How To Sing Long Notes - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
I've heard the phrase over and over again: "Man, that singer has a set of pipes".
And another: "Man, they really have a set of lungs".
Obviously, lungs play a major key role in the respiratory process. Lungs are a gigantic honeycomb of small pockets strung together inside the rib cage that has very little actual strength to it at all.
The power comes from the upper diaphragm - which is the primary respiratory response muscle -, the many muscle structures in the abdomen, and also the second diaphragm that is down at the pelvic floor.
In this video, I discuss the concept of "glottal compression".
Many interpret this as compressing air at the glottis or the vocal folds themselves.
And while some of that is true, there is a network that works together, compressing air in the lungs while using open throat technique, and then ultimately compressing air in the glottis to sustain long singing notes.
For all of you singing enthusiasts, please come along for the ride to learn how to sustain long singing notes.

As expected, Ken your ability to break this singing science down is greatly appreciated by all of us Sifu🙏🏼🎤

...I'm 59 now and I can't hit the notes that I once did for one reason or another. I'm grateful that you can as it keeps our genre of music alive in the younger people you teach. I was lead singer in a local bar tribute band back in the 80's-90's my Idols at the time were Steven Tyler, David Coverdale, Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach ect. I sing in my apartment now and when I'm belting it out some of the neighbors complain but others will thank me as it takes them back to their younger years. Thank You for all that you do brother. 🤘🎸🎤🥁🎶🤘

I have learned so much from your videos Ken, thank you, glottal compression has been so difficult to get a work. Its amazing how all the departments for a lack of a better word work together. Its like learning vibrato and not knowing how the strength of the diaphragm makes it effortless the stronger it gets.

Yes, Mikaflyd, there are many components to proper singing, and they all fit together to build a great voice. The more you learn, the more it helps.

Thank you, Ken. Watching this video reinforces that I am doing everything right with my vocal journey. Even a few months ago, I would not attempt a song like Painkiller, as my head voice just wasn't strong enough. But now, I regularly sing Exciter songs Long Live the Loud and Beyond the Gates of Doom, which has a super long held note at the end of the song. It is even more impressive when you know that the drummer is the lead singer of that band!

Thank you for these lessons. I really appreciate them. I'm still working on my confidence to take lessons in earnest, as I like to sing. These have helped me work toward the goal of learning to sing in public.
Keep up the great work! You're making a difference with all of us!

So glad ya ALWAYS mention what MUST be considered along WITH developing a new technique.😎 Seems like them ole pesky VOWEL MODS are at the root of all the EVIL that befalls me?☺China Grove in E is not too bad on me anymore BUT?..Im bout ta DIE gettin thru" Listen to the Music"?...So much so, I re recorded my music trx in D..THEN...I Isolated the phrases in each and dicovered where WEAK vowels were, and LTTM has more longated phrasing so THATS why need to really woodshed this technique cuz , honestly , I have trouble in D as well?..Thanks Ken for continuing ta post out what we NEED, (rather than want sometimes)😎

Played trumpet for years back in the day. Definitely took more air to play long low notes than higher ones. Similar science I guess. Weirdly, takes air compressing and air speed to play higher notes, but more air volume to play LOUDER.

    Hi Ken
Do you have an explanation of why I can’t hold a note without losing air and coughing
I have Asthma and nodes on my vocal chords
Is there any thing I could do with this problem?

It depends on how bad your asthma is, but I have a lot of students who sing well despite their asthma. Good vocal technique can help a lot, and using the right techniques can help reverse some vocal damage.
