What I found most useful was sparring with the right person (someone who doesn't want to knock your head off) and whatever you do don't turn your back. I found with a lot of new guys they turn their backs when they get hit flush. Closing your eyes doesn't make the monsters go away. Great video man, keep it up.

I had my first sparring session yesterday and I definitely achieved the first goal of wanting to spar again, it was the most fun I've had in years, although I'm sure I didn't breathe that much and I definitely put my head down more than once under the heat! These were the things that were weird/unexpected for me: 1) It seems impossible to find openings. The opponent's tight guard combined with the large size of sparring gloves didn't seem to leave much of a target to go for. 2) Blocking punches was more tiring than throwing them. Maybe this is because I tensed up so much when getting hit, but covering up/blocking seemed to be draining the life out of me. 3) My hands and arms clashed a lot with my opponents as we both tried to throw punches at the same time. This made me feel like I was trying to throw punches underwater sometimes as they kept getting slowed down. It also threw my balance and timing off a lot. 4) This might seem obvious, but judging the distance of the opponent was different compared to a bag because they kept moving! Either I was straight missing, which was disconcerting, or they were blocking/moving in on me, which sort of crowded my punches so I couldn't get anywhere near full extension. 5) There seemed to be a big psychological component. I was getting subjected to a fair bit of heat and I felt like opponents were being more offensive because they knew they could get away with it as I couldn't give them much back. But then when I landed a few lucky counter shots (I even hit one dude with a close range uppercut by totally fluke haha) my man seemed to ease off a bit. I felt like you need to make people respect you or you'll get steam rolled. 6) I don't have a killer instinct (yet!). The mentality of attacking someone just isn't that ingrained in me. It almost seemed weird to fight somebody that I get one well with. JEMS dude, seriously, my punches were clashing so much, I dont get how in boxing it ends up looking so flush. I also had a problem actually with knowing when my blocks were even successful. All it would feel like was that I'm still getting hit and so I'd back off still when I could have maybe came in with a counter to the body or slipped the guy.

The biggest tip I have for new guys is to breathe when they're getting hit, not just when they are throwing. It's really easy to get tense and not breathe when someone is swarming you, but it's such a big mistake, because they're breathing and you're not. You're tiring yourself out when they're doing all the work.

When I had my first sparring session, I was pretty stunned when I got a hit to the head. Though I tried to mentally prepare to get hit, when that cross-connected, I lost focus and any plan I had. Just covered up and pretty much ran backwards, luckily my partner knew it was my first time and back off, taking it easy on me.
That not happened with me that nigga started hard sparing and landed a punch in chin and I got knocked 😢 I thought he was doing light so I didn't focused on tightening my chin and I didn't had mouthguard too
I just had my first sparring session today and I watched this video three times in preparation and I would never have done so well without it! Got to throw the left hook a few times, kept my eyes up, and didn't forget to breath! Thank you!!! Great video

A big hurdle for me was getting past my brain. I was always over thinking everything and getting popped in the face in return 😂 I really think it's best to trust your training, try to have faith in your technique and just let it happen. Don't overthink it. Oh, and don't eat right before you spar. Haha
There were several pairs sparring at once on the mat. The coach can't watch us all at once. I guess that the big difference between an MMA class being taught by one coach and maybe one assistant vs two guys in a ring with all eyes on them. Can't say anything bad about my instructors. They are incredible, but I get what you're saying completely.
chauncey phillips when I am sparring during a PT session, he won't necessarily stop us, but he will definitely yell out stuff to me like "quit slipping to the same side", "guard yourself", "get inside" etc etc. but if I'm with a group of people sparring, there's no one really coaching. But that's why it's ideal to work with someone who really knows what you are doing and you can work together that way.

Troo Papi . I booked my local boxing gym coach for an individual session and asked him to start me on light sparring with him. That ways he can pause and coach me as I move along. Will update if anyone is interested in finding out.
Great stuff as always! What I’ve found useful in sparring is staying relaxed as much as possible, especially with my punches. I find when I’m relaxed and I’m just firing light punches, my connection rate is much higher! When I tense up and want to throw a bomb, the tension slows my punch down and it becomes so telepathic that my opponent could read it from a mile away. So keep it light and relaxed 👍👍
Best tips on youtube thanks. Wish I'd watched this one before my first sparring today. The good thing is we only went lightly and I really enjoyed it, despite not being very good. I found myself closing my eyes too much and throwing shots at random. Lots to take away and work on.
For me it's key to relax and remember to keep your hands up and bring them back to your face when your done punching. Also remaining calm when your in the pocket will help tremendously and will come with more time in the ring.
For me, i have to be cocky. It's the only way my body and mind stays relaxed in any situation. And to anyone having their first sparring session, you're going to get whacked very hard, and my advice is to have the mentality of "come back, i want some more" when you get hit. Also, if you manage to either slip or roll a punch, don't sit back and marvel at the fact that you made the other person miss because while you're doing that, there's usually a beautiful right hand about an inch from your face.

Hey mate, great advice. From my own experience I'd say that following a more experienced boxers rhytm is highly essential for your first sparring session. Dance with him/her and keep calm and composed. Follow the more experienced boxers rhytm and be ready to cover when he/she is breaking it and strikes. Do not be afraid to clinch if you got the opportunity, I rarely see beginers clinch. Especially if someone starts to flurry you - it's highly effective to clinch to shut down the flurry. First sparring session last night. Sparred three different guys for a minute at a time with good rest in between whilst we watched the other more experienced guys go at it. Once I got over the initial shock of being hit in the head, the next thing was learning really quickly to keep those hands up to keep it from happening again. Next was keeping distance & trying to get out the way of punches coming at me. Need to work on some head movement next & you're very right about the breathing thing!!! Overall it was a great experience & i'm keen to get back in there to learn more. Great videos, thanks.

Hardest thing for me was and still is to keep the eyes on target and open, even when you get hit. The natural reaction is to close them, which prohibits you from seeing what is coming at you afterwards. Also, exhale when you punch and vary the timing of punches.
Hey, I've seen a few of your videos already and they are great. Your tutorials are perfect and done at the right pace for a beginner boxer like myself that has recently just started sparring to digest. I had my first sparring session last night and was pretty nervous after seeing the guys before me were just going at each other pretty brutally. I got hit in the face a few times which kinda gave me a wake up call but I finished knowing that there was more work to do. I'm definitely going to refer to your videos anyhow . Good stuff!

#1 tip for anyone's first sparring session - KEEP YOUR HANDS UP. Can't tell you how many times I've seen guys get tagged over and over in sparring because they developed terrible habits on the bag, working mitts, etc. They THOUGHT they were keeping their hands up all that time, but they weren't. You learn very quickly what it means to keep your hands up in that first session haha.

some great tips in here, the relaxing and a straight back is important as well , also doing some bag work or pad work with a mouthguard is good preparation to get your breathing right for sparring.
I've been to EXPBoxing, been to Fighttips, been to some random boxing channels JT Van V is the best channel that I've been on. Had my first sparring session last night! It was fast & furious ;) The pace and being hit is something new! What I’ll take from it is get in, get out stick and move and keep my head from being a sitting target!
First sparring session I went against the gym owner's son which was a pro boxer, not famous or anything like that but obviously a lot better than me (3month novice). I recall closing my eyes and turning away. Super scary at first. Got jacked up ha, went home shaking and super tensed up as if my body was in shock. Never experienced that before. Awesome stuff once more experienced.
I also got my ass whooped yesterday I only trained 3 days and I sparred my coach brother tell me did u get better because I don’t know what to do should i quit
I had my first sparring session today I fought with two different opponents While fighting the first one...I faced the problem that he was leaning back all the time but I landed 4-5 significant punches and he landed like 2-3 but when he was leaning back all the time.....it was very difficult for me to hit him With the second one...I got lucky I restrained him in a corner and landed almost all combinations and that dude started bleeding by his nose ... To be honest I didn't feel good after seeing him bleeding but that's boxing ....you hit and you get hit.
The first guy shouldn’t lean back because if you end up connecting he will be off balance and just fall so I’d use that as your advantage just aim for body shots and faint like you’re going for another body shot and get him with an unexpected hook or jab to his face
Omg I wish I had have seen this before... I had my first sparring today and I’d been injured all week so I came back today and was just told that we are sparring was a crazy experience.
It is good to be simplistic with your combos because most beginner sparrers are thinking of just hitting instead of what I was going for which was to practice combos and set ups.

My friend and i just had our first sparring session off the devil lettuce. It was the craziest thing ive ever done. We ended up getting a crowd. I learned so much. It looked like fight club
I have been boxing for years, but because of the birth of my son and irregular hours at work I have been out for almost a full year. Gonna start again next year when I finaly have a 9 to 5 job. I was looking at videos in which I can look at tips on how to prepare myself for not just the sparring but how to engage with the opponent with my fight day looming on the 21st June and I have finally found the right channel in this one. Your tips will defo help me with my sparring even though it's like my 5th one with a partner that I can trust although I have the size advantage and he has the speed advantage. Spot on tips. I’ve had a couple sessions and have noticed looking down a lot and also not moving after combos. Tonight I went in there with no warm up either and definitely felt the difference...gotta be loose. Thanks for the tips!
Great stuff! Today I had my first sparring session. I got plastered the first minute since my opponent was experienced and didn't show mercy when he saw my face uncovered. He didn't go with full force though, no hard feelings, otherwise my nose would be broken, but I really felt it (not once). After the first hits I wasn't scared and I wasn't angry, I was just so confused! My response was a mix of instinct, the feedback that I got from the background and the limited training that I had. Overall a good experience, but not great. I didn't really get the time to loosen up and find my steps. In the first round I felt like a punchbag. The second round was much better since the coach told my opponent to go easy on me, so I could relax. I didn't go for a third round since I was out of breath and I feared that if I pressed my luck I might lose a tooth or break my nose. Overall I would have preferred that the first round would be more tagging so I could loosen up, find my stance and get the feeling of an immediate response. Then on the second round he could go harder so that I could feel a somewhat more realistic pressure. I loved what you said about not judging ourselves and that the first sparring session is an experience and not an assessment. The session was a success, I will do it again and I got to my home safe and sound. A very humbling experience overall. To my fellow newbies in the sport, the bag will never hit you back so you have the time to relax gain composure and land some hard punches... your opponent will not give you that time. Take a step back, cover like crazy and don't be ashamed to let it for another day if you believe you are risking injury. I'm not an athlete, I'm just doing this for the exercise and the experience. Leave your ego at the door and make sure you get to your place unharmed. The technique, the power and the speed will come (I hope) no need to rush it.

This is an amazing insight. Thank you so much !!! In 52 y/o and i sparres for the first time last with guys 20, 30 years younger with experience. I felt alot of anxiety, especially after getting rocked a few times. I was at times afraid to lwt my hands go after ge tting hit and it messed with me. I have to get acclimated in taking shots and learn to relax in that situations. I almost couldnt go back for a second round but i did. All in all, i survived 3 rounds. It wasnt easy for me at all, but im going to continue because i love it.
The problem with most boxing gyms is they’ll put you with someone who’s good but not that good like maybe 1-2 fights, and have them beat the brakes off you. Seen that happen too many times and then they don’t wanna come back. Where I went did that and I never went back, but then I joined an mma gym and the trainer has all the beginners go light and then build up, spar harder and harder. That’s the way you gotta do it and he just so happens to have the best mma gym within a 10 mile radius🤷♂️
I have my 2nd sparring session on sunday and we both dont have any boxing experience or training in gym, but i always watch your video, the training how to punch, counter and combination, i always practice it. Hope it works in my next fight. im from philippines by the way.
Tip: Don't be afraid to put your hands out, instead of worrying about what they throw and anticipating, make them worry about what you can do.

Great stuff as always! What I’ve found useful in sparring is staying relaxed as much as possible, especially with my punches. I find when I’m relaxed and I’m just firing light punches, my connection rate is much higher! When I tense up and want to throw a bomb, the tension slows my punch down and it becomes so telepathic that my opponent could read it from a mile away. So keep it light and relaxed 👍👍
Best tips on youtube thanks. Wish I'd watched this one before my first sparring today. The good thing is we only went lightly and I really enjoyed it, despite not being very good. I found myself closing my eyes too much and throwing shots at random. Lots to take away and work on.
plus 1. try to step beyond the nearest(jab) opponets hand. 2 dont getting tight, try to relax. 3. dont stay, always move! 4. endurence is number 1.
For me it's key to relax and remember to keep your hands up and bring them back to your face when your done punching. Also remaining calm when your in the pocket will help tremendously and will come with more time in the ring.

For me, i have to be cocky. It's the only way my body and mind stays relaxed in any situation. And to anyone having their first sparring session, you're going to get whacked very hard, and my advice is to have the mentality of "come back, i want some more" when you get hit. Also, if you manage to either slip or roll a punch, don't sit back and marvel at the fact that you made the other person miss because while you're doing that, there's usually a beautiful right hand about an inch from your face.

Hey mate, great advice. From my own experience I'd say that following a more experienced boxers rhytm is highly essential for your first sparring session. Dance with him/her and keep calm and composed. Follow the more experienced boxers rhytm and be ready to cover when he/she is breaking it and strikes.
Do not be afraid to clinch if you got the opportunity, I rarely see beginers clinch. Especially if someone starts to flurry you - it's highly effective to clinch to shut down the flurry.

First sparring session last night. Sparred three different guys for a minute at a time with good rest in between whilst we watched the other more experienced guys go at it. Once I got over the initial shock of being hit in the head, the next thing was learning really quickly to keep those hands up to keep it from happening again. Next was keeping distance & trying to get out the way of punches coming at me. Need to work on some head movement next & you're very right about the breathing thing!!! Overall it was a great experience & i'm keen to get back in there to learn more. Great videos, thanks.

Hardest thing for me was and still is to keep the eyes on target and open, even when you get hit. The natural reaction is to close them, which prohibits you from seeing what is coming at you afterwards. Also, exhale when you punch and vary the timing of punches.
I’ve sparred a lot in the last two years. This is a great video. It reminded me of some of the basics I’ve been forgetting lately. Great video.

Hey, I've seen a few of your videos already and they are great. Your tutorials are perfect and done at the right pace for a beginner boxer like myself that has recently just started sparring to digest. I had my first sparring session last night and was pretty nervous after seeing the guys before me were just going at each other pretty brutally. I got hit in the face a few times which kinda gave me a wake up call but I finished knowing that there was more work to do. I'm definitely going to refer to your videos anyhow . Good stuff!

I have my first "Supervised" sparring session tomorrow . My coach says that I have good enought foot work and fundamentals for a beginner(all thanks to your content), but 0 defense since i've been training alone for 8 months.

#1 tip for anyone's first sparring session - KEEP YOUR HANDS UP. Can't tell you how many times I've seen guys get tagged over and over in sparring because they developed terrible habits on the bag, working mitts, etc. They THOUGHT they were keeping their hands up all that time, but they weren't. You learn very quickly what it means to keep your hands up in that first session haha.

when i was having my first spar i watched this video and thought i have to win but looking back you got it bang on its about making it to your next sparring session and not getting disheartened
some great tips in here, the relaxing and a straight back is important as well , also doing some bag work or pad work with a mouthguard is good preparation to get your breathing right for sparring.
I've been to EXPBoxing, been to Fighttips, been to some random boxing channels JT Van V is the best channel that I've been on. I have only trained for like 3 months and this channel is my go to channel when it comes to tips. Believe me, I'm always 10 steps ahead of my friend that started training with me

First sparring session I went against the gym owner's son which was a pro boxer, not famous or anything like that but obviously a lot better than me (3month novice). I recall closing my eyes and turning away. Super scary at first. Got jacked up ha, went home shaking and super tensed up as if my body was in shock. Never experienced that before. Awesome stuff once more experienced.
I also got my ass whooped yesterday I only trained 3 days and I sparred my coach brother tell me did u get better because I don’t know what to do should i quit

I had my first sparring session today I fought with two different opponents
While fighting the first one...I faced the problem that he was leaning back all the time but I landed 4-5 significant punches and he landed like 2-3 but when he was leaning back all the time.....it was very difficult for me to hit him
With the second one...I got lucky I restrained him in a corner and landed almost all combinations and that dude started bleeding by his nose ...
To be honest I didn't feel good after seeing him bleeding but that's boxing ....you hit and you get hit.
with the guy who kept leaning back i would aim for his body
The first guy shouldn’t lean back because if you end up connecting he will be off balance and just fall so I’d use that as your advantage just aim for body shots and faint like you’re going for another body shot and get him with an unexpected hook or jab to his face

It is good to be simplistic with your combos because most beginner sparrers are thinking of just hitting instead of what I was going for which was to practice combos and set ups.

I have been boxing for years, but because of the birth of my son and irregular hours at work I have been out for almost a full year. Gonna start again next year when I finaly have a 9 to 5 job. I was looking at videos in which I can look at tips on how to prepare myself for not just the sparring but how to engage with the opponent with my fight day looming on the 21st June and I have finally found the right channel in this one. Your tips will defo help me with my sparring even though it's like my 5th one with a partner that I can trust although I have the size advantage and he has the speed advantage. Spot on tips. I’ve had a couple sessions and have noticed looking down a lot and also not moving after combos. Tonight I went in there with no warm up either and definitely felt the difference...gotta be loose. Thanks for the tips!
Great stuff! Today I had my first sparring session. I got plastered the first minute since my opponent was experienced and didn't show mercy when he saw my face uncovered. He didn't go with full force though, no hard feelings, otherwise my nose would be broken, but I really felt it (not once). After the first hits I wasn't scared and I wasn't angry, I was just so confused! My response was a mix of instinct, the feedback that I got from the background and the limited training that I had. Overall a good experience, but not great. I didn't really get the time to loosen up and find my steps. In the first round I felt like a punchbag. The second round was much better since the coach told my opponent to go easy on me, so I could relax. I didn't go for a third round since I was out of breath and I feared that if I pressed my luck I might lose a tooth or break my nose. Overall I would have preferred that the first round would be more tagging so I could loosen up, find my stance and get the feeling of an immediate response. Then on the second round he could go harder so that I could feel a somewhat more realistic pressure. I loved what you said about not judging ourselves and that the first sparring session is an experience and not an assessment. The session was a success, I will do it again and I got to my home safe and sound. A very humbling experience overall. To my fellow newbies in the sport, the bag will never hit you back so you have the time to relax gain composure and land some hard punches... your opponent will not give you that time. Take a step back, cover like crazy and don't be ashamed to let it for another day if you believe you are risking injury. I'm not an athlete, I'm just doing this for the exercise and the experience. Leave your ego at the door and make sure you get to your place unharmed. The technique, the power and the speed will come (I hope) no need to rush it.

I felt alot of anxiety, especially after getting rocked a few times. I was at times afraid to lwt my hands go after ge tting hit and it messed with me.
I have to get acclimated in taking shots and learn to relax in that situations. I almost couldnt go back for a second round but i did. All in all, i survived 3 rounds. It wasnt easy for me at all, but im going to continue because i love it.

The problem with most boxing gyms is they’ll put you with someone who’s good but not that good like maybe 1-2 fights, and have them beat the brakes off you. Seen that happen too many times and then they don’t wanna come back. Where I went did that and I never went back, but then I joined an mma gym and the trainer has all the beginners go light and then build up, spar harder and harder. That’s the way you gotta do it and he just so happens to have the best mma gym within a 10 mile radius🤷♂️
