No, it's really not. It got placed on some list ages ago and then it's been rubber stamped in perpetuity. There's literally not one funny moment in this clip.
One of the funniest lines was left out. When Ted oversees what he perceives are very few mourners at the memorial he says "If this was my funeral it would be packed". And Murray turns to him and says "That's right Ted. It's just a matter of giving the public what they want".
Anyone who cannot see the comedic and acting talent of MTM in these scenes had to have been living under a rock. One of the greatest talents ever to grace TV.
I wasn't a dedicated watcher and missed it until it hit syndication by which time it had become immortal. I would place it as the best of the series which says a lot considering how many good ones there were. Right up there with Lucy's "Vita-meata-vegamin" episode.
Carol Burnett as Scarlett O'Hara with the curtain rod still in the dress. On Frasier when the cherries jubilee exploded off camera and Roz comes through the Swinging Doors hair all frazzled. On another frasier, Martin and Daphne are walking down the sidewalk when Martin's old recliner chair falls on the sidewalk in front of them on fire. But Mary's switch from being the scold to laughing out loud to crying was brilliant. It was all acting and no tricks.
Definitely one of the greatest episodes in TV history. I remember growing up watching the series as a kid and it’s still a great series to enjoy all these years later.
I loved these actors! I grew up with them in my living room. Them, Carol Burnett, Tim Conway Harvey Korman, Viki Lawrence. Oh my goodness, Betty White! That woman was terribly funny. These people were treasure back then. God bless all of them! Many are gone, but a few are here.
When I was a kid and hurt myself, my dad would say, "Did you fall down and hurt your foo foo?" He loved MTM. He was the funniest man I ever knew. RIP, Dad.
I agree with you. This really shows the different ways in which people (naturally) handle death and grief. I think it's a good teaching tool. Just like the episode from All in the Family where Edith is almost raped is so good a teaching tool it's still used by rape counselors to this very day.
Honestly, it was so funny the night it first aired, I said right then it deserved an Emmy. Mary's acting is , of course brilliant. But my goodness! How hard was it for the entire cast to sit straight-faced through that funeral scene? And with a live audience laughing, to boot? 😂😂 Priceless!
IIRC, TV Guide named this episode the greatest in TV comedy history. I can't disagree. More than that, though, I miss the utter class of Mary Tyler Moore. What an astonishingly beautiful person.

This was one of my dad's favorite episodes in all of television. When he died, we were sitting in church at his funeral, and we, his daughters, suddenly thought of Chuckles' funeral, and we all started laughing. Poppi would have been proud.
This main point is so true... that your emotions don't always do what you want them too. Sometimes it's due to exhaustion, sometimes not, but its not hard to be unexpectedly overwhelmed. This was a great theme for the humor of the show.
And not all laughter is caused by experiencing something funny. Nervousness can cause laughter as a response. I know someone who had to leave a wake because of nervous laughter. It’s also true that anything that is even mildly amusing can become hilarious in a situation where you are not supposed to laugh, such as in a church or at a funeral.
Chuckles Bites The Dust was so damn good! I rank it up there in the top 10 best MTM shows, along with the one where Murray as producer picks up Sue Ann and plops her on top of that giant wedding cake! You just don’t get laughs like that anymore.
Mary Tyler Moore allowed everyone else to get the laughs on most shows. But she showed us how how good she was at comedy. She's got spunk even if Lou hates spunk.

@@ernestkovach3305 All the major cast is dead. Murray's wife, who appeared in very few episodes is still alive -- Joyce Bulifant. I would suggest next time you disagree you provide the correct answer.
@TheHarryleemartin You just admitted you are wrong. Also, Phyllis 's daughter was a member several times . As for the other full or part-time actors on that show, hire look alike replacements or actual relatives as fillers for Mary, Lou, Ted, Murray, etc. Come on, folks, let's make this happen ..... use technology now available to harvest the real sentences from the many past MTM and Dick Van Dyke shows to create or piece together new dialog. Nothing is impossible. You can get this done through AI Hollywood. Produce an authentic reunion show that can be so much more than " A weekend at Bernies" type show of propped up lifeless bodies ! Use long and medium long shots instead of close ups, apply extra makeup , etc. This is doable . Pay relatives of those cast members now deceased who are agreeable to legal exhumation of their bodies to add authenticity when the credits roll. You want Mary Tyler Moore? The REAL Mary? Done! Probably the single funniest episode in television history. This episode ran short in rehearsal. The audience laughter filled in the time.
