Sort things hierarchically. If both the sun set and the lion are kind of orange and nothing else is, you have three piles, lion, sun set and either. The lion pile you can sort into head, tail, body and either. The lion head pile you can sort into mane, eyes, mouth, nose and either and so forth. Instead of solving a 33600 piece puzzle, you're solving a bunch of 1000 piece puzzles (e.g. the lion), instead of solving 1000 piece puzzles you're solving lots of 150 piece puzzles (e.g. the head of the lion) and so on. This turns it into an ~O(nlogn) complexity rather than a O(n^2) complexity. A 33600 piece puzzle that's just a mess, like a jackson pollock painting, would be a nightmare. Puzzles are weird. Someone prints a big picture, then cuts it into pieces, and then people pay for those pieces just to spend 400h putting them back together.
+TurtleIsSlow2469 Hard to judge price of entertainment. If he worked on it even 3 days a week for 5 hours over 9 months that's almost 600 hours of entertainment. More than 1 hour per dollar is pretty good. Video games can offer much more, movie theater movies much less.
He did it in the unusual way.
