me too!!! the stages, furniture, dress…unbelievably beautiful & quirky!! Each actor/actress superbly picked! I couldnt imagine the time that went into each scene. Beloved Classic.
When they first meet and she tucks him into bed is very symbolic. I just love it. She places the wrap off her back and wants to do more and grabs her expensive fur to complete his safety and comfort. Absolutely love it
I know every frame and every line of Auntie Mame. From "Well, when you're from Pittsburgh you have to do something" to "There's no sugar in a Claude Upson Daiquiri" to "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death" to the very last word Mame says as she mounts with stairs with Michael…"beautiful."
This has always been my favorite movie. I read Ros Russel's biography many years ago. She wrote that her sister was just like this character so she had no problem creating her.
This movie has a rejuvenating quality for the mind and spirit. It brings laughter and joy to one's soul. Thank you great creator (God) for Rosalind Russell
Best movie ever, I’ve watched it so many times, my friends make quotes from the movie all the time for years. If any of us has a spare bedroom, it’s always called Vera’s passing out suite 😂
“If I kept my hair natural like yours I’d be bald.” And “why’d I ever get him those damned long pants?” Are the ones that come to mind. And of course “ Mr Babcock, knowledge is power.””life is a banquet and most poor bastards are starving to death.” There are so many more.
This is my favorite movie. They don’t make movies like this anymore. I notice something new every time I watch it. Many quotable lines. “Knowledge is power” “ life’s a banquet and most poor bastards are starving.” “ Christmas isn’t till Tuesday. Well we need it now.” I see as a love story. Auntie Mame and Patrick love each other. They want what’s best for the each other. Even if they don’t know what best for themselves. I wish I could see this movie in a theater like it was made to be seen. When I meet someone and we start talking about movies, what’s your favorite movie, this is mine. If they have never seen it I tell them that I’m jealous of them. They look at me with a puzzled look on their face. They want to know why? I tell them they get to see it for the first time, and I wish I could see it again for the first time.
The movie is called AUNTIE MAME based on the book and was also a Broadway show. Its a wonderful film. Thanks for posting. Rosalind Russell is a true Hollywood Goddess from the Golden Era of film making.
This is the best version of that movie however the musical of this movie was a flop which starred Lucille Ball and Beatrice Arthur. Personally I enjoyed it but make no mistake, this version without a doubt, is the best 💯 Rosalind Russell was one of Hollywood's greatest actresses of the Golden Age ...
@@doncox7805yes this wa stage beta version. Lucy was terrible as mame and Bea was ok but Rosalind was best. The movie is wonderful. What is not know. Widely is that the musical is based on a book called travels with my aunt. Mame is the definition of high camp.

It’s Pittsburgh with an h. There are at least half a dozen undistinguished Pittsburgs, including one in Mississippi, but the one being referred to here is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the 1930s Pittsburgh was called “hell with the lid off,” but by the 1980s it had become and remains one of the most livable (and loved) cities in the United States.
Watching old films I find very relaxing and I learn about how things were etc. just like reading a history book. This film made in 1958 just before I was born seems to personify post WWII American glamour; people would go to the cinema to get a glimpse into this world. My late parents were about 30 then and had just suffered here in the UK a decade of rationing food (one egg a week) and my father had been called up for national service and let down again and again. I felt it was older than 1958 before I looked it up. Perhaps I am just getting very old myself.
I have Always LOVED this movie and still do. The Women ( 1939 ) and Auntie MAME- are My Rosalind Russell Best-Pick among Her Outstanding Array of movie roles. And what a Collection. My Only disappointment. The First minutes - the intro and Patrick having breakfast...Not to Worry a small-very small detail, compared to the worlds problems. Thank You for bringing Love and Laughter to mark the beginning of 2025 ;-)
I love well-done period movies, and the plunge from the ‘Roaring-Twenties’ into the ‘Dirty-Thirties’ was such a traumatic time for Many; I love witnessing the changes in this Protagonists - as she changes with Life-circumstances, it’s a very sweet story!
I can't believe Rosalind Russell didn't win the Oscar for best actress in 1959. She was phenomenal and nominated along with Deborah Kerr, Shirley MacLaine and Elizabeth Taylor but lost to Susan Hayward in "I Want to Live".
I guess, the film was very much ahead of its time. That's why. It's a brilliant movie and highly underestimated. Rosalind Russell is Auntie Mame in perfection.
Thank you so much for posting and like others in the comments delighted and grateful to cross paths to view. It brought back memories of watching with my inspiring Mother as a small child aroud 7 "What have you got back there? Reindeer?' Took me right back as found that line especially hilarious when wee. The rest i don't remember so was like watching for the first time as an adult fully appreciating this fabulous film.
If they showed the real title and credits, the movie would be pulled for copyright issues. It’s one of my favorites. Rosalind Russell is wonderful and Peggy Cass as Agnes Gooch is a highlight.
The near closure evocative: "Rattlesnake anyone?" is so totemic and telling. I first experienced this movie as a child at the behest of my father and fell in love with it. I find it entrancing and was mesmerised from the outset when Russell, in beautiful pastel tones, glides at-pace down the stairs with a cape trailing behind her and wielding an enlengthened cigarette holder like a social stave or wand, the very investiture of elegance and consummate style. The bohemian lead is a card. Ball never comes close in her representation of Mame. The dialogue, screenplay, storyboarding, characterisation, character progressions, pacing, cinematography, editing, visual design, ornamentation, costumes, hair, makeup, sets, choreography, acting, direction, story arc, plot, narrative structure, score, lyricism, emotional impact, social critique, class critique: It truly is a class act and premier piece of cinema. I have watched it over 15 times and never tire of it.
