A few years ago I was at a military show, sitting on my FV432 and a smartly turned out gent stopped by - wearing medals, blazer & greys. We were chatting and he saw several others wearing headdress and asked me if I thought it would be odd if he wore his beret. Turns out he served 20 years in the French Foreign Legion. I told him that he had totally earned the right to wear it with pride. He put it on and looked the part, a razor sharp, proud veteran.

During WW2 my mother lived on a new council housing estate on the edge of of town, Hull. At the end of the back gardens were farmer's fields, and the army decided it was a good place to site a battery of anti-aircraft guns there, right next to peoples houses ! ( maybe they thought it would 'boost' peoples morale !) When the air raid sirens went off the family would go to the shelter in the back garden where they would then endure the sound of the guns firing at enemy aircraft. My mother, who would be about nine years old was terrified of this and it had a lasting effect throughout her life. When there was a thunderstorm my mother would go under the stairs or in a cupboard and hold cushions over her ears. Apparently, the residents did approach the army with their concerns, and the guns were moved further away.

    • @LetsTab59-bd4fd

I remember the cold war very well including Frankie goes to Hollywood and Threads, it's not just in the army that the language has changed you can't say the things we used to in civilian life either I started working in a dockyard in the eighties and the 'work place banter" back then was truly blood curdling by modern standards and would give even the toughest of today's apprentices their first grey hairs!
Wear your beret with pride and thank you for serving

Trouble is that a lot of qualifications you get in the forces don't stand up in civvy street. A HGV or C licence does, but not a lot do. I worked as a civvy mech for 30 years in a TA unit. I took a Fork truck course at DST Leconfield. I was qualified to drive my units fork truck, but my course certificate wasn't worth a dime in civvy street. My daughters hubby is an air traffic controller in the navy. He wants to do this job in civvy street when he comes out. He will have re train at his own expense. I think it is disgusting. Ex Forces personnel are great people. Very experienced in life skills. Anyone thinking veterans are broken people ought to wake up and smell the coffee, but the military most certainly ought to give their personnel proper qualifications, they've studied hard for what they have got.

Well .... Alot of places don't have street lights, (or ones that actually work - the estate hasn't put the pounds in the meter), or you get people dart out of their drives and don't really look, also, if you wear dark or camoflague clothing and get hit ... imagine this ...
Judge " so describe what xyz was wearing?"
Person " er, camouflage or all dark clothing "
Judge " ok, and the surroundings?"
Person " road with no footpath and high hedges / trees, no streetlights (or no working streetlights)...."
Judge " ok, and the person was wearing camouflage?"
Person " yes Your Honor, I couldn't see them, they blended in / was somewhat camoflagues".
      You get the idea?
Also walking and rambling groups, I believe the leader and lead walker & tail walker have to wear Hi-Vis, so everyone in the group can identify them, might also be an insurance thing as well.
Aside, I almost got runover, when out running near dusk, on a damp and gloomy eveing, a few years back, street lights weren't working, a car reversed off it's drive, high hedges and wall either side, I literally lept / jumped out (of my skin) in shock to safety. After that, always bright clothing & reflective, & different colours, as yellow can attract insects & can blend in with new vegatation in bright sunshine ( esp.in spring) Pink is good & can be seen the furthest distance away.
Orange is good, blue is a shorter distance and abit better on really sunny days if going along unpathed roads, & country roads.
One friend commented on my 'visibility', (like the NASA space station could see me / more reflective than Del boy's dodgy paint job) my reply, if anyone hits me, well I know they were aiming at me!
Consider that electric vehicles are silent aswell. So imho, ppl you've gotta be seen, esp by ppl who are busy / half distracted & probably not "looking."
      But each to their own.
With dark and wet weather inbound, it is very easy to blend into the gloom.
Also if ppl are going to / from work, alot of jobs you have to wear hi-vis & alot of companies don't provide lockers. Regardless of if you are agency, temp perm etc.

A dear friend of my, former Corporal of Horse, Blues and Royals, he was a drill instructor at Pirbright. He was drilling some recruits one was just not getting it and he was, as you say, calling him every name in the book. Nearby was one the Toffee Nosed Blue and Royals Officers. He says, Corporal of Horse!" My friend marches over sultes smartly, Sah! Officers, Says you know Corporal of Horse you really can't say those sort of things to them now. Sah! Salutes, marches back to this particular dull recruit and says to him,"I know you had father, I know you had a mother, the question is Did They Know EACH OTHER!!!!

Can only speak for myself imo the sort of people who say they like war have yet to fight in one, I wouldn't want to repeat the summers of 2007 and 2009 on Herrick 6 and Herrick 10 for as long as I live and I hope noone else has to do it either, yes theirs a rush of adrenaline like no other during a contact but when it goes wrong it's absolutely horrendous

I have watched your videos with interest. I still haven't figured out why you use the name Tab59. Can you enlighten me. I am sure others would like to know. I assume Tabbing is walking with a purpose but i couldn't find this in the dictionary. 59 could that be your birth year ? Hopefully i have not caused offence in suggesting your age. Thank you 👍 and please continue.

Hi Stuart, yes TAB is an Army acronym, Tactical Advance to Battle, the 59 does indeed reference my birth year. Thank you for commenting.

Egg Banjo, I have not heard that expression since my dear old Dad died thirty years ago. In my training in the early seventies we were called everything in the farmyard but a chicken, our first collective description doing drill as a training troop was " You lot are a complete set of uncorodinated W****** " pretty sure you would not get away with that these days 😂😂😂
