I was taught to lubricate AN fittings with aluminium cutting oil. That way, when I invariably cross-threaded the bastard, I'd at least get a nice clean, new thread. Then remove and repeat, an nauseam, ad infinitum. 😁👍

We run the pumps on separate power supplies so we can prime the surge tank first, ideally you want your main pump closer to the surge tank and really the fuel pressure regulator should be as close to engine as possible as you can have a pressure prob between reg and engine over that distance on full throttle compared to idle. We also run our return line back into the surge tank not the main tank 👍🏻

I'm not sure i understand what the pump problem was. The original main pump didn't get a pressurized feed before, and it feeds from the bottom of the swirl pot, and only from the top (after filling to the brim) is being sent back to the tank. So the main pump should treat the swirl tank like a regular, atmospheric pressure fuel tank...only you've got a fairly long hose running from swirl to main pump, so purging the air may slow things down the priming process. You also probably need to get the swirl tank at least partially full before it has enough push behind it to help get the fuel flowing to the main pump, and all this takes time. Putting swirl and pump on the same side would be better, but finding room for that sort of fitment could be problematic.
Also, I've been told that 3-4 psi for a Weber is fine. Flow is much more important than pressure, but so long as your lines can flow enough, pressure can be virtually ignored. I've gravity fed a 38mm Weber in a Mini before (fuel pump packed in, so it fed from a soda bottle with a hose shoved in it, taped to the windscreen and with the bonnet partially open. Not something I'd recommend, but the engine ran fine with just the pressure from gravity feed.

thank you - yea I would love to have everything close together, however, as you say there is just not enough room - this is only a temporary fix until I come up with a better solution

Now that we've had the coup in Niger where all the Uranium is, can we please have those nice clean atomic powered cars we were promised in the 60s?
