In this episode of Dialing In... I take a look at an often requested effect model for me to look at which is the Line 6 original Double Take. This is an effect designed to mimic the effect of double tracking guitars and there are some very interesting possibilities we have at our fingertips with this effect model.

Slop
The Slop knob controls the amount of the slight variation in timing and pitch you would hear from each of the doubled voices. The variations are what we like to call "Defined Randomness" as this amount and timing is directly coupled with the dynamics of the original part. This knob is the heart of this effect, as it will define the voices from tight and refined at low settings and all the way to wild and dynamic at max.
I use this in most live presents going straight into the desk via XLR left and right. It makes my guitar HUGE!
Really does sound awesome when set right. No need for a dedicated pedal I feel.

It is important to note here that the human ear percieves the "sooner" sound as louder. That's why it is usually recommended to put the delayed/double signal 3 to 6 dB louder to get that real double take effect. Try it!!
Oh, and the 2 doubles setting works very well with no volume in the dry signal and low values in "slop" and "sensivity". Got rid of my TC Mimiq after these tests, just to keep everything "in the box"
@@LasCosasComoSean Do you also get inconsistencies in the sound? I'm trying setting 1 and 2 and get inconsistencies, albeit of a little different sort, with both. Like the sound jumps around, sometimes more in left, sometimes sounds like mono center, sometimes well balanced and sounding good. I've been eyeing the mimiq aswell, is this as good as the mimiq?
@@LasCosasComoSean I'm gonna try your suggested 2-doubles setting tonight, and than experiment with a lead boost by blending in the dry signal to get that 'more in your face' lead tone! If I'm happy with the results, the Mimiq will loose its place on my pedal board ;-)
Ok I've found my LIVE setting: My signal chain is completely in MONO, the stereo DoubleTake as the last block (settings: 1 Double, Slop 3.5, Sens 1.6, Mono, Dry -2.4 to compensate for the delayed sound, Wet 0.0). This way when you connect only the Left out to the PA-system there's a full mono. But when connecting both Left/Right out to the PA there's the Double tracked MONO signal, with very little to none 'phasingishy' stuff going on, but it's a much wider sound. For the lead boost I use a mono Delay (340ms) with the level set at +3.0dB, this way you'll get a cleanboost with delay at once, but the magic is when the boost is set that simultaneously the Double Take is set to 2 doubles. So the boosted Dry signal is in the center with a double left and one right giving a very full sounding in your face lead sound! Btw the Mimiq has now left my pedalboard...

Great video, as always. Yes, this is the same effect as the TC Electronic Mimiq Doubler, which I had for a while, but prefer, as you do, to do an extra take when recording. Still, should sound good going FOH. Thanks for the tips!

Every time I think I'm getting close to top of this unit I find a Jason video that makes me understand I'm just sitting at the base of a mountain I didn't yet begin to climb.
You’re not the only one...Dr Sadites is a Helix professor...his sound engineer knowledge and his excellent ears are the key! He also explains clearly...and he can play that gintar too!! The college course on the Helix is right here on his channel.
Try Tiles Reverb at the end of chain from Legacy section, with mix 50% and predelay 0. It gives you fat tone without additional unwanted modulations.
Great video as always man! This is one of my favorite effects. Of course, you have to have a stereo playback system or it's pretty well useless. I agree, it doesn't sound good in mono. I've found you can do a very similar effect with the stereo simple monophonic pitch (not the poly pitch). Place it after the amp, any subsequent blocks must be stereo as well. Set cents and delay to taste, dry and wet hard panned opposite, and importantly mix to 50%. This way is less dsp expensive, and gets rid of the occasional warble of the double take.
Have you had any luck with the 3.0 stereo imager? I can't find a setting I like.

Another great video thanks Jason. Might look into this for live use, I was trying to think of the video you posted a while ago about using delay in one channel to get this effect but can't remember which vid it came from.
Clean ? How does this split the signal into following effects ? If it was after the Tri stereo could you control each of the 3 channels in the stereo spectrum to get super wide chorus ? Or do you get phasing ?

Great video as usual. Can't say I'm fond of this effect so I'm glad it was covered. I only play thru the PC+ so as stereo, I assume I wouldn't hear anything. Waiting patiently for a video for a Digi Poly Drop effect....that would be killer for cover bands guitarists switching between standard and steps lower tunings. I think it's a capo effect block or something?
Very helpful...I could never get this to sound right....I still think the TC Mimiq is better,but dialing in the Double Take yields pretty good results.....It’s definitely not one of those turn everything on 10 effects...less is more..
It's nice to have.But,as you say, it is good to play it again yourself.
Great Video (great video)...... I wish there were more controls on the double take, like being able to control the pitch change in cents, and the timing difference in ms, and I wish you could better mix dry wet to either side or some of both to both sides. It's a cool fx block, but more control (and better fx block documentation) would be helpful.
I suppose you could use the mono version on one side of a split path and turn down the dry signal to get a similar result?

Just tried it, and it does sound great. However, if you add a stereo double take, then mix it down to Mono, there are horrible phasing issues that result in volume loss. In stereo, there are no issues. I tried enabling the double take block / disabling it when running my signal to stereo output, and then then again when running to mono output, It's unusable when running it out of one speaker.

at a glance I thought the bottom left vinyl was crack the skye, then I noticed remission to the right. weird.
I prefer using a 20 to 30ms stereo delay, no repeat, mix 100%, scale 0%, Spread 7.5 to 10 (panning). Great doubling effect for both guitar or vocals
Great video, gonna experiment with this. Even with wet and dry at unity on setting 1 I get the sensation of louder sound from my left headphone, even if my meters in reaper tell me they are the same. Strange Phenomenon
You will find slop on some synthesizers. (Some call it 'analog feel'.) It is to recreate the vintage sound you hear with old synths, where the oscillators, due to their analogue character, with every key press give a slightly different tone (as in never 100% the same sound) and sometimes, with the more wonky oscillators, a slight pitch variation.
Analog synth lovers love that kind of tone, as it gives a certain warmth. Most find the modern (digital) synthesizers sounding too clean, too pristine.
Hey Jason I appreciate all the videos you make! Would you say that the double taker does a better job at double tracking then the adt or any of the multi delay pedals?

Is this what Brian May does ? Or does he use several Vox AC 30 with each amp having just a slightly different echo setting ?
In the studio or live? In the studio, he usually records a crap-ton of tracks. Live, he has 3 AC30s in a wet/dry/wet setup, with his chorus and delay effects only going to the left and right wet amps.
If I use two cabs in front of double take effect what "source" settings I have to use ? Mono or Stereo? thanks
It depends on how you have them panned in the double cab block. If they're both in the middle, use mono; if they're panned left and right, use stereo.

It is not about helix better than other eventually I don’t care if it is better or not....all modelers require a learning curve and home players like me should spent more time on playin rather than surfing on tones Amount of info that Jason had put here made me getting more juice from my stomp.

i'm still not sure if i prefer a short delay for this application or the double take... will probably never decide.
I feel like I always go back to the stereo delay 100% mix 0 ms left 10-30ms right and setting the modulation to a light and slow vibrato

This is great, but be carefull....if you use a mono device using the doubletake, the sound becomes out of phase and sounds horrible
I tried using this with my acoustic. It did have that chorus effect. But I could never get a satisfactory "fatness" out of it.
Did you use the stereo variant, followed by a full stereo signal and out to stereo speakers? Otherwise it will not have the effect you are looking for.
