  • today I went under the speed to try and tackle the pcv, this was a huge PAIN IN THE ASS ... it is definitely do-able but is tricky! ... i changed out the pcv valve on the crank case cover and will be installing it back in the car as well as my new Damond Motorsports OCC!

Turbo journal bearing. You can take off your inlet to get to the turbo. You will see oil and be able to move the turbine slightly side to side but NOT forward and backward. When forward oil burns and it smokes. Let off the gas and it leaks. The pcv goes and takes the bearing with it.

Thanks. a million for showing how to get that plastic ring off.
As far as the bottom up approach...it's good to know the alternative, but...this really looks tough too. And messy. I think I'll go with the topside repair. Either way it looks like I'm in for some busted knuckles.

Hi. Did you end up putting pcv back in from the bottom or by taking manifold off? Would this video apply to 2.3 Cx-7?

RoadRoyals I tried to do it today. Took me an hour just to get the dip stick out. F this. I will try from manifold removal or just let dealer do it. They estimate two hours. Peanuts for me.

Did you clean the oil separator plastic before putting back? Did you get a new gasket for that or just used existing? Also wondering how much coolant leaked? What do you recommend to do to stop it from coming out? Attach a balloon to the end of it or wine cork?

@@RoadRoyals The 'black box' is called an oil separator. Got that from the local Mazda dealer today when I picked up the new PCV (Mazda part #L325-13-890A, $36.26 Canada). There is a gasket shown as 10-23Y (not a Mazda part #) for the 'black box'. If I can't attach the drawing it is called 'Model/Year: Mazda 3, Section: 1370BB Emission Control System (2300CC). The circular clip that holds the PCV to the 'black box' is called a Retainer (Mazda part #LF01-10-509, $10.49 Canada). I think I will order the gasket and the retainer before I start this job.

Have you guys tried the bnoon, aka jbr restrictor bolt? it's a temporary fix but it really calmed the smoking on my car down and got me through emissions. I bought mine from jbr, definitely worth it until I can afford the new turbo. I also have a similar oil leak from the turbo and bought oil return gaskets but haven't installed them yet. hopefully that's the issue.

RoadRoyals engine oil leak could be the engine coolant gasket, i bought the updated engine coolant made of metal and copper instead of just buying the gasket and using the cheap factory plastic engine coolant. common problem on mazdas.
