    Both these athletes are at the height of the competition, yet, somehow an immovable object and an unstoppable force make such a hilarious comparison to two drunks fighting on the pavement.

    For those who don’t understand why the fight is so “boring”, judo is all about getting the correct stance and waiting to catch your opponent off guard. Anyone who’s competed before knows how difficult and tiring it can be trying to get your hands and feet where you want them.

    For the people who do not know what they are doing in the video.
    This is judo and in judo you have to try to throw the opponent in such a way that he falls on his back, then you have won. But you can not throw if you have no grip and those in the video just fought for the grip. Riner won because haraswa had two "shidos" (punishments), which he got because he fought so passively that one did not have a chance to throw a punch

      @R Lopez there were warnings or minor breaches of the rules
      Teddy had less so he won

    • @paulstarstarpaul5700
      @paulstarstarpaul5700 3 роки тому +16

      @R Lopez at that time the rules were that you could win a fight on shidos (penalties). This rule was total bs, because for people could for example-like Riner (the guy in the white gi)-just dominate their opponents for the first 30 seconds, so they were penalised one or two times and the remainder of the time prevent fighting and attacking as much as possible by destroying the grip as long as they avoided being penalised.
      Luckily the ruleset has been changed and there now needs to be a score or one competitor needs to be „awarded“ three shidos (referees normally penalise the third time way later than the second and first because it means a disqualification. However people want the fight to end in a score so normally they wait for a long time before awarding the third shido) in order for one opponent to win on regular time. If neither happened it goes to golden score nowadays.

  • @jaimefernandezestevez117
    @jaimefernandezestevez117 7 років тому +70

    Just an input. This is the problem with Riner, basically.
    They are both right handed, which means they want to grip with their left hand the right hand of the opponent, ok, and the other one can go to the chest's flap or the back.
    1:53 Riner blocks him with his left hand, stablishing a beam from his left shoulder to Harasawa's chest, Harasawa tries to grip with his lef hand Riner's right arm, at the wrist's sleeve, but not easy task.
    1:54 (you could just, from 1.53, set 0.25x speed easier) Once Harasawa did such a hard task like gripping Riner's left sleeve, Riner drops for a second his left hand and Harasawa jumps literally to take with the other hand the back of Riner. Riner blocks again the chest of Harasawa and aborts the attempt.
    Now, just few seconds later, Kumi-kata's fight continue but with different result.
    2:00 Riner grips with his left hand the right hand of Harasawa, what both are trying to do the whole combat by the way. Riner keeps working, break the Harasawa's grip at 2:04, the same grip that he is also applying to Harasawa, easily, and finally 2:06 he's the only one who got a nice grip at the sleeve, at the wrist. Powerful situation for Riner.
    2:07 Harasawa starts to defend, gives some back steps what is not usually a good idea but is in troubles, shakes the hand desperated as Riner did just 2 seconds before, but could not break the grip, and Riner launches the hand to Harasawa's back.
    Harasawa is in serious problems so he goes down, what deserves a Shido. And this is the endless story with Riner. So much stronger than the others... but not necessary better.
    Thanks if you read everything. The Kumi-kata fight, when you are into it because you practice Judo, is also so appreciated, but even for me is boring not seeing real and scored throws.

And if a sport is losing its taste like what almost happened to Wrestling unfortunately, then they take it out. I love judo and I look forward to see people earn their Frequent Flyer Miles. I love drama, I love ippons. Olympians are there to compete in all seriousness for their country and all the same time make networks a lot of money. So I'm sorry to say if I'm bored with your match just like if someone is bored with mine. I'm not gonna lose my mind if someone thinks so. There's actually a lot of mindgames behind all the sleeve grabbing because they know what the other person wants because of where the sleeve is grabbed and their positioning so it takes a very smart person to recognise they're being read and to adapt so quickly

    Judo has become watered down sissy fighting. You can't grab the legs. You can't grab the neck, you can't grab cross lapel, there's no more emphasis on the ground fighting. Penalties are given for no reason at all. The big guy should have have been penalized for not attacking anyway.
    Judo is not what it used to be. It was a tough sport with lots of refined attacks and defenses. Now it's just a game of cheap tactics. More often winning by having less penalties.

      Judo is all about balance and counter attack, agaisnt Riner most of the judokas loose before they even started the fight, so they try to win on a mistake from a Riner attack or refuse any Riner attack. When they play onr egular not so much important tournament until 2012, others judokas were ippon by Riner in a minute...

    • @maelc541

      mainly for 2 possible reasons in my opinion:
      - the brazilian public didn't like Riner to win because he beat their champion and hero Rafael Silva to reach the final (this is the main reason I think)
      - public was disappointed with a tactical match and no throw for the show

    • @Stayvinn
      @Stayvinn 7 років тому +1

      Ah I see, yea the first reason makes a lot of since. I don't watch a lot of Judo, so I thought that Teddy might have been using a lot of cheap moves or something. Thanks for the clarification thou!

    Por más títulos y campeonatos ganados que tenga Teddy Riner, es uno de los judokas que revolucionó el judo para mal. Uno de los peores conceptos y figuras del judo, que solo aprovecha su fuerza y descredita totalmente la técnica y elegancia que alguna vez tuvo el judo, antes del infeliz SPORT Judo. Por eso, la categoría de +100 debería ser eliminada, para que malos prospectos como Teddy Riner no devaluen este hermoso deporte.
