I saw Steve Martin back in the late 70's (sorry...dating us both) in concert in San Diego and laughed so hard I had tears running down my face and a side ache from laughing so hard. His comedy was and is brilliant. What I love about Steve Martin is that he is many faceted and I love that he is still a pretty humble guy who switched gears and now plays his banjo and is making CDs.
Steve and Stephen, you are two of the best personalities and comedians I have seen in my short life. Thank you for all the creativity you bring to our world.
So many comments about how awkward this interview is. I don't see the awkwardness. It's just a nice conversation between 2 people. And most of it are funny. Stephen just doing what he usually do. No difference than any other interviews honestly..
I agree, it was a great interview, and both men were in fine form. I dunno about the bizarre user comments, maybe it's just trolling by Trump supporters ... They're endlessly butthurt about Stephen, so always trying stir shit up...
My dad is one that went full on gray/white at a super young age. Was "salt and pepper" by 23 years old-way before I was even born. I'm 36 now, he's 62, and his hair's been the color of Steve Martin's for roughly 30 years now(so he was in his very early 30's). My dad without gray hair wouldn't be my dad. LOL AND what's cool about it is, like Steve, since he's been gray for so long through his younger years, he looks like he's barely aged. For a 62 year old man, you could easily peg him for being in his early 50's. He just does. not. age. He's basically looked the same my entire life. /cool story
Hard to believe Steve is *72 years old.* (Born August 14, 1945) I LOVE this guy. I have since _The Jerk_ and listening to his comedy albums. I think it's an interesting fact that he's working with Martin, because that means that it's Martin S. working with S. Martin! Their names bookend each other nicely. ( Would love to see a sequel to _The 3 Amigos_ )
Got a chance to see him live with Martin Short over the weekend. Such a blessing. Almost two hours long and I think I laughed at least once a minute through the whole thing. It made my jaw hurt.
I wouldn't say it was awkward, but Colbert is a little pretentious. He doesn't like things to get too silly, because he likes to be thought of as clever and witty. And he's overly careful not to be made a fool of. You can see a lot of that here.
Listening to him just makes me feel like I’m hearing my own dad. Just a pleasant, familiar voice that I’ve grown up hearing. When has he not been a great dad in a movie?
OMG I love Steve Martin 😂...pure genius. Cute how he trolls Stephen and his props like a comedic elderly dad unwittingly interrupting his son’s talking points.
"You know what... I'm way too high to deal with this right now!" I think this is the line i'm going to use now every time shit hits the fan curtesy of Trump. LOL
Right?? My sister and I used to listen to his albums. Yes, albums!! Let's get small!! I'm 55 now, lol. We grew up on comedy albums. Carlin, Wilson, Martin..even Eddie Murphy!!
If you haven't been watching Steve Martin throughout his career, I can understand why you might think this interview was awkward. But they're doing a comedy shtick, parodying the typical late night show interview by introducing fake sparring. Any apparent contentiousness is intentional, and has been typical for interviews of Steve Martin for many years.
Wait, I didn't even think some people might not get it.. Seems obvious.. I mean I did grow up watching his films but it still seems like an obvious bit they're doing. Stephen is great at doing bits anyway, and Steve Martin is legend; they have a live audience to entertain, and also like to have fun instead of doing some boring talkshow night after night. It's way more fun for a sketch comedy actor/comedian and one of the greatest comedians ever to do some wild improv bit and play off the other. Lots of celebrities/talkshow hosts are great at this. One of my favs is Robin Williams on Craig Ferguson.
The set up to that gag from 5:40-6:15 is comedy GOLD..!! I'm still laughing 5 yrs. later..! Genius..I use this at times when telling someone about any random call I may have received..you wouldn't believe how many take it seriously..!..the best is when you can tell it to someone when in a crowded elevator..the reaction of other's is beautiful ! ..😂
I love Steve, if you have never watched the movie, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," you don't know what you are missing!! Michael Cain is in this movie also, now that I think about it, I'm going to go watch it again!!
After watching the first minute and twenty seconds of this, I've just realized something: Steve Martin and David Letterman have nearly the identical speaking voice. It's made more amazing by the fact that Steve Martin is from Waco, TX, while David Letterman is from Indianapolis, IN.
This is classic Steve Martin comedy. Also, he seemed either drunk or high. Steve's always been a more slapstick style comedian. Back then, they wrote their comedy bits/sketches whereas a lot of the comedic timing now plays an awkward improvisation. He's very tongue-in-cheek, so while a lot of people take him seriously, he's typically just being a satire of himself.
as a child, when i saw a recorded copy of dead men don't wear plaid, i thought i was watching harrison ford. love this guy. brought many happy moments! those aren't pillows!
OM Goodness! It's so wonderful to see Steve Martin again! He looks great, and has me chuckling in delight! Seeing Steve has made my day! Wow! Hope we can see more of Steve! I was always a fan of his humor! He's one cool Dude! LOL! Love him!
I first heard Steve Martin in the late 70s (Wild and Crazy Guy). Love his work. I got turned on to his banjo playing about 5 or 6 years ago. Very cool.
im so happy to see steve martin healthy and still creating things.
Steve Martin is such a damn legend
This was such a stupid interview and 90% of his jokes aren't fit for a god damn open mic. You are part of the problem.
stizzlespinizzle dude fuck off, your hate isnt wanted here.
He is! Does anyone know how old he is? He looks the same, like he hasn't aged a bit.
And he came from such humble beginnings; Born a poor black child and now appearing on The Late Show with his second album.
one of my fav skits he did from my fav album of his ua-cam.com/video/Cjjsz14hL48/v-deo.html
The only person who aged prematurely then stopped aging
I'd add Larry David
I saw Steve Martin back in the late 70's (sorry...dating us both) in concert in San Diego and laughed so hard I had tears running down my face and a side ache from laughing so hard. His comedy was and is brilliant. What I love about Steve Martin is that he is many faceted and I love that he is still a pretty humble guy who switched gears and now plays his banjo and is making CDs.
And to think, he has more awards for music than for comedy...
His books are totally hilarious as well. His movies are comedy classics👏👏👏
He does not age
Pierce Kafka yeah he was born like that.
Bob Trenwith Yes, he was born looking 60 years old.
Permanently looked 60, now he's 72 it's paying off
I was thinking that, but he he has looked old forever. Good in 2017 though.
Neither does his humor.
Steve and Stephen, you are two of the best personalities and comedians I have seen in my short life. Thank you for all the creativity you bring to our world.
this gave me a big ol' smile on my face.
"You like to reach down there!"
"Well that's where things are...."
My favorite line from this interview.
Steve Martin looks the same for the last 30 years
He looked 55 when he was 30. And he still looks 55.
So lucky
One of the perks of having white hair in your 20's. My grandfather went bald in his 20s. He looked pretty much the same when he was 90!
Don Letter I'm talking about about his skin thought...smooth as a baby's butt
that's because he is immortal
Twas a lovely interview. Those of you who think it was awkward don't understand comic timing.
Andrew Earnest wow, I had no idea we were in the presence of THE comedy litmus test
Right! Comedians like Bob Newhart made a career of being "awkward". Steve is a living legend.
AND those that made those negative comments obviously never have seen his movies.
Amazing comedy, Steve is a genius. Awkward? Get a clue, don't miss the boat.
jack p Yep, a litmus test indeed, one of the funnist, wittiest Late Show segments IMHO.
Excellent interview! Colbert gives Steve just enough room to play. Simply masterful.
Steve is the best. My hero. A true renaissance man. I saw the show with Martin Short and it was brilliant.
I miss seeing him in funny movies. Planes, Trains & Automobiles was one of the best!! 'You're going the wrong way', lol, I love that scene!!
That was so funny. One of the best interviews Colbert has done. Martin was on fire.
I admire this guy. I just goes out and does what he loves to do. He is so multi talented. He has a great life.
I'm sure Steve Martin would be laughing his ass off if he saw all those serious comments about the interview being awkward.
Kids these days!
Qwhat9 And shaking his head. 😆
Bingo
This guy does not age, I sear he looked just like this in 1990, wtf!
Brian Burnham the trick is to dye your hair white in your thirties
He does look the same! His face hasn't changed at all.
He actually went white in his late twenties. Its like baldness but much more rare.
Brian Burnham And in '75.
For a 62 year old man, you could easily peg him for being in his early 50's. He just does. not. age. He's basically looked the same my entire life. /cool story
Not only is Steve Martin a banjo player - he's a very fine banjo player with a particularly soulful folk style
He has such an great comedic mind. Always trying to come up with something weird, original and experimental that just might not work! I love it.
I love him so much. Watch everything he has done.
This is one of my favorite interviews. This all just struck me as adorable
"Live Outside Carnegie Hall" hahaha...
Really don't get the complaints about the crowd and interview. Seemed like they were having a fun time.
They were. Ppl need to calm the fuck down.
Trump is proof.
Got a chance to see him live with Martin Short over the weekend. Such a blessing. Almost two hours long and I think I laughed at least once a minute through the whole thing. It made my jaw hurt.
it is not awkward, it's just a nice conversation. What's wrong people, jeez..
Title of this video is super cringe
I feel like there's some tension between Stevens here.
The irony of you using the term super cringe seems to be lost on you...
I wouldn't say it was awkward, but Colbert is a little pretentious. He doesn't like things to get too silly, because he likes to be thought of as clever and witty. And he's overly careful not to be made a fool of. You can see a lot of that here.
He's pulling back because of certain constraints but I'm confident that Colbert is talented enough to pull laughs out of any conversation.
Listening to him just makes me feel like I’m hearing my own dad. Just a pleasant, familiar voice that I’ve grown up hearing. When has he not been a great dad in a movie?
If Steve Martin and Martin Short had a store would they use their first names or their last names?
"Startin Short"
+BladeWinters Brilliant!
Questions that need answers!!!
Martin & Martin.
Steve & Short's Stop-n-Shop
Lovely gentleman
😍♥️💛💚💙💜My favorite actor🎭/comedian🎦/banjo player🎻.... I would sooooo loooove 💖 to meet him!!!!
OMG I love Steve Martin 😂...pure genius. Cute how he trolls Stephen and his props like a comedic elderly dad unwittingly interrupting his son’s talking points.
Saw him and Martin Short in Orlando a few months ago. They were great
I watched that show with him and martin short. I LOVED it! I've liked steve martins comedy since I was a kid. Great interview :)
It's freaky how similar Steve Martin's voice is to Dave Letterman now.
Oh my god. I was just thinking that
Yeah, it's pretty trippy!
I heard it too. Freaky but nostalgic
That's very true! Good ear!
😂😂
Oh my! One can never get enough of Steve Martin! Can’t stop laughing 😆
How the heck is Steve Martin so dang funny?! He is so quick, and understated ~ not to mention, he's clean comedy! Awe_mazing
"You know what... I'm way too high to deal with this right now!" I think this is the line i'm going to use now every time shit hits the fan curtesy of Trump. LOL
Hahahahahaha!!!
Hahaha
Love Steve Martin. Always have.
Steve Martin is 72 now damn I feel old.
Larry Panozzo imagine how he feels 😂
73
Right?? My sister and I used to listen to his albums. Yes, albums!! Let's get small!! I'm 55 now, lol. We grew up on comedy albums. Carlin, Wilson, Martin..even Eddie Murphy!!

Or maybe Steve Martin is just arrogant.
Wait, I didn't even think some people might not get it.. Seems obvious.. I mean I did grow up watching his films but it still seems like an obvious bit they're doing. Patrick O'Brien
Robin on Craig’s shows are my favorite all time chat show appearances. Brilliant!!
No you douche, YOUR the one not getting it.
It's a bit, schtick...
@@patrickobrien5311 You're underestimating how stupid a lot of people are
i feel like I'm watching Steven Colbert talk to his dad, they look very similar.
What delight to listen to these two gentlemen
I grow up watching Steve martin movies love him
Steven Martin has always been my inspiration to write about culture lived and felt as whole and real in a dual core of identity.
The set up to that gag from 5:40-6:15 is comedy GOLD..!! I'm still laughing 5 yrs. later..! Genius..I use this at times when telling someone about any random call I may have received..you wouldn't believe how many take it seriously..!..the best is when you can tell it to someone when in a crowded elevator..the reaction of other's is beautiful ! ..😂

I need to thank Steve Martin for giving me so many happy hours watching his movies. 🥰 😂
Steve Martin is still awesome.. I love his sense of humor.
Steven Martin is brilliant. I'm a scholar, not an actor but I'd love to take his MasterClass.
he really does know his art. He probably knows more about the Group of Seven than most Canadians.

Steve was not high or drunk. He was clearly perturbed by Stephen's disinterest
I thought he said himself "I'm way too high to deal with this right now"
Live outside Carnegie Hall not sure why that cracks me up so much
as a child, when i saw a recorded copy of dead men don't wear plaid, i thought i was watching harrison ford.
love this guy. brought many happy moments!
those aren't pillows!
He’s always a great guest. If Steve Martin is going to be on I make a point to try to stay up and watch
He's awesome, like y'all already said, he hasn't changed a bit, he always looks the same, it's amazing!
This is awesome, I bet when cameras are off Stephen and Steve talk alot and have such a great time, they're basically the same lol
Stephen’s band is SO GREAT!!! 😍😍😍 I love them!
This interview was not awkward....it was light hearted and casual....🖖
whoa...Steve Martin stopped aging like 30 years ago... he's looked almost exactly the same for my entire adult lifetime!
Its so nice and great to see you posting full interviews on UA-cam. thanks. Subscribed.
Luv Steve..
I sense animosity from Stephen. And I'm never wrong.
"Are we done?" I love him.
He sounds a bit like David Letterman.
dude he sounds just like Letterman!
his diction is a little mushier
used to look and sound incredibly similar to harrison ford.
when i was younger, i really couldn't tell who it was in dead men don't wear plaid
I thought the exact same thing. His emphasis and delivery of jokes I'd very similar to Dave.
Andreas Korsgaard I thought that too actually. Funny.
OM Goodness! It's so wonderful to see Steve Martin again! He looks great, and has me chuckling in delight! Seeing Steve has made my day! Wow! Hope we can see more of Steve! I was always a fan of his humor! He's one cool Dude! LOL! Love him!
Haha a great interview. Totally played the audience and had a good time doing it. Improv masters
I forgot how funny he is. They are great together.
How did I forget how funny Steve Martin is?! 😆
He loves what he's doing right now but it sure would be good to see him in a movie again. Lucky guy to be great friends with Marty Sheen.
Stephen really knows how to keep a interview from becoming awkward. It almost does constantly and he deflects it.
So, I really loved this interview. It was fun, they seemed to have a good time. I seriously don't get where people see "awkward".
lorchen123 - it's because they don't get it.
I will be watching future interviews now for the "snip-edit" hand gesture =)
How Sweet! I love it when you two get along!
I had no idea that Steve Martin was the Newest Bohemian!
I first heard Steve Martin in the late 70s (Wild and Crazy Guy). Love his work. I got turned on to his banjo playing about 5 or 6 years ago. Very cool.
individually these two are amazing. together they destroy. i knew colbert was a genius, and now i know martin is too!
Steve Martin is such a delight.
I love ❤️ Steve Martin ....😍😍😘😘
I hit Like just watching his entrance...no one has greeted the desk on their way over :) What a Legend!
Steve Martin is an incredible human being
My first experience of Ojai, Ca was during my first visit to America in early 2012, prior to my emigration. It came in the form of Chuck Testa.
So good to see Steve Martin again. That was a funny interview. Loved it.
I ADORE STEVE! ♥♥♥
Steve and Stephen together is amazing. I'd love to see them in a skit together.
Steve Martin is the best.
I'd recommend his memoir Born Standing Up to anyone
“I’m way too high to deal with this” and I click like.
Dam guy is a pure legend in comedy I bet Colbert was living out a childhood dream
This legend in 72 years old!
Steve Martin sounds a bit like David Letterman.
I love Steve Martin!
Steve Martin has looked exactly the same since he was 7 years old.
Steve Martin is a Renaissance man and the best comedian of our time.
This man is such an amazing and funny person!!!
Steve Martin is so talented and pleasant
What an incredible musician.... This man is more than white bread! Shout out to MARTIN SHORT!!
*Ben Franklin*
was a famous polymath :)
Both Pink Panther movies with Steve Martin are something I treasure very much. really funny movies.
