I currently own a few sectors just for the fun of it, the bragging rights, the RP and the cool factor. In-game, there are actually too few mechanics that make it worthwhile to take the responsibility of owning a sector. Taxes, tariffs and the like would help. Allowing other factions to pay you for the privilege of installing a production station, that I can sell wares to, in one of my sectors could also work to some degree. For now, ownership served really only three purposes. First, it forces me to protect the sector from the Xenon. Thankfully, it eventually serves to deny any additional stations for the Xenon, without requiring a military presence, as after a little while of me destroying their stations, in sectors I own, and without them getting a single ship through, the Xenon eventually abandon their attempts. It's a form of territorial control in this strategy game. A second reason is that friendly NPC factions don't even try to build stations in your sectors, allowing you to corner a little market for yourself, even without having to ban wares - although that works too. Finally, with enough police presence, I completely squashed piracy in my sectors. Policing is required to discover pirates lying about their affiliation. Keeping Minotaurs under control is essential to keep your M-sized traders alive. If other factions don't have enough police to discover pirates in time, those pirates do real damage. That is not a concern for my own sectors as I can make sure there are enough police scanning away.
It would be nice if you could charge a toll for travel in your sector. But to your second point…. Slicers…. Travel to the other factions stations you wanna take out and disable their trading power. Since your stations are in close proximity pick up their slack!
Thanks! Any longer and the algorithm gods would have came after me. Had to keep is short and sweet. Cause what’s yours you’ll never give up, never let down….
For me its 3 reason. #1 I can pirate and board ships without losing rep. Ships in my sector can not call for help and reduce my rep. If they would contact sector police, they would complain about me to myself. But I still lose rep if I destroy ship modules. So its not a total free pass. But makes it a lot easier. #2 I can build as many stations as I want without needing to pay for the plot. Paying a plot can get really expensive if you need a really Big one. #3 Also I like it that other factions dont build in my sector. I have two sectors with only my stations in it. I really dont like it if another station plops up directly next to my own. Specially if they produce the same stuff as I do. But it would be great if own sectors would be more usefull. All 3 Points together are in most cases not worth the trouble it takes to steal a Sector from another faction.
Aside from 'because I can', not a bad reason to take over for sure, it can be a useful tool in shaping your galaxy. If a sector gets cleared out or you take over and remove ownership of a previously neutral sector, that sector becomes a free for all for the npc factions logic. Your plans for an area may not want any faction to take over depending who builds first, so you can take it yourself. That doesn;t stop ohter factions placing def stations as well, but it can help to say stop argon immediately taking xenon space you have cleared if you perhaps wanted to encourage another faction to move in. Once that chosen faction builds the admin module, prune any other unwanted ones and drop your own claim... Similarly, you can box in a faction you are at war with perhaps. At least until the diplomacy functions arrive next year :D
I would like an option to make peace. I do like the idea of controlling expansion in certain ways, especially if we go to a universal conflict! (How the current poll is looking)
Owning sectors can help to prevent factions to get too powerfull by preventing them from building too many assets. In my vanilla game, Teladis are out of control, eradicating Xenon if I don't mitigate their economy. So I start to steal their sectors, cleaning their stations (thanks to selling destroyers to HOP), and owning those sectors prevent them from coming back. Also, it seems one can babysit Xenon sectors by surrounding them with player owned sectors. Factions, if I'm not mistaking, seem to not attack Xenons sectors if they are not their direct neighbour.
It would be cool if Egosoft added a periodic tax for every plot you have in a faction's space, rather than a one-time tax. That would encourage you to setup your in your own sectors to maximize profit. On that note, i think personel should also be paid on a regular base and not just a one-time fee upon hiring.
The interworlds mod does for ships… not people. It costs to keep ships operational and that mechanic is cool and I like it. Makes you prioritize what you build and how your fleet is made up.
Never owned a sector, thought the same as you, admin center's were required, I knew the original owner would not change till all their admin centers in the sector were destroyed, but didn't know about other buildings. I love the lets talk series, I try to keep up with the let's plays but to be honest I get 2-3 episodes into one and fall so far behind I just find something else to watch. Let's talk series is something I can digest far more easily. There was a streamed let's play of X3 litcube's universes by a guy named dizzy on youtube where he did all the interesting stuff on stream and did a lot of the build up of his empire off stream and that gave him a chance to do a good summary of what's going on and what his objectives were that stream that I've never seen anyone duplicate and I've watched that let's play multiple times. Wish more people would try a series like that. Kind of condense down the hours required to keep up with a let's play.
Talk shows run in the men of my family, I'm finding I'm not different. Found your series today, 21st century talk radio, so much better than talk radio of the 80s. I. rarely. sub. ... Subbed.
Damn that Answers a question I had I was trying to take over avarice (For the good of the inhabitants) because I destroyed the VIG and took their sectors during the final mission of the avarice questline. Then if you don't flip their sectors every time you get near a station even your own a security vessel will scan you and force your delivery vessel to eject foods/water because VIG still has police authority, I wasn't causing any permanent damage just sniping their admin centers with an Asgard but now I know why avarice 1 refused to flip and it is because I have to shoot their L fabricator too...
While I really enjoy this game and it fills a lot of the the things I wanted in a space game after about 600 hours I have noticed a lot of glaring issues. It really feels like a lot of features in this game don't have much depth to them at all. Sector ownership/diplomacy is one of them. Yeah I found a little niche in making raw materials illegal to nearly monopolize my trade with the boron and make them dependent on me but outside of that there's not much else outside building a drug factory next to a free port in a sector I own so I don't have to think about police stopping me. The mechanics of having your own police also feels rough around the edges. If you aren't careful, it seems like they can easily become relation destroyers while at the same time just completely ignoring the 5 mining ships holding methane I declared illegal. On top of that, sometimes they have some odd propensity to become suicide magnets to khaak stations. With diplomacy I find it bizarre you can declare war but there's no real way to make peace. Instead declare war feels like a "let's just exterminate each other for eternity" button. I remember finishing the Kingdom's end missions and the Boron declared an attack on Argon would be treated like an attack on them. Well I see other than them having a fleet in each others territory not much has changed and the Argon don't seem to care all that much whenever my police decides to gun down the poor boron trying to smuggle ice. I do hope they do improve on the current existing mechanics sooner or later. I was shocked to hear when timelines released the Sapporo it was just some ship that existed without an identity. At least they did later made changes to that ship from what I have heard.
They did. It radar range is larger and has anti-fighter missiles. In terms of mechanics... I'd like to see them do something like the Interworlds mod. Citizenship plus Rep and then the idea of replenishment for your ships/crew. BUT it does make things a bit more complicated. lol Gotta find that middle ground.
Owning the sectors I want to build in is extremely important to me. As you ask the question though... I don't know why I care. I do. I definitely do. But sector ownership really just only makes things harder for me. Im then solely responsible for sector security... Why do I do this to me?
I would love where you can own sectors and develop your own faction with their own ships/people. Could be a mix and match of existing ships but make it your own with unique changes. Even if just cosmetic.
There are mods i'm sure. The Interworlds Mod touches on this with different factions providing different hard points for ship, letting you fly across the galaxy to min/max your ship! Or if you mean different peoples, it would be cool if the Avarice bio domes had all factions living in them.
Somebody did a post on Steam on Egos plans announcement that talked of this. Personnel uniforms, training centers like a Starfleet Academy, expand on the roles of NPCs, giving more depth to your headquarters and faction. Would be very cool.
I'd like to see expanded command for S/M class ships.... Like the Turrets, target fighter, target turrets, etc. But your own growth in a sector and your own people would be pretty cool! Having your own faction!
One thing I discovered in a universe where I claimed multiple sectors is that your Station Managers seem to prefer sending subordinate miners to mine in sectors in which you have uncontested ownership of. For example, I too put a manufacturing complex in Heretic's End, and the manager of that station sent its ore and silicon miners to mine in Hatikvah's Faith, which I had also claimed.
That might be more to do with the higher Ore Density in Hatikvah's Faith, I noticed the same as my ships went to Hatikvah's faith but manually restricted them to mine in watchful gaze because It was less travel and reasonably dense and therefore more time efficient, (I also scrambled to steal watchful Gaze early in the game to claim it as my own before the Boron.)
This really needs depth as it feels more "scripted" than giving any meanigful value. Hopefully with the new roadmap announced, diplomacy (wars/other mechanics) should araise and give more value to it
Really wish owning a sector would give certain bonuses, or even unlocks ships variants or something. Or even beter, gives you access to the planet that is in that sector (if there is one) And it providing consumer goods or something along those lines.
What is it good for? Well, you can rename the sectors... And as a bonus you can hear the AI voice say whatever name you want for your sectors. But honestly I do it for RP usually.
I understood it like this: 80% distorting other factions and 20% of reaping benefits (just to leave all the rocks for myself) I can see myself doing some tricks with argons when there is a war between them and Terrans, but all other factions just seem too isolated and self-sufficient, hence I have no idea why to bother with sector ownership
If you build up Heretics end to help the boron I see the worth. But you don’t actually have to own the sector. I think a pirate play through and controlling major travel sectors would be a cool idea.
Agreed that this should be revamped in a patch, and can definitely provide better incentives. For now some mods can provide such extra gameplay elements, for example the Sector Ruler mod. Taken form the description: "-For each sector owned you can increase the maximum amount of supplies at your disposal. -Owning sectors also grants a passive income, due to land and mining rights. -Stations you own in owned sectors can produce income from their populations. -Owning more than the sector threshold will trigger a galaxy wide crysis where all major powers will be allied among them and at war against you." It has more stuff though but perhaps this part can be isolated. Overall I think also that there should be various factors that can help decide to invest in taking over a sector. Connection to the network (taxing gates ? or controlling traffic to some extent), Resources availability (for taxing stations on mining activities or for hugging resources for yourself and banning other miners), Pirate activity (owning the sector could unlock collaboration options with pirates, like becoming a haven), Hazardous zones, Potential planet and terraforming synergies (for workforce bonus or trading boost etc)... and then it could even impact the political standing with other factions..
That’s cool there is a mod out there to add some changes in respect to owning a sector. For you last paragraph, I honestly think there should be a payment system like you the player has to do to build a station in their space. But you can make all the wares illegal and have a substantial police force to enforce it. Then you can strangle the economy in a different sector. I might play around with that idea since Paranid and Zyarth both traverse Heretic’s end.
In my Terran Playthrough i claimed Almost all of Zyarth Territories (because they were Xenon by the time i got there) And i noticed that Zyarth did build some structures in Family Nhuut and tried to rebuild some of its economy i guess (only got Zyarth Dominion home and the first Wretches Skyes, all other sectors were Xenon and after, mine). Also another thing i noticed is that when i was constructing a station in MY territory using an Elephant from Zyarth, a squad of Boron tried to take it out and i had to kill them, BUT i didn't get any reputation drop from the Boron... i thought that since i own the sector there is no rep drop whatever you kill there (or increase). But i can be wrong, have to try with other things.
Zyarth is typically first to fall to xenon. But that is interesting…. The Boron are enemies of Zyarth. Not sure why you didn’t get negative rep either. 🤔
the only sector i own in my main save is the mist of artemis. it was not claimed and it had everything i needed for a private shipyard so i claimed it and blocked the gate off. good times
@@T-Skillet HOP got lucky and pushed the xenon out of there while i was still building my main shipyard in 18 billion. i did have to get rid of the SCA that was there but one asgard beam cleaned that infestation right up. :) also i renamed it the Eye of Terra.
Didn't know that other station parts could claim a sector. As for Sector owning... 1. cutting of a Faction 2. replace a faction by taking all their sectors with no way to escape that's all i see in it. Not really worth it unless it's part of the RP.
Right! Never occurred to me, I went through steam, Reddit, the forum on egosoft and they all said the same thing. Until I happened upon the wiki page and it made sense.
I switched over a couple years ago to only playing the SWI mod (Star Wars Interworlds), and that map offers alot of variety. Some times I will play as a Warlord and take a sector with some key resource (like a scarp fields on Endor, etc..), build massive defensive and keep out the other four criminal enterprises ignoring the galactic civil war taking place.
That universe is just so large! I can see ownership being important. But also to keep station NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE SECTOR!!!! Jesus the flight times in that mod are ridiculous! 😂
I have always wondered why the game does not include more mechanics around ownership, because currently it’s almost pointless. I am not aware of a way to profitably enforce rules, and I have read that if you do try you can just wind up at war with everyone I’ve it! If we could enforce taxes or some such that would be good. At a MINIMUM I think the factions should pay ME for their darned plots when they come into a sector *I* secured no thanks to them. They demand payment right quick when I build in their place. I find it irritating when they fecklessly stand by while I clear out xenon and even if I claim the sector the leeches come in and build on like a dozen plots. Not cool, Argon leeches! 😉
😂😂😂Argon leeches! That’s great, they are the only faction I’ve never seen successfully fight back the xenon and take the sector. Teladi and Paranid have though!
Indeed! Paranid know how to fight without the player. Especially HOP, they seem to ALWAYS handle their business in every game I have seen, and they never tire of building Ody’s in my Shipyards! I approve!
Ok one, love the video info is great, just one comment and forgive me for critiquing, i know how hard it is to edit videos as it is, try editing the references your using into the video maybe? Like putting a screenshot of what your are reading? even if it is just a bullet point. BUT I do like the video!🥰
It the editing software I use. I have been playing around with a different one that allows me to do more things and is a lot more user friendly. I’ll start doing more videos with the new one as I become more comfortable with it though.
That’s true! No need to really have a sector unless you are really RP’ing in my mind. But there are people that find ownership valuable in their own play through.
There's no real reason to build much of anything yourself in this game tbh, let a lone claim a sector. I love the game, and I can find a lot of fun inside of it, but it's not really an empire builder game. I don't know what it is, and I don't think devs do either.
I think building stations is key to the game. You can influence a lot by having a much needed, energy cell factory or graphene. But you are also right, you don't technically have to build anything in the universe.
I've been playing x4f well over 600 hrs and just built my first station. LOL I often feel overwhelmed with all the things to do, all my ships to manage, fleets, trading, guarding self, protecting others, mining, focal sectors I'm interested in, Hitch hiking, flying, dogfighting, ship design, personnel promotion and transfer, living in/personalizing, ship discovery, sector exploration, missions, reputation management, keeping the xenon under control, the list goes on!!! So much to do and have barely scratched the surface of the game, let alone what Bernd wants players to do by starting multiple starts, playing a while and starting another. Still on my first start: Argon. My inbox is just too full. 😂
I currently own a few sectors just for the fun of it, the bragging rights, the RP and the cool factor.
They should include property taxes, that will make ownership useful lol
Right!! I’d cap sectors with scale plate in them then. Lol no more pirating for you!!!
I approve!
Oh!! Nice!
You can harvest other factions, is the main draw for me.
Like pirating their ships or stealing their goods?
Ok one, love the video info is great, just one comment and forgive me for critiquing, i know how hard it is to edit videos as it is, try editing the references your using into the video maybe? Like putting a screenshot of what your are reading? even if it is just a bullet point. BUT I do like the video!🥰
It the editing software I use. I have been playing around with a different one that allows me to do more things and is a lot more user friendly. I’ll start doing more videos with the new one as I become more comfortable with it though.
Owning a sector makes no sense atm in this game. Its better to let neutral sectors as they are.
