Trolls regenerate like Wolverine, not like Jesus. Dude, I almost fell off the chair. I only expect that level of awesome when the green cup is in hand!
I had a real soft spot for Charnel Troll... I wanted such great things for him, but the poor guy was sandwiched between the mono-red meta and the T3feri meta, so he never had his day. :(
I'm sure the earliest piece of *English* literature about trolls might totally be from the '60s, but Norway, the Place trolls come from, is chock full of super ancient legends about trolls, with supernatural abilities including but not limited to regeneration.
Barkhide troll is one of my favorite creatures period, if only because when I started playing (fairly recently) I discovered that it paired really well with hydra growth, and having an exponentially growing, untargetable creature just feels good
Fun Fact, that the regenerating troll reminded me of: The fact that a djinni grants you 3 wishes, is not based in the creatures Lore at all, it was just a decision Disney made to streamline the story.
One fascinating thing about the new legendary troll on Kaldheim. Trolls on Kaldheim are divided into the green-aligned Torga, and the red-aligned hagi. Torga are huge, easily mistakable for part of the land-scape, stone-skinned, thick-limbed, and love to sleep a lot. Hagi have wiry limbs, beaked faces, and red and green skin. Svella, the new legend, is a Torga troll in their normal art, but a Hagi troll in their showcase art! It doesn't make much sense but I think it's pretty neat.
Trolls are honestly one of those mechanically defined tribes in Magic and this realization took me on some mental gymnastics that made me relive my disappointment about skyclave shade in ZNR (love the card, just wish it had a different creature type).
Troll ascetic led to hexproof being called troll shroud for a few years until hexproof was developed as a term. But what surprised me was no Mossbridge Troll and (to a lesser extent) hunted troll love. Mossbridge hitting lots of interesting things, with his super regeneration (especially since hexproof existed at that point), and tie to the shift of lorwyn/shadowmoor, where he was a hideaway land in lorwyn. As well as being another interpretation of a bridge troll.
I've always liked trolls, especially when they're portrayed more like a wise but strong nature people or fairly intelligent but greedy monsters rather than dumb brutes. Thrun and Feasting Troll King are some of my favorite cards in magic, strictly from an aesthetic standpoint. Hoping Kaldheim will bring some cool additions to this tribe :)
According to old Scandinavian stories I heard and read in my youth, trolls are: *-* Big (most of the time) and strong and whatnot. *-* Usually incredibly rich. *-* Sometimes unable to be out in daylight. Or at least despise it. *-* Often very dumb, but other times knows secrets and forms of magic. Usually the trolls who do so are the women.
I remember when Troll Ascetic was an AMAZING creature back in like aught three. I think it was even in InQuest's top 10 at one point and fairly pricey likey $5+.
Sounds like Three Hearts and Three Lions is the first Isekai. Loved the video Ryan! I hope trolls get plenty of support in MTG Ragnarok - I mean Kaldheim
I'm still holding out hope for getting more troll tribe support in kaldheim. I really like their play on destroying and turning back into trolls and gruul just seems like the most fitting colors for them anyway.
With as much time as folks in quarantine spent online last year, I'm hoping that 2020 was the Year of the Troll, and that this year is the Year of the Better Angels of Our Natures. ;)
When I was going up against anything with regenerate I would use something that would exile it for example rune sword and sword of kaldra. That was before things like godsend. And I would also use things that bury cards bury is an ability that allows you to destroy anything that you want and it can't be regenerated. In a few cases bury would also allow you to exile whatever you were hitting with it.
I'm actually building a foiled out troll tribal deck for commander lol, so this is perfectly timed. I find it hilarious, and infuriating, that one of the weakest trolls ever printed happens to be the one from Zendikar rising. Like c'mon wizards, you're printing all this OP bs and you can't even send some love to us troll lovers?
There was a legendary GR troll spoiled after you made this video that is unlike any other trolls that have been made so far. Unfortunate that it didn't come out in time
Yes, the legendary troll was previewed over the weekend, after I had recorded, but I managed to slip him into the video as I talked about what might be in the troll's future. See 14:23
I wish Regeneration was still used. I never found it THAT complicated. Tbh some of the specific abilities they create with every set are way more complicated that Regeneration It was a fun ability.
Hey, Barkhide Troll! Nothing special in the grand scheme of all 5 billion Magic cards, but I loved that card when I was getting into Magic with the default Arena Green deck
Huh. Good to know about where trolls' regeneration actually comes from given I always thought it was part of mythology. It reminds me of how the kraken has become associated with Greek mythology due to (the remake of) _Clash of the Titans_ even though it's apparently from Norse mythology. So thanks for the knowledge. That said, it's more than a bit funny that Trolls and Skeletons shared the same regeneration identity for years yet only Trolls have really been able to get past regeneration dying. Meanwhile, Skeletons continue to flounder as Not-Zombies, and Tinybones is just more proof that Skeletons don't have any real identity in the game still.
I did not include every troll - mostly just ones that introduced a new color or keyword mechanic to the tribe. Hunted Troll, while neat, didn't really bring anything 'new' to trolls by that point.
I'm REALLY hoping tribes will be viable in arena. The grind is just unbearable. Then I turn around and there's Angels and Dwarves and Kaldheim having Kaladesh callbacks... at any rate great video, great take;but most importantly, hope the "Trolls" home viewing gets easier
. Note that despise WotC getting rid of the regeneration mechanics, They sort of made an emulation of the old regenerate ability through the "tap and get indestructible" formula, which is less confusing but also more powerful (this being a reason it's being used scarcely). Personally, I'd like to see the ocasional regenerating creature (maybe in commander like products) and I'm glad they brought back protection after exploring the less complex, less apealling "hexproof from".

I would say regeneration is problematic but keeping the return mecanic or at least for them to feel resistant is needed for the trols not to lose their identity.

“You have to think about it like Wolverine, and not Jesus, ok?”
What a way to start off 2021 😂😂😂
Canonically, Wolverine resurrected more times than Jesus... and I'm not gonna talk about Jean Grey
This channel is a comedic Rhystic Studies
Do you pay the 1?
Trolls regenerate like Wolverine, not like Jesus.
Dude, I almost fell off the chair. I only expect that level of awesome when the green cup is in hand!
Goddamn it Ryan, this isn't what I meant when I said "You have a history of getting trolled."
Last time I was this early The Brothers' War had just finnished.
History if dragons next? Or a LORE for legendary dragons?
Dragons r dope
I feel the build up going into the D&D set coming this summer would be a good time to have that history of Dragons video :)
I want elf ranking :)
The savage races have always been my favorite. It bums me out that trolls have never gotten much love.
A "lotleth" than others.
@@draxthemsklonst [but solid pun]
@@sephirothsadvent
I like the name. Reminded me of someome.
Trolls ARE pretty metal though, so they got that right. There's literally multiple troll-themed metal bands out there, and they all rock
What are said troll themed bands? Is all their music troll themed, or just their name/album cover art?
When he said « but they’re playing rogues so they will win anyway », I felt that.
It hurts ;-;
we all suffer together brother
Hedge troll is such a pretty card, visually.
I will literally pay your daughter’s colleague tuition. This is THE BEST MTG channel to ever exist
LOVE THIS
Just the inspiration I needed to build my troll deck
UR FIRST
The year of the trolls has been every year since the internet was invented.
Fun Fact: Sedge Troll is the oldest card in mtg that can't go in a monocolor commander deck (tied with the original dual lands).
I can't wait to hear summary of kaldheim story from your perspectivev :)
"my brain set to work (without my permission)" man, I don't think I've ever felt this seen...
A History of Trolls...
1911 - Bridge Trolls
2011 - Internet Trolls
I had a real soft spot for Charnel Troll... I wanted such great things for him, but the poor guy was sandwiched between the mono-red meta and the T3feri meta, so he never had his day. :(
He was and still is a very solid card though. I’ve seen him end games, when I’m using him or when I’m against him lol.
i have to say these shows are FACINATING! Seeing how tribes evolve is super fun
I'm sure the earliest piece of *English* literature about trolls might totally be from the '60s, but Norway, the Place trolls come from, is chock full of super ancient legends about trolls, with supernatural abilities including but not limited to regeneration.
“And not... Jesus”
a great line.
That bubble description for regeneration is very good. I’ll have to use that when explaining regeneration to newer players.
It's the highlight of my week when I see an update from Magic Arcanum. Great video as usual!
Now, where's our legendary troll lord!
Wonderful video again, I'm really appreciating how unexpected the creature types you're looking at are!
Barkhide troll is one of my favorite creatures period, if only because when I started playing (fairly recently) I discovered that it paired really well with hydra growth, and having an exponentially growing, untargetable creature just feels good
A video I didn't know I wanted so badly to exist. Thank you, Ryan and Nicole.
Fun Fact, that the regenerating troll reminded me of: The fact that a djinni grants you 3 wishes, is not based in the creatures Lore at all, it was just a decision Disney made to streamline the story.
Love your videos ryan
I like persist or undying as alternative to regenerate, like troll lord that give them all +1/+1 and undying would make sense
Ryan has this incredible vibe of a punny dad who loves teaching you about MTG and I'm all for that!!!
Really love the videos, thorough, quick too the point and well explained.

Svella, the new legend, is a Torga troll in their normal art, but a Hagi troll in their showcase art!
It doesn't make much sense but I think it's pretty neat.
Not sure what’s more savage....all these muscle-boi trolls...or the way you pop bottles in your G6....
This got me wanting to watch Troll Hunter again, great video
Rogues are totally the bane of my existence right now as well Ryan.
Trolls are honestly one of those mechanically defined tribes in Magic and this realization took me on some mental gymnastics that made me relive my disappointment about skyclave shade in ZNR (love the card, just wish it had a different creature type).
I love your videos, they are so well done! Already hyped for the next one.

07:18 "Still a fun TROLLback"
Really clever! Haha
Bruh, dnd, magic, and heros of might and magic... you got it all
I loved the hidden panic look in your eyes as you mentioned Jesus
Nice trolling! Now I think the phyrexian journey is about to start...
I've always liked trolls, especially when they're portrayed more like a wise but strong nature people or fairly intelligent but greedy monsters rather than dumb brutes. Yeah he was really good, but I remember that a lot of players played affinity... Don't remember that much of green outside Tooth & Nail.
These with ink eyes makes a great classic mono black deck.
Although regen is a clunky mechanic, it made the trolls feel much more flavorful and cohesive. Reminded me of the skyrim trolls when I was a lad
I would love to see you guys dig into Kaldheim and point out the analogous gods/legends in Norse mythology.

It's a bit old by now, but I'd love to see you cover The Vanishing. Maybe a history of Mirrodin to go with Vorinclex in Kaldheim?
In Beowulf the first creature Beowulf kills in a troll- which is why he cuts its head off
Very nice video. :)
It's probably the only one time that a yt video will ever mention Sporeback Troll. ^^
I want trolls that turn to stone during the day (your opponent's turn) and have different effects depending on wether they're creatures or artifacts

I wish Regeneration was still used. I never found it THAT complicated. Tbh some of the specific abilities they create with every set are way more complicated that Regeneration It was a fun ability.
Might be cool doing a breakdown of the full story of the Phyrexians now that we see their return.

You forgot about the best troll in the game Ryan. CUDGEL TROLL FTW *air horn*
That G6 comment. Oh god that brought me back.
Yknow, I realise I’d probably listen to an hour long podcast of you and Nicole chatting mtg on a regular basis

Or could you try A History of "insert color of mana here"
Heroes of Might and magic II! I love that game!

Did I miss Hunted Troll some where? He was trolling original Ravnica as well
I did not include every troll - mostly just ones that introduced a new color or keyword mechanic to the tribe. Hunted Troll, while neat, didn't really bring anything 'new' to trolls by that point.
...This came out at a coincidental time. I JUST ordered my Varolz edh deck yesterday...
Please do a video on the titan cycle (inferno, frost, ...) and the other versions inspired by them (Mechacollosusses, Cavaliers, ...)

When the web stories finish, which will probably be close to the set’s paper release in early February.
That green cup tho 💚
