    Famous Roland Drum Patterns with the TR-6S (606/707/808/909)
    I programmed 12 famous Roland drum patterns into the TR-6S, here's what they sound like.
    The question is, does this little box do justice? In some ways the TR-6S is clearly better than all of these vintage Roland drum machine, the price being a big one!
    Shoutout to (at) alliebrowniest (Instagram) for the animations!

      @@LiamKillen I’m really glad I watched your video because for some reason I had a completely false impression in my mind of what a 606 sounds like. Lots of my friends own 606 clones, such as the RD6. But I’ve foolishly dismissed its usefulness due to my long held false impression of its sound. I am a devout 808 fan but prefer a hybrid 808/909 analog machine. The MFB Tanzbar, with its punchy 909 bd and mixed 808/909 snare is my go to drum console. I use it on nearly every track I write as the basis for its substructure. Then I try to incorporate my own handmade Eurorack modules to act as a mortar to blur the otherwise very tight groove. A moire of imperfectly balanced tones gives me the “error” that I crave in my music.

    Hi Liam, I am new to your chanel and relatively new to music gear/producing. I am planning to buy a yamaha reface dx and I am looking for a portable drummaschine to combine it with. I wanna jam/create Synthie-Pop, Acid House, Funk, disco, lofi filter house…everything groovy (Chromeo drums are my favs), so the drum sounds should go into those directions. The Roland 707 has the perfect sounds for me, that 80s vibe and claps are awesome. I wanna be able to lay down drum patterns easy, quick and performe with it (using FXs..) and just looping around, having fun with a drummaschine and a synth. I am not so much into modelling every beat. Should go quick in order to jam with the reface over it.
    What drummaschine/gear would you recommend? Is the Roland TR-6s the right choice?
    What looper would you recommend to loop the reface dx and the drummaschine? Something simple. I wanna stay dawless and portable (batteries).
    Thanks, awesome channel by the way😊

I haven’t had a computer in many many years (I’ve been doing everything from iPhone/iPad) and I never really learned how to use a fully functional DAW (though I’m sure I could catch on if I could get to one). • @wackerburg

    0:52 18 grand for that combo? I think that's a little bit exaggerated. 12-14k is about right. That being said; the 808 and 909 will keep that value and will work for more decades to come. And; they're super fun to use and the inner search is over. That was at least my experience. I pulled the trigger about two years ago, starting with the 909, followed by the 707 plus 727 and now also an 808. Yes, pricey. But it'll "get you there" immediately. I don't regret any of these purchases.
    --- --- ---
    Don't get me wrong, a lot of these new machines are awesome. Especially this compact TR-6S. But instead of emulating the classics, one should use the machine in new ways I think. In all your examples, I instantly hear/feel that none of the originals were used. Since the 909 (80%) and 808 (100%) produce their sounds in the analogue domain, none of the hits sound similiar and they also interact with each other on multiple levels. The most obvious is maybe the 909 snare, which shares its noise part with the clap - so when they are played together, you hear a pretty intense flanging sound in those noise parts. Or when long-decayed 808 sounds are re-triggered - when the previous hit hasn't decayed to zero. Those hits add up and all sound different.
    Whereas when using samples, all hits sound the same. I have an MPC 2000 in my setup, and I use samples of the 909, 808 and 7x7 in parallel to the actual machines. And that really makes sense, because it's a different approach. Also on many levels. I chose to use samples from NOT my machines in order to have them a little bit different from the start. And I can pitch/tune all sounds on the MPC, play all of them at the same time. For instance on the 808, you have to choose between CLaves and RimShot.
    In my experience it also has a huge impact HOW you work with a machine. The MPC with its 16 rubber pads makes me come up with very different patterns than using the x0x's step sequencer and so does using TAP-mode on the x0Xs vs. step-mode. Or having two-level steps per instrument PLUS an overall accent lane on the 909 vs. two-level total accent on the 7x7. The accents really make a HUGE difference on the x0Xs imho.
    --- --- ---
    #funfact I recently recorded the 808 in 192kHz and was surprised that that wasn't even enough in order to capture all the frequencies. That 40 year-old veteran easily produces sound up to and beyond 100.000 Hertz. Roughly 5 times higher than what a CD can capture. Crazy, isn't it?
    --- --- ---
    #finalthoughts All those machines and plugins are tools in the end. But I figured if I wanted a 909, I had to get that. Same for the 808. A TR-6S or Digitakt or Drumbrute or Alpha Base will get you a TR-6S or Digitakt or Drumbrute or an Alpha Base. Actually easy. When you want a screwdriver, you better not buy a hammer :)
    Just my two cents.

    There's a REASON why the 808, 909, and 606 cost thousands of dollars: because they are ANALOG and NOT DIGITAL. Each hit is warm and unique as it is generated for real right there by the hardware--kinda like a real drummer in the room. Plus they have individual outs so you can EQ and shape each drum part to your liking. The 707 is digital but it has individual outs as well. Finally, these machines are rare and hard to replace because it costs more to make analog drum machines with individual outs. You pay for what you get.

    • @LiamKillen
      @LiamKillen  3 роки тому +4

      I don’t buy it. The TR 6s also has individual outs via usb software. The 707 is a fraction of the price of the 808 + 909. I love analog gear and I understand what you’re saying but to pay 8 000$ + for an 808 vs paying 500$ for the 707, there’s a lot of hype involved there- it’s an iconic drum machine that everyone’s used, when it was affordable. I’d love to own one just to have it.
      I’m planning on doing a blindfold test maybe with the 808 vs TR 6S and am curious if people will be able to recognize the difference.

    • @rodmunch6849
      @rodmunch6849 3 роки тому +4

      The REASON, Brian, is that they haven't been made for 40 years. The analogue hype simply multiplies the price set by their scarcity. As for the "kinda like a real drummer in the room", what are you smoking?

    • @LiamKillen
      @LiamKillen  3 роки тому

    Programmed and or drag n drop translates to I don't make my own music but I did a thing and now you can buy my sample pack of all these sounds I "programmed". Im sure you cool af and probably have good taste in music.. but this wanna be musician thing is hackjob artistry at best. And you only relate to 14 year olds with their parents cc. If your sick of peoples critiques then just drum out your percussion on a kit or pads or literally anything that demonstrates musicianship. Mouse clicks don't count. But hey you own a fuck ton of drum machines. Pay your local music store for drum lessons and in like 3 months you probably wouldn't ever have a use to "program" shit again. Unless your a developer.
