@@Thesquirtlegamer I grew up with Gen 3 and somehow completely missed Gen 4. I remember not even really liking most of the Gen 4 Pokémon that I was aware of back then. I don't really like any of the starters. The only Gen 4 Pokémon that I _really_ love are Floatzel, Luxray, Staravia, Lucario, Weavile, Toxicroak, Chatot, Lopunny, Garchomp, Magnezone, the new Eevees, and some others. But there were a lot of Pokémon that I really didn't care for. Bastiodon, Roserade, Ambipom, Purugly, Skuntank, and others are _really_ boring. And I really didn't like Rhyperior, Magmortar, and Lickilicky as evolutions for preexisting Pokémon.
Gen 5 was the gen that made me feel that I wasn't playing a kid's game. when I was a kid, the philosophy of truth v/s ideals made me feel different things and when N talked bout "did Pokemon really liked fighting"? That was the first time I took the game seriously
when I was a kid I thought it was just fucking stupid because as a DS game, it was going to have no canonical impact so they were just delving into these concepts for seemingly no reason other than to arouse thought, thought that has no prevalence in the series going forward even a 10 year old me was disappointed in Pokemon's desire to make this entry
what annoys me the most is that gen 5 got such a ridiculous amount of undeserved hate it ended up flopping back when it was released but NOW it's actually quite beloved by the community bc everyone realized it really went downhill after gen 6, not 5....nice that you finally noticed but the damage is already done :I
It never flopped though. It was always loved to an extent. Nah it went downhill after the jump to the Switch but let's see how long it takes for people to figure that out. What damage? Gen 5's reputation didn't damage anything.
@@Jdudec367 They don't mean it went downhill statistically after gen 6. It went downhill during gen 6+ bcus of how little love and experimentational (that is officially a word lol) they got with their games. One thing I really dislike about the newer games/gens, is that they have a mix of all the pokemon from the previous generations, which becomes overwhelming for me. I love how in B&W it was an entirely new region, with new pokemon, and new pokemon ONLY for the majority of the game. It's exciting to pick out your team with new never-before-seen pokemon that you know almost nothing about. These newer games have very little of that, which I can understand, because 1: nostalgia, and 2: they can't create a whole new 100-200 new pokemon every generation.
@@davygravy5802 Eh....gen 7 still had love and experimentation though. I don't see how that's a bad thing at all. The new games still have that though, but they actually give you options and not just Pokémon that take too long to fully evolve.

Pokemon Black was my first ever pokemon game and I'm not exaggerating when I say gen 5 literally shaped my childhood. The characters, story, pokemon, music, philosophy, region, graphics, designs, I loved everything, still do. They did a lot of new things for the franchise in gen 5, which like you said, wasn't very well recieved. They never stopped doing new things though. 3D, fairy type and mega evolution were all new in gen 6, and despite how basically everything else in gen 6 is super forgettable, the game was still very well recieved. New stuff isn't necessarily bad, but it needs to be flashy and gimmicky to be well recieved. So what did they do for gen 7? Big flashy animations with Z moves, and pokemon from outer space (ultra beasts) with eccentric designs. People don't care for Z moves, but there was generally a lot of love for the ultra beasts. Conclusion: people love gimicks and flash, but only when it comes to pokemon design and appearance. So what do they do for Gen 8? Just make pokemon FRIKIN' HUGE WITH BIG FLASHY MOVES and see how the fans react. People are STILL not happy? Lets cut out flash and gimicks entirely. They want nostalgia? Lets go back in time! I don't think any of the pokemon games are bad, but I know they can be better, so I'm left a little dissapointed sometimes. What will make the games enjoyable is an immersive and visually pleasing world to explore, inspiring rivals, characters with depth, challenging and intriguing antagonists, lovable pokemon designs, both old and new, a well written story, customization and of course good soundtrack. It's not that pokemon games don't have any of those qualities, but too many pokemon games do not have enough of them. Games that sell and games that are enjoyable aren't always the same.
Pokemon Black was my first ever pokemon game and because of that game I am the one that im today. Pokemon BW 1/2, at least for me, have been always really underestimated but for me they are the best pokemon games especially the first ones. Pokemon Black and White 1 has an incredible story, i love every single part of the region, every single mistery and story. It even questions the liberty of the pokemons. I just love those games and I am here to defend them and try to explain why they are the best, even if they didn´t sell too much because, as you said, selling and quality is not always related.
Well let's see.. Gen 7 introduced regional forms which is probably the most underrated thing in pokemon, objectively had one of the best stories in pokemon, amazing characters like lillie, gladion, lusamine, all the trial leaders, kahuna hala etc, alola also was objectively the best looking region when it comes to detail, the mons design were fun, lusamine was a great villain, ultra beasts were a really great idea, fun mini games like mantine surf, fun customisation for your character and i can name so many more things gen7 did right. And i dont wanna hear no "gEn7 HaD sO mAnY cUtSceNeS" when they were like 2-3 minutes long. I admit the first 20 minutes definently were alot of talking but after the first island the games a great. Gen5 has like 3 good characters and all of a sudden they get called the best game ever😂
@@makekonohamarugreatagain3547 I was going to agree with you, but when I see you just wrote your appreciation for a game to trash another one, it’s not cool :/
Black and White was the peak imo. The gym leaders were tough and really required at more than average team to cover all weaknesses. I really felt like the nice challenge you get from a SMT game. Really had to use your brain on this game, and that a good part of the fun.
I've been playing White recently and Elesa's damn Volt Switch became a cakewalk with the help of Stealth Rock, never really felt the need to use hazards in pokemon games much until then
What i miss the most are the animated sprites. They were so expressive. The introduction of full 3D sprites really did a number on the games for a while. I think it's gotten better with time, now that we're at BDSP, but maybe it's just my nostalgia...
It has not gotten better with time. It's nostalgia. People have datamined these models and they're the same ones still used way back from XY (2013). There's only little touch ups on the polygons on some models, but otherwise virtually no difference to the eye of the average player. What you might be mistaking as better 3D sprites, is likely just a different lighting texture they're using.
BW and BW2 were just masterpieces, and it makes my soul at peace that it had to take the plague and mediocre gens to have people appreciate it way more.
@@alejandrop.s.3942 they went all in with the sequels: more old pokemon to catch in the wild, pokemon world tournament (goat addition), pokestar studios, tons of new areas (also many that are closed off) in the main game, new water type gym, different gym leaders, upgraded legendaries, black/white city, updated gyms, more tms and move tutor available, Heartbreaker Charles, and much much more. @@courtney1496 So, should I play directly BW2? I'm getting interested in gen 5, I play Emerald almost every day and often Platinum, and given what I see on videos, BW2 seem like really cool games , although learning about more Pokémon is tedious (I barely get 4th gen meta).
@@alejandrop.s.3942 gen 5 mechanics aren't too much of a leap from gen 4, and bw2 are considered "complete" games so I want to say start with them first but you'd feel lost with the storyline and recurring characters in it. Up to you though!
For Gen 5, bc it was so heavily story based, I think that's why they made the map linear. Gen 5 was a lot less adventure based than the previous generations, but it made up for that with a damn good af story. The linear progression supports the tight story-telling. Unlike modern pokemon games who have shitty "stories" and yet still drag the player along the route by the hand so there's also no adventure.
@@zlyexe1736 New York isn't a linear city. The city designs were based on New York, but the map progression is linear. These are two independent concepts.
@@Aelyshes story gen 7 is alright, but because that one is also heavily story based and also a later generation where map complexity was lost, it's even more linear than gen 5 and has a lot more hand holding
I get that some of the early BW mons are disliked, but every gen had this too. Nobody likes nothing but Pidgey, Rattata and the bugs at the start of gen 1. Gen 2 has hardly any team options that are viable, and gen 4 requires you to pretty much use the same handful every playthrough. Gen 3 was a field of tentacool and zigzagoon thru the region. Gen 5 is not a downgrade, it was gonna have more potentially disliked mons because it had the guts to make more new mons than the previous gens did.
Most of the new designs were forced and the other beginning characters had much better designs. Shinx and Starly for example are a billion times more appealing. Gen 3 had cool starters you actually want to use.
Yeah, I feel like people are forgetting some gems like lillipup and blitzle. What about purrloin? Hell, route 4 lets you get Scraggy, Darumaka and Sandile. How is that worse than Rattata, Spearow and Ekans?
Yeh gen 5 was aleays going to have the most disliked mon's by raw numbers as its almost double the size of most gen's bar gen 1. An intresting note is that a significant portion of the gen 5 dex is just gen 1 redesigns. sawk/throw are hitmon line. chandelure and conkledure are gastly and machop lines. Technically escaldrill is dugtrio line. garbodor is muk. I'll ignore the regional bird/rodent and bugs since every gen has those.
Black and White 2 was 3DS enhanced at launch though, and I even remember some boxes explicitly marked it as a 3DS game and were compatible with the 3d slider well. So I mean, they were at least leveraging the capabilities of the new system, so I feel Ike the aging sales didn’t have too much of an impact.
I don't think the DS's lifespan had anything to do with it. The "fans" of the series that hated these games with a passion because Gamefreak decided to do something bold, made their voices known, and now we have a series going down the pan because 'We hAvE To KeEp tHe GeN 1 lOvErS HaPpY oR eLsE." This is my view point anyway after playing Gens 6 and 7.
I mean... it's fair to mock or dislike Unova's Pokémon designs, but you also have to keep in mind the region is based off of New York and other 'physical' places. Therefore the Pokémon are so designed in a human-like manner as these are less of a fantasy monster, but rather existing objects, animals, et cetera which fit in with its theme.
Most of the complaints of gen 5's new Pokemon are honestly hilarious when you think back to gen 1. People mock garbodor and ignore Grimer being the original garbage Pokemon. People hated the ice cream cone but not the carton of eggs
@@TinNguyen-rl2xr it's less so the sprite of the Pokemon and moreso the idea behind it. Pokemon haven't been getting less creative over time, and most of the complaints towards gen 5 mons can be redirected back to gen 1

I’m a writer, and from Gen 1 to 4, I didn’t expect much from the story portion of Pokémon games. However, I was really surprised by BW’s story, which actually had a conflict that wasn’t just plain good vs plain evil. I haven’t seen competitive storytelling come back since then. Everyone I know prefers BW2 over BW for some reason, but I prefer BW by a mile.
I also prefer BW over BW2. The sequels have a fine story and I appreciate that they were actual sequels and not just a slightly better version of BW. But BW2 was not as original as BW. BW by far have the better story.
It was very poorly implemented in my opinion. Yes the evil team claims to have noble goals but they don't act like it at all, they feel like a parody of PETA if PETA was even more incompetent. It's again a severe case of ludonarative dissonance and in the end only N was genuine. Maybe i would call it good for a pokemon story which is a low bar, for a rpg story it was still bad.
on the story part bw2 did worse but at the same time it was still pretty fun and refreshing specially when seeing how time has passed since the originals. I love both of them equally and remember them as 1 since one was a continuation but interesting and innovative enough to justify playing it. Also bw2 let me catch riolu early.
@@the3dluxe53 Interesting. Emboar is my nostalgia-goggles final starter evolution, Serperior is my favorite final starter evolution, and Samurott is the final starter evolution that I think looks the coolest.
The problem with Samurott is that for some insane reason they keep him on 4 legs in the games and it makes him look really goofy. He's able to stand on 2 legs and sword fights by drawing the blades on his legs. The anime does that and not only does it make him look more awesome, it lets the design actually make sense.
I'm genuinely surprised that gen 5 had the worst sales. Everyone I knew who had a ds (and didn't have it just sitting away in a drawer) got Black/White, and I don't think I heard anyone say anything negative about it, other than genwunners hating on boring designs because "haha ice cream cone" and "haha garbage bag". For me and many others it was one of our favourite generations, and easily the one we played the most of. Gen 6 on the other hand, while many of us bought 3DS's for, easily turned a lot of us into game critics.
Story good and then what. Competitive was shit. Gen 6 story may be garbage but community was more united than ever, everything related to competitive and online was good, specially early XY, it is what it is.
I'll be honest with you and don't care what you call me, Gen 5 pokemon look the most stupid and the majority are so ugly I wouldn't play them on my team if you paid me to. Now, in terms of new features Gen 5 actually did a great job, to the point that every rom hack and fan game, no matter which gen it is based on, will more often than not use Gen 5 features.
Looking back, I love that I was 10 and barely had access to the internet when these games came out. I thoroughly enjoyed myself without any outside factors effecting my feelings towards the enjoyment. Black and White will forever have a special place in my heart.
Old Pokémon fans, who started off with Gen 1-3, probably appreciate these games more than newer fans that started off with like Gen 6. BW and BW2 were more mature and complex feeling. They made the environments way more detailed. The story was more engaging. If they would have stayed on this path, Sword and Shield wouldn’t have ended up like they did.

Black and White and the sequels were pretty good in my opinion. I had a lot of fond memories playing it back in the day. Gen 5 has always and still continues to be my favorite gen. I think to say that these games “failed” is a stretch. They came just ~1 million short of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum at a time when the 3DS was on the horizon/ already out, DS sales were starting to tank, and flash carts were running rampant. If they had held off Black and White until the 3DS, I think we’d be talking a different story. The timing had the most to do with the sales, not the content of the games and even then they did very well.
they didn't fail in sales because most people in the pokemon community didn't expect them to be THIS trash. remember, all games before were pretty good (for their time). then they played em and found out they are the worst games ever released. all the others have at least one interesting pokemon, while s&w and s&w2 have nothing at all. they all look like gamefreak ordered them on wish. did wish exist back then? would explain this complete mess of pokemon designs.
Did you look at X & Y's numbers though? People forget, but the 3DS was kind of a flop early in its life, and by the time B//W came out there were buttloads of DS's out in the wild. I'd argue on the contrary that B/W actually had the most opportunity to succeed of any Pokemon title before it. Since the breakout success of RBY, Pokemon had been relied upon as a system mover for Nintendo's handhelds until the Switch, with each generation coming out a little over a year after each system. B/W didn't have to sell people on a multi-hundred dollar purchase to play it, they already owned DS's, they just didn't sell themselves as well as Diamond and Pearl sold themselves and systems.
I didn’t know that Gen 5 was looked so down upon on release, I wasn’t really into the online pokémon community and me and my friend group all loved Gen 5.
Gen 5 was my first Pokémon games back in 2012, I went to forms and UA-cam about the Black/White anime (Ash made me go into a furious rage being how dumb he is) and half the comments are just bashing about the Pokémon designs for what I can recall. It was a sad mess but I am happy that Gen 5 is getting the love it deserve in more recent times.
Going to the online community will nearly always ruin your experience. Especially Pokemon community. Personally, I kinda regret that I accidentally peeked on the Pokemon online community. I prefer to quitely enjoy my games than fighting with random people just to prove which game is the best and say that the other games are trash. I'm proud for being a casual fans who just enjoy Pokemon games without questioning complicated stuff than being a Pokemon expert who points every flaw in the game.

I'm the rarest fan that actually loves and appreciates the Unova dex. So many of my favorites come from there. It's a shame that they're hated so much to this very day. Even people who like Gen 5 hate them.
What's interesting is that many Pokémon from previous generations are also absolutely ugly. But perhaps because most fans have played the earlier games way in their childhood they have a stronger sense of nostalgia for those generations. Obviously you won't critizise bad designs on instinct when you play your first pkmn game as a child. The setting of BW was also a slightly more mature one, almost indicating it was means for an older audience already familiar with the franchise. And that is where the most hate stems from surprisingly.
I mean, i dont like Garbodor so i understand when someone criticises his design, its not that good, but i never understood why people complain about Vanilluxe, its one of my favourite pokemon ever, his design is creative and i really like it

I loved the heck out of Gen 5. I was so amazed by the animated sprites, and even though many Pokemon were ugly, they also had some really cool ones, and seeing how every Gym was so unique. I dropped my jaw when I heard the "last Pokemon" and "low HP" themes, they made the battles feel more intense and alive. The music in general for Gen 5 felt so inspired and adventurous; I think it has my favorite themes on the franchise for certain routes and trainers. The only few downsides for this generation for me are the lack of minigames (Musicals were a massive downgrade to Contests, and Entralink is kinda fun, but not as exciting as Secret Bases), a linear region, and the offensive power creep. Besides those personal issues, Unova gave us amazing stuff like seasons, unlimited TMs, cool online additions (Battle seasons, Dream World, Pokedex/C-Gear customization) and pretty epic moments like the Victory Road and Team Plasma League invasion. And that's only speaking about BW1, because BW2 gave us so much more like every trainer getting animations, Join Avenue, a bigger region, Challenge Mode, PWT, Black Tower / White Treehollow, custom Gym themes, cool callbacks to BW1 like N's Pokemon and flashbacks, Medals... they seriously went all out with those games. Too bad XY were so rushed and ORAS didn't went as ambitious as HGSS for remakes, and that Ultra SM weren't DLC instead. They could have gone a very good way on the 3DS era if BW were received better.
My main gripe with BW1 was the complete lack of Gen 1-4 mons in the Unova dex, it made the game feel a little too foreign even for something that was meant to be a reboot in some sense. With BW2, the musical and pokestar studios were lame downgrades from contests. I didn't like the low HP music overall, kind of killed the flow of the battle music. Besides those, I think both BW/BW2 were masterpieces and quite frankly works of genius. The story in BW was undeniably the best they've ever offered, B2W2 really felt like a proper, well conceived sequel, and BW2 did fix the regional dex issue. Even besides the story, they actually invested in lore/worldbuilding with things like the relic castle/abyssal ruins, and left just enough unsaid that people are still making fan theories to this day.
I personally loved BW and BW2 and I loved how different it was. The fact that it didn’t do well because it was “different” makes me upset because that means there won’t be another good Pokémon game. Good job guys. We doomed Pokémon.

This is why both Pokémon and Sonic are dead to me. No matter what ppl are saying, quality no longer dooms or saves a game… I stopped playing Pokémon after Alpha Sapphire because the original Sapphire was my favorite game in the series and X/Y/OR/AS were just so far behind the quality of most 3DS games. I’m glad that I stopped though, because even though I’m still disappointed to hear about S/M and Sw/Sh, it’s all from a distance and I haven’t ruined the series for myself by playing them. But I wish I could have said the same about Sonic and stopped at Generations. Instead, I subjected myself to Lost World which was bad and Forces which was horrifically bad; now I pretty much hate Sonic.
The fact that you are forced to play with and against only Gen 5 Pokémon before finishing the maingame made this game so memorable, i love gen 5, hands down my favorite Pokémon gen.
Black and white was so memorable for me especially since it was the last game with sprites. The mechanics were interesting and the idea of having to use all new pokemon made your choices more memorable because you couldn't just use nostalgic choices. Some of the best anf coolest bug types came from this generation and even tho people clown a few designs (like every generation) it exuded creativity.
Amazing story? FUCK NO! When you say amazing story, I expect Arkham City or Hitman WoA, but no Unova's story is terrible. I'd say the 3rd Birthday mashed with the story of Hitman Absolution, multiplied by Metroid Prime, would still be Godfather compared to Unova. The sprite animations, while ones with fire like Quilava are great and consistent sprites like Zoroark and Garchomp are an absolute masterpiece, I cannot say the same for Mew, Escavalier, Watchog, Sharpedo, and many more which I won't say since this comment would be an hour long. The music on the other hand is fine, I think I don't really like it since there is a sound that appears in N's theme and a couple others, they're fine but it doesn't save Unova from being a terrible generation in general.

I remember not getting the gen 5 games close to release because I was just.. Done with Pokémon for a while. After experiencing 4 gens AND 3rd versions AND spin-offs I was just suffering from Pokemon fatigue, and I think a lot of other fans suffered from it too. B&W was looking like more of the same (at first) and a lot of reviewers were also suffering from Pokefatigue. The reviews weren't stellar and many people were already looking forward to the next technological generation. Of course we didn't realize that was going to be the last time the games actually increased in quality....
I also experienced pokefatigue at the exact same gen, there's definitely some correlation. I went and replayed BW and plan to play BW2 at some point and enjoyed it so much more
I lost it after Heart Gold, Soul Silver, and Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire were tremendous steps back, especially when compared side-by-side with the behemoths that Gold, Silver, and Crystal were. The new pokemon were lame, weird and boring with the exception of a select few and the game progression was absolutely atrocious with many key items in-game being given to you just because. The soundtrack quality took a major nosedive with 99% of the tracks being not memorable at all. Littleroot town was lit though. HG/SS were definitely one of the best remakes of any game and truly did the originals justice while adding enough content to keep things fresh and unique, but not overwhelming. Diamond/Pearl/Platinum were decent enough and enjoyable for a single playthrough, but still could not match the quality of HG/SS. I tried to play Black and White and just ended up qutting - I think from just being tuckered out with pokemon. Pokemon X/Y came out and were so bad that I feel like it was the nail in the coffin for me - the pokemon ship had sailed at that point.
Why X/Y? The new Pokemon were mostly great, the music was mostly very nice, mega evolutions were awesome, the new fairy type was added which was a good counter for dragon and buffed poison type. The starters were nice, team flare was evil unlike the dumb team in sword/shield. Idk what u didnt like about X/Y

I think x and y saved it from tanking, if they didnt add fairys and other counters to stuff that was breaking the meta the game would be super unbalenced without it
It’s not just that BW failed. Mobile games have practically overshadowed the amount of money traditional games make. If you listen to the language used by GF devs, it’s clear they all are obsessed with the money made in mobile games and are trying to figure out how to replicate that in Pokémon: low level effort, games designed for 2-4 minute play intervals, and ease of access for people to come back in and pick up and play without much effort. GF thinks people no longer want the dungeon crawling design of Gens 1-5, but instead simple brainless gameplay just like modern mobile games. In sum, I think mobile gaming ruined Pokémon more than the failures of BW.
Hilariously, Nexomon nailed what they were going for, and went on to make an even better game with the Sequel in Extinction. Plus they actually tried and cared to make a unique story with a good spin, besides "Become the Pokemon Champion.......Again"
Yeah I actually don't mind unova but I do agree that Mobile games are destroying the franchise. Like the new galar games. They're making Pokémon in the overworked now just like in Pokémon go. And the let's go games are basically Pokémon go in a game. And frankly I'm expecting this even more as the generations progress. Its becoming more mindless. However, the diamond and pearl remakes are at least somewhat a step in the right direction.
@@levistokes3960 I'm gonna give Let's Go a pass. Did we need ANOTHER gen 1 remake right now? Absolutely not. Did they do a fantastic job with it? You bet your ass. Let's face it, wild pokemon battles were always about catching mons. There's still a shit ton of trainer battles in the game and you still have to battle legendaries to catch them. I was against this change at first too, but now I appreciate it. Add in all the cool animations they put in, megas in gen 1, pokemon following you again, and new content. Also the scenes involving Pikachu or Eevee are adorable. Compare that to the absolute garbage we got with BDSP. In many ways they are inferior to the games they were supposed to be remakes of.
Man I really miss the 2 animated sprites. When the games went 3 it really lost some of its charm and 3d didn't add anything major. Dnt get me wrong I loved seeing the 3d models on pokemon stadium when I was kids for the first time. But the models often just stand their. At least the sprites were posed in an interesting way to convey some sense of emotion. And Gen 5 made it sprites better by making them move around .
3D has really made the games feel like they went one step forward and three steps back. If the dialogue is still going to be mostly text-based.... whats the point? I'm not saying it needs to all be voiced but there's a huge lack of any animation and its just so stilted and awkward.
I mean...it honestly did, it changed the design of the games forever, also they just look much better in 3D. The sprites stand there too...or just stay in one static pose...which doesn't always feel natural. They made them better...but they aren't all better then 3D.
@@blackatem1174 I disagree, the stripes were fine but could get old after a while, at least with the models they had multiple different attack animations the Pokémon themselves would do.
Ironic how back then people absolutely blasted Gen 5 for being "the worst Pokémon Generation so far" and now we sometimes turn to it when we want to tell Game Freak what we want out of a Pokémon game.
@@saunshilu Yet no one complains when they added a broken mechanic in gen 6 thats turned a sub par pokemon into a pokemon that has the same base stats as a legendary.
What made Black & White and Black & White 2 so different from games before and after was their overall focus on the story. Making the ending of the main story the final battle against Team Plasma's leaders and the legendaries in BW is something that Pokémon has never done before and I honestly think that if Game Freak made another Pokémon game that was more story driven, it would do great! Here's hoping that one day we'll get that.
And the funniest part if you beat the original Black and White games for the first time you don't even become champion. If you do try to become champion the elite 4's and the champion Pokémon's are over lv.70+ making you to work hard for the post game. Another reason I prefer Black/White story, being a champion is not a set goal to beat the game.
Jajuan Mays Right? The downfall and the fans bitching about Gen 5 is the reason why gamefreak don’t make good Pokémon games anymore “story wise, no challenge. Gamefreak put a lot of effort into black and white and for the fans to criticized it, is the reason we won’t get another game like black and white. Only good one was Sun & Moon
@@MrBGP006 TL;DR - Sun and Moon are okay to play, Sword and Shield are average at it's best which really upsets me, and Scarlet and Violet city looking good but it's a waiting game at this point. Rambling down below! Sun and Moon was decent installments until they put the "Ultra" on the game thinking that it's a sequel or some sorts but GameFreak got really lazy and mostly left the game untouched while screwing with some story elements. Most noticeably with Lusamine and Lilly having a water down role in the "Ultra" games. The add-in content helps with the post game but it should of been DLC which the 3DS systems can easily do. 7th gen have a good standing by me but overall it isn't a good generation for replayablility due to the constant hand-holding and story driven the games are. Fairly easy games though with a few difficulty spikes here and there. 8th gen I skipped out entirely due too all the BS gamefreak/TPC thrown at us and half of the fans blindly accepted it. Story even more barebones than X/Y (In-game wise), Dexit happens for "Quality and balance" but they reused the same models and animations for basically every previous mon Gen 7 and downwards so what was the point (And no, I'm not competitive by any chance but I still wanna bring my Samurott in Galar. Cant do that now!), Graphics and textures are just and eye-soar to look at half the time (And other areas it looks really good, lack of time I will guess), the layout of the region is just a straight line with little to no branching pathways nor a post game area to explore... If you only have the base game. The 2 DLC's should of been in the game at launch but you know, lack of time and rushed development. It's a shame because it's a step up from the base game galar that is locked away at $30. I can find entirely jRPG games within a year on steam and other platforms that have a discount that is far better than Sword/Shield in many aspects. I hate saying this shit because I was going to buy the Double Pack on day one when Sword/Shield got released. I don't regret switching to other jRPS at this time! And 9th generation is...? Wait and see, A bit cautious about it but strangely optimistic for what have been seen. I know some people are just loosing there fucking minds (Neutral stands), as a kid I would but being into this franchise by Black and White over 10 years ago is getting harder now to just be hyped. I don't follow that shit no more because in recent years it taught me that most of it don't even life up to expectations at all. Shit I still get excited playing Boom Boom Rocket and Forza Motorsport 4 on my Xbox 360 evetime. Again, Ill wait and see for this time.
I loved USUM and BW, those are definitely my favourite pokemon games. For those who complained that the pokemon games were 'too formulaic', those were the games that switched up the formula the most
I wonder what he thinks of Legends: Arceus now that it's out. I thought it was gonna be mediocre at best and a bad game at worst, but it's actually really good.
@@anthonyroberts7486 The graphics are absolutely terrible, but they're at least consistent and it's a step in the right direction. At the very least, it looks passable, given the context of this being Game Freak's first genuinely big project that looks like an actual fucking console release.
I played Arceus after not playing a new pokemon game for a long time. I personally played for several hours and got really bored. My thoughts on it being that it certainly is a step in the right direction for game mechanics and maybe it gets better, but I just knew that I was going to hate putting a dozen hours into a game that seems to focus on catching pokemon after pokemon. I was hoping for more of an aging up in the story content a little bit (eg more emotional/philosophical). I also found the music really generic and non-immersive (something personally important to me enjoying most games). I can certainly see why many people enjoy it though given that its a new type of pokemon adventure that isnt quite the flops of the previous generations.
@@RyanBoggs I can understand that. I really like all of the new mechanics, and the game does lean a bit towards feeling like a tech demo, but I'm personally having a lot of fun with it. There's enough of a game there for me to be into it, and I imagine it'll be more replayable for me than BotW.
@@anthonyroberts7486 to make a game look good you don’t need the last of us graphics, good art direction can do the job. Just to name 2 look at botw and mario odyssey
Looking back at this video after the release of legends arceus, I feel as if this video needs to be revisited. Legends arceus did a really fantastic job of breaking away from the old rigid husks of the Pokémon video game franchise. Legends arceus is so very immersive, and the post game is phenomenal. Main storyline is a bit dry, but the post game really pulls the game through for me.
Honestly Pokémon isn't known for its story so PLA's doesn't stand out as bad to me. It feels standard for the series, but a bit more interesting. I also play Pokémon almost solely for the content.
@@MrRex-tc6ps The same post game that makes you find all the pokemon in the dex before you can continue? Fell off at that step tbh, I got other games to play for me to wander around PLA hoping to find the missing pieces.
To be fair, black and white have interesting ideas yet still really mediocre stories compared to literally any other jrpg and the dialogue in every game is weird. Still best in the series
Honestly I think if Pokèmon Black and White were released on the 3DS first and not the ds, pokèmon black and white would've changed Pokemon for the better. It was just poor timing.
Ya but they were kinda trapped. The 3DS didn't launch until 2011, a year after B/W, so they would have had to start developing for the 3DS several years before the hardware was finalized. They probably would have had to stick to the sprite based graphics, and the 3DS didn't sell well for the first couple years (possibly because it didn't have an exclusive pokemon game for 2 years).
I Don’t think so. Especially not B2/W2. I was pleasantly surprised at the view I got in B2’s first town, the graphics just fit the DS(i) more. If I had played this on a 3DS, I just wouldn’t like it as much.
Thank you for speaking out for gen5 gang. Not to mention they tried to remove gyms for gen 7 and it received a huge backlash too. People just never want to accept new things.
@@charnalk5572 What was shit about the plot? The innovation and complex themes? Would you prefer another generic and hollow plot like what we’ve been getting ever since?
I'm late to the party but I genuinely didn't like the removal of gyms. I think the gym battles can be revamped, for example the final tournament in Sw/Sh prior to the champ fight, but the trials were boring. You fight one stronger than normal pokemon and that's it. Legends took that same thing and made it much more fun as a single pokemon boss battle. On the other hand, gyms and champions are huge for me in mainline Pokemon games. You can change the rest of the equation as much as you want and make gyms and champions have very different roles in each region or society, but I feel like that's what makes a game mainline. I also felt the trials didn't leave much room for story in SM. Maybe I also am very critical and bored by the trials because of how ridicuously easy Pokemon games have been since Gen 5? I seem to just rush to the end since I enjoy completing the Pokedex and shiny hunting more than the plot with recent installments (Legends excluded).
I do think that, now that we’ve seen and experienced everything that came after Generation 5, people are starting to realize just how special this generation was and have a greater appreciation for it. Even though Gen 3 included my first Pokémon game as a kid, Gen 5 was the one that had the biggest impact on me. The music, the sprites, the combination of 2D and 3D graphics, the compelling narrative, the interesting region… It really was the original Pokémon games at its finest. The implementation of seasonal changes was really under appreciated and should definitely be brought back because it made repeatedly exploring the region even more fun! Also every character from the rivals to the evil team to the gym leaders were all super interesting. And even though not every design for the Pokémon of this region was outstanding, you can tell they put a lot of work into creating a region full of new Pokémon and it had some really great homages to Gen 1 designs. And we got direct sequels with B2W2? I could go on about these games, they’re my absolute favorites.
not only the seasons changes the scenery, it also changesthe layout of the map in winter when all water were frozen and mountain of snow coverred some areas to make higher places accessible.
My best memory with Sword and Shield was the announcement of the region name. When they said it was gonna be called Galar, I immediately knew it was a bad omen Because galar is the Irish word for disease.
gen5 is still by far my favorite and definitely had a large effect on me when i was younger. Im very passionate about conservation and respect for animals and nature and even heading my career down that path now. even if its just nostalgia ill always love it
good for you man, im currently studying to be a wildfie biologist and i believe my passion for it to have been sparked by pokemon(as well as nat geo documentaries)
Conspiracy theory: the reason experience share is always on for your whole party in new games is so that you rapidly get through the games instead of taking the time to look around at how undeveloped they are
Wasn't it because grinding was a slog, especially in gen 5? I mean I like not having to run around for hours just to get my Pokémon strong enough for the next gym.
I think one of the reasons I liked gen 5 so much is because I started playing from gen 4, so I never had the expectation for it to include Pokemon from older generations since every game I played had “new” Pokemon
I actually like b2w2 and gen 7(usum is my favorite in the franchise). But I get where you're coming from. However mega evolution wasn't removed in gen 7 as you get it post game, though I never used it in gen 7 games and it's forgettable so I don't blame you.
Don't get me wrong I like some parts from the new games. For everything gen 8 did bad, I think it has some of the coolest designs. Centiskorch is one of my favourite pokemon ever.
mega evolution wasn’t removed but they definitely sidelined it which is lame imo, i hope i’m wrong but it seems like they’ve given up on mega evolution.
B/W was probably my favorite. I have the most hours in B/W, followed by X/Y simply because of how much I loved a lot of the pokemon designs and the endgame stuff I could do(also I have a soft spot for Amie). HGSS were absolute masterpieces tho.
Scarlet and Violet sold around 3,000,000 units in the first 3 days of the games release making it one of if not the most popular switch games out there. It’s filled with SO MANY glitches and Sequence breaks that it makes me kind of mad.
just think to the annual assassins creed, fifa, cod and also pokemon slop. just because something sells well, does not mean that it is a quality product.
I think one of the main problems is that selling less copies (which it was bound to do while being a new and relatively innovatiive title) is considered a failure. Black and White was a great title BECAUSE it innovated, but BECAUSE it innovated it would of course wind up with less sales (note: it still made good profit), that was the entire point. The fault isn't even in the fans that didn't buy it, its with The Pokemon Company which sees anything but ever-expanding growth as the only sustainable way, and thus saw B&W as a failure when it felt like Gamefreak put some real effort in. In the end The Pokemon Company has take complete control over Gamefreak, the franchise has become the game, not the other way around. Fun fact: Pokemon is the HIGHEST GROSSING FRANCHISE IN THE WORLD, stop treating them like they can't do better. I don't know how to end this... stop buying things that don't look up to your own standards I guess. Shitting on fans of the previous games for not buying B&W is also kind of a dick move. Selling less copies while still making a profit is also not a failure.
Truthfully- I want a Pokémon game which brings back Mega-Evolution, Z-Moves AND Gigantamax in the same game and keep those in the game from then on out. They were cool features (Mega-Evolutions especially) and they shouldn’t have been buried.
The problem is that Game Freak decided the mega gimmick was so good that they just had to bring it into gen 7. If they hasn't done this, you could've just used it as a "its a generational thing" where each gen gen 6+ has a unique gimmick. Imo, megas should've been gen 6, z crystals gen 7 and dynabroken in gen 8.
@@pelpo1238 Because then they're more special instead of being scattered about just cuz, it also installs that these gimmicks, good and the bad never appear again.
I got to be honest. As much as I love these gimmicks (z moves especially), this would just be complete hell for competitive play. Unless it's a spinoff, the metagame environment would be pure chaos and extremely unfriendly for those like myself starting out. I literally started gen eight showdown because dynamax felt much more manageable than the past two gens combined.
I honestly agree with this video, when black and white failed it definitely doomed pokemon into this cycle. As a Pokémon fan myself I want to have a game that uses the same idea as black and white/black and white 2 into a new game.
I thought it was ok. I think the concept was great, with mediocre execution. It needed more trainers, for one thing. And although the mechanics were cool, it got repetitive towards the end. I did really like the way you could summon pokemon to ride.
I love how Pokemon back in Gen 5 was the opposite of what every single franchise is. Gen 5 made pretty much every thing new but people complained about it whereas usually when games do the same shit over and over again people leave because it's just the same.
I legitimately don't understand this opinion. Gen 5 just felt like Gen 4 with worse intro and some maturity and attention to writing. I also don't understand the disdain for Gen 5's region layout. It makes sense even from a national infrastructure planning POV. Also, since Fly exists and is available relatively early in the game (unlike Gen 1 or 6) it matters even less.
@@Postman00 the point I'm trying to make is that when Gen 5 released, everyone complained that most of the game was new, especially the pokemon. Whereas nowadays, if it's not new, you get fucking flamed
@@bepisaxe4464 oh you meant species. Yeah I agree. I think we can appreciate gen 5 being mostly new mons. The problem is that the starting area variety sucks, and it doesn't help that the Fire Water Grass monkeys are horrible past badge #3 (while gen 6 literally gave you gen 1 starters that are viable throughout, and a familiar way to get type variety in your team) The early mons exasperates the impression of new mons being "shite" when in fact it's mostly an early game issue. (Loud minority shortly after release) BW2 addresses this with previous gen mons available earlier. Seriously whoever thought the learnset of the monkeys are okay needs a double slap from Wailord's tail.
oshawott is one of my favourite pokemon, It gives me the memories of sweeping everything in project pokemon with its early focus slam, and using razor shell to sweep everything in brick bronze while being stuck on the grass gym in solo. I once used an emulator on black and white and I began to witness nostalgia with my trio of samurott, zebstrika and leavanny
Both BW and BW2 were fresh great and brought an emotional and amazing story. I loved BW2 for having the league tournament where you battled past gym leaders/ famous trainers.
Honestly, one of my favorite mechanics from gen 5 that I kinda wish got picked up for other games was rotation battles. Sure, they took a bit to get used to but it felt like a nice change to the battle system.
Not only that, there was so much content. You could even play the game again on hard mode after finishing the game. And there are many unique trainers and battle tower like places as well as tournaments. More legendary Pokémon than in black and white and the story is a sequel after the trauma Ghetsis caused caused in black white. The gym leader grew and the trainers you’re around mostly have better personality and growth. And there’s even more out there, and an even wider Pokémon dex with Pokémon you can train and try out than in most other games. Bw2 were likely the best games Pokémon has ever made which is why i still play it till this day. And to this day i still don’t know a new optimal team of rarely used Pokémon like elektross, heracross etc. i have samurott, ampharos who’s gonna be swapped for elektric who will be elektross, krokorok, heracross and arcanine. I’m still thinking of a new member, I’m contemplating to leave it as it is and get hydreigon or just go with ferrothorn
Imagine in gen 7 mega evolving in your rotation battle before the opponent dynamaxes and uses their Z move but you rotate and terrastalize and make your pokemon immune to their attack.
Serperior, Emboar, Samurott designs strikes me as really odd because they could fit into a region based off of china, but they stick out like yellow rain jacket in showers storms in a region based off New York, USA. Got some Dynasty Warriors felling's as soon as I saw 3 of them together!
I feel like I'm living in a simulation. I remember when black and white came out and everybody was trashing them and saying that gen 3 is the peak generation. I get it some generations are better than others but at the end of the day there's a reason if we spend 60 bucks every time a game comes out
Having put in over 100 hours so far into Pokemon Legends, and I am glad to see that you are 100% wrong about everything you said about it. You should make a follow up to this talking about Legends cause its a huge change to the series, and I loved every minute of it!
Agreed, I want them to stop making the old style games immediately. Legends Arceus is an improvement in basically every way. If they can write a more tight story and shine up the graphics, they could keep the same framework for many games or DLCs. I played since Red and Blue and gave up on the franchise around Sword and Shield, but I'm back for this and I already think it's my favorite game.
aged terribly fr 💀 like ofc it could be better in certain areas but I'm so glad they finally considered doing something DIFFERENT, I pray gen 9 carries over some of the features bcuz I adore the open world and the pokemon interacting with us
@@omegavalwin It's a Pokémon game, they aren't meant to be hard. The fanbase has challenges they set for themselves such as never reusing a fainted mon for this exact reason (nuzzlocke). Arceus is a huge improvement, Pokémon games do need a hard mode but that's a separate issue that was way worse in all older games. Even gen 1 was never a real challenge for a five year old, you just keep training until you're able to win. It's always been about fun, not proving your elite gamer skills or something silly like that. Arceus has a lot of great leaps toward being more fun than any of the old games, like eliminating out-of-world cutscenes for battles, and letting you distract and catch from outside of combat.
Pokemon White is one of my top 10 favorite games ever. The Art, the music, the story, characters, battles, post elite four, it's all a masterpiece and there are few games I would rather play then my beloved Pokemon white. I remember that team crystal clear and they were all personal to me and I cared probably a little to much lol
Im kinda scared of the direction for the future gen 5 remake games, I expect a BW3 with the original dragon history not just BW1 or 2 in a better console
I find it interesting that u complaint about the rival Hugh in BW2 or that it feels like a stepback to you, cuz imo Hugh is one of the more interesting rivals for having motivations besides "me strong me defeat you me best of all the people around me" which Gary Oak, Silver, Berry & Cheren have going for it until that point. While yes Hugh was a rival to become strong to.. but it wasnt for selfish reasons. The Purrloin that was stolen, as been stated at least 2 times in BW2, was his grandpa's and a present for his younger sister. It migh the easy to dislike him cuz "he is all about that Purrloin and being angry so often" but can u blame him after what comes across as a trauma to him the way he is acting around Team Plasma which he thought has been dispatched some years ago? Another thing I like to point out is that ur criticsm about "new character feel invalid due to the old characters going around" is not holding much candle and feels like u rushed parts of the story about say Colress to not understand his motives. He especially is actually quite egoistical, for him, even team Plasma is a tool to be used for his research on expanding pokemon's limits and to find those limits and even craving evolution to it is what he is all about, heck after he was defeated on his own airship (it is hinted that he basically gave Team Plasma their power to reform and for the sake of to see how far he can go with his experiments, in a moral gray way I might add, he creates them the airship and helps Plasma terrorize Unova) he wondered if his methods are even that effective on raising and experimenting pokemon in a more "tool" way. And as seen in say Pokemon Sun & Moon, he definitly learnt from it! He isn't a clichee mad scientist trope, just a rather complex character with his morals which is why I appreciate him and.. kinda wish they didnt brought G-Cis back, like the climax could have been after his defeat that he just calls off Team Plasma (which he actually did cuz G-Cis apparently wasnt the complete driven force in the reformed party) after the kyurem & zekrom/reshiram fusion stuff and just walks away looking for himself, which some would say would make him a war criminal but since G-Cis was there.. a tooth for a tooth basically, to have a black sheep to push over the part that was more or less meant for Colress himself.
Silver had potential. He was the son of Giovanni taking down Team Rocket. He was an arrogant, abrasive thief. And, he wasn't even that great as a trainer. In fact he had no reason to ever fight the player.
Honestly, I feel like the reason why the “Funny Battle Gimmicks” strategy increased sales better than BW ever did is because the majority of the fan demographic for Pokemon are kids. Kids understand _”Ohhhh sickkk, it’s an even more badass version of my favorite Pokemon”_ However, Kids don’t understand _”What is the most ethical way to treat Pokemon?”_ because their sense of morality most likely hasn’t even developed yet. As a kid who was playing Pokemon at late BW2 to Early X, I was more drawn to X because “oMg, iT’s AsH gReNiNjA or iT’s MeGa cHaRiZaRd.” However, being slightly older than that time, I feel drawn to BW because of the story and music. Off Topic, I’m wishing for a rated T or M Pokemon game. Obviously never gonna happen. Tl;dr: Pokemon BW was never really intended for kids.
yeah i definitely agree, "mega charizard" is a much easier way to market a game opposed to "here's a Multi layered analysis of what it means to be a pokemon trainer" However there's still so many other ways to market the game that aren't as lazy as that and would be so much cooler. Like Legends Arceus In theory is a super cool idea (which is conveyed in it's marketing) and way more interesting than mega charizard. An adult centred pokemon game would be incredible.
XY Still have it's mature and dark stuff too. BW are still clearly intended for kids. Seriously they may have a good story but they aren't like...some of the darkest Nintendo games ever that are rated T.
I think the reason BW failed was because of a generational shift instead of any decisions made by the developers. The older fans grew out of it and the newer fans didn't find their way in yet. After Diamond, pearl and HGSS you would expect people to hunger for more pokemon.
BW 1 and 2 came out while I was in high school and if anything it was a massive revitalization for the series. Half the people in all my classes, fully ranging from freshmen to seniors (9th-12 grade, all 4 years of high school in the states) were almost constantly playing them at every chance. People were trading and battling, there were tournament clubs started up that were never there before, and every single person who I asked about them loved them. In fact I've never met anyone, either in person or online, who had anything negative to say about BW:1/2. So even after watching your entire video, I have to disagree with you that Black and White killed the franchise, they were just too good for the consecutive games to live up to. I mean X and Y were such huge letdowns, and Sun and Moon just made it worse. They even tried to play off the success of the gen 5 sequels being so damn good with Ultra sun and moon, but the entire 2 generations just felt extremely rushed.
X&Y was rushed but Pokemon Sun and Moon was decent. I wonder what you feel about Pokemon Sword and Shield as those games were the definition of rushed.
@@BackroomsBoi the last games that felt complete were oras. There was still stuff missing but it felt like it wrapped everything up. S/M made you feel that they had to cut stuff while you were playing, like the missing golf course that is still visable on the map, the fact that there are just 7 trials, the fact that one trial is just a corridor or how they treated the artist girls implementation. US/UM was a blatant cash grab and could have been a simple free update, hell even indie games release updates that put these "sequels" to shame. SW/SH was.... God... It exists i guess, the worst mainline game hands down, no contest there. The Gen4 remakes... I don't even acknowledge that they exist, funny enough due to the need of the update that implements the new music, bug fixes and the post game it will be the worst way to play a Gen 4 game as soon as the servers go down in a few years lol. People will litterally stuck with a game that lacks content that already was in the original games.
@@brotbrotsen1100 I honestly think sun and moon was the last good pokemon game and I will die on that hill. I’m willing to admit I like it more than I should mainly because nostalgia but it’s still significant It made me feel something despite having zero expectations for it
It wasn't successful because it didn't sell well. That's it. They're a business at the end of the day and if it's not making as much money as the previous game, then it's bad.
It's so weird hearing "people kind of like this" in response to the story. As someone who was there, it was just another aspect that the fanbase absolutely reviled just like every other part of the game. People thought /getting rid of finite TMs/ was a bad thing when these games were new!
I hated that since Gen 3(my first played game). Because rare once in a lifetime TMs that you'd receive from gym leaders essentially meant that I'm never using that TM ever. That was one of the things I was so glad they did away with in Gen 5 and also helped solidify it being one of the best games to me
one thing to note is that starting with black in white, rather than regions being based on remote areas in japan, they are based on countries (US, france, london). Black and white is a bridge between old and new pokemon in more ways than one
Pokemon Black and White has aged so well for me. Growing up this game was confusing for me, and I didn't like it due to that fact. I thought it was a bad game because it was hard to understand, and because it was different. Fast forward, I am 20 now, not 12. This game is amazing. Compared to what garbage we have now, I feel bad for hating this game, and not enjoying it when I had the chance. The amount of detail in these games are insane, the small details, the sprites, etc.
Well funny abt the starters is they're based on emperors that ruled at specific time perioid. If I'm not mistaken; Ser(perior) is based on the European emperor, Em(boar) is based of the Chinese emporer, (Sam)orott us based of a Japanese emporer which many may not know :) but that's why it's always good to replay the games and pay attention to specific lil details. And having based in New York, it would be hard to make a map vast to explore hence why there isn't much forests or open green area due NY not having that. However, they basically have everything else (the desert is supposedly based on all the construction but frame in a way there they buried all the old history)
Gen 5 was and is still my favorite gen to this day, I was 12 when I played it and yet I felt like the game was a new breath of air, loved the fact that it pushed us to think a bit more
@@rafaelvieira5364 yes and sun and moon was a disappointment too because they didn’t add new megas I actually fw X and Y for the Mega evolution but sun and moon messed up the online battle mode
Ever since gen 5 came out its always been one of my favorite games. I put 600 hours into a single progress of pokemon white. I think the original black and white were amazing games, had the best design and art style of any game the sprites are amazing, the pokemon were great minus a few of course, yes worst starters. The game overall had amazing appeal to me and I love the game and still love the game.
I disagree with you. Gen 5 was peak Pokémon popularity, just with old people botching it because their favorite Kanto mon wasn't in the game. The moment Pokémon ACTUALLY went downhill was with Sword and Shield.
Ironically, you CAN actually go into most of those buildings. And there are human NPCs, and they fixed most of the issues aside from the weird purplish shadows. I don't think it's as good as B/W but Legends: Arceus isn't a bad game.
@@Pobsworth you can't compare games which aren't even in the same category, but I do admit in graphics and filling up open world PLA lacked that's why it is fair to criticize it on that basis but if you look at its features, game mechanics , adventure vibes and small side quest which fill ups the flaw while giving true BW fun.
@@Amartin-mu6oj this is true, but i would call it a major MAJOR leap forward for pokemon. like the fact that ppl can compare it to AAA titles is kinda crazy cuz we definitely couldnt with swsh. id say legends is prob the most important pokemon games to date
Actually Pokemon Black and White brought me back into it. I started actually doing competitive Pokemon and going and hanging out with people and play Pokemon with them.
If you’re here after Legends Arceus then you know this video aged poorly, PLA is honestly one of the greatest Pokémon experiences I’ve ever had especially in recent time.
its the greatest pokemon experience in a long time, but thats just because it has slightly more effort put into it than the average pokemon game. The game is still ugly and has a lack of gameplay features/content. The game is still a joke when compared with other modern games and it only looks good when you compare it to other pokemon games
@@Pobsworth at this point its not game freak’s fault anymore for producing a bad game; it’s the pokemon company’s fault. they push the pokemon developers to create new games within what seems to be less than a two year deadline. what makes it even worse is that game freak was working on pokemon legends arceus at the same time as sword and shield, which is why swsh looks like garbage. the pokemon company doesnt seem to care at all, as we’ve already gotten a gen 9 reveal. making it worse, the release date is late 2022, most likely late november as thats when they usually release their core series games.
BW, BW2, and PLA...All some of the best pokemon experiences of all time. But why is that? Is it because of the story? The characters? The gameplay? No, none of that. All of these games have something in common that makes them the best games in the series. *It's Oshawott* All of these games have Oshawott as a starter. Oshawott for Smash confirmed.
another major problem I have is that some good and unique pokemon, like Vanilluxe, Darmanitan, or especially Reuniclus, are forgotten because they get sandwiched between the generic ones.
gen 5 was my first gen, allow me to give my input yes, tepig and his entire evolution line are shit. i hate them. samurott is chill, not my favorite design ever but simplistic yet slightly imposing serperior is my favorite of the three because i thought snivy looked badass and serperior was literally just a snake, one of my favorite animals (kinda boring tho, for sure) i find that a lot of people take issue with gen 5 pokemon that i think are fine. klink and its evo tree are kinda rough and simple in concept, but they aren't anywhere close to the worst. i always saw musharna as kinda... ephemeral? if that's the right use for that word? the embryo crew is kinda weird but i think it's weird in a lovable way and the list goes on and on, like everyone's favorite ice cream cone i just don't think it really deserves all the bashing it gets from older pokemon vets and clueless kids that never played it. games were fun, characters were (at least, and at least to me) memorable in their own ways with lots of interesting pokemon and a fun endgame with lots of neat legendaries, a fun mythic, and the second game even added the DNA splicers which i believe is one of the coolest legendary gimmick ideas they've put in the main series. not to mention EMOLGA FLYING PIKACHU IS BASED and people so often disregard mons like blitzle, drilbur, timburr, joltik, ferroseed, litwick etc. etc. and who could not like stunfisk? so precious
honestly vanilluxe and garbodor arent even bad designs at all. besides the neighbor’s dog line and the elemental monkey benders, i genuinely dont think theres a single bad design in gen 5. like, even the bug pokemon like leavanny and scolipede look so badass.
Also, Z-moves were creative for me. You can do a lot of shenanigans with the Z-status moves. BUT you can also use it up to do a nuke attack one time, because sometimes you only need that little bit if power in order to take down a hard to beat opponent Pokemon in competitive. They were very versatile.
Meanwhile Gen One stans berating Gen 5 for bad pokemon designs when they have a Boulder, a Pokeball, a Bat and 3 Birds. make that 7, and 2 dragons, one is somehow not a dragon?

Fr the designs look so different and fun in the 2d games a lot of that is lost in translation
I promise you that it's not nostalgia, the animated sprites were so much more pleasant
It has not gotten better with time. It's nostalgia. People have datamined these models and they're the same ones still used way back from XY (2013). There's only little touch ups on the polygons on some models, but otherwise virtually no difference to the eye of the average player.

Well, you have to consider Gen V came after HGSS. You change the formula if things are getting stale, you don't when you're doing good.

Agreed.

They could have gone a very good way on the 3DS era if BW were received better.
your opinion is fantastic I personally think black and white including the sequels were the best and most unique pokemon games.

I stopped playing Pokémon after Alpha Sapphire because the original Sapphire was my favorite game in the series and X/Y/OR/AS were just so far behind the quality of most 3DS games. I’m glad that I stopped though, because even though I’m still disappointed to hear about S/M and Sw/Sh, it’s all from a distance and I haven’t ruined the series for myself by playing them. But I wish I could have said the same about Sonic and stopped at Generations. The fact that you are forced to play with and against only Gen 5 Pokémon before finishing the maingame made this game so memorable, i love gen 5, hands down my favorite Pokémon gen.

The Fans: *…no.*

Yeah I feel you!.

I didn’t mind the designs of the pokes and I actually loved playing BW. Went downhill with XY I feel

Them seeing the success of Pokémon Go must have played a part as well
Hilariously, Nexomon nailed what they were going for, and went on to make an even better game with the Sequel in Extinction.

The pokemon stadium idle animations moved around sporadically which conveyed some sort of emotion, kind of like the gen 5 ones.
I mean...it honestly did, it changed the design of the games forever, also they just look much better in 3D. The sprites stand there too...or just stay in one static pose...which doesn't always feel natural.
They made them better...but they aren't all better then 3D.

And we got direct sequels with B2W2?

just because something sells well, does not mean that it is a quality product.
@@GlacialStarChannel but why? Why make something good, a "generational thing"?
@@pelpo1238 Because then they're more special instead of being scattered about just cuz, it also installs that these gimmicks, good and the bad never appear again.
I got to be honest. As much as I love these gimmicks (z moves especially), this would just be complete hell for competitive play. Unless it's a spinoff, the metagame environment would be pure chaos and extremely unfriendly for those like myself starting out. I literally started gen eight showdown because dynamax felt much more manageable than the past two gens combined.
@@jasminemiller7485 dynamax is banned in most smogon formats though
I honestly agree with this video, when black and white failed it definitely doomed pokemon into this cycle. As a Pokémon fan myself I want to have a game that uses the same idea as black and white/black and white 2 into a new game.
To be fair legends Arceus has turned out to be awesome haha
agreed lol i liked the vid but this is the one point i think he was completely wrong about
I thought it was ok.
Gen 5 made pretty much every thing new but people complained about it whereas usually when games do the same shit over and over again people leave because it's just the same.
sacrifices to the church of nintendo.
You clearly don't play runescape
(Loud minority shortly after release)
BW2 addresses this with previous gen mons available earlier.
I once used an emulator on black and white and I began to witness nostalgia with my trio of samurott, zebstrika and leavanny
he's been real quiet since legends arceus came out
I come from the future, to bring news! Legends: Arceus was actually good! One of the best in the franchise!
@@bunnyben5607 Too many trash gimmicks only good one was mega evolution.
Samurott design kinda has old school touch. Its not overly designed or overly skinny.
Serperior, Emboar, Samurott designs strikes me as really odd because they could fit into a region based off of china, but they stick out like yellow rain jacket in showers storms in a region based off New York, USA. Got some Dynasty Warriors felling's as soon as I saw 3 of them together!
I grew up on black and white (the anime), so it's always had a special place in my heart. I was astounded to find out that people didn't like it
Same
ITS NOT ALWAYS BLAACK AND WHIIITE ITS NOT ABOUT WIN OR LOSE ITS THE PATH YOU CHOOSE
@@pismodude2 legends is a baby easy game no thanks
@@omegavalwin may you find happiness
aged terribly fr 💀 like ofc it could be better in certain areas but I'm so glad they finally considered doing something DIFFERENT, I pray gen 9 carries over some of the features bcuz I adore the open world and the pokemon interacting with us
@@omegavalwin It's a Pokémon game, they aren't meant to be hard.
Black and white have always been my favorite seeing as its the generation i grew up with and its nice to see its finally getting love and not hate.
Im kinda scared of the direction for the future gen 5 remake games, I expect a BW3 with the original dragon history not just BW1 or 2 in a better console
Judging by how BDSP went idk if I even want a gen 5 remake
Maybe a Pokemon legends: kyurem? That would be cool! We'd get to see kyurem in his complete form
He isn't a clichee mad scientist trope, just a rather complex character with his morals which is why I appreciate him and.. kinda wish they didnt brought G-Cis back, like the climax could have been after his defeat that he just calls off Team Plasma (which he actually did cuz G-Cis apparently wasnt the complete driven force in the reformed party) after the kyurem & zekrom/reshiram fusion stuff and just walks away looking for himself, which some would say would make him a war criminal but since G-Cis was there.. a tooth for a tooth basically, to have a black sheep to push over the part that was more or less meant for Colress himself.
me strong me defeat u 😂😂
Silver had potential. He was the son of Giovanni taking down Team Rocket. He was an arrogant, abrasive thief. And, he wasn't even that great as a trainer. In fact he had no reason to ever fight the player.
Honestly, I feel like the reason why the “Funny Battle Gimmicks” strategy increased sales better than BW ever did is because the majority of the fan demographic for Pokemon are kids.
Kids understand _”Ohhhh sickkk, it’s an even more badass version of my favorite Pokemon”_
However, Kids don’t understand _”What is the most ethical way to treat Pokemon?”_ because their sense of morality most likely hasn’t even developed yet.
Tl;dr: Pokemon BW was never really intended for kids.
yeah i definitely agree, "mega charizard" is a much easier way to market a game opposed to "here's a Multi layered analysis of what it means to be a pokemon trainer"
However there's still so many other ways to market the game that aren't as lazy as that and would be so much cooler. Like Legends Arceus In theory is a super cool idea (which is conveyed in it's marketing) and way more interesting than mega charizard.
An adult centred pokemon game would be incredible.
Honestly reccomend checking out fangames like insurgence if you want a basically T or M rated pokemon game.
How did you not find a detractor? I was literally in elementary school and I still knew they existed.
That was one of the things I was so glad they did away with in Gen 5 and also helped solidify it being one of the best games to me
I remember the genwunners hating everything but the tm thing???? REALLLY????? Wow thats actually ridiculous
one thing to note is that starting with black in white, rather than regions being based on remote areas in japan, they are based on countries (US, france, london).

I will never forget BW's full focus on new monsters without mixing in old ones as usual, and a lot of them were pretty good too.
More like alola. And alola 2 nailed it further
Ironically, you CAN actually go into most of those buildings. And there are human NPCs, and they fixed most of the issues aside from the weird purplish shadows.
I don't think it's as good as B/W but Legends: Arceus isn't a bad game.
its a good game if you compare it to previous pokemon games.
If you compare it to other games that come out in 2022, though, the game is terrible.
It isn't a bad pokemon game, it's a pretty mediocre triple aaa game in general though
All of these games have something in common that makes them the best games in the series.

another major problem I have is that some good and unique pokemon, like Vanilluxe, Darmanitan, or especially Reuniclus, are forgotten because they get sandwiched between the generic ones.
gen 5 was my first gen, allow me to give my input
yes, tepig and his entire evolution line are shit. i hate them.
samurott is chill, not my favorite design ever but simplistic yet slightly imposing
serperior is my favorite of the three because i thought snivy looked badass and serperior was literally just a snake, one of my favorite animals (kinda boring tho, for sure)
i find that a lot of people take issue with gen 5 pokemon that i think are fine. klink and its evo tree are kinda rough and simple in concept, but they aren't anywhere close to the worst. i always saw musharna as kinda... ephemeral? if that's the right use for that word?
the embryo crew is kinda weird but i think it's weird in a lovable way
and the list goes on and on, like everyone's favorite ice cream cone
i just don't think it really deserves all the bashing it gets from older pokemon vets and clueless kids that never played it. games were fun, characters were (at least, and at least to me) memorable in their own ways with lots of interesting pokemon and a fun endgame with lots of neat legendaries, a fun mythic, and the second game even added the DNA splicers which i believe is one of the coolest legendary gimmick ideas they've put in the main series. not to mention EMOLGA
FLYING PIKACHU IS BASED
and people so often disregard mons like blitzle, drilbur, timburr, joltik, ferroseed, litwick etc. etc.
and who could not like stunfisk? so precious
honestly vanilluxe and garbodor arent even bad designs at all. besides the neighbor’s dog line and the elemental monkey benders, i genuinely dont think theres a single bad design in gen 5. like, even the bug pokemon like leavanny and scolipede look so badass.

I felt like gen 4’s mystery dungeon had that impact on me where everything else just couldn’t compete, which was okay since they were side games
what's funny is that it's unironically the best pokemon game alongside mainline ds games
Meanwhile Gen One stans berating Gen 5 for bad pokemon designs when they have a Boulder, a Pokeball, a Bat and 3 Birds. make that 7, and 2 dragons, one is somehow not a dragon?
