i'm posting this before the trailer comes out with 99% confidence that it won't contradict anything in this video ✌ also to be clear, which i apologize if i wasn’t - the “senpai” joke is directed at english-speaking people peppering it into english conversation to sound cute. not its native use in japanese. sorry again for not being specific.
The redub of Macross that had Rick using the word "sempai" constantly instead of "big brother" drove me completely nuts, given it was the only japanese word he used. Meanwhile they had Minmei with her original Japanese actress and songs, but it was super clear that English isn't the actual actress' first language... So many weird choices there.
@@ceasarsaran8573 Being Chinese is actually really important to Mulan's culture and background and you can't change that without radically altering the story. Being "white" isn't a important trait for those other characters, as evidenced by the fact you're using a super broad term rather than an actual specific location or culture or trait. What kind of white we talking here? French? Icelandic? Danish? German? Greek? Levantine? Canadian? Viking? Minnesota? What about those character's stories or personalities, the place they're set, the things that shape them, intrinsically changes by having them be more diverse? If you can't be more specific than "white", it doesn't matter that much. Meanwhile, you take Brave, and being Scottish is incredibly important to Merida. That culture and family heritage absolutely shapes the story, the character, her upbringing, her interests, the role her family has planned for her future. She HAS to be Scottish. You can't change that without changing the story, location, and character.
@@ceasarsaran8573 Do you think Europe didn't have black people in 1900? Just because they weren't in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice doesn't mean they weren't there. They've been there since *at least* the 15th century. We've had boats for quite some time. Julius Ceaser went to Egypt in like 48 B.C!
@@robbybevard8034 I mean yeah, most white people are mixed breeds..and I actually like the fact that Cinderella and Ariel have black versions now. It really improved the Ariel story last year...I mean she was already a fish out of water...that was only further emphasized by making her black. I also really like reading Christopher (and his laundry list of a name, lol) Charming and Eric as Asiatic princes (Hebrew features still count as Asiatic even if he's also British...because human life started in the countries of the Stans and Northern India where the four rivers meet) and how neat that everyone considers Paolo Montalbàn as the definitive Prince Christopher Charming....or is that Auguste like the 1971 Disney on Parade sequence (which his novel will be using) and Eric being adopted further proves how much he's like his wife.
The deepest problem with Snow White is the simple fact that people do not see femininity as a strength, and that extends into the value of friendship and others.
This is something I've lamented for a long time. The fact that women are told to act more like men by people who think femininity is undesirable. People have become so obsessed with fighting stereotypes about women that they are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Typical feminine traits are not something to be ashamed of. That doesn't mean we need to force them on anyone. It just means we can embrace and appreciate them.
@@ShyGuyXXL Feminine women are used and discarded. Life experience teaches women that "being feminine" in the stereotypical sense, is an open invitation for people to use and abuse you.
Honestly I think there's a way to square that circle with the film's stated goals if they were willing to see connecting with and serving people as a valid way to become a better ruler, but I'm not holding my breath
@@lyndonwesthaven6623 Agreed. The pieces are there to make Snow White an assertive, yet kind and encouraging diplomat. We even see that hinted in the original, she earned her right to stay with the dwarves not only by cleaning and cooking, but also enforcing manners and responsibility i.e. washing their hands before dinner. This makes her more worthy of queen than her stepmother, because she is both selfless AND assertive.
Something I've noticed with just about every Disney movie from before Princess And The Frog is that there are a lot of people who have either never watched the movie or who don't remember watching the movie who have internalized these buzzfeed-article simplifications which miss the point for the sake of being snarky/modern. Like takes that claim Beauty And The Beast is about Stockholm Syndrome or that The Little Mermaid is about abandoning everything you've ever known for the first dude you see. These aren't ideas that come from sitting down and actually watching these movies. Belle isn't staying despite being abused - the moment Beast actually scares her, she leaves. Ariel isn't abandoning things for Eric specifically - she's super interested in investigating human culture before she ever lays eyes on him. These are reductive reframings that center what the male love interest does over what the actual main character experiences. Snow White - as well as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid) - isn't about the prince, but she gets defined by him anyway.
which is kind of funny with the remakes specifically beauty and the beast and after is taking those as actual criticisms and use them as justifications of their own existence while in the process forgetting the original intent like beauty and the beast is the best example as it tries to explain plot holes that don't really serve much in the grand scheme of things like "why do the townsfolk not know of the castle? oh amnesia", "what happened to belle's mum? she dead" "does every object in the castle have a human counterpart? no lol"
Beauty and the Beast is not about Stockholm syndrome, it's about the repulsively entitled behavior of a very ugly character ironically named "Belle", for indeed, what is so beautiful about her? Her gratitude perhaps? Is she appreciative of the efforts of the "provincial" losers who were awake and working hours before dawn in order to gather the eggs and bake her the bread so important to her daily survival? No, she's too busy rolling her eyes and smirking at them, and essentially insulting them, albeit in such a charming manner! Hey Belle, much did you pay for that wonderful book you claim to value so much? Nothing? Oh, right -- one of those lamentable saps gave it to you for free. And we can tell how much you value it by the way you so carelessly let the first passing animal vandalize it within minutes. And how does she repay the Beast's kindness when he overlooks the way she essentially trespassed in his house and ate his food without permission? By immediately going to the one part of the castle he tells her to keep out of, interfering with the magic rose and putting his life at risk as a result. But hey, that's okay! Don't you dare criticize Belle, afterall she likes to read -- almost as much as a contemporary Karen likes to text while driving. How dare such fine upstanding people be challenged!
I don’t know how relevant this is, but I watched a beautiful Spanish film adaptation of Snow White called Blancanieves from 2013. It sets it in the 1920s and is done in the style of a retro silent film. Snow White is instead the daughter of a prestigious bull fighter, and then ends up joining a travelling matador group of dwarves. It’s so cute and heartwarming. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s a fan or even not a fan of the Snow White story. It has a real love for the fairytale story. I did not expect to see a video on Snow White today, but I greatly appreciate you sharing your insight and analysis as always.
@lyndonwesthaven6623 ik no, but I realy do dislike toru. Going on how everything is ok and letting her friend get harassed and accept it as love or something. At least snow white gets to scold grown ass men for lying and not washing up before eating and threatened to not feed them of they don't wash themselves. She may be a little child with very feminine personality, but she still has some motherly responsibilities and isn't a push over.
@@bigboomer1013 Mondo World actually has one for The Story of Snow White and Cinderella Monogatori....both following the Grimm versions to a degree (no messy shoe trials though)
I've always personally maintained that "The silly song" is one of the most important of the film. Because it's not that important, it's not that deep, it's the protagonists having a bit of fun and getting along while being earnest.
Hearing the theme song in the vid just brought the stupidest grin of nostalgia to my face 🥹 I haven't heard that name in so long, but man was I obsessed with the show while it was airing Update nobody asked for lol: rewatched a few episodes, and I'm happy to say it holds up! It's got good jokes/comedic timing and I laughed a lot more than I was expecting to 😊
I always ask if anyone who gets upset over the Prince kissing Snow White in her coffin has ever been to a funeral. Some people kiss their loved ones goodbye. He was obviously grieving and, if you think about it, returning the kiss she gave him in the start of the film. But the film isn't about him! It's not about their love story! It's about her kindness and sweet nature eventually saving her. I do love the original film, and it makes me so irritated to see people ragging on her for things that didn't happen in the film at all. I have no hopes for the live action, if it can hardly be called that with all the CGI. It reads a bit like Space Jam with the amount of animation around Rachel, who had some poor comments, and has, as far as I can see, a terrible dress. She's a very beautiful young woman, but they've styled her so badly it's such a shame! I really wish that when I say I expect the live action to be bad I don't get hit with a tidal wave of racism and sexism. It's really not her fault she had to parrot the stuff that the company likely wanted her to say, but it's very like the current Disney to completely misunderstand what made the original film so charming and strip it of that completely. They did it to Mulan, they did it to Belle, they're going to do it to Snow White.
As a huge monkey punch, satoshi kon and vintage anime fan in general your video essays are max entertaining and the quality is on point, looking forward to the next one
Happy to say that this has given me a brand new appreciation for Snow White, the character. That read on her innate kindness really struck me, and even if I still think the movie is just fine to good, if I see it again, I’ll definitely keep this lens in mind
A lot of the classic princesses are passive because they feature feminine traits like kindness as a virtue. If the remakes focused less on girlbossing them and more on developing the characters with that in mind, they might be better
@@shadowmaster1313 and this is why I think that the Enchanted Tales pitch didn't really need Jasmine's segment for that matter. It should have been exclusively Aurora, Belle, Mulan and Pocahontas in 2007. Ariel and Jasmine have two whole trilogies and a tv series each that they're a part of where they recieved much needed developement. Cinderella has two films and a proto-Sofia failed tv pilot (literally what Dreams Come True's 3 episodes are...insert Sofia there and the plot really doesn't change much, although the Prince would become Hugo instead of "I have the longest name ever that I shorten to Auguste or Kit" Charming) that develops her. Belle really needed a do-over because no one thought that through. Good tv title though. Maybe if her Enchanted Tales special worked...try again setting Magical World as a Post-Film true sequel to teach lessons to Chip and the Prince about what actions make a beast and a fragile little teacup. Mulan- see Belle because that was not at all a proper follow-up. She needed something more in character. Pocahontas- yes she has a dtv that gives her much needed developement, but it feels like it's meant to be a grand finale of a canned tv show that shows her transition to that point since they were clearly intending to give each Disney Princess a tv show before the line started. That might also explain why Mulan 2 is also so bad...there's a transition period that's missing. Snow White- why not show her and Prince Florian going on a trip and the Dwarfs making something special for them. Aurora *really* needed the developement...and this one aside from not retaining Jennifer Hale for who knows what reason and going with Erin Torpey (even though Jennifer like Kate Higgins currently actually sounds like Mary Costa's voice-match, but Higgins unlike Jennifer and Erin was actually allowed to sing for Aurora and she can do so with her cover of Once Upon A Dream in Disney Merch. Kinda weird that Jennifer didn't get to sing for Cinderella though...I mean you literally get Sally McKnight aka "Thorn" to be Cinderella after Ilene Wood's retirement and her Thorn voice sounds very much like 1950 sassy Cindy and you never let her sing? I mean sure Tami Tappan and Susan Stevens Logan do alright, but ah? Why isn't Jennifer singing? Oh yeah...Jennifer's not allowed to be the actually sassy Cindy, she has to be plastic.)...they actually managed to keep her gracefulness intact...most of the time...should have just shown two Aurora stories and then done the other princesses.
I recently found out that there was a Snow White miniseries from Dark Horse that was actually really good! It fleshed her and the prince out some, and that part in particular was really cute. It didn't try to drastically reinterpret or deconstruct the film, but it also wasn't exactly a straightforward adaptation.
Oh thank you for pointing this out as I didn't really have a place for it! It's by Cecil Castellucci and Gabriele Bagnoli and it's very very cute, I think my one problem is that they rely a bit too heavily on internal dialogue (the gimmick is that it's all from Snow White's POV) but overall it's adorable (and also confirms my theory that Snow White is just primordial shoujo) ❤️
@@solivagen435 more of a set-up to the film before a retelling of the film proper. The first issue is all about how The Prince and Snow White meet (and neither are aware of the other being the Prince and Princess and play along with it because they like playing games) and he helps her with her chores and she teaches him gardening...then it goes into the movie's main events. You can also read it as this one fan-art cosplay of a certain 2000's nerdy couple getting together in a fun way...I mean Snow White and The Prince are pretty much the original Tecna and Timmy...in more ways than just being short haired.
@@Superlad9494 That's cute; they start out as friends before getting together. Also, let me tell you... gardening can be challenging. I remember growing only ONE watermelon before the vines' roots died. Honestly, my family was busy, and now that I think about it, it was a rough spot to grow things lol.
Thank you so much!!! As a fellow Snow White enjoyer I've been so frustrated with the conversation around this movie. It's so annoying when I want to have a discussion about a piece of media that involves rascisim and hate around the casting choices. Like do I think Rings of Power is good??? Hell no! But is it because they cast POC actors??? No!! That never even crossed my mind!!! And same with Snow White. I'm scared of talking about it online since it seems to summon racists to the conversation. I absolutely love that you brought up how it's a story about community and found family - and you're absolutely right that we need something like that right now! A story about a young girl with a wealthy background who runs away from her abusive family, is homeless, and taken in by people as a worker, only to bond with them and experience actual love and acceptance is such a sweet story, and I'm not sure how I've never seen it like that before. I love that so much.
I’m only a third of the way through, but I need to say that this video is so cathartic that it eased my back pain and added several years to my lifespan.
The hard cut to camcorder footage of that Detective Mickey stage show with Lupin III music in the background is wayyy funnier to me than it should be lmao
Not even done with the video yet but thank you for highlighting that the core of the Snow White movie was her relationship with the dwarves! Literally near tears rewatching it for the first time since childhood last year because of how well the movie built their friendship. It really is a film you watch with your heart rather then your head, as you said. And the comparison of Snow White as a mahou shoujo protagonist is chef's kiss !
i used to watch snow white all the time as a child not for any reason in paticular (i really didnt remember half of it growing up) i think for the most part i used it as background noise as i drew and coloured but i think its a good story on found family that most modern audiences could be really drawn to these days. bob iger (my personal nemisis) made the decision to move away from "personal" stories and experiences and really shot disney in the foot with it. snow white could be made into a movie about the idea of making your own happiness during rough times with the people around you but it easier to slap a millenial buzzfeed girl boss story over the top of it. i like the idea of shoujo protaganist snow white and i think its possible to modernise an adaptation as long as you keep the real essence of the story and make it out of appreciation for its idea and stature as a classic and pioneer in animations not in spite of it
First: you gave me such nostaligia showing those dwarf toys where you use water to make their faces/accessories change I wanted those so bad as a kid lol Second: I did not expect to tear up at the end with the little chosen family speech, thank you. I now finally understand why my aunt loved Snow White so much while I found it a bit boring as a kid who watched it a lot with her only because it made her happy (but I did like the dwarves). Great video, as always. Really well organized, edited, and thoughtful. Now if you all will excuse me, I'm going to pick up that Snow White dvd I keep seeing at my local thrift store and watch it again.
Fuck Disney. That being said, I don’t really see the reason in people getting up in arms about the Snow White remake. Well, outside of “grifter” reasons. Best thing to do is ignore it and let it vanish. Still, I value your opinion, Real Life Snow White!
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was one of two Disney movies I had at home growing up, I had that and Pinnochio on VHS. So even though I was born in 1999 I didn't really know many movies from the Disney Renaissance like most people in that generation. I think I caught Aladdin and its sequels, as well as Hercules a few times on TV. But not often enough to really become familiar with those stories. So I always felt like the weird kid because I didn't know who Belle or Mulan were but my favourite Disney princess was Snow White because I watched that movie over and over again, after I begged my parents to buy it for me on a flea market. And I agree with lots of your takes! That movie was never about the prince (that didn't even have a name!), it was about the people in the title. And you're also correct in saying that Snow White's strength lies in kindness and openness to everyone. Those values have basically been imprinted onto me. So I really hope that this remake will stick to those. I remain wary of the need for a remake, as I always do but this story is important to me personally. And that's exactly why I have issue with all the loud opinions flying around. Most people who are on Twitter and in UA-cam comment sections haven't grown up with the original movie. Most probably haven't seen it or maybe only seen it once. It baffles me how loud the hate for this movie is by people who don't really have a stake in this. Who don't really have a reason to care... (The racism left aside because that's a whole nother can of worms...) It makes zero sense to me that so many people are jumping on a hate train over a movie that 1) hasn't even come out yet, and 2) doesn't even mean anything to them personally!? So thank you for your take on it because while I'm not a defender of this movie, I am tired of people complaining, who wouldn't even like the original. I like it. Sure, some things are kinda weird or even highly problematic to our modern sensibilities but Disney's version of Snow White shaped me more than few other things have. So if I'm having issues with the remake, I feel like that's valid but I personally didn't get vocal about the Lion King remake because I have only seen the original movie in full... Maybe twice?
Your channel has always been criminally underrated and under...viewed(?) for your production quality and charm, and never have I met someone that has so perfectly and succinctly complimented my feelings on Lupin, Tim Burton, and others until I came across your channel. Thank you for everything that you do
I think True Love Kiss was mandela bcs of the Shrek film imo. I did not expect Snow White being compared shoujo anime girls. It makes so much sense now 👏👏👏Btw love watching ur videos and ur analysis on them ❤
The clip at 8:46 is ICONIC. I remember watching this as a kid, putting on a towel as a cape, and walking from the upstairs to the basement of our house, and the layout made it possible to walk around and around in circles.
Another thing about Snow white's race that is kinda shocking to me. Is the amount of people who wanted the actress to be Asian, because Asians have white skin. Not knowing the harmful reasons for it. As well as some Asian views of any time someone has tan skin in or out of, I will admit from what I seen Japan, they are seen as ugly. As well as people not even knowing about tan skin Asian or feeling they are not Asian enough, cause in there words, they are not pretty. Like bro, some people just be so wild... Also insert the fact that people forget that Disney snow white is a teenager, who doesn't know a lot of the real world, due to being a royal who had there step mom take everything after her father died, and tried to kill her. But still gives kindness to others despite what has happened to her life.
I personally expectet the actress to have albinism I know the mom pleaded for a daughter with "skin withe as snow, hair black as ebony" but I tought it would be an interesting take on the name
@cherryflawa4868 I always thought white as snow meant unnatural because I'm pretty pale but I'm not snow pale, albinism with dark hair would be interesting (since the real condition affects all melanin) but definitely makes more sense to me than white as snow = any white girl
Uhm 1 the fairy tale might have a german one but that does mean it was set in Germany 2 this is based disney's version of snow white and disney fairy tales always differ wildly from source material
While I definitely almost blinded myself by how hard I rolled my eyes when Rachel was announced as Snow White, I never even thought of blaming her. My first thought was actually "Oh, sweety..." Because you know actors have to get paid and to a point you can't really fault them for going where the money is these days, but you just knew the all the vitriol that was headed her way. While we can sit behind our screens and think "Why would anyone do that to themselves?" who knows what they first told her to get her interested and under contract. Still not going to spend any money on it but eventually might watch if there's nothing else on and it shows up on one of my subscriptions.
This is a great, even-handed analysis of the Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the challenges of adapting it into newer versions, and I thank you for it. I rate the 1937 movie a bit more highly than you do, if still conceding it feels like six or seven Silly Symphonies strung together and yes the Washing Song goes on FOREVER. However, the themes of community and kindness really are so powerful-- plus I love the art style and nods to German expressionist filmmaking in the darker scenes. I generally love the early Disney films from the '30s and '40s if only because they offset their fairy tale worlds and cheery songs with some truly dark material. Also, playing the Lupin III music over Detective Mickey was *chef's kiss* That mix of constant Lupin III love and great commentary keep me coming back to this channel.
I know Walt Disney was a real person and Walt Disney was his real human name but seeing Walt Disney attributed to quotes with a speaking voice feels weirdly wrong somehow. Like you made a mistake and put a corporation instead of the speaker, but I know that you didn't.
14:09 Never in my life did I ever expect to hear the first Disney princess be compared an anime moe girl, and yet... it makes so much sense. And I'm aware of that manga story that panel comes from. Also, nice touch referencing Kingdom Hearts in the video chapters😄👍
FINALLY a critical examination of the live-action Snow White that acknowledges Rachel Zegler's talent and doesn't blame her for the downfall of Western Society™️
For me, I don't want the remake because I like the old one as it is: it was revolutionary, artistic, and comforting. It's like a big bowl of soup or rice pudding or something, just comfort food. But, remaking it doesn't eliminate the original, I just wish the remakes actually appreciated the originals and were more to pay tribute than to try to pander to modern audiences.
The comparison of SnowWhite being most like an Shojo-anime protagonist is absolutely genius!!! So true!! And now that I see it I can't make unseen! It also explains so well why Hollywood has such a big problem of integrating her into modernity -- they use the completely wrong lens and archetype for her. But then again, modern Hollywood only knows one archetype for female protagonist anymore and that is 'strong, independent, who don't need no man'... If they were to broaden the spectrum, maybe we would get better adaptations... or movies in general...
Describing Snow White as a Shojo protagonist really reflects the only way this sort of Snow White could be iterated on huh: make her a magical girl. Make the 7 dwarves her mascot buddies that she has to hide in day to day like that help give her magical powers. It also give the benefit of being able to simultaneously focus on her growing relationship with the dwarves and with the people around her. Wow
This video rules. Just finished my rewatch after seeing it on Patreon, and I’m glad a video like this exists, especially in the middle of the current conversation around whatever the remake’s gonna be. Kudos for highlighting the story structure via the stage adaptations! Snow White’s my favorite classic disney movie warts and all, and it sucks that so many are willing to circumvent what the original movie actually is to pin whatever changes are coming to Rachel Zegler (I made a video on the old film ages ago and even it gets an odd rant in the comments now and then). Excellent work!!
I remember this skit video about a guy trying to ask another guy his thoughts in TLM casting controversy and he just kept responding "it's a Disney Live Action remake". Culture war has distracted us from the real issue.
A "Disney/fairy tale romance" has become a powerful cultural idea, but I appreciate the perspective on the prince here. I like the brief screentime he and Snow White share, but you're right, it's not the main focus of the story or meant to be aspirational. There's a similar dynamic in the other two classic princess movies too, with more time devoted to the heroine and her friends and how they help her reach a happy ending (which includes a prince). A thoughtful survey of the story's evolution and themes - thank you for posting!
I always find something inherently amusing about judging an almost 90 year old movie based on an over 200 year old fairytale through the eyes of today. Sure, there's nothing wrong with it, you can do it, knock yourself out. But I still just find it funny. It's like opening a time capsule and lamenting that the can of soda inside has gone flat. I mean this movie came out BEFORE World War II began. Let that sink in.
They should just give us a Muppet version already instead of a 2 hour version of a 90 Minute movie. Also you guys didn't see the worst considering you didn't have to see the German "comedy" movies about the seven dwarfs.
I have returned for a rewatch and 6:05 is some of the most DATED shit I've heard- _minor ecological damage is a good way to rid of this personal annoyance_
When I was 13 I said to my dad that I didn't liked Snow White, then he said "never say that again, you and your twin made me and your mom watch Snow White every day, more than 5 times a day for two years straight!" (Snow White was our first VHS tape and we received from our mom when we're two years old and became obsessed until 4 years old, but I didn't remembered that part 😂) then he made us rewatch it and it was better than I remembered 😊
Lovely video and lovely take! I agree Snow White is very much of its time as far as structure goes. I think “Snow White and the 7 Dwarves” is a great example of musical structures of the 30s. And “Beauty and the Beast” is a great example of modern musical structures. It was the Great Depression, and people wanted fun song and dances. A good chunk of musicals/broadway shows at the time didn’t have a plot or were about putting on a show (I.e. “42nd Street” or later “White Christmas”). Modern musicals have a plot that is very much furthered by the songs and dances.
What *I* don't get is why so many people get SO worked up over movies they haven't even SEEN yet. We don't _know_ WHAT the focus of the movie is yet. I think everyone needs to stop judging until they SEE it. Look, when Cinderella was the first of the Princesses to get the live-action remake, I groaned out loud. It wasn't necessary; the animated film is beautifully and flawlessly done, to the point that the stepsisters tearing up her dress STILL chokes me up. Plus, we'd had umpteen live-action films of this story anyway, from the underappreciated "The Slipper and the Rose" (which really is more about the prince, tbh, but it's a fun and funny musical that the Sherman brothers penned) to the _possibly_ overrated one with Brandy taking on the Rodgers & Hammerstein version to still my fave version, "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore. So the only thing that the Lily James version could do for me is get the dress the right color, which they failed to do. (Also, Lady Tremaine's wardrobe was TERRIBLE and completely off the theme since the rest of the costumes were vaguely late 1800s, and hers were VERY 1940s. And don't get me started on the neon color palettes for the stepsisters.) So, no, I didn't pay money to see this film, but I wouldn't have no matter how good the aesthetics and marketing were. I already Cinderella's story backwards and forwards, I've seen just about every version of it, there was nothing new here to tempt me to the theater. (I did eventually see it on TV, and it was ok.) HOWEVER, it did well with fans and critics alike, and now that version of Cinderella's dress is more iconic than any other. So, I'm not going to hate on Snow White before I see it. Am I going to go to the theater for it? Probably not. But what is the point of stirring up a lot of hate about something before we get a chance to ACTUALLY see what that something actually IS?
I haven't read it yet, but I know there's also a comic book adaptation by Dark Horse that I heard expanded on Snow White's personality. There's also a hardcover that I'm mentioning because it collects some cool Romano Scarpa comics, however Snow White herself plays such a minor role in each of those stories that you can just pretend I didn't mention it.
Can I say, as a Snow White enjoyer, THANK YOU for this. Literally, no one gave a fuck about Snow White before this remake. Which is weird, right? That movie made the Disney Company the juggernaut it is today. But I digress. Rachel Zegler does not deserve the heat for the PR nightmare that is how Disney markets their modern princess with pop feminism. like this whole controversy is basically racists looking for an excuse to hate on a woman of colour. Focus your hate on the Disney cooperation instead. I can't stand the outrage merchants white knighting for a movie I genuinely like.
It's not just racism. For some like my autistic self, it breaks a core premise of her character: skin as white as snow. There's so much room for diverse representation in Disney franchises, but this is one that was pretty darn specific.
@@NeighborhoodOfBlue Stop blaming it on your autism. I'm autistic too, and she IS white. Skin that is literally white as snow is diseased. I'm pretty pale and so is my sister (we're Northern European), and honestly, it isn't the most beautiful skin type. Really. I prefer a Snow White that looks healthy.
Correct if I got this wrong. So Disney is doing a live adaptation of a movie starring a teenage girl, who's original movie didn't really have stakes except for the climax, but explored a charming magical world and was fun and for some reason this world gets replaced with a run of the mill choosen one narrative? Yes. Well nothing can go wrong there, it for sure will be a timeless classic like Time Burtons Alice in Underland, and be beloved by newcomers and nostalgic fans of the original alike. Please somebody tell Disney (and Hollywood for that matter), that "You are the choosen one..." is not nearly as empowering of a message, as they want it to be. It in fact isn't empowering at all, since it takes agency from the protagonist, and marginalizes everybody who doesn't have some Prophecy, Scroll, Inherited Duty, Magical Bloodline, or what not.... When it was revealed that Rey's parents were nobodies in the new Star Wars, I really had my hopes up, that this message had gottan across. But that didn't stick now, did it.
Here's something hilarious. I've reached a point in life that I don't care what society or people think anymore. I only have a few years left and all I care about is what makes me happy. I shut the door and simply don't care.
I'm so tired of the racial discourse focused at Disney. I'm also tired of their stances being borderline empty. Why aren't they telling us stories actually about Africa instead of Hamlet with lions? Why aren't they doing a story about Inuits? They've got a fascinating oral history! Why aren't they telling us an ancient story about Aboriginal peoples? Nope. They're just taking something historically Caucasian and changing races for no reason then calling any detractors racist. I hate it. It's stupid. Everyone playing along is stupid. All of this is bad faith. Every. Single. Bit. You wanna give American minorities a voice? Then tell their stories! Don't take a Danish rail and make the character black with red hair. I'm going to be called an -ist simply for that last sentence. But I'd rather Disney sticking to making kids stuff for kids and adults, teaching them about cultures outside America. America isn't the center of the universe, neither are white people or English, yet what they're doing seems to be focused on those things in one way or another. Jennifer Connelly was my Disney princess. Rocketeer for the win. But in the animated world, it would have been Mulan. It was a great story with interesting characters where people learned lessons. It showed real strength in diversity without it being a Benetton ad. We're all too focused on the color of skin and that's troubling after all these years... I dunno, I just don't think people are thinking anymore. People are stuck on the literal first plane of thought and basing everything else in a very simple way on that. It's shallow diversity. Y'all know Aboriginal people are treated like second class citizens in Australia, right? Does nobody actually care? What about Uyghurs in China? Anyone care about that? But you're right, black mermaid and brown snow is way more important for everyone...
I've been a sub for a while but if you START a video with a genuine backing of someone overhated for bad reasons and go "You are all weak, I am betrer than you-" that's a GREAT way to instantly get my respect and attention, you've got BITE.
Great video! Found myself nodding a lot to it and enjoying your analysis on Snow White's character and inner strength, while also being able to critique the film's low points. All while pointing out how ridiculous people on the internet got about the live action remake and decided to use it as a platform to start another hate campaign on a woman of color being cast as the lead.
yes, but there's a big distinction between japanese people saying a japanese word, and an english speaker saying it while speaking english because they want to come off like a cute anime character
I appreciate this video, as another woman with grandma taste who was often compared to snow white as a young child :P So much so that I dressed up as her for halloween years before actually seeing the movie lol
Snow white is a product of its time and that is okay. Let Disney move on and create new intellectual property and princesses to reflect our current times. For example; Princess Tiana, Merida, Moana etc. The obsession with overcorrecting the past (due to the public's scrutiny over the years) with soulless live action remakes is the wrong move.
okay I'm loving the (sort of) anti-capitalist interpretation on this movie; it really would make a much more interesting remake to have a young woman finding her community than to see her become the rightful queen or whatever
Its impossible for todays standards to have a heroine who isnt either a girl boss, bossing people around as she sees fit with them obaying because she's a girl, or a weapon-wielding gun-slinging warrior queen. Traits like trust in others and kindness are things that todays cynicism has largely put aside because they are labeled as weakness and naiv. I just wished that these remakes would focus more around what made these princesses characters to begin with, and not some convenient interpretation through modern glasses. There is reason these old movies are called "classics": "classic" stands synonimous with "timeless".
i'm posting this before the trailer comes out with 99% confidence that it won't contradict anything in this video ✌
also to be clear, which i apologize if i wasn’t - the “senpai” joke is directed at english-speaking people peppering it into english conversation to sound cute. not its native use in japanese. sorry again for not being specific.
wait? what!
halp!
There are lots of feminine Disney Princesses. I think ppl just find her boring lol
I'd argue Aurora isn't even the main character of her movie. I mean, yes, the title is about her, but nobody uses that excuse for Coco
which is kind of funny with the remakes specifically beauty and the beast and after is taking those as actual criticisms and use them as justifications of their own existence while in the process forgetting the original intent like beauty and the beast is the best example as it tries to explain plot holes that don't really serve much in the grand scheme of things like "why do the townsfolk not know of the castle? oh amnesia", "what happened to belle's mum? she dead" "does every object in the castle have a human counterpart? no lol"
@@ceasarsaran8573 Genuinely what the fuck are you talking about? I said "people don't actually remember these movies" and you come back with this?
Sry, I've wathec both movies before the "modern vomit" and 100% disagree with you
I don’t know how relevant this is, but I watched a beautiful Spanish film adaptation of Snow White called Blancanieves from 2013.
OMG Thank you for mentioning this!
Snow white is a shojo protagonist is the best take about the movie. And in a way the evil queen is the typical magical girl villian😮
Snow white is Sailor Moon its canon now
No way dude, now I want a snow white anime
I do feel a lot friendlier towards Snow White if I think of it as an extremely condensed version of Fruits Basket
It being Love's FIRST kiss makes so much more sense omfg
Snow White is one of the most important films in cinema and I would argue that animation film industry wouldn’t be what it is today without it
Shoutouts to the other 7 7D enjoyers.
Hell Yeah!!
Hearing the theme song in the vid just brought the stupidest grin of nostalgia to my face 🥹 I haven't heard that name in so long, but man was I obsessed with the show while it was airing
Update nobody asked for lol: rewatched a few episodes, and I'm happy to say it holds up! It's got good jokes/comedic timing and I laughed a lot more than I was expecting to 😊
YEAHHHHH GO 7D!
Hello fellow 7D enjoyer!
Here here lol 😂
The Zenigata theme during Mickey’s Detective School killed me
i knew what i had to do
That part made my morning lol
One for the freaks
@@infinitesnowproductions it pretty much showed them as "kid playing parent" which is cute.
Was it a continuation of the film, or it's own thing?
If Snow White is moe then is Grumpy tsundere-coded?
Oh ABSOLUTELY
Yes.
And the comparison of Snow White as a mahou shoujo protagonist is chef's kiss !
i used to watch snow white all the time as a child not for any reason in paticular (i really didnt remember half of it growing up) i think for the most part i used it as background noise as i drew and coloured but i think its a good story on found family that most modern audiences could be really drawn to these days. bob iger (my personal nemisis) made the decision to move away from "personal" stories and experiences and really shot disney in the foot with it. snow white could be made into a movie about the idea of making your own happiness during rough times with the people around you but it easier to slap a millenial buzzfeed girl boss story over the top of it. i like the idea of shoujo protaganist snow white and i think its possible to modernise an adaptation as long as you keep the real essence of the story and make it out of appreciation for its idea and stature as a classic and pioneer in animations not in spite of it
Oh my god, CCS is one of my favorite anime and Snow White was always my favorite Disney princess... It's all coming together...
I was so afraid of watching this video, but not even 5 minutes in and I'm already cheering. The Jimmy McGills just make it so much better
First: you gave me such nostaligia showing those dwarf toys where you use water to make their faces/accessories change I wanted those so bad as a kid lol
Second: I did not expect to tear up at the end with the little chosen family speech, thank you.
An Infinite Snow Production video? This is a good day. I don’t care that it’s not Lupin III
I love the chapter titles, clearly a fan of Kingdom Hearts.
THE 7D MENTIONED ‼️⁉️
(The racism left aside because that's a whole nother can of worms...)
It makes zero sense to me that so many people are jumping on a hate train over a movie that 1) hasn't even come out yet, and 2) doesn't even mean anything to them personally!?
So thank you for your take on it because while I'm not a defender of this movie, I am tired of people complaining, who wouldn't even like the original. I like it. Sure, some things are kinda weird or even highly problematic to our modern sensibilities but Disney's version of Snow White shaped me more than few other things have. So if I'm having issues with the remake, I feel like that's valid but I personally didn't get vocal about the Lion King remake because I have only seen the original movie in full... Maybe twice?
Infinite Snow Productions making another home run again, good job!
Your channel has always been criminally underrated and under...viewed(?) for your production quality and charm, and never have I met someone that has so perfectly and succinctly complimented my feelings on Lupin, Tim Burton, and others until I came across your channel. Ok but “SHEIN Mark Hamill” is gold
I personally expectet the actress to have albinism
I know the mom pleaded for a daughter with "skin withe as snow, hair black as ebony" but I tought it would be an interesting take on the name
@cherryflawa4868 I always thought white as snow meant unnatural because I'm pretty pale but I'm not snow pale, albinism with dark hair would be interesting (since the real condition affects all melanin) but definitely makes more sense to me than white as snow = any white girl
since Snow White is a tale from Germany.. the actress for Snow White should have been European. or maybe even German.
Uhm
1 the fairy tale might have a german one but that does mean it was set in Germany
2 this is based disney's version of snow white and disney fairy tales always differ wildly from source material
Your videos are always a pleasant surprise!
A new infinite snow productions upload makes today a good day
Dude you're gonna blow up. This video is way too good this few views.
I watched this movie so much as a kid cuz I had a vhs. The bonus features are probably what sparked my fascination with animation history.
Very glad to see you again, I'm sure this will be great
Your writing, narration, and overall production quality is extremely good
Not the video I expected after 11 months but I'm not complaining, I liked this.
2:38 I shall not tolerate this Miku slander 😡😂 but in all seriousness great video!
REAL
For me, I don't want the remake because I like the old one as it is: it was revolutionary, artistic, and comforting. It's like a big bowl of soup or rice pudding or something, just comfort food. But, remaking it doesn't eliminate the original, I just wish the remakes actually appreciated the originals and were more to pay tribute than to try to pander to modern audiences.
It’s definitely one of those films that has been so influential to the medium of film that people nowadays have pretty much taken it for granted.
The shot of Grumpy breaking down still destroys me and always will.
Wow
Omg i also get told I look like Snow White all the time and I’m also obsessed with the movie lol
The castle of cagliostro clips already tell me you have great taste in music
This video rules. Just finished my rewatch after seeing it on Patreon, and I’m glad a video like this exists, especially in the middle of the current conversation around whatever the remake’s gonna be. Kudos for highlighting the story structure via the stage adaptations! Snow White’s my favorite classic disney movie warts and all, and it sucks that so many are willing to circumvent what the original movie actually is to pin whatever changes are coming to Rachel Zegler (I made a video on the old film ages ago and even it gets an odd rant in the comments now and then). Excellent work!!
Why haven't they done a live action Black Cauldron? THAT would be money!
I remember this skit video about a guy trying to ask another guy his thoughts in TLM casting controversy and he just kept responding "it's a Disney Live Action remake". Culture war has distracted us from the real issue.
no that's so real its literally a Disney live action remake who gives a shit
Thank you for adressing us the 7D enjoyer that cartoon is actually good ngl
I'm happy to see a new video of yours on my feed, I hope you are ok!
They should just give us a Muppet version already instead of a 2 hour version of a 90 Minute movie.
Also you guys didn't see the worst considering you didn't have to see the German "comedy" movies about the seven dwarfs.
I have returned for a rewatch and 6:05 is some of the most DATED shit I've heard-
_minor ecological damage is a good way to rid of this personal annoyance_
She has returned!!!
Another Infinite Snow banger, 10/10, no notes
@@NeighborhoodOfBlue
Stop blaming it on your autism. I'm autistic too, and she IS white. Skin that is literally white as snow is diseased. I'm pretty pale and so is my sister (we're Northern European), and honestly, it isn't the most beautiful skin type. Really. I prefer a Snow White that looks healthy.
I feel like you really put a new perspective on the movie for me and others. Excellent video.
I was ok with Rachel being Snow White, but I'm so tired of empty girl boss promises. When will someone deliver something other than cringe?
Amazing video as always!
Thank you for making this video! 💚💚
💐💐💐
Snow White from Once upon a Time was an awesome 😊
Here's something hilarious. I've reached a point in life that I don't care what society or people think anymore. I only have a few years left and all I care about is what makes me happy. I shut the door and simply don't care.
Had an absolutely miserable day at work, looking forward to this SO MUCH
I'm so tired of the racial discourse focused at Disney.
Can I just say it's so cathartic to hear someone who also sees this "controversy" for what it is. Which is riduculous
Came across this video out of nowhere and I love it you give me Lindsay ellis vibes in the best way possible
New suscriber ^_^
14:28 I mean, Senpai is an actual Japanese term, It's not something Anime invented.
yes, but there's a big distinction between japanese people saying a japanese word, and an english speaker saying it while speaking english because they want to come off like a cute anime character
Love this channel
I'm gonna be honest I never connected the channel name with Snow White I thought that it was referencing TV static... 😅
Good video!
You named the chapters after Kingdom Hearts game titles.
NICE!!!
1:09 Yeah thats her main problem. Being forced by Disney to say the original movie was "Weird weird weird!" I am sure thats exactly what happened.
I cant tell if you are being sarcastic or not hahaha
Are you planning any more lupin the 3rd videos?
yeessssss :0 gimme more video essays
Oh yeah, 7D did exist
We are so back
