- Today I'm reviewing the new EFNOTE 5X drumset. This is the top of the mid-tier range from the company. It packs quite a few features for the price and is one of the better drum sets I've seen released this year. It's not perfect though, we'll talk about the good, the bad, and whether or not it's worth buying.

I'm amazed how these kits sound so warm and punchy vs the sterile sounds Yamaha and Roland have been putting out for decades and to this day

These have some of the best stock sounds out there I think. This will be replacing my alesis crimson 2 for sure
Stock sounds are just not that important unless you can add to them, triggering MIDI with VST’s give you so much more imo
I’m in the same place, going to replace my Crimson ii se with either an Efnote 5X or possibly a 7. Obviously I won’t depend on a generic computer to create your sound when you go on stage. VSTs are nice for basement drummers…

Great review, Justin! Thanks! Note that Efnote includes those black cable holders which, when properly used, keep the cymbals from rotating. Artesia has a video on how to use them for this purpose. Did you feel comfortable about the DW5000 with this kick (I am considering the same combo)?
My main concern for hard rock music is the sounds not being aggressive enough. But I’ve got drum compressors and reverbs like CLA Drums in post recording that should hopefully do the trick. I just know I played this thing once in person and couldn’t stop smiling. It was ridiculous.
My parents said I have to get all A’s this semester if I want this drum set and I have mostly all A’s

Appreciate the review. I love the look of these drums. I currently own an ATV set/module, and honestly thinking about switching, or at least buying the Hihat and module combo they offer.
Compared to ATV, the hihats seems to have better triggering. Also, the module appears to register even the softest touch for all the pads, as oppose to ATV module which just cuts off at a certain point
Looks like a nice kit. Is there an included kick drum riser? Not sure if you mentioned one.
After trying …In my opinion the preset kit sounds of this module are much better and natural than those of the Roland TD-27 module (in my opinion suck)..I

After much research I decided to buy the EFnote 5. So far really happy with my decision. I want to add after digging into the module, it’s basically really good and all the options work great. 8 channels out on usb is a real treat but I had to discover the hard way that any sounds you put on the drums as a sub layer will be automatically routed to channels 1+2 and there’s nothing you can do about it! So you have to turn it off for the purpose of recording 8 channels. You can still use layers and have 6 channels, but still channels 1+2 will act as “main” stereo out, with unwanted information on them. Maybe there’s a work around this that I couldn’t come up with. I’m using superior drummer any way so I don’t have to have the extra layers from the module, but still kinda annoying to work out sounds on the module that you can’t control properly. Still really loving the whole thing, it has great sounds and to my taste - sounds the most realistic that I could find at this price range (and above) . Tnx Justin as always I’m coming back to the best channel to get info on e drums.
Interesting that the EFNOTE cymbals look IDENTICAL to the ATV cymbals underneath - I expected similiarities, obviously, but if I didn't know it was EFNOTE I would swear it was ATV. Also, my ATV 18" ride does that vibration thing too. I couldn't remember if it did it when I first got it or if it developed, but this makes me think it's probably been like that the entire time. It can actually cause ghost triggers if I don't set it up properly. Great review!
I almost included a whole section with a direct comparison between my ATV and EF Note cymbals, but I cut it out before publishing the video. Here's the short version. The rubber feels identical and the thickness is identical between the two brands. The EF Note ride has a slightly larger bell. ATV's cable inputs are on the outside of the plastic cup under the bell, while EF Note has the cable inputs facing inward toward the cymbal stand. I've heard a rumor that both companies use the same factory to manufacture their drums.
@@65Drums The audio on the cymbal "sub" part blew my mind haha! I had to get my ear right up to it to hear it in person. It's just rubber vibrating and has never caused any mis-triggering for me. It just feels really good to play on . After I watched the vid, i put my ear up to the Roland CY-13R and it did the exact same thing. Then the Alesis 17" and it did the same thing. they just all make three different pitches due to being different sizes and densities.

Would this be a good pick up for Metal if im using mainly VSTS anyway? I was thinking of the VAD506 but this one looks good?

With this kit - do you need to buy a monitor speaker to to plug into if you don’t want to play thru headphones? Any recommendations for a good speaker? Not for playing live - just at home

I noticed that the triple cone internal triggers look exactly the same as the VAD and ATV must be the same factory I know all three are designed in Japan but are they made there or China ? And if you look close the hardware is exactly the same

I tried it. As a roland fanboy I've come to realise that there are better. The efnote has definitely been the most fluent set I've played by far. It registers instantly and feels amazing. Imo the customisability is currently pretty low with not much room for addition. I think 3 additional channels. I believe roland gear does work with it but ask a professional. The efnote is awesome in feel and sound but its also young and under developed. I ended up going with the alesis strike SE and couldn't be more happy. However in 1-2 years I will be buying the efnote for myself once its more cemented in what it wants to be (my alesis is for church - but an outstanding set and so glad I bought it over the roland td27)

Artesia announced that they will publish pricing on the individual parts in the next one or two months. I guess that should include the splash as it’s mentioned as a separate part on the Efnote website.
Hey. I need some advice. I am kinda on the lookout for a new better module. I currently use the Td4 module and custom built kit with RT30 Triggers. I just don't know what to choose. I need good quality sounds, adjustability in the sounds and kits and all that and ofc cooperation with Roland triggers. I've been looking at TD17, TD25, Strike Se module and such. But don't know if any of those are good, or if there are better.
This module should work for you but not for the hi-hat. You can buy a hi-hat/module combo at drum-tec, I believe.
How about the heads? Are they bouncy/dead? I'm guessing the EFNOTE 5 is similar...minus the 2nd floor tom and cymbal.
im fairly certain that "proprietary Hi Hat" adapter is just S Video repurposed, notice how the pins are only 4, despite the recepticle's 6 + the support pin. casing is identical to S video, i hope it is.
I wasn't saying the port doesn't exist out in the wild for other applications. I'm just saying you can't use this with any other drum module in the world.

Loved the machine gun sound test!!! Please do that more often!!! It seems the mimic pro is the only one to pass that test so far
I really appreciate how you describe your playing experience, being 6 foot, 5 inches. I’m 6’-2”, 215 lbs and I find that most things are made for an average, shorter person.
I’m still leaning towards the Roland TD-17KVX, but I’m worried that it’s promoted as a ‘compact’ kit. I’m definitely not a compact person. 😆 I may have to purchase a larger drum rack and extension cables, but if that’s all I have to do, I’ll be fine with it.
Yeah that's the thing, I make most electronic drums look smaller than they are just because of my size. But on camera it's hard to tell that I'm tall. The TD17 is great by the way, I used to own one and liked it
I have the td-17kvx and had to replace the rack, and most of the pads. only kept the 12 inch snare. I wouldn't recommend it. The tom pads are very tiny, and have a plastic ring around the inside making the strike zone even smaller
@@mabber1831 I remember those. With that dumbass ring and screws on the inside of the strike zone.
I'm not super tall (5'11), but for me the TD17KVX is a bit too small. Obviously full size drums and cymbals is ideal, but for me the TD27KV is the point where everything is just about big enough. Like the extra 2 inches on the toms really makes a difference. TD17KVX is still a good kit for a beginner/someone not wanting to invest too much.

@@analog_ape yeah 2Box modules sound great, I have gotten it to machine gun though when trying to but it’s so easy to play musically on. Just have to play it like the instrument it is.
The mimic sounds incredible as well, you get what you pay (dearly) for 😂. Roland doing it though surprised me.
I could easily gig without any machine gunning on any of them. If you ever did “the machine gun test” on a gig, FIRED.
I only came here to hear if it was good for SD3, and I got that piece of information. Even as it does sound better than any Roland module, I’d never use internal sounds. I only care about feel, trigger capabilities, and MIDI support. It looks like the kit is perfect for SD3, and it looks the part. My only unanswered question. Does it trigger better than the KV2? Should I get this instead of it? I like it more as I like the look better, but will I be happier than with the KV2?
The KV2 has better hihats, snare, and ride. Everything else matches up evenly in my opinion for triggering purposes

@@65Drumsno doubt about the ride and snare...but are the VH-14D really better hi-hats than the Efnote ones, Justin? In Thomann the Roland td27-KV2 and the Efnote 3X are almost at the same price and I'm not sure which I should pick between them (Roland has the digital pads and the durability factor, but I prefer the Efnote sounds, looks, general pad sizes and portability and also includes one extra tom and a bigger kick drum)

At 9:36 when you're talking about the cable to the hihat, that connector is not proprietary. It's an S-Video cable. You could take the hihat piece to any independent repair shop and I guarantee you'd be able to do a repair for fairly cheap.
I'm aware s-video its a very old connector, proprietary wasn't quite the right word for what I meant. I wasn't talking about reparability, but compatibility. EFNOTE is the only company in the entire E-drum industry that uses this connection, that makes their hi-hats incompatible with every other brand. So "proprietary" isn't really the right word, but It got the message across. I'm just trying to stop people from buying that pad to use with other 3rd party drum modules
@@65Drums That makes sense. Once I get my kit in hand I could create a schematic and make it open source so people can put an adapter together for regular kits :) These cables are so cheap to get where it would probably be a worthwhile endeavor.

I pay a subscription to a website called StoryBlocks for royalty free audio tracks, and video b-roll. That's where the song came from. I can't use regular songs because the Record Label's take all the money the video makes the moment you do that.
I’m really debating getting this kit but I’m a metal drummer. I’d only ever be running it into SD/EZD and never using the built in sounds. Do you see that as an issue?
Me too, man. It seems to be the best one out there, look wise and playability wise.
@ I ended up buying it lol, it comes in tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it plays for metal, but seeing as the kick as two trigger zones they for sure expected people to play double bass on it

@@farhanmunshi5581 I love the kit itself. The built in sounds are eh…there’s a single kit that’s pretty good for metal(birch wood). Both crashes are good, rides pretty good, and the splash turns into a China on this kit which lets you play breakdowns. It’s not perfect, but at least there IS an option for metal.
I’ve been having issues connecting it to ezdrummer though…I’ve been meaning to contact support. It connects for 2-3 minutes then loses all vst connection until I reconnect the usb cable. The feel of the kit(especially the ride) is amazing though.

Also, the TD27 seems to have great sound capability if you're willing to actually learn to edit the kits (as shown by Adrien Drums). Or you can purchase other people's custom kits. Not sure why Roland don't do the work themselves, but the potential is in there nonetheless.

@@TamMusician Well because SD3 beats every modules sounds. The only one that comes close, from what I understand, is the mimic pro but that's near enough the price of a good drum set by itself.
And yeh, its different if he is wanting to play live. But even then I don't think the efnotes sounds are really good enough.

An ATV snare would work (13") there are other brands I haven't tested that might fit the bill for you. Like pintech, drum tec, ect
Is it possible to turn the 14" tom to a snom?
Are you or anybody for that matter able to test if a Roland cd18 with a usb to 6.5mm adaptor would be functional on older kits? Even with reduced sensitivity the durability, 3 zone playability, and size would make it an endgame ride for my strike pro (which just broke its second ride)

Buy the efnote 5 or 5x these are the best in my opinion I've tried td 50 td27 owned 2box, mimic, td25 atv. The efnote is better then all of them

Another Roland TD17 add a china, splash, cowbell, another tom etc. I bought 2 Yamaha kits a few years ago as long as the frames match Frankenstein that stuff!! Just need a cheap 4 channel mixer to plug the 2 heads into.
I have a TD11 then in purchased a secondhand 2Box module only using the Roland for a spash & layering extra snare & kick sound. My 64Gb card is load with Ezdrummer, GGD, SD3 plus others, it sounds great.
I recently bought EFNote 3 (Yes the one you said you wouldn't buy) because it was heavily discounted (demo model). Just the pads and triggers were worth the money I paid.
I've owned bunch of Roland and Yamaha modules, as well as MiMic Pro and SuperiorDrummer 3.
I agree with most of your comments. The part I hate the most is the proprietary hi-hat connector that uses old PS2 style keyboard jack. I have ATV Hi hat, but I can't connect it. I'll just have to figure out the pinouts and make my own converter.
May be I should get a stand alone compressor and patch it into the mixer.
The 6 pin is to send power to the optical sensors. Hopefully there will be an adapter in the future. Hope you’ve done the firmware update, it vastly improves the hi hat on the 3

EFnote vs VAD is a really hard decision at first glance. But after repeated research some clear differences are found, some may be dealbreakers depending on your needs. First, the 5X smaller sizes look tiny when outfitted with real shells. They sit super low and look ridiculous. The entire kit here sits at my snare height and a few inches is not going to make up the discrepency. The module is basic and the small form factor is a plus, but some important features are missing like sample import and it only allows one pad/cymbal for expansion. The cymbals are awesome but a proprietary cable on the most beaten pad on the kit doesn't sit well with me. Then there's the wrap seam. It might not be fixable, but what they should have done is notice the mismatch and go with a wrap without a pattern. If this was priced at $2,500 like the Strike Pro I think it would be worth it, but not at nearly $4K. Another $1K and you have a VAD 506 with a complete module, 3 AUX for expansion, larger shell sizes, two rack toms (I'm not into the be bop setup), 28 tracks of USB recording, position sensing snare, and proven reliability. EFnote 7 is better, but by that time you're in Roland territory. I do like EFnote and want them to succeed. They are great for keeping Roland's prices in check. I just need a bit more.
The VAD also has the digital ride and snare (I know you mentioned positional sensing on the snare), with the ability to add the digital hi hats. So you get the best ride and snare, and if you want the best hi hat, in the business (not that efnotes pads aren't good). You also get a lot more editing options (if you look at someone like Adrien Drums, it is amazing how much better you can make the built- in sounds). Another thing is that Roland generally has good resell value- I would assume even moreso against a relatively unknown brand like efnote. And then you have the module screen- I almost don't want to buy the efnote just because of the screen, I think it would just drive me insane 😂
Don't get me wrong, I think the 5x is still a good kit. But for its price, like you say, I think you're probably better off going for the VAD. Especially in the UK where the prices seem to be even closer (approx £3,200 for 5x, £3,500 for VAD506).
Needs at least a 20" bass drum. Throws the look of the whole kit off.
Hi, I've got a 5x, I've got an issue setting the Hi-Hats, can't get them close enough and sometimes they get close randomly :(
I believe you can auto calibrate them in the trigger settings.

I have a 2 Box module with Ezdrummer loaded on to a 64Gb card. No need for a laptop to play Ezdrummer, GGD, SD3 plus others.
Nice kit but the module screen screams don’t buy for me.

Hmmmm, I’m a bit of a “all or nothing” mindset on this…… if I was going the acoustic style edrum kit, I’d want near to full size. When it’s “miniature” size like this it just looks like a toy ???? I’d prefer the standard non-acoustic edrum kit over this, but if I had a choice, I’d go a full/near size acoustic style edrums. Other than it’s size and presence, it’s pretty cool.
Then there's always the EFNote 7, bigger sizes and bigger price tag

This is definitely the most realistic sounding Electronic Kit I’ve heard, but the only thing I don’t like about it is the sound module, the screen reminds me of an old generation E-Book Reader!,

I can't remember the name. It's from Storyblocks, you have to pay like $200 a year to access the song library.
Opinion:
This kit clearly is the most acoustic driven E-Kit on the market. So acoustic the module doesn’t even give you that many options to magically change your kit. Want true EQ? Want true audio effects such as eco/reverb/compression/flange? Get the hardware. This is by far the best electric drum kit out there.
No way to import sounds? (Again this is an opinion comment guys) if you need to import sounds this isn’t your kit. The fact you have USB/MIDI out means you have every sound you ever needed at your fingertips. If you’re buying this kit you definitely have a Macintosh at home. Doesn’t even need to be new. Free garage band with every drum sound you need.
TL;DR: This kit is aimed at acoustic players who need/want the benefits of an electric kit without sacrificing their acoustic nature.
The price is of the set for a hybrid acoustic looking set,$3800.00 is that bad,it's a bit pricey but still cheaper than gewa

I agree, but they did just announced the EFNOTE 7 series of drums with larger shell sizes. But of course the tradeoff is that it's more expensive

While I kind of like the Fnote stuff. It looks like a kids sized set. I get the whole look like an acoustic set. But these look TOO small in my opinion.
Well they just introduced the EFNOTE 7X flagship that has bigger sizes. There’s always Roland’s VAD700 series. Or even custom builders like Drumec, Jobeky, and Field.
They really goofed with that 18 inch bass. Makes the whole set look weird.
