  • Another Abandoned Exxon - Breezewood, PA. Located just walking distance from the other Exxon gas station sits another one closed. Whether or not the note on the door was true about the place being closed for improvements, things don't necessarily look like they are being done to improve the store.

We got gas here in June 2001. One of my cousins found a rock that's shaped like a baby skull in the Best Western parking lot. That summer is truly forgotten now.

It's so weird to see this, because whenever I me and my family would travel to Maryland, we would stop through Breezewood first and go to this very gas station and every once in a while, go to the Taco Bell. Seeing this gas station being abandoned now or closed is just weird for me to see.

Fun fact for you that hotel caught fire back in February 2019. I forget the name but that's why its fenced off. A holiday inn is going to be built there as soon as construction can resume.

The branding on the station is Exxon/Esso; the white-on-red Convenience Store sign is a dead giveaway.
"Out of Service - Line Break" means there's no power to the interface box in the back room -(Gilbarco Pump tech for 10 years)

It turns out the hotel you mentioned caught fire and after that they called quits and closed. I'm pretty sure it was a econo lodge and it burned in Jan or Feb 2019

I live near a citco and it closed about 4 months ago and then it was abandoned and I thought, hey wallieb26 you will like this, until it opened again and it was an Exxon then because I saw papers that were printed "Exxon" & ripped off the citco sign and painted Exxon on it, now I have three Exxons!

As you may know, the gap in the Turnpike exists because Breezewood has flatly refused to have the gap filled in, so traffic is forced to use US-30. The abandoned section did bypass the area.

I've always liked Texaco but now we don't have any for past few years plus I also like Shell which I could tell the difference for some reason but now we don't have Shell as well & my other I like which we have is Phillips 66 (Phillips/Conoco).

Some more context on the Exxons:
The Exxon shown in this video closed around 2012. The other Exxon was open until around 2018/2019, which was around the time that Gateway became an Exxon itself.

If they finally get around to making a proper connection between I-70 and the PA Turnpike, then there might be a lot more abandoned services in Breezewood. Supposedly keeping the travelers' services in operation is the "reason" a proper Interstate-to-Interstate connection does not occur in Breezewood.

    • @MontgomeryMall
      @MontgomeryMall 3 роки тому

No direct connection of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 70 is ever likely to occur. The project would have to be first proposed by the local entity to get into statewide plans. Considering that traveler activity at Breezewood is a major source of tax revenue for mostly impoverished Bedord County -- it would be improbable they would move to divert those travelers away via a direct connection,

I used to drive through breezewood going to and from college in the raised middle finger that is northern West Virginia, way back in the late 1980s. Back then there was a really seedy place outside of the main town, along a service road off to the right along the southbound I70 spur maybe a mile from where 70 hits the main drag. I think it was a strip club. We used to joke that it was, at least. It might have just been a windowless dive bar.
I wonder if it's still standing. I doubt it is still open if it is.

Back in the early 1970s there eas a Mobil station across Rt.30 from the intersection of I70 in Breezewood.
It was a major drug distribution center in the area because of the confluence of Rt 30, I70 and the Pa Turnpike.
I don't remember what year it happened but there was a major drug bust at that Mobil station that was supposedly the largest drug bust in that part of Pennsylvania up to that time. Lots of trash got arrested and convicted.

Wallie, funny thing (besides the fact Exxon still has a station next door to the abandoned one) is that this station still has the same format (pumps and everything) our local Esso stations in Puerto Rico used to have when they sold their stations here in 2006.
Esso came to the Island as Standard Oil of Indiana in 1895 (PR was still a Spanish colony then) to sell KEROSENE in the Old Port of San Juan (today La Puntilla in the Old City) and were "KICKED OUT OF THE ISLAND" in 2006 as the Gov't of Puerto Rico couldn't pay U$1.05 Mln owned for the gas and stuff police cars and other Gov't vehicles consumed. Stations were sold to Total Petroleum, a French-owned oil company.
PS: In The States Esso was the brand mostly used for a while (replacing Standard) until the 1970's when they finally adopted the Exxon name there...

This Exxon I use to deliver coca cola to all these stores back in the late 90's when Breezewood was bustling as of now this building is gone and construction is being done on this property now as I drove by there yesterday, also the store across the street the "sacs" store is now closed as well as the flying J. Let me just say when I delivered coca cola in Breezewood back in the 90's all those places was open it was nothing for me to put off 800 cases of soda twice a week just in that little strip and now other than sheetz and gateway there really isn't nothing there... ps next time your in the area drive up past the old flying j and the building behind is what use to be the post house bus terminal it has been closed for years now but might be an interesting explore for you! That’s not uncommon especially in Alabama to have two stations that close together. Years ago my grandparents lived in Boaz Al it had two Texaco’s and two Amaco’s and both Amaco’s were within walking distance of each other. And in the next town over they have two BP’s and two She’ll stations that’s really not that uncommon from where I’m from.

That is quite something, all those abandoned places within such short distance of each other. Around here, the abandoned places are all scattered around.
Saw a couple comments about the fire in that hotel, and it reminded me of the old former Howard Johnson (hotel and restaurant) that was located in Albany, NY, just off of NYS Thruway Exit 23.
Happened back in July of '17. Place had long been vacant, at least ten years prior. The fire was the last straw for the place, though it took them like...a year, year and a half, before the place was finally demolished.
Now the property has been partially redeveloped. A Sonic drive-in opened there shortly before this virus mess started, a Sport Clips is planned to open in the future (would likely have opened by now, under normal circumstances), and a BIG new hotel is being built in the back.
That's one long abandoned place that no longer stands, but I know some others that still do, that I haven't mentioned yet to date. A grocery store (a video of it is on YT)...a car dealership who's showroom was repurposed as a thrift store, then closed...and abandoned Hess station...as well as one remaining abandoned Toys R Us (the other two have been converted into different stores).
Great video, as usual. Can't wait for the next one!
