.
The theory makes sense in the context of Ozai needing to be more interesting, and having more agency in his own rise in power though
The 2nd one.
🤯
here’s an ida! who was the assassin?… 🤔Maybe… Sparky Sparky BOOM Man???
Ozai wouldn’t do that….I think?
Make sense
Good points
valid
Lu ten was obviously a firebrnder right ?

What if Sozin forced marriage between Iroh and Ursa?
zuko being iroh's son
Interesting theory but not a fun one, really.
I mean you could argue that he was more than willing to have his father, wife and son killed to achieve his goals and so he would order the assassination of his nephew without hesitation, it doesn't have to be the best explanation.
Sometimes, not knowing what caused a tragedy in a story is better than knowing what did.
You like it, more power to you, it does have good logic but it just sounds boring to me for some reason.
