Kleiber finishing a phrase in the existing tempo and style with one hand while simultaneously prepping the next phrase in a new tempo and style. Both done impeccably. It’s easy to forget how hard that is because he makes it look so easy.

Preparation is everything. The conducting of the actual performance is just to get the orchestra to remember what was prepared and not actually react to what the conductor is showing them.
I was repeatedly attending his performance of Die Fledermaus between 1983 and 1988, perhaps 4 times. Every time his way of conducting the orchestra and singers was phenomenal. Weikl and Popp were among the singers.
Kleiber was truly a very talented conductor, always searching for that especial sound, transparent, elegant but full of expression and nobility. It is always evident that the works were much rehearsed but he still managed to give the performances (and even the recordings) that freshness and cheek that are also heard in this sparkling Fledermaus overture. Close your eyes and it seems he is conducting the New Year's Concert, right?

It is an arrangement Kleiber used ONLY for opera. For concert performances, he insisted on having the second violins at his right, opposite the firsts, with the violas, celli and winds in the center. Probably there wasn't room to fit that arrangement into a cramped orchestra pit.

He loved Bavarian State Orchestra. but he once demanded a fully loaded Audi and his fees from them! They did and he played! He was ways in pain Muti said. Never really sick And never really well! my guess is fibromyalgia and it's a good one, I watched my erratic dad produce more radio then any man in history and he had it, as do I, so I know what it looks like! I think Judy Garland and Oscar Levant had it they had pain and discomfort all the time, not surprising they loved pills! You will do anything to allay pain that never leaves you! I believe Stanka was his magic she held him together he killed himself shortly after she died!
So they only recorded the Overture? Shame on the Rai ! Yes, this orchestra REALLY understood his every gesture because it was his home band. One could only wish, in hindsight, that he could have dealt with the politics of an even grander orchestra to achieve such seamless results. (Berlin, Vienna or Concertgebouw come to mind.....) These people play their heart out for him.
This is the overture from the complete performance released by DGG on DVD and still available today.. Yes, Kleiber had a very close relationship with this orchestra (he once called them "our sweet Bavarian band"). But he worked with all the other orchestras listed here, with distinction. His videos of Beethoven's 4th and 7th with Concertgebouw and his New Years Day concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic are on DVD and online. As for the Berlin Philharmonic, when von Karajan stepped down as conductor, the orchestra invited Kleiber to become the next music director, but Kleiber declined, and the BPO turned to Abbado instead.
