"Surrounded and outnumbered a thousand to one, the armies of Men stood. In their darkest hour, on the brink of annihilation, the Last Army of Man did the unthinkable. They charged."
Reads similarly to the downhill bayonet charge by the Union Army that occurred after rifle rounds were exhausted on Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Good point, though I think confidence kind of passes through a crowd. Like the 80 people at the front would be boosted and hyped, and this would have a domino effect on the rest of the army.
2:13 I love how we see Gandalf wave his hand as if he thinks Aragorn has been corrupted and he’s trying to release him from the spell. Only for Aragorn to smile at him as if to say “Don’t worry, I’m still here.” For Frodo
He's by far not the only one deserving credit here, but man, does Viggo absolutely nails that razor's edge balance between vulnerability and strength. Perfect Aragorn.
For those who don’t know. The lyrics the choir is singing are in elvish. They translate in English to “If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.” The same words Aragorn said to Frodo in Rivendell.
I don't think there will ever be a better audience experience in a theaters than what these movies provided. Unless you've been there you have absolutely no idea. The level of emotional investment felt through the air. There were so many tears, and then literally entire theater cheered and celebrated as if their life depended on what was happening. It was magical. And can't help but notice incredible use of silence in this movie, and this scene in particular. That moment where everything goes quiet before Aragorn whispers "For Frodo" made it crash down on you like a hammer, and have an impact it would've not otherwise.
if it came out nowadays it wouldn't deserve an oscar since "mostly" only bad movies get oscars these days (seriously look at the list of nominations for the last 3 academy awards ceremonies there's like 2 good movies on it per year)
Aragorn felt his whole life that his family legacy was cursed with the seed of corruption but here he finally realizes he is not like Isildur, he doesn’t fight for power or greatness, he does it for friendship and caring for the people, even the little ones. This is why he smiles, a true and sincere smile of nobility. Feels goosebumps every time I watch it.
Isildur actually wasn't corrupted. It's not explained why in the movies but the scene where he is riding, is ambushed by orcs and dies as the ring abandon him is him actually on the way to get rid of the ring by seeking Elrond's council, this is why the ring did as a matter of fact abandon him as even after a year of trying to corrupt him it had little effect, it rather was lost for millennia then be in Isildurs hands.
Which is all total BS not in the book and it SUCKS destroying the credibility of the entire sequence. No seasoned battle commander would run half assed across open ground at an enemy formation. Inappropriate for Aragorn... just amateur hour for the screenwriters and director here.
@@Rep0007 Theres like 100 of them against tens of thousands of orcs. There is no battle formation. Its the end of the world and they are basically charging to their deaths.
When you fully understand who and what Gandalf is, you realize just how impactful this moment is for him. He's seen thousands of years of suffering, pain and death inflicted by Sauron and now it's over.
I love how Gandolf in the books more or less says, that this age was his age. And now that it was over, it was time for him to go, and essentially die. He fulfilled his purpose and then was ready to take the long nap.
You can tell just how much heart was put into this trilogy. “We had no interest in putting our messages into this movie. But we thought we should honor Tolkien by putting his message into it” -Peter Jackson, 2002 The trilogy is still a flawless 10/10 masterpiece in 2024, and will always be :)
The hobbits rushing in right after Aragon and before the other always gives me goosebumps. They don’t look back. They don’t care. They are just selfless and willing to aid Frodo to save the world regardless of their life. Hobbits are quite peculiar creatures indeed
I've always felt it wasn't arogorn that led that charge but merry and pimpin . Because arogorn charged and nobody moved but with in littoral nano seconds those 2 Hobbits haulled ass to there death with arogorn and then everyone else moved not only by arogorns speech but by the sheer gravitational pull of the sheer size of the Hobbits massive balls. I loved this scene so much and I'm going to keep my head cannon for as long as I live lol.
"And the woods of Tuckborough and Buckland will burn. And all that was once green and good in this world will be gone. There won't be a Shire, Pippin." The saddest scene
Isn’t it fantastic, how Frodo actually fails the quest… and it’s the acts of compassion both he and Bilbo did - sparing Gollum - and also the Ring’s own corrupting force - turning Gollum and Frodo against each other in a mad rage (a great addition in the film version that Frodo is fighting back) - which ultimately undoes the Ring and Sauron. Amazingly well constructed, just like the Ending of Star Wars, where it is compassion and love that father and son feel for each other, which undoes the Emperor. That’s how you construct an ending. All the core themes play into it.
@@BjarkenbI think it’s more, if you do enough good, for good sake, without it being a transaction, it will come back to you in surprising ways. Frodo didn’t save Gollum because he thought he would, in the end, doom the ring, he did it because it was the right thing to do. Do enough good in the world, and the good adds up

@@Infernal460 This is why I like the Extended Editions more cause Mouth of Sauron scene changes everything. To Aragorn, Pippen, Merry, and the crew, Frodo is dead, which implies that Sauron already has the Ring(or will soon). Sauron talking to Aragorn is basically saying "It's already over. Come join our side: the Winning Side". It's the same temptation Saruman and so many others fell bait to. Aragorn, along with everyone in this scene, said they'd rather die with their honor/beliefs intact than live another second. Extended Edition LOTR is the greatest film trilogy of all time
Soldier in the back: "Who is that guy, again? I kinda lost track of things after like the one hundred battles we fought." Other soldier: "Aragorn, son of Arathorn." Soldier in the back: ".... who's Arathorn?"
Personally, I just want to thank all the 1000's of talented people, known and unknown who worked together to produce these three films on so many different levels. You nailed it. THANK YOU.
Real girl power existed in this movie unlike rings of power. To few men could ride horseback almost all the "men" fighting with sword and shield and spear on horses are real life strong women.
@@jordanquant388 exactly. Watch the behind the scenes. They had like 12 men who could ride horses so basically all the scenes with men on horseback are women with prosthetic beards and the men in front of them. Those stunt women also did all their own fighting on and off horseback.
I recently watched all three extended editions in theaters in one day and the moment when Aragorn is giving his speech was so, so moving. It was the end of the journey, but a great one at that. When they all charged you could feel what they felt, and it was beautiful
The best part of this entire trilogy for me is when, right after the speech is done, Aragorn says, "For Frodo" and Merry and Pippin charge headlong into a battle that is almost certain death without so much as a single thought for their own regard. The courage of the Hobbits in this scene is so wondrous. The fact that they are the smallest beings of Middle-Earth holds no bearing on how big their hearts are.
Peter Jackson out of his mind as usual. Why on earth wouldn't Sauron himself defend his own land? if the crowd doesn't get it, then let Aragorn and Gandalf have a discussion about it before the fight.
The absolute war cry as they charge towards Sauron's army is well depicted: "It ends here, now, forever". After the three movies, we were all exhausted by the evil depicted in the story.
I absolutely love the friendship that's developed between Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli in this trilogy. You can just see and feel the mad desperation Legolas feels when Aragorn is being threatened by the troll. He is willing to fight and die for his friend. Jackson may not have been 100% accurate with his interpretation of the LOTR but he captured the soul of the books like no other.
can y'all stop ? LotR was the perfect adaptation one could ever possibly make. This was once considered as the impossible book to be adapted into a screen yet the hardwork and dedication of PJ proved it right!
It's the man tears anthem. Gets all of us, every single time. I come back to this every time I need a good kick in the ass to shake me off whatever is bothering me.
He wasn't speaking to the troops to rally them. He was speaking to the Fellowship, right there with him. Two of them were in danger, and the way to save them was forward.
I love that the hobbits follow his charge first and then the rest of them follow, but the hobbits straight up charged right away after that "for frodo"
Gimli: “I never thought I would die fighting side by side with a elf” Legolas: “How about side by side with a friend?” Gimli: “Aye... I can do that.... Aragon is here”
5:50 You can see in Gandalf's face the extraordinary pride he has in Frodo for completing the mission he set him on, and the relief of the end of hundreds of years of battling the dark.
bruh imagine defending minas tirith with all you have and face the orcs at the black gate just to die a couple minutes before the whole middle earth is saved... props to all these forgotten heroes
Aragorn’s face at 2:17 is the expression of a man who has accepted that he’s charging headfirst into his death. Outnumbered so many times over he knows he and his group of war weary survivors more than likely will not survive, but he’s willing to do it anyway. “These things we do, that others may live”
It also goes true to his word that he gave Frodo in the Fellowship when Frodo said he would take the ring to Mordor at the Council of Elrond. "If by my life or death I can protect you, I will"
I don't know if anyone else feels the same but I love the moment from 1:50 when Sauron is speaking to Aragorn. You can see Aragorn going forward like something is calling him, at the same time you can see Gandalf and Legolas glimp of woriness. Right there, where Aragorn is putting his sword down and keeps going forward everyone is curious about what he is about to do. I believe this is a beautiful contrast between Aragorn and Isildur. When Isildur heard a voice calling him he gave up to it, however, Aragorn has seen through it and knows what his mission is here.
When he looks back, and even Gandalf is doubting if he can resist the will of Sauron, then he turns and says 'for Frodo' the whole cinema cheered. It was a fabulous cinematic experience.
He was possessed but Gandalf "exorcised him". Remember that Gandalf is like an angel that is sent to guide them win the good battle, mortals by themselves cannot fight these higher beings like Sauron and Nazgul, so in these moments was shown that even the most honorable people can get corrupted and they need divine guidance. Also this was shown with Frodo, a pure innocent hobbit getting corrupted in the final moments.
"For Frodo." I lost count of how many times I have replayed the scene when Aragorn charges as the Fellowship theme plays. This part is even more epic when you realize that the choir is singing what Aragorn said to Frodo in the first film "If by my life or death, I can protect you I will, you have my sword." in Sindarin as Aragorn leads the charge. When the eagles arrive you can see hope restored as it gives a sense of divine intervention. This entire scene is perhaps the greatest film climax ever written, it makes you feel so many emotions at once.
This trilogy is a cinematic achievement that'll forever remain unsurpassed. Sad that no filmmaker since Peter Jackson has come up with something as groundbreaking as Lord of the rings. The entire trilogy combined for 11 hours will always remain my favourite of all time.
This wasn't a battle they expected to win through superior combat capabilities, this was a distraction. They led Sauron and his armies on as long as possible to give our 9 fingered boy Frodo the time he needed. Still though funny joke xD
I mean, it's not like they have the numbers to prevent the enemies from surrounding them. They could try and form a row, but then their force would be spread too thin.
@@similaritiesendhere Not enough horse and men for cavalry charge. Besides, it was a battle that cannot be won through military force. Their goal was simply to buy time for Frodo.
People praise the Rohirrim' charge, which surely is outstandingly admirable, but this scene is also on par with it. These are last of the men, surrounded by millions of orcs. They know it's a suicide mission, even Gimli and Legolas were having their final moments together. Yet all of them, they charged. No fear, no hesitation. Also look at the diversity here. We have a dwarf, an elf, two hobbits, a wizard and the men of the west with their king. All different races, yet they charged together, like true brothers in arms. The unity, the courage, the fearlessness, the charge, the screams.... Mindblowing
It'll never be remade the same way this one was. Thats not just because of nostalgia, but because of how the film industry is now. CGI looks terrible nowadays because theres no love in it, mass produced in sweatshop like fashion for well under the money the talent deserves. Actors not being able to keep their noses out of political affairs thinking their opinions are more of value and influence than anybody else's. And just in general I don't know how they could perfectly cast all of these characters and more again. I just don't see it possible. Film industry pushing agendas to cater for all audiences and to tick boxes for marketing . Rings of Power is a great example of this. It's devastating because we have the technology, skill and money to do it right, to create insane masterpieces that could last 100s of years if not forever. Just that everything is being poisoned, corrupted and warped for quick cash grabs and appeasing groups of people that would riot if representation isn't a massive topic in a entirely unrelated piece of art.
Guy at the back: “what he say?” Guy in the middle: “he’s got a new sword, and is showing everyone” Another guy at the back: “doesn’t seem like the best time”
At least according to modern scholarship on the subject, by the likes of John Keegan or Adrian Goldsworthy, which is probably the closest we moderns will ever get to knowing what it was like to fight in pre-modern battles, being in the centre of the battle line was most likely a terrifying place to be. You couldn't hear anything other than the sounds clanging of metal and the screams of wounded and dying men, just a short distance away from you. But you'd also have absolutely no idea how well your side is doing, since you can't actually see over the men in front of you. That uncertainty was compounded the fact you're completely stuck in the center of the formation. Those in the back ranks can take comfort in being able to escape first, those in the front ranks are in an adrenaline filled frenzy and don't have the time to stop to think about their situation. But you're just squished in the middle, waiting to win or lose in a situation you likely have no ability to ever impact. So, as much as historians are able to reconstruct, being in the middle of the formation would have been absolutely terrible.
Yes, a true life epic of good vs evil is Canada standing up to PM Trudeau's tyranny while the masses of liberal media outlets call peaceful, loving Canadians racists, terrorists, right-wing extremists, insurrectionists, and Nazis.

Just as annoying as the SJWs, but with twice the hypocrisy.

5:50 the acting by Ian is amazing, u can see how he's portraying a character who has witnessed the reign of Sauron for so long that he is just so happy to see it over.
Aragorn embodies what true masculinity is. It's not about being aggressive and pushing your weight around to dominate others. It's about service. Service to the people you love, to protect them, to lead by example and bring others up with you when they are down.
@@VicenzoV Because of the increased insanity of what's happening the entire time. The entirety of Sauron's armies and all of humanity on this side of the world. The previous movies were mostly smaller skirmishes or dark and quick-view armies. These are prolonged shots of impossible to be practical effects.
@@harry_theking159 Mumakil skin is not as hard as a troll's, remember how many arrows he was unloading back in Moria and nothing, and a headshot broke the arrow, it is only under the neck that you have a chance, and this one is armored, probably a chieftain(yes they can be chieftains) and by the looks of it an Ologhai of all things, so I'm not surprised Aragorn couldn't solo him(at least not under those specific cramped conditions). That thing would take quite a few arrows aimed at the neck or a good spear chug deep into its throat before it goes down.
Is the elf stupid? Why did he simply not run on the helmets?. He does other equally silly feats in the three movies. But then forgets he's an elf and can walk on snow without sinking.

FAQ 1) Why do they even fight? To make Sauron focus their attention on them, and to lure out saurons army and nazgul. Otherwise Frodo and Sam would have needed to walk through an army to get to mount doom 2) Why let the enemy encircle them tho? Because Aragorn needed Sauron to think he was a cocky, overconfident young king, falling prey to the power of the ring. He has shown himself in the Palantir, taunting Sauron. He made Sauron think he has the ring. He put up camp right in front of the main gate, sounding the horns, demanding for Sauron to come out and kneel in front of the „lords of the west“. If he had put up a good defensive position or ambush sauron would have been careful. He might have sent out his nazgul to keep their eyes open for suprises. He might have kept back some of his forces for an encirclement, to intercept an ambushing force or to make sure no one would run away with the ring (again!). By letting Sauron encircle them Aragorn made sure all enemy troops would come out and Sauron would put his attention fully „on the price“ 3) So basically eagles save the day - again! No, not really. At this point the ring would have made it anyways. They saved quite a few lives, but thats it. Also considering Sauron is literally a god and always has all the advantages its only fair for manwe to slightly tip back the scales a bit from time to time (Eagles being strongly associated with manwe) 4) where did aragorns horse go? In the books they actually had a mounted force with them, but they were removed from the movie for whatever reason. Aragorn riding in on a horse, which then disappears is - at this point - just a continuity error. 5) No one on the back even heard what Aragorn was saying This is a common problem - we know of quite a few historic pre-battle speeches. A lot of them probably were added later on, but a number of them must have happened. Here are a few ways to look at it: The speeches might have been repeated multiple times for different parts of the army. People from the front might have repeated them to the ones behind them. The speeches might have just been for the leadership, expecting the common solider to just follow the signal/banner/leaders or you might have preplanned the speech and have multiple people read them. Neither of those things would have fit the mood here, so it was probably right to just omit it from the scene. Also: In a world full of magic, orcs and dragons you could just give them this amount of leeway, right? 6) Isnt it a bit too convenient the ground just stops breaking in front of the good guys Sure. If you want you can call this Manwes or even Illuvatars intervention. But there might be a better reason: The destruction of the ring does more than just kill Sauron. He bound his power and fate to this ring. The destruction of this ring fulfills saurons fate, and of those whose fate he bound to himself. His work becomes undone. The power of the ring reverts against its owner and his labours. 7) The bad guys still couldve won Probably, yes. In the book it is described that the armies were bound to Saurons willpower. Quite a few amongst those orc, goblin and human tribes fighting for Sauron werent exactly best friends either. With Sauron dead the will that bound them together vanishes. Also they just saw a god die and half a country become ripped in half. So most of them run. Even in our history most battles were won because the opposing force routed, sometimes even numerically superior forces. 8) How did Saurons eye not see Frodo? There are multiple answers for this. First of Aragorns plan worked out. He made Sauron focus on him. Sam and Frodo also were somewhat protected by their fate, Galadriels cloaks and their nature. The hobbits always seemed to have some resistance to the rings allure. And by resisting the ring they resisted it pulling them over into the spirit plane where they would have been open to saurons gaze. The ring only had power relative to its wielder. The book describes that it made its wielder powerful by their own standard. The hobbits were neither powerful, nor did they desire power. Thus the rings was relatively weak in their hands. Weak enough to not be noticed. But the most important thing is this: Sauron is very intelligent and cunning. But he has one fatal flaw - the biggest advantage the fellowship has: He could never, every imagine someone destroying the ring. Use it against him? Yeah. Even hide it? Maybe. But go to mordor to throw it into mount doom? Unthinkable. Not only did he think this is unlikely or even impossible....the very thought was so foreign to him he never once thought about it.
@john smith not really. i mean - sure. but there is a deeper meaning. sauron built these using his powers. tolkien explicitly mentions barad dur is held together by dark magic. the moment sauron died his works fell apart
3:11 People fail to realise that the Eagles are connected to the Gods, They do not interfere with Mortal Businesses but with Sauron they had to intervene. This scene is powerful AF.
Man the scene with Gandalf right before the eagles came really was done beautifully. They made it seem like Gandalf, who is much stronger now due to him to being White instead of Gray was genuinely afraid/discouraged/all hope is lost once he saw the Nazgûl and their mounts flying towards them because he secretly was still holding out hope that Frodo would really save them by destroying the ring and saving middle earth and the people who marched out to confront the dark lord just to buy Frodo time and keep that eye away from him. But the moment he saw them, his expression made it seem as if all hope was lost. He seemed terrified and utterly heartbroken as he realized that he would have to see that many brave men, Aragon, Legolas and every one else die before him because he’d be the last one to fall due to him being an istari and maiar. Then the look of utter relief when the eagles came… man this was really well done.
I seen this movie for the first time when I was 7 or 8 I’m 27 now it still remains my favourite peice of cinema to ever exist and probably always will be. The for Frodo charge brings me to tears now. And the goosebumps is unspeakable
4:12 there's something about these next few shots when Aragorn goes down and it cuts to Legolas. The look of blind terror and panic on his face when he realizes Aragorn could legitimately die here. And then again at 4:22. Legolas is always composed, always graceful, you see it in the way he fights, the way he moves, even the way he talks. /None/ of that is present here. He's abandoned all of his usual battle tactics and he's literally /shoving/ orcs aside with his bare hands. Watching him desperately claw his way through the throng to even just try to reach Aragorn in time always breaks my heart a little.
Do you remember the scene after the battle of Pellenor? Eomer went out on the battlefield and found his sister. The look, facial express and especially the eyes of Karl is incredible for me. The horror, terror and the pure pain. I also lost my sister a couple of years ago and let me tell you that scream is real.
IIRC in the original script and when they shot this scene. Aragon was supposed to be fighting a physical manifestation of Sauron himself. Legolas's reaction of sheer panic and desperation here is even more accurate if you consider that he was supposed to be watching his friend desperately fending off the dark lord himself.
The culmination of The Fellowship Theme as a chorus really just shows the journey's progression...The theme in itself is nostalgic and this variation of the theme really hits hard. Howard Shore truly gave something to scenes like this (where little was spoken and action was possibly front and center) Everything works in harmony throughout the trilogy (music- direction- actions-acting-visuals-set design-costumes) and that's what makes the trilogy for the ages.
Just rewatched this movie again and cried like a baby. 20 yrs ago I watched the first movie in the theater and 3rd time watching it again and it always gets me. Best story, cast and production. A true gem even with the new fancier movies. I just cant get enough how good is the plot

It’s so tear jerking to look at Gandalf and Aragorn’s faces while the tower is falling. It’s a combination of astonishment, relief and being utterly proud of Frodo succeeding. I want the people I love and look up to to look at me like that one day.
It always makes me sad [and a little annoyed] everytime anyone says "they are proud of Frodo" ---- this goes to show that even the audience think [or assume] that all the main characters think of Frodo as the HERO, when in actuality, Frodo would have not made it [not even halfway to Mordor] without SAM. I understand that Frodo carried most of the burden, but then again, that's because he was the rightful heir of the ring [Bilbo's heir], hence he is literally the only one allowed as ring bearer. The mere fact that Sam has been treated as a side character is so unjustified.. During the last stand, You could hear the main characters screaming at the top of their lungs "for Frodo"... And this itself is a testament that all of them only think of Frodo, not even the slightest regard for Sam.... It's so infuriating because if the roles where reversed, I'm pretty sure that Sam would have made it much farther than Frodo did , tbh.
I think sam is included in their mind when they all say this. They just don't really have the time to say it there and they know they're both on the mission.@@V_for_Vendetta_

Fun fact for those who didnt know: At 2:19 the musics lyrics is the vow Aragorn gave to Frodo. (in Elvish) Translate: If by my life or death I can protect you, I will I give you my sword Ringbearer, I give you my word, It cannot be broken. Nor turned aside, Let the horns sound, This day is not done! Let Mordor know this: Elessar! Elessar! The Lords of Gondor have come!
You wouldn’t happen to know where one could find the written elvish version of that, would you? I’m planning on customizing my and my fiancée’s wedding bands for next year with Tengwar script, and this reads very well for a husband’s vow. (I presume it’s Quenya being sung, instead of Sindarin.)
Fun fact: the troll was actually Sauron. Jackson wanted a suitable enemy for aragorn at the end. But then they choose the troll (cant remember why exactly) and put the troll over Sauron.
@@shadowhunter_ray_9640 it was because they wanted to that this wasn't so much Aragon vs Sauron but more Aragon putting everything he had on the hope that Frodo would be able to use the battle as a distraction
Viggo is immense here. So many moments to savour. "The same fear that would take the heart of me" goosebumps. "But not this day" goosebumps. Acknowledging Frodos pain from the promise of Sauron in exchange for servitude "For Frodo" is just beautiful. Merry and Pippen charging without hesitation. Goosebumps. Everyone facing certain death and letting the horses free, because they don't have to die, then charging with love of Frodo, not hate of Suaron. PERFECTION.
I would say charging with love for 'everything they hold dear' and inspiration, admiration for Aragorn, while only the companions of the fellowship are doing it for that and Frodo
I don’t hear it mentioned often, but I also find it beautiful that he says “on this GOOD Earth.” Something that both Morgoth and Sauron loved to do in many occasions was trying to convince the Children of Ilùvatar that the Valar and Ilùvatar himself didn’t exist, and/or were deceiving them about the origins and the true nature of the world. That the world was in fact created by Morgoth, was ugly and evil by nature, and therefore that Morgoth himself - or Sauron in this case - was its rightful ruler. Well, just by saying “this good Earth”, Aragorn is calling bullshit on all that. He’s not only defying Sauron, he’s implicitly defying Morgoth too, by reminding his brothers that, despite all the evil that the dark forces poured into it, the world, at its core, does remain good. And, as Sam said, it’s worth fighting for.
1:52 I think that at this moment, Sauron promised the world to Aragorn if he would accept him as his master; Aragorn then truly understands the enticement that Sauron's have over Frodo throughout the journey, by the ring's power, realizing how painful that would have been. Marvelous acting.
A good theory. And Aragorn is unaffected, in the sense that he isn't like other men, nor Isildur: Both Morgoth and Sauron tainted Men, they corrupted them, lied to them, gave them fear of death and made them cowardly and dishonorable. Many of them carried those corruptions and impurities down the generations, their souls like white sheets with spots of dirt on them, and many of those Men had to overcome those corruptions while other great Men like Theoden, who called out to death with his fellow Rohirrim at the battle for Minas Tirith, had to overcome them for them. Aragorn was untainted, a clean soul, the kind of man you thought hadn't existed since they first came to Middle Earth, as if he had to be corrupted all over again, for the shadow over Isildur's lineage did not sway him.
@@teleportedbreadfor3days Indeed, King Theoden using Death as his warcry was a statement that they didn't fear it, for it was dying trying or living in fear, while at the same time being in accordance with Eru Iluvatar's plan for humanity since the beginning. 2:12 A nice little detail I noticed is that after Sauron calls to Aragorn and Aragon lowers his sword and turns to look back at his friends, Gandalf waves his hand like that to see if Aragorn fell under Sauron's spell and his face became worried when he couldn't sense anything.
Yep, nice little attempt at a fake out for people who didnt read the books, nevr really noticed it back in the day. Its simple, easy touch that added a lot to the scene.
Also Peter Jackson said that this was Viggo Mortensen's idea. He wanted to make it seem that Aragorn has befallen Sauron's spell. But he'll then turn around and say "For Frodo". Also kudos to LOTR team for adding that bit where Sauron was calling him Elessar, the name Aragorn was given when he turned king. It clues us in that Sauron was promising power to Aragorn, but Aragorn was not affected.
The moment Sauron realizes what’s really going on ( the battle being used to draw out all the orcs and overall distract him) and the Nazgûl fly to Mount Doom? Chills
And in that very moment, Sauron felt utter, extistential terror. The books describe it as such: "Straight down upon the Nazgûl [the Eagles] bore, stooping suddenly out of the high airs.... But the Nazgûl turned and fled, and vanished into Mordor's shadows, hearing a sudden terrible call out of the Dark Tower; and even at that moment all the hosts of Mordor trembled.... And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the Power in Barad-dûr was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung. From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom."
I just love that once Aragorn says, “ For Frodo” both Merry and Pippin charged first. Of course they would, it was a charging cry for a friend of theirs that they’ve known for years, and that’s something/someone they can fight for.
Scoundrel 666 SFB I think it was very important that none of the warriors and generals did, in stark contrast to the Last Alliance’s endgame way back when. They are all paying for the sins of Isildur to this day.

Outnumbered so many times over he knows he and his group of war weary survivors more than likely will not survive, but he’s willing to do it anyway. “These things we do, that others may live”

Aha! Thanks for this interpretation, Ive always wondered what could be the meaning of the tears in his eyes
Even his wife had foreseen that moment in the first movie. That he would defeat the weakness of Isildur's temptations. Oh such a beautiful story 😭
When he looks back, and even Gandalf is doubting if he can resist the will of Sauron, then he turns and says 'for Frodo' the whole cinema cheered. It was a fabulous cinematic experience.
Or did Gandalf cast a spell to help clear his mind? 2:12-2:15
For frodo。

I lost count of how many times I have replayed the scene when Aragorn charges as the Fellowship theme plays.

FAQ
1) Why do they even fight?
To make Sauron focus their attention on them, and to lure out saurons army and nazgul. Otherwise Frodo and Sam would have needed to walk through an army to get to mount doom
2) Why let the enemy encircle them tho?
By letting Sauron encircle them Aragorn made sure all enemy troops would come out and Sauron would put his attention fully „on the price“
3) So basically eagles save the day - again!
No, not really. At this point the ring would have made it anyways. They saved quite a few lives, but thats it. Also considering Sauron is literally a god and always has all the advantages its only fair for manwe to slightly tip back the scales a bit from time to time (Eagles being strongly associated with manwe)
4) where did aragorns horse go?
In the books they actually had a mounted force with them, but they were removed from the movie for whatever reason. Aragorn riding in on a horse, which then disappears is - at this point - just a continuity error.
5) No one on the back even heard what Aragorn was saying
This is a common problem - we know of quite a few historic pre-battle speeches. A lot of them probably were added later on, but a number of them must have happened. Here are a few ways to look at it:
The speeches might have been repeated multiple times for different parts of the army.
6) Isnt it a bit too convenient the ground just stops breaking in front of the good guys
Sure.
7) The bad guys still couldve won
Probably, yes.
Damn how long took that to write. And gj. I understand
Thanks

3:11 People fail to realise that the Eagles are connected to the Gods, They do not interfere with Mortal Businesses but with Sauron they had to intervene.
This scene is powerful AF.
Totally agree.

@@nathangarland9453 -_______- bruh
Howard Shore truly gave something to scenes like this (where little was spoken and action was possibly front and center)
Everything works in harmony throughout the trilogy (music- direction- actions-acting-visuals-set design-costumes) and that's what makes the trilogy for the ages.

I don’t hear it mentioned often, but I also find it beautiful that he says “on this GOOD Earth.”
Something that both Morgoth and Sauron loved to do in many occasions was trying to convince the Children of Ilùvatar that the Valar and Ilùvatar himself didn’t exist, and/or were deceiving them about the origins and the true nature of the world.

I actually think that Gandalf is not waving his hand, but he is showing Aragorn Frodo's mithril shirt, to which Aragorn then says for Frodo

He has thinked: oh fuck

"Straight down upon the Nazgûl [the Eagles] bore, stooping suddenly out of the high airs....
