Working on the Motor, Pulleys and Guard for Our HEAVY DUTY Tool Post Grinder! | Part 3
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- Get ready for another exciting instalment of our DIY tool post grinder build! In this episode, we dive into the motor mounting process, using our milling machine to drill and tap the base for a secure fit. We also machine up a custom spacer to ensure a snug mount on the lathe's top slide. Then watch as we craft the pulley system, complete with precision reaming and broaching of keyways, setting the stage for efficient power transmission. To ensure safety, we also fabricate a protective guard from sheet metal and securely bolt it in place. With the motor mounted and the pulley system complete, our tool post grinder is taking shape. In the next episode we'll tackle the VFD connection and conduct our first test run. Stay tuned to see this project come to life!

yes i missed you !!
Absolutely! (And Homey)
Here comes the weekend and another CEE video… whoop whoop! 🥳🥳🥳
did you even have to ask .. I think we all missed you ..
Good that you two took a quick holiday. No bandages on the head. So it was peaceful. Now back to 12 hour days putting out superior quality repairs.🦘👍🏻
Cee has the best comments I have ever seen on UA-cam no trolly no hating nothing but nice people saying nice things enjoying what we watch you all give me a little hope in humanity
We've got the best community on UA-cam!
Those split screen shots are amazing! I can really see all the moves more clearly. Thanks guys. 👍🙂
That’s because it’s a legend of a channel ! All three of you guys are amazing folks . Of course I said three because Homey is the real star of the show 😂 . We love you guys !!! ❤
Because we all in bloody awe of both the artisan craftsman and the content pixie ;)
The haters are always around there's just nothing to hate on!
Karen, the split screen of Kurtis operating the lathe in addition to the close up works brilliantly! Great innovation!
Worked as an engineer for 50 years but still find your video's fascinating. I'm 10 years retired now but still miss the challenge.
" need the job perfect, cheap oh and yesterday "
Happy days.
Always nice to see Kurtis smile, even if it’s only in the “oh, damn” trailers…. Karen, your work is incredible and the angles, split screens, and slo-mo clips are always superbly timed and inserted. Yes, Kurtis’ skill and knowledge of his world is impressive, but your way to document and convey it to us allows us to appreciate his work all the more. I eagerly await every episode. What a team! Greeting from Minnesota, USA.
Love the split screen Karen, Keep up the great work. Friday's would not be the same without you guy's.
She is getting better & better…don’t know why UA-cam doesn’t have her teaching classes for content creators 🤩🤩😄
I love the split screen too. Love watching all the movements it takes to drill a simple hole
💯
yeah, I was going to comment on that, it was pretty cool to see both how Kurtis is operating the machine and what is being done to the work piece.
@@kylebracht and tap as well, don't forget!
Feels like I get withdrawals when yall don’t post 🤣🤣 itching for the next video every time!
Same here, I start my Fridays with a cup of coffee in front of the TV refreshing my feed until the video appears!
Yeah, I have been watching some old video's insted.
Right?😂
Me too
💯
Love your work! Old tooler tip, ALWAYS ring your grinding wheel before mounting. Tap the wheel, listen for ring, means it's in one piece and won't explode on startup.
Good tip thanks for sharing
I ran a cylinder surface grinder. A person has to take very light passes because if you went too hard the cup
would overheat ang explode. Lots of fun. Had a foreman who thought things were going too slowly and decided to push it. I told him what was going to happen but he was a freshly graduated Chemical Engineer and was smarter than everyone else.
@@kenore4003 LOL Sounds about right! Educated idiots competing for Darwin awards.
Yep had that happen once, right nasty surprise. Also, don't forget the bloody things have an expiration date and can be pretty dodgy after that date too.
Great to have you back. Kurtis epitomizes common sense and gut-feeling when dealing with problems. A seemingly rare quality in this day and age. Love Karen's cinematography!
This is the most HD Toolpost grinder I’ve ever seen made by a machinist. Kurtis is so good at pretty much everything. He makes quite a few of his own tools and they’ve always turned out great. As a home machinist dabbler I always learn something new.
The posters here are very respectful. This is something I miss very much. One of my vehicles has Sirius and I only listen to the Classic Radio channel. It has many of the classics from the 40’s and 50’s. I miss the way they were so respectful, mature, so self assured and so optimistic for the future. Listening to those old programs is like therapy to me. There is something in their voices that is as clearly different as a Deep South drawl. It is an accent that we no longer have. I know I’m getting old and I guess I’m sounding old too.
I think I must be in my second childhood, it is like being back in the eighties again when we only had 3 tv channesl in the UK and rushing home from school to watch your favourite progarmme 🙂 I had a sense of disapointment last week that I havent experienced for 40 years when there was no CEE show
@@michaelbarter4216 indeed, it felt very strange and familiar at the same time 🤣✅
Have been watching this today, it’s a great little set of three videos with Kurtis making special tools, I love ALL the shop made videos and more. Excellent viewing every time.
I’m ready for tomorrow’s latest content! See you in the morning!😀😎

Curtis ! How nice to see, Karen and Homie to the Friday machining video to sooth my soul. As ALWAYS you have givin me a nice hour or so to remember how it was when I was a lot younger and as spry as you two. The good old days eh. Onward my dear friend, ONWARD !
Your craftsmanship is in a league all its own! I love watching you make your own tools and any kind of machine restoration. Can't wait for the next Franna crane episode. Greetings from Huntsville, AL!
I needed to make a toolpost grinder when I was younger and was working for John Martz Luger Carbine maker. I used a Precise high speed air powered and fluid cooled grinding head which worked exceedingly well. I was manufacturing sling swivels for John Martz' Luger Carbines and needed to grind the wood screw thread so, I could use them in the hard English Walnut forends and rear stocks. I must say that I was able to grind very accurate and highly polished wood threads into the sling swivels. I also had to make the mechanical device to grind a curved section at the tip and grind a slight taper on the shaft. I then finished them in a fine satin rust blue and occasionally I see these on the Internet.
I think that I get better results grinding when the grinder is spinning up around 60,000 rpm and I use Silicon Carbide wheels.
The Motor is from a Company called 'Getriebebau Nord' and it is located in Bargteheide, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Pretty cool to see a product from the town where I live.
@@thorstenwolters9025 yes the company is mainly focused on industrial gearbox, I work in the France assembly factory
I live in the USA and see Nord gearboxes and motors at many customer sites - they're very popular for industrial mixer drives. Very high quality and great reputation in the market!

Yes, we all missed you three last week. Karen, your video work is the best on You Tube, your split screen views are great. Kurtis, i have over 60 years in the same type of work as you, but I learn from you every week. I know you are both very busy, but we would love more installments of your work. All the best from West Texas.
Wow, thank you!
Smile Kurtis , the new chopper’s are magnificent 👍
6:38 the editing during repetitive tasks is really well done.
Outstanding job on that assembly. Thank you for explaining the "hows and whys" of what you are doing.
I am always in awe of CEE workmanship. Curtis bruised, callous and bleeding hands and arms really show how hard his job is even though his careful demeanor. Gob bless you both.
not sure what he was doing, as working with metal can be boring, but she is very professional with camera, Video edit, effects. Very entertaining, tks for uploading.
I like the split screen showing Kurtis working at the mill and simultaneously showing the work itself. Well done. It shows very clearly how adept and efficient he is in his movements. (when he isn't dropping wrenches that is)
A prime example of why this channel is therapy for the perfectionist’s soul…at about 19:36…I was yelling “you have to lift that left side with a screwdriver to level it before welding!!!”…and then BAM!…one second later…Kurtis has a screwdriver under the left side and has it leveled perfectly before tacking!! Ahhhhh. Siiiigh!! Thanks for being so wonderfully careful Kurtis!!!
Love the split screen Karen 😍 its as interesting to see what is being adjusted and set as the tool cutting , great addition 👍
When CEEA posts a new video, it makes my day. Thanks!
Very good explinations as to what you are doing. Also love the split screen!!!!!!! I'm not a metal worker guy, lots of wood tough, but I have watched you enough to pretty much know what your going to do next. Great videos, & awesome editing Karen, Kudos!!!!!!!!!!
That split 1/2 and 1/2 rear shot of the mill and close up was brilliant. Really shows off the skill and mental awareness it takes to operate. You don’t always get that sense with the close ups if you’ve never operated those machines before.
👏 👏 👏 👏
I kept coming to your page everyday to check to see if id missed the notification of yall posting a new video! Hopefully yall and homeless got some much needed r&r on your time away!
That subtle flex of using the last of the spindle momentum to let the tap bite perfectly plumb before disconnecting it from from the chuck and working with the iron :)
12:28 Excellent idea using the lathe!! .. I don't believe I've seen that done before!!
14:43 Beautiful!!! :)
Thanks Kurtis, Karen and Homi for another nice part of the build. Cheers 👍💪✌
Hope you had a good holiday nice to see you back
I enjoyed seeing you show the calculations for the mounting holes drill locations. Maths geek!
I had withdrawal symptoms from having no CEE video to watch last week. Lol. Greetings from South West Wales, UK. 🏴 🇬🇧
...and hello from the state of New South Wales in Australia.
Love the series for this tool. For aligning the sheaves, I like to use a laser pointer. They are typically round and you can lay them in the groove and sweep the laser across the opposite sheave. That way the grooves are lined up rather than the edge of the sheaves.
Welcome back from your break. I am currently waiting out the hurricane here in Florida, so this is a great uplift.
Stay safe!
Keep building your new toys, you have all of us drolling... Greetings from Mexico
Dude, that's amazing, you got all that stuff for you. This is how you get what you want artwork. Good for you. Do it while you're young. I enjoy watching it all the stuff you do. I hope you show us putting that Crane back together while in hydraulic hoses and electrical.Good God, man, good for you.Get after it, that's what I want to see.
I guess it will take some time. That crane is obviously a side project he works on when he has some time over.
What an amazing job as always mate many thanks for sharing this and all the best to you and your family and your friends
Excellent job with the multiple view. Way to show the work in a better way, nice job Karen.
Is it weird to enjoy people making stuff to make stuff??
Yey my Friday is complete this week thanks guys missed you last week. Great video as usual and funny out takes
I really like how you measure using the “wobbler”, seems to make life a lot easier, great bit of kit.👍😎
Yes, I missed your weekly video last week. Love the split screen vision Karen. Well done. That's next level stuff.
I watch in astonishment as you create things right before my eyes !!! Those key ways were amazing to make, and whenever I look at a key way now, I'll think of you doing one !!!! It's talent and skill - and you have it Kurtis !!!! Machining is precision work done by amazing people !!!!! I watch every video you make !!! Love the dog and the bird !!!!!
Just discovered the CEE channel but have driven past your shop a million times. I work at Mackellar and get the opportunity to rebuild most of the CAT stuff, super cool to see how the repair jobs we send away are completed
😎👍
Those satisfying sounds of metal parts clinking together perfectly or the squirting of liquid is almost erogenous
I really like how you both work together and still love each another…Not many relationships can withstand that but your love for each other shines brighter than polished chrome 🥰😄🤩

One beast of a grinder!! Liked how you edited the divet, drill, counter sink, thread sequence along with the split screen. You guys do a remarkable job with the channel.
Karen, when you show Kurt screwing bolts by hand in fast motion, you need to add an air wrench sound. That would be funny.😂
...buddy.. broaching on lathe.... perhaps I'm been living under a rock. Have not seen that done before. Love it
I really like how you made the guard for the belts, very simple yet effective way to make the curved parts. 100% will steal the design in the future.
Also how ridiculous does that 300-400A MIG gun look welding 1.5mm sheet steel lol
He is very pragmatic , not gonna worry about things that don't truly matter .
Step bit , hand drilling and tapping , no problem . He saves the precision for where it counts .
@@kaboom4679 Agreed. Kurtis makes sure we get precise giggles from every blooper reel. Perfectly captured and compiled by Karen for our enjoyment.

Excelente trabalho amigos!!!
Boa sorte sempre!!!
Another satisfying show! Thanks! Maybe one day you'll give us a video tour of the place and talk about your plans for the future of the shop!
Love these videos. Always interesting how you can build this machinery and make it look so good . Way better than the store bought stuff.
Looks like it should work as you want it to. Should be a good addition to your tool collection.
My dog, Piper, is busy watching Bluey. I'm busy watching my version of Bluey....The Kurtis and Karen Show. It's really good. Comes on most Friday mornings here in California.
Just because I am dumb, I never understood how a broach worked. Did not realize that they are tapered and do not fully cut the keyway until it goes all the way thru and you put the spacer in. Keep up the good work you guys, another awesome video.
2:02 AM in Wisconsin just in time to watch next installment of this tool build.
No video last week but that just mean more time for me to rewatch old videos and understand more about what you were working on. Still it's great to see you back!
Cool - I have learned my profession as a mechanic at the Getriebebau NORD GmbH & Co. KG located in Northern Germany long time ago. I was always wondering, where these products are gone to. Nice to see that they made it down to Australia. Even much better that they will do their duty now in one of my favourite YOU TUBE locations. Greetings to down under. 🙂
I work actually at Nord in France as a maintenance guy I was shocked 😂
How cool is that! 🤩
I love how sharp your drill bits are and that you never seem to snap a tap. You are an artist.
Greetings from Germany
Great stuff (like every time)
for the next Q&A:
How are the different tools / fixtures / etc. für the different jobs / parts machines stored?
How do you find them?
I think, Kurtis has NOT alll in his mind
Another idea:
i think it would be interest, that you give an overview over the jobs which we can see in the background (graders, excavators etc. in the jard, pallets near the big door etc.)
*Cutting Edge Engineering Australia* Bravo well done, thank-you booth for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
As Homey retreated inside from the rain, he seemed to be trying to describe how the sky was falling! Love that doggo! All those expensive and specialized machines and he's still your most prized belonging..... As it should be! Besides your precious Mrs. that is.
Karen, the editing is getting better and better. Great job! It's a pleasure to watch
What a craftsman
Together you both inspire and encourage me to do so much more. You have repeatedly shown me what is possible.
Thank you so much.
There they are, now i can finally relax and watch some skilled work
You make beautiful things. I'm lazy so I make it correct the first time, thus not needing to waste more time later by needing to redo and make it RIGHT. You're right up my alley.
SEAMS LIKE IAM ALWAYS HANGING OUT FOR ANOTHER CEE VIDEO , LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS AND LOVE YOU BOTH AND OF COURSE BEAUTIFUL HOMELESS .
I love the split screen views Karen. Thank you for posting, it's always a treat
Good to see you back, missed out last week. Looking forward to watching this one.
holiday? or more important things?
Really loved watching this build take shape. I always find the humor of CEE being so precise with everything and then he breaks out the 12" crescent wrench to tight the 13mm nuts on the shield. 🤣🤣Keep up the great videos.
That is some high tech coolant you are using. LOL Excellent work from the best team in UA-cam.....
Thank goodness, my week has been off since last friday morning. welcome back, I hope you got some well deserved rest and relaxation.
ANOTHER CEE VID - My day is made!! I love the side-by-side views! Karen, you do the best video editing of any UA-cam vids out there!
Love this channel!
Wow, thank you!
I never thought about using my tail stock to push the broach. I've learned something else today. I enjoyed watching sir!
You could turn up a cap to fit over your tailstock spindle for broaching. Would free up a hand.
Blows me away the knowledge and skill
Hell yes we missed you. Glad you're back to brighten up our week!

Welcome back. It’s good to see that Curtis hasn’t lost his impeccable grasp of the King’s english (love the out takes!). This is a great series and I’m looking forward to seeing her grind parts as smooth as a baby’s bum. 🥸👍👀👋✅
I absolutely loved the way you put a chamfer on the back od of the spacer before parting it off, definitely a great time saver.
Friday and another p'fect video from CEEAu - let's start the weekend 😉
That Tool Post Grinder is for sure one of a kind, guard for grinding stone in next episode I bet?
Comparable (0.75HP - 5" wheel, internal and external) units' costs > 5500USD - invested time and cost well worth it
The split screen was super cool to see what's automated and what you are doing manually
Yeay it's friday again. Greetings from a rainy Demnark...
Raining here in Atlanta Georgia (USA) also! Hurricane/Tropical storm "Helene" passing through right now. A good bit of flooding going on (Glad I'm on high ground)!
@PhilG999 mate its like 9c here in England raining and cold tropical weather is one thing me and krist know nothing about lol
From Canada at 2am
4:00am NewYork. So far so great. Can’t wait to see some grinding happening.😊
I was so amazed at how broaching was done! I had no idea that's how it worked! So cool!
Looks awesome. A couple of comments. I think the pulley ratio should be okay. Assuming an approximate 1450rpm no load speed, through a 1:3 pulley ratio, gives you a pretty solid 4000rpm once the pulley load is accounted for. That's well above most bench and surface grinders. With a decent vfd you should be able to easily get that upto 12,000rpm which is into angle grinder territory. Secondly, v-belts should be fine. Timing belts are really only necessary when you need absolute translation from input to output, but for this application it doesn't really matter if a belt slips, and in fact that might even be preferable under some circumstances. I've no doubt if you open the mill, lathe, or any other machine tool, that v-belts are used to transfer power from the motor to the spindle, so it's not like we're in unfamiliar territory. If anything, I'd maybe switch to three slightly smaller belts instead of the two thicker ones, but that's about it. Just my 2p
I would think a poly-v belt is the best solution for this setup.
@@markassink8552 a poly-v belt is a good shout. 👍🏻
12.000 rpm ?? That won't handle the grinding wheel, well here in Holland the max is 4500 rpm. check the info on the grinding wheel
@@andreklarenbeek369 for the external spindle with large 4"+ grinding wheels you'd definitely want to run it a lot slower (
I went to the dictionary to look up “stud horse” - and waddya know! There was a picture of the CEE tool post grinder! Yet another amazing shop-made tool. 🍺🍺👍👍
Phew!! I checked every 2 hours, since Friday night. Started to get really worried about you guys. Thank you soo much for another fantastic video. Stay safe and God bless.
For the tool post grinder, may I recommend the pink grinding wheel at about 46 Grit. I used to be a grinder/lapper and you'll want a diamond dresser for the the grinding wheel
