    All these comments saying “we didn’t want you” no offers came in for you” have very short term memories.. he is one the best most consistent RBs England and the premier league has ever seen yes certain players may have had a better season then Neville but for absolute consistently for over a decade nobody comes close to Neville and I’m a Newcastle fan who hates Man Utd and especially Neville and Roy Keane but your Beckhams and Ronaldos of this world would of been exposed without a Neville behind them to defend and overlap to create space for them

I'm fully aware of Gary Neville's credentials thank you very much as I am aware of Wan Bissaker's, whose forward play isn't as bad as some would make you believe. I believe he is/will be the best right back in Manchester United's history. Yes I said it. Unless you call Cristiano a full back or you're including Duncan Edwards.

    I know Gary can poke fun of himself because he's achieved everything he could have in club football, but there are many younger folks that have not seen him play. He was exceptionally consistent at a high enough level. He had all round good technique in all departments, defending, throw-ins, crossing, and reading the game. People especially forget how decent he was at crossing because Beckham in front of him. He was tenacious, hardworking, and a leader. Bravo to you Gary for being so humble.

    Neville was an outstanding right back. He was very good defensively but he was also a really good attacking right back, which often gets overlooked because of the players he had operating in front of him on the right hand side. He formed a great partnership with David Beckham. Beckham would often look for the early cross. It was one touch (if that) and bang, on to the head of the striker and he also had Neville to overlap him and provide another option. Neville was actually a really good crosser of the ball too so when players looked to try to stop Beckham getting his signature cross in, Neville would be open and could deliver a great ball too.
    When Ronaldo came in you really saw the best of Neville's work ethic and determination. Because Ronaldo would drift inside, particularly in his last few seasons at the club, and wouldn't track back as much, Neville had to effectively operate as a wing back, running up and down the touchline to provide a crossing threat and hurrying back to defend when they lost the ball.
    There were a number of great right backs in world football during Neville's playing days and I'd put him right up there as one of the best. To this day I think he's the best right back of the Premier League era.

    Gary's got some rose tinted glasses when he talks about "the Man Utd conveyor belt" - very few youngsters brought through by Ferguson lasted past 25-26, then they were generally moved on and replaced with better players.
    Only really Gary, Giggs and Scholes who made it right through from youth team to retirement - even Rooney who was there a long time was bought from another club, rather than being "homegrown" by the Utd youth system.
    Ferguson was ruthless in that way, using young players to give energy to the team, and plug gaps when better players were rested / injured - but the key players the team relied on to give the quality needed to win trophies were mainly bought in after developing and building a reputation elsewhere.
    It would be more accurate to say there were 2 conveyor belts and when a player reached their mid 20s they were assessed for ability to hold down a starting place, and more often than not they were moved on and a better replacement was added to the second conveyor belt to run through to retirement / moving abroad in their early 30s.

      You know what I hope you don't get grief for this comment because at first I didn't agree but I see what you mean and it's very true absolutely spot on assesment that, there maybe a few exceptions someone will mention but still very true.

    • @M-E_123
      @M-E_123 4 роки тому

      I can see some might think it's a criticism of Ferguson but it's not - he won everything and always kept a route for youth team players to get game time.
      Neville is one of the few who actually made it all the way, but if he really looks at some of those players that came through after him, he'll see very few established themselves the way he did - his experience wasn't shared by many during Ferguson's time.
      I actually think it's one of his greatest strengths as a manager - he never let the hype about "developing young players", or sentiment for those players, stand in the way of building a successful team and he always knew when to move players on and bring in quality.
      He used young players to keep a certain level of hunger and energy about his team, but he always knew their limits and exactly how far they could take him on hunger and energy alone - and could see when those with more limited abilities were getting too old to offer the attributes he valued / needed in his squad.
