I just shot a feature film with the S5. I shot into the Ninja V so I got Full Frame, 5.9k RAW Proress 422 at 12 bit all day long in hot temps and never had to think about the camera once. The image is pure poetry, same color science and the Varicam. I have shot Vari's and Alexas and Reds, etc, and this image stands up with the best of them. You cannot tell them apart in the edit except for the fact you have a full frame aesthetic which to my eye is much better than Super 35. Just two small issues, rolling shutter, you have got to be careful with action sequences in full frame, no fast pans, make the action come toward or away from the camera, and you will brake lots of micro HDMI cables unless you clamp them. The S5 (not the mk II) is simply the best bang for your buck out there, and even cheaper now because of the advent of the MK II. You literally have to spend 50k on an old Vari to get anywhere near the image out of this little monster. It is the same sensor as the S1H but you can have two of these for the same price. The S5II X looks like it might offer some redundancy back up in terms of internal codecs and the enhanced IBIS, just in case the Ronan takes a crap, but I would happily shoot my nest 2 or 3 films on the S5 and know I can get 5.9k RAW all day without worry. Important point for nubes: the "cinematic look" has nothing to do with the camera. If you point a 90k Alexa at a bag of laundry in the midday sun it is going to look like a bag of laundry in the midday sun. The "cinematic look' is all about composition, colors, lights, shapes, textures, the art department and the costume people working in concert around the color palette, all in front of the lens. It has very little to do with the camera apart from use of lenses, anamorphic, long lens compression, control of depth of field, etc, not the camera. Most medium price cameras today are good enough as long as your composition is right. Lastly, auto focus: I shot a wedding on the Sony A7 Mk III, it's supposed to have great auto focus, right? It fecking hunted right when the groom was putting the ring on the bride's finger. As a matter of filmmaking skill, but also as a caution, do not rely on any auto focus when someone is paying you for your work. Unless you are shooting youtube videos, box openings etc, take pride in deciding where the camera is focused, that is a major part of the art.
Oh 100% man. Autofocus is not for every shot especially at a wedding. But it's really nice to have especially on repeatable shots. I've been manually focussing for years and can do it whenever I need to but it's nice not to have to for some moments or to just be able to see a moment happening and hit record as you're bringing the camera to eye level and it's already locked on before you'd even have a chance to start manually focussing. It's clutch in those scenarios. I agree with most of what you were saying though. The original s5 is great.

I use a harness and carry the two bodies one with an 85 and the other 35 on that harness. When I need to use a gimbal I take the 35 off the harness and put it on the gimbal.
Hello. Thank you for your honest review! Would you recommend what the minimum variety of lens do I need as a somebody who wants to start filming weddings? I have already 50mm 1.8 prime and 85mm 1.8 prime. What else would you recommend to get as a beginner videographer? Thank you !
You could do a lot with what you have with a 50 and an 85. The main lenses I use during the day are a 35 and 85 but during ceremony and speeches I also use a 70-200 on one camera for those close up shots while being able to keep my distance. A good 24-70 is always useful too. If you had only one camera a 24-70 is the most versatile lens you can use
About 3 seconds. But that’s only after it’s been switched off….when you’ve been using it but leave it switched on but don’t use it for a while it goes to sleep, but starts immediately when touching the shutter button.
Thanks for mentioning focus peaking. You're right. It's much better on the S5II, and it was horrible on the S1, the S1H---unusable. And it's great that we can now punch in while recording---a great new feature, that I loved in my Fuji X-T4. At least someone is concerned about those of us who love to manual focus to get more cinematic looks.

@@RoryandCasey Thats all good i decided to go with the sony a7siii just because of the 4k 60 no crop and better low light, do you think its a good choice?

Why would you turn off the camera in the middle of wedding ? I think it best not to miss the "moment" by have plenty of back batteries. That is what I do and never miss "moments" at weddings. Thank you.
I would say it's definitely worth it for the autofocus. I'm using the AF is so many scenarios where I wouldn't have before and it's letting me focus more on story telling and composition and worrying less about focus. It's not perfect but understanding it's limitations helps me know when to switch back to MF
Hey thank you for this great real world information on the S5ii ! :) Recommendation: add video chapters, so it is easier to click through the video straight to the most interesting parts. (also increases ctr)
I have the same problem as you and even the AF-C mode when starting to press the focus button is slower than other camera brands. Hopefully in the upcoming firmware update lumix will fix and add compressed and uncompressed RAW shooting modes to be able to choose for even higher image file quality. Lumix's image file is very beautiful and flattering. Hopefully panasonic listens and somehow they can fix these in a firmware fix. A sony alpha camera user like me from the a7m4 generation switched to lumix s5ii also because I want to experience the new things that the company brings, hope panasonic can improve its AF to remove the prejudice that the camera company has traditionally slow focus.
still mft here, I am looking to upgrade from gh5 and bpcc4K? S5 II, or should I go for GH6? Lenses is the problem... Also I shoot everything in log/BRAW. Is the S5 II OK for skin tones compared to blackmagic/canon/sony?
If you're heavily invested in MFT lenses and you don't need autofocus then the gh6 is a beast of a camera you can't go wrong with it. S5 will have better low light performance and better autofocus.
@@RoryandCasey thank you for your answer. Even without (useable) continuous autofocus, GH6 still seems impressive! Though, there are a lot of used cinema camera's on the market today...
For me the bad is the aggressive sharpening and detail smoothing compared to the S1 and S5. I crop a lot so I noticed this immediatly. Sure if you don't crop you can't see it in my opinion it's the main point of high resolution modes.
@@RoryandCasey Even when the NR is set at -5 there are still too much noise reduction and details filtering on the S5II (video)standard profiles, the difference is huge compared to the S5, I made some videos about the issue.
oh really? I have been using syncroscan at 5.9k and it works fine. I'll go back and test at other resolutions and frame rates! I have two main issues with recording straight to my ninja. The biggest one is that you lose the ability to dual record which is huge for weddings. My other issue is that it is complete overkill for what I do. If I'm recording for a corporate job that might end up on broadcast TV then yeah I'll 100% be shooting prores raw on the Ninja, but for real estate, weddings, etc it's not worth the massive file sizes for me. Of course others might have a different opinion but I can only speak for my workflow.
I can confirm the S5II is less sharp, it uses more sharpening by default and more noise reduction with most profiles, low light details look mushy compared to the S5, almost like the 4K is upscaled from a lower resolution. I made some videos about this issue. V-Log is better but not the best profile for low light.
Hi Rory, many thanks for another very instructing video, very useful for any S5II recent buyer like. I had already followed your setup video and taken a lot inspiration from it. I also really like your current video listing the + and the - of this camera and fully agreed to your points, in many cases you put on words somethings like slow time to switch on which I noticed but was still unclear. I very much like the gentle and factual way you highlight the required improvements, I hope that some of the Panasonic survey guys are reading your comments.... Looking forward on next videos ...
fingers crossed someone takes notice of some of these issues! Thanks for watching and the kind words too. I've tried doing the 'flashy' youtube thing in the past but honestly I enjoy just creating content that is going to help some people out without all the bells and whistles that other youtubers are doing... glad you enjoy the more basic laid back approach
muchas gracias you win a suscritor , love review like this . very pro and I can see you now what you talking about and this is very important more for the UA-cam hahahah . thank you
If Sony want to send me one I’d be more than happy to! I could only compare based on the stats sheet and the fact the new Sony only has a single card slot is enough for me to rule it out without looking any further.
Have had mine for a month an very much agree with all your points. For me the biggest positive coming from Sony is the IBIS, it just so buttery smooth. On the AF I would say it is reliable, you just have to be a bit more intentional with it, given certain situations, where as the Sony is more plug-and-play, but it’s not perfect either, and the manual focusing features are way better than Sony, so it kind’a balances out.
100% agree. I think once there are a couple of firmware updates though the af will be killer. The software tracked and wanted to grab the right face in the original s5 so if they can bring that over to af that is rock solid they are going to have a combo that honestly will do anything I could ever want!
There's a couple of things that are not great and definitely need to be looked at by Panasonic's engineering team but nothing that can't be fixed with firmware
@@FrankJoseph911 haha I get that... UA-cam is a playground of clickbait and sponsored videos. I haven't used a sony camera in a long time. I've had associates shoot for me on sony in a few weddings over the last few years and the colours are not good. I'm not loyal to any brand, over the years I've shot panasonic, sony, canon, fuji, Nikon and for what I do with my workflow I've landed on and am very happy with Panasonic. I'm not at all sponsored, endorsed or given anything by panasonic, I just like their stuff (though if panasonic are reading this my inbox is always open)

I know exactly what you know! I haven't heard any rumours yet but it would make sense that something would be in the pipeline. 4k 60 full frame isn't a deal breaker for me. I think people get too caught up in the full frame 'look'. Have to remember most cinema cameras are still s35

Has anyone seen an official statement about the autofocus not working in the modes you mentioned? I think if they mess this one up it would really harm their image as a company :(.
I just purchased two s5ii’s after owning an S1H and an S5. I film weddings and talking head videos so the autofocus alone was worth the switch. Also like that the s5ii doesn’t have a record limit. I’d be interested in seeing more s5ii wedding related content if that’s something you’d consider doing a video for. Would like to see the autofocus settings you use and how they perform. thanks for watching! I'll add those videos to my list of ideas! I'm going to try to make more videos this year! Yeah the lack of record limit for interviews is amazing. It doesn't bother me too much in weddings as most australian wedding ceremonies only go for about 20mins but it is nice to just keep rolling on speeches.
Honestly the biggest plus for the S5 ii is the autofocus. The biggest plus for the S1H is actually the AA filter which helps stop moire. You can't go wrong with either.

I use a harness and carry the two bodies one with an 85 and the other 35 on that harness. When I need to use a gimbal I take the 35 off the harness and put it on the gimbal.
During the actual ceremony everything is on tripods and monopods
To lock the focus, press the shutter button halfway and the yellow box will become green.
Agree that the loss of detection modes with an HDMI monitor is a HUGE issue. It was very misleading in how that was advertised
My hope is that it will follow in a future firmware update.
@@RoryandCasey has it been fixed now? or more or less the same?
Did you already try ActiveTrack 3.0 without RavenEye?
@@RoryandCasey thank you 🙏
How many seconds does it take to start up?
About 3 seconds. But that’s only after it’s been switched off….when you’ve been using it but leave it switched on but don’t use it for a while it goes to sleep, but starts immediately when touching the shutter button.
Thanks for mentioning focus peaking. You're right. It's much better on the S5II, and it was horrible on the S1, the S1H---unusable. And it's great that we can now punch in while recording---a great new feature, that I loved in my Fuji X-T4.
At least someone is concerned about those of us who love to manual focus to get more cinematic looks.
can you send me a link so i can see your realestate videos you shot with the s5ii please mate
Hey mate! About 4-5 months ago I actually shut down the real estate component of my business purely because I was getting too busy with other projects. Those houses have long since sold so the listings aren't available anymore unfortunately. If you get in touch via our instagram I can send you a few links for examples that are unlisted videos.
@@RoryandCasey Thats all good i decided to go with the sony a7siii just because of the 4k 60 no crop and better low light, do you think its a good choice?
@@edi18912 Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the new cameras. They all have their positives and negatives. I'm sure you'll be happy with the Sony for years to come!
Ive also had the same monitor issue
Have you noticed any moire in your videos shooting with this camera?
what memory card did you use for s5ii to take and record 4k video
Why would you turn off the camera in the middle of wedding ? I think it best not to miss the "moment" by have plenty of back batteries. That is what I do and never miss "moments" at weddings. Thank you.
Very good review and very helpful. Appreciate 🙂
I guess it was always habit as the original s5 was on by the time I raised it up. Can’t do that anymore with the s5ii
Would you say the autofocus is still worth the upgrade? I’m using the original S5 for weddings and by the sound of it you still can’t rely on it?
I would say it's definitely worth it for the autofocus. I'm using the AF is so many scenarios where I wouldn't have before and it's letting me focus more on story telling and composition and worrying less about focus. It's not perfect but understanding it's limitations helps me know when to switch back to MF
Thanx my G!!
Glad you found it helpful!
Hey thank you for this great real world information on the S5ii ! :) Recommendation: add video chapters, so it is easier to click through the video straight to the most interesting parts. (also increases ctr)
Thanks mate! Yes you're right I just forgot to add the chapters in!
@@RoryandCasey oh okay great!
A sony alpha camera user like me from the a7m4 generation switched to lumix s5ii also because I want to experience the new things that the company brings, hope panasonic can improve its AF to remove the prejudice that the camera company has traditionally slow focus.
any updates ?
I between 6k pro black magic or s5llx , wich camera is better in quality for music videos weddings and comerciales ,
Both are great cameras but both are very different. If I had both I’d take the s5 to weddings and the black magic to music video and commercials.
still mft here, I am looking to upgrade from gh5 and bpcc4K?
You can turn all that down though but I agree. Most new cameras are over sharpened.
@@RoryandCasey Even when the NR is set at -5 there are still too much noise reduction and details filtering on the S5II (video)standard profiles, the difference is huge compared to the S5, I made some videos about the issue.
You should see how “fast” is Sony VENICE when you power it ON :)))
So, how many seconds is the startup time?
I'll time it after Easter and let you know!
Recording on Atomos ninja would solve some issues except Af .only some modes work w syncro scan i think. Great Review. Thank you
Sounds good . Intresting. Thank you
Can you confirm the 4K footage out of S5 m2 is slightly less sharp than out of S5 m1?!
I haven't noticed that to be honest. If you noticed it you'd really have to be pixel peeping. I'm not seeing any difference generally.
I've tried doing the 'flashy' youtube thing in the past but honestly I enjoy just creating content that is going to help some people out without all the bells and whistles that other youtubers are doing... glad you enjoy the more basic laid back approach
muchas gracias you win a suscritor , love review like this . very pro and I can see you now what you talking about and this is very important more for the UA-cam hahahah . thank you
Can you compare to new Sony zv e1?
If Sony want to send me one I’d be more than happy to! I could only compare based on the stats sheet and the fact the new Sony only has a single card slot is enough for me to rule it out without looking any further.
@@RoryandCasey can you use lumix s5ii as a webcam in 4k? Without something like a cam link?
I’m not 100% sure I haven’t tried! If you can find it in the specs then you should be able to
Batteries recently sucks. Comparing to GH4 it’s like night and day.
@@RoryandCasey I pray firmware gives us 5.9k at 48fps or 60fps lol 😂
I haven’t watched this video…. YET.
I will. But I cannot imagine much will be bad. Certainly not seriously wrong or bad. I expect.
There's a couple of things that are not great and definitely need to be looked at by Panasonic's engineering team but nothing that can't be fixed with firmware
@@RoryandCasey Let me watch your video now. I'm imagining you are a SONY honk who is pimping their shit. I'll watch and we shall see.
@@RoryandCasey Okay. I watched it. You aren't overly harsh. Losing AF in 6k was widely reported BEFORE the February release. Now, I don't know if it was marketed to you BEFORE that .... but the general public knew before the sales launch.
Yeah I don't want to be harsh. There's a few annoying things but I feel like panny can fix most of it in firmware.
I just noticed you are using color lab AI.. 😃
That's actually Davinci open on my laptop in the background. The UI is very similar though from what I've seen.
@@RoryandCasey ohhk.. sorry my bad. But you have put a nice video about S5M2. I was thinking to buy it (coming from fuji). But I would rather wait for 4K 60 no crop. Is there anything coming like S1M2 or S1HM2
I know exactly what you know! I haven't heard any rumours yet but it would make sense that something would be in the pipeline. 4k 60 full frame isn't a deal breaker for me. I think people get too caught up in the full frame 'look'. Have to remember most cinema cameras are still s35
@@RoryandCasey true.. 👍
@@RoryandCasey what’s you thought on S5M2X? If you can make a video about the improvements should be done in X-model, that would be great. Hopefully Panasonic guys, listen to you and make improvements. 🙏
Has anyone seen an official statement about the autofocus not working in the modes you mentioned? I think if they mess this one up it would really harm their image as a company :(.
I haven't seen anything official. I know panasonic are aware of it. My hope is that they address it in future firmware.
What about face eye af? Would that keep it from locking on to an arm
It might but I don't really want to be constantly switching af modes during the day at a wedding.
I know you touched on it on this video but a deep dive on the subject would be 👌. Thank you for all you do 🙏.
thanks for watching!
I’m considering buying a used S1H instead of the S5ii. What do you miss or think the S1H does better than the S5ii?
Honestly the biggest plus for the S5 ii is the autofocus. The biggest plus for the S1H is actually the AA filter which helps stop moire. You can't go wrong with either.
@@RoryandCasey Thanks for the reply. I’m switching from Z Cams with MF so having the AF in the S1 and S5 (that I now have) was beneficial mainly when using on a gimbal. I like the full control with MF so really trying to find reasons to go with S5ii since I also do weddings. What situations on a wedding do you find the AF most useful?
If I film myself playing guitar will it be able to focus on my face and hands, guitar at the same time? 🥲
synchroscan
Synchroscan is amazing but really not that new for Panasonic. They dropped the ball by not having it in the s5 but the S1h and even the gh5 had it
