Many of you may not know that I was not always a singer and that guitar was my first instrument.
In fact, I joined my first professional band at the age of 19 as a second guitar player to the leader of the band who is billed as "the fastest guitar player in the world".
To be candid, the band was extremely demanding and one of the most demanding positions in the band was that of the lead singer.
The leader of the band wanted a Steve Perry/Mickey Thomas kind of voice as we rehearsed 18 songs back-to-back, 3-4 times per week, not including gigs on the weekends.
This put extraordinary stress on the vocalists, to the extent that the band went through many, many member changes.
One of the only vocalists that was able to step up to the plate and rise to this kind of stamina and endurance was none other than Rob Rock (I was singing back up vocals to Rob for the time that I was in the band).
Rob went on to record with the band with famed producer Dieter Dierks of The Scorpions.
Rob had intuitively learned some things about glottal compression and how not to over sing in his upper mid-voice to give him the extraordinary ability to sing in a very high range for hours on end without losing his voice.
Rob Rock is an American heavy metal singer who has gained worldwide recognition as the lead vocalist for the supergroup M.A.R.S. and Impellitteri. Rock has also released 4 highly acclaimed solo albums and his live concert video "Live in Atlanta".
Rock was recently honored as an inductee into the Metal Hall of Fame for his contribution to the metal music scene, thus solidifying his status as a respected figure in the metal community. You can find him at:

One of the most iconic hard rock songs of all time from some of the most influential musicians of all time. Can't go wrong there! And who's slaying it in this video? Ken Tamplin and Rob Rock trading verses and laying down vocal harmonies that are sweet sweet sounds to my ears. Well done, boys, well done! Especially the harmonies, perfectly mixed and performed. This was a great way to start my day. I thank you for that!

Wow! The power, the control, stamina, range…your Timber…just wow! Some have all that, but Timber is all wrong. You both have gr8 sounding voices on top of power, control, stamina & range. It’s not just all acrobatics.
As a vocalist myself, I can sing many types of music...BUT....Dio is one of a few thorns in my singing side. GREAT job, fellas.

Great version but imo the original Rainbow studio recording had a slinkiness to it that is rarely reproduced. Even Rainbow used to thrash it out live. I think it was in the Craig Gruber bassline that I suspect Ritchie thought was too busy cos he didn't last long in the band!

Ordinarily, I don't enjoy other people singing Ronnie James Dio, including Ken, not because they don't do a stellar job, but because I feel Ronnie's voice is so iconic, nothing else sounds right (this despite doing a medley with my band of Heaven & Hell, incorporating Holy Diver, among other songs).
This, however, is on another level.
Two masters of their craft, doing justice to a song that is the stuff of legend.
Bravo, both of you!
