In a recent commander game I had a Birds of Paradise get killed by an honest to goodness Lightning Bolt. As a pioneer/commander player it was the first time I had seen this iconic line of play in person.

I feel that Fire Blast from Visions should've been discussed here. It pretty much set the bar very high for free burn spells and is still being played in Legacy and occasionally in Vintage.
As a newer player (5-6 years) I was pretty surprised to see so much color variety in early burn spells. Magic Arcanum digging deep and providing excellent content again. Thanks guys! Now all I need to do is become wealthy so I can afford some of those cards.

Also I know it's not groundbreaking or anything but I think Skullcrack is the iconic burn spell for "damage can't be prevented". It's the closest thing we've ever got to a lightning bolt for 2 mana value because you're essentially paying one generic to be like "no, really - take three"

I think we are going to see the following two mechanics come up in 1. Something themed to tribal hate. Probably a burn card that does extra damage if it targets a transformed creature or if the creature has lifelink 2. Anti-lifegain burn. Something that hits your opponent for double the life they gained this turn

I would like to see Forgotten Realms add "Meteor Storm" after the 9th level D & D spell of the same name. Remember "Meteor Shower" from Ice Age? Not a great burn spell, but I once used it as a sink for an infinite mana combo. Everything and everyone take 500 damage.
Single biggest win rate boost my burn deck ever received was when Sulfuric Vortex came out. And i feel like Everlasting Torment is mandatory burn sideboard.
I recall there is a Eldrazi chilling in Innistrads moon, I'd like to see a burn spell that tutors in an Eldrazi. Maybe like R,R,X: Search your deck for an Eldrazi with CMC where x is mana invested, put it into the battlefield. Deal x damage equal Eldrazi CMC to target. It would be interesting bit of fun because it'll feel like when you invest enough mana you're psychotically breaking Emrakul out to wreck everyone's board state.
I think Innastrad Vampires will probably have a white burn spell that benefits if you target a vampire, a red burn spell with flashback or another “cast instant/sorcery from graveyard mechanic” to fit with magecraft and Innastrad Werewolves will get a Gruul spell that deals damage based on the number of Wolfs/werewolves you control
Here's a burn variation. Make 'em creatures! With the kicker cost you can even sort of target other creatures. Angry Little Zappers 2R Sorcery Kicker 2 Create three 1/1 red elemental creature tokens. Sacrifice at EoT. If this spell was kicked, target creature must block this turn if able.
I like creatures that make burn stronger, guttersnipe dealing 2 damage when you use an instant or sorcery really makes it seem like they are the one casting the spell and its just stronger, cant forget Drakuseth Maw of Flames also causing 7 damage any target and 7 more divided amongst other targets.
Fiery Temper was first printed in Torment, back in 2002! Another example of The Set Mechanic Getting Stapled Onto A Classic Spell. I’m glad it came back for Shadows.

When I started magic back in ice age I seduced first from mono green decks and from lure-venom-regenaration combo but fast I discovered the power of direct damage of mono red power I stucked with them more than a decade. The only flaw they had was the card draw so after kamikawa and ire of kaminari I used blue red decks . Only one thing . I think that slightly better card than hammer is the red beacon . Thanks for the good memories and you made me search my old cards for my old burn decks
for the vampire wedding set maybe "if you gain life this turn, this spell cant be countered" or and X burn spell that says "this spell cost x lest where x is the life you gained this turn"
I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a burn spell into a creature (like a familiar or something) or an artifact (like living torch) that would do one or 2 damage every time you venture into the dungeon. It would be (hopefully) less broken than Cavalcade was
When I started playing MTG I was young and edgy so I was attracted to Black mana mostly and the discard effect. Later in my life I discovered the joy of playing Red, this video was great to take point on some cards I missed and would love to play now. Great video!
Is there a spell that deals extra damage to werewolves? Maybe morbid will make a return in a weaker capacity? Here's hoping the innistrad stuff handles the *other* cool stuff about innistrad, devils, zombie treefolk, spirits. The grave power deck from dark ascension was my first real intro to magic, so the horrific warped treefolk will always hold a special place in my heart
Traditionally Vampires are susceptible to fire and sunlight, so a Boros/Lorehold effect that burns enemies and creatures and exiles vampires who are killed by it would be awesome and flavorful.
There's only two things I want from the upcoming return to Innistrad set: 1. A viable Werewolf commander 2. Another version of Edgar Markov. I don't have a reason why, I just think it would be cool to see him again.
with an Innistrad vampire wedding, we get the idea that Markov(B/W), and Voldaren(B/R) themes will be mixed, so I think there will be a BW drain card with madness R, or a BWR burn that likely costs more, but kills a creature then drains for some amount from the player.
Though not as impressive, I had a similar turn two win red/green deck back in the day called "Channelling Canada". Turn one mountain and orcish lumberjack, turn two forest, tap then sac forest to lumberjack, add red, green, green, cast channel, pay 19 life, tap the mountain and cast fireball directly at face. Channelling Canada because lumberjack and that was the thing my 15yr old brain jumped to first.
I started to play magic...more or less 15 years ago. And I always knew, mono red decks are for people, who really don't like to think when they play magic. Just goblin, burn, goblin, burn, attack, burn, burn, goblin...now when I see on second turn, second mountain I know there's on the other side some drooling...well...goblin and he/she is really exciting about playing that kind of deck...
@@MagicArcanum Honestly effects like that are infinitely preferable to counters in my opinion. Like, I get the game needs counter magic but goodness it feels bad sometimes.
Also I have always thought there was design space for a sorcery burn spell that is unable to be countered if an opponent has cast a spell this turn. Its nothing too fancy but if it was strong enough for the cost it could be useful vs blue, baiting out a counterspell with another card first.
Here is my idea for a burn spell. Lemme know if this has been done...and if it's broken because I have no doubt it is. A name is yet to be given but RB Sorcery Deal 3 damage to any target. If a creature or planeswalker dealt damage by this spell dies and you cast this card from your hand, it gains rebound.
They have rebalanced Bolt several times but I think they haven't made a bolt that is just changed to sorcery speed yet. Definitely could cause a critical mass problem in modern but would be interesting to see how that played out.

I think goblin grenade was passed over. It has won me games where they had 10 or 15 life on turn 3 more then my opponents care to mention (along with reckless abandon). The fact that, for 1 mana, i can carve out a 1/4th or 1/5th of my pal's life gain ressurection deck is just "je parle tres bon"
Great job! I think with the upcoming AFR set, we’ve got to see some Fireball/Firebolt spells as those are iconic in D&D. Some trap-related burn spells would be really cool too. There are plenty of trapped chests, doorways, etc. in D&D, why not throw some burn in there?! 🔥 😎
What we'll see from burn in our near-future: Given that we're still spoiling the D&D set, I'd say that since "Fireball" is too iconic in D&D as well, that it's coming back, along with "Magic Missile" as a new card. As the 5e version of Magic Missile gives you three shots that cannot miss, I'm thinking it will cost 3 mana, and deal 3 damage divided as you choose among any targets (While damage cannot be prevented would be a nice touch, I think that just makes the spell one step too wordy for how iconic it's meant to be). There's also, of course, going to be a 'Fire Trap' style burn card that either ventures into the dungeon, deals more damage once you complete a dungeon, or both.
Remember kids: Lightning Bolt is the reason of the 4 of a kind rule. Because there was a time, as brief as it was, where you could have any number of a card in the deck, much like basic lands... so a great deck to have was 20 mountains and 40 lightning bolts.......... I was only a infant during that time (born in 1990) but once i heard of that rule... me and a frien had to try it.... yeah not a chance of winning.

I made a power of three burn deck and it had this nasty habit of being able to hit the opponents for 90 damage and all creatures too somewhere around turn five. Most of the idea of the deck was that for every one mana I spent I was dealing a minimum of three damage. The funniest and nastiness of the way it works is just a little bit mean. I would have every card that hit for three damage or more for only one mana and then I would also have some very mean "x" spells but I didn't ever use fireball I used things like red sun zenith and earthquake and then coupled them with stuffy doll and pariah's shield. Lastly I would have blazing Salvo which I could use to both hit creatures and to possibly hit the opponents directly for five instead of three if they thought they absolutely needed to keep the creature and indirectly with the shield and stuffy doll if they didn't have a creature that I wanted to kill and blazing Salvo could potentially hit for five for one mana through a bit of redirected effort and with any of the cards that increase the damage caused well if you were to have two or more of these things and you were to play a rolling earthquake. And if you had the stuffy doll equipped with pariah's shield you would increase the damage every time you redirected it. For instance if you spent four mana on 'x' for the rolling earthquake you would start with four damage and it would jump from there so let's say that your damage boosters were furnace of wrath. You like I said go from four to eight to sixteen directly to the opponent everything then it will be doubled again when stuffy doll redirected that which is intended for it then two more times when the damage intended for you get sent to stuffy doll then your opponent. This one spell you spent a total of five mana on hits for 112 damage on the conservative side. This is assuming that you never spent any mana on previous spell to cause damage. And if you did then there were very few people who could survive that much damage on turn five and while you might be able to hit harder or on an earlier turn the most stable and consistent win with that deck was turn five.
I'm a little disappointed that this video didn't mention Cursed Scroll, Grim Lavamancer, Erratic Explosion, or Punishing Fire, as those all seem like pretty big milestones in the evolution of burn.
You know, it's kind of weird to me that there isn't any kind of like, "Holy Fire" type burn spells. Burns that only target Undead/Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves, or Demons. Maybe they could go that route in the new sets, and maybe make those burn cards split/dual colored between Red and White? That'd be neat, honestly.

A sorcery burn spell that says if you lost life this turn you may cast this spell as thouge it had flash

I made a power of three burn deck and it had this nasty habit of being able to hit the opponents for 90 damage and all creatures too somewhere around turn five. Most of the idea of the deck was that for every one mana I spent I was dealing a minimum of three damage. The funniest and nastiness of the way it works is just a little bit mean. I would have every card that hit for three damage or more for only one mana and then I would also have some very mean "x" spells but I didn't ever use fireball I used things like red sun zenith and earthquake and then coupled them with stuffy doll and pariah's shield. Lastly I would have blazing Salvo which I could use to both hit creatures and to possibly hit the opponents directly for five instead of three if they thought they absolutely needed to keep the creature and indirectly with the shield and stuffy doll if they didn't have a creature that I wanted to kill and blazing Salvo could potentially hit for five for one mana through a bit of redirected effort and with any of the cards that increase the damage caused well if you were to have two or more of these things and you were to play a rolling earthquake. And if you had the stuffy doll equipped with pariah's shield you would increase the damage every time you redirected it. For instance if you spent four mana on 'x' for the rolling earthquake you would start with four damage and it would jump from there so let's say that your damage boosters were furnace of wrath. You like I said go from four to eight to sixteen directly to the opponent everything then it will be doubled again when stuffy doll redirected that which is intended for it then two more times when the damage intended for you get sent to stuffy doll then your opponent. This one spell you spent a total of five mana on hits for 112 damage on the conservative side. This is assuming that you never spent any mana on previous spell to cause damage. And if you did then there were very few people who could survive that much damage on turn five and while you might be able to hit harder or on an earlier turn the most stable and consistent win with that deck was turn five.
But repeating barrage was a recurrable burn spell that I actually made work in standard with it with wildfire eternal
Make a Red Archon, each player takes 1 point of damage for each spell played after their first on each players turn.
I don't like mono red. I like to see other colors more, but... I am happy to see the new red cards in adventures in the forgotten realms set.

I'm a little disappointed that this video didn't mention Cursed Scroll, Grim Lavamancer, Erratic Explosion, or Punishing Fire, as those all seem like pretty big milestones in the evolution of burn.
I did try to focus on burn spells themselves, rather than supporting artifacts and creatures, but thanks for calling out some of your favorites!

You know, it's kind of weird to me that there isn't any kind of like, "Holy Fire" type burn spells. Burns that only target Undead/Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves, or Demons. Maybe they could go that route in the new sets, and maybe make those burn cards split/dual colored between Red and White? That'd be neat, honestly.
