The Oxford Master's Degree that nobody talks about

  • I’ve recently got accepted into the University of Oxford for the MSc Software Engineering degree and have done some research and googling about the degree. I found out there aren't not a lot of people sharing their feedback on how the course was like. I also tried to find reviews and feedback from the current students alumni but there isn't much luck at all. Especially websites like Reddits and thestudentroom - Majority of the comments and links are either more than 5 years old or questions that have actually never been answered by anyone else.
Therefore, in this video I would like to break down my initial experience after I got accepted into the Uni , how the subjects are like in the master and possibly this is the first video in UA-cam that talks about this degree. Hopefully through this video I will be able to help some of you who want to join this degree in the future.

According to the official website, the entry requirements required a strong first class or a strong upper second class that related to computer science or informatics engineering. I got a First from the undergraduate degree as a software engineer, so this is not an issue for me and It is also worth to mention that is a professional master degree other than research based master degree so this is much more beneficial for people like myself who has worked over the past 8 years like a donkey in the cloud engineering environment. Other than that, it also required a proficiency in English at a higher level as this is a postgraduate degree.
    Differences
Upon applying to this master degree, there are some differences between this MSc compared to other universities, other than this is a professional master degree, the obvious one will be this is only available in Part time, frankly, it works out the best for me, because I work full time. We are not required to attend a full semester that typically lasts for 3 months but rather we attend an intense week long for a subject in person and then followed up by a 6 weeks assignment to submit after the study week.
Another thing I liked about this master is that we would already have the full calendar for the subjects that will be available in the academic year, so as a part time student who works full time I will be able to plan this in advance to get leave to do the study week in Oxford. There are currently more than 35 subjects to choose from.
In total, We basically just need to repeat that process for 10 times plus one dissertation to graduate from the master degree. We do have a timeline for this , that is minimum 2 years or 4 years maximum to finish this degree.
It is also worth mentioning that this MSc also offers an alternative pathway where the MSc students can be graduated as MSc software and system security given if they took the specific security modules which I will talk about in the next videos and also will deep dive some of the subjects that I will take in this coming September.
Other than that, there is not much difference and the grading is pretty standard compared to other universities in which each candidate is potentially to get distinction, merit and pass upon graduation from the master. The official website also has lots of information about how to achieve each one of the grading, if anyone is interested to have a look, I have included the link down below.
This master has an average of 160 people who has applied year to year and it only has about 50% of the applicant get offered by the University of Oxford and it usually about 95% of acceptance as well.
    Cost,
The cost of this master is about £35k pounds. Tt costs about £10k pounds for 4 years of university registration for Home student, it would be more for international, and if you managed to finish in two years, then it would be half of the money I presumed, plus - we have 10 total subjects for the master , so each of the subjects will be about £2.5k pounds with that it would be ended as £35k ish just for the course.
I have also made a Discord channel where I think we could potentially grow a community for those who are interested to join this MSc and hopefully be able to get some alumni to share their experience during their time in Oxford and how impacting the MSc after they graduated.

Will be starting the MSc Software and Systems Security this year and will be in Kellogg as well. Maybe we run into each other during the Matriculation :)
Anyway, yeah, I was dealing with the same thing. Not really any information available. I had the advantage of knowing 2 colleagues that did the same MSc in the past but even they were always a bit cryptic. Always referred to it as, yeah it's tough but rewarding. However, I can't wait for it to start this year.

I don't understand, is it part time but still you need to attend from 9-5 ? I am full-time employee and wanted a part-time MSc on the side even if it's challenging as long it's doable along a full-time employment

@somestarsoul This is a professional course, although GRE marks can be provided I don’t think it is mandatory. The selectors are looking at how the candidate can grow from the course in their respective professions. Application process is on their website.

Thanks for sharing the information. But I don't know why as a part-time program, nearly all the courses are required to take 9-5 on weekdays. So did you use your paid holiday to take the courses? If it is true then I know why this program takes an average three years to finish...

Hello Jackie, apology for the late reply, this is correct, average 3 modules per year, but I did 9 this year...
