So guys the Battlefield Revived program has been shut down by EA till the in-game art and links to EA are removed. So there is hope for a return. In the meantime concider checking out:
    -OpenTTD
    -Path of Exile
    -TF2
All of which nearly made the list. Hope this helps guys.

More freeware, for recording you can also use CamStudio.
Just make sure you have the right codecs :D
Also if Task Manager isn't enough. I recommend "Process Hacker" it gives more in depth view into processes.
Amazing list of freeware, didn't know much of this software was freeware lolz

+Igor Nikolic no it is not. There is a really good video explaining the philosophy of the company and I recommend you watch that, but in shirt WinRAR has an unlimited free trial for normal people, and the paid part is for businesses, because business are legally required to purchase all of their software legally. And normal people do not have to pay, they can just use it

As a Hitfilm user myself I´ll correct you on one thing.. well Hitfilm Express (aka free version) is limited to 1080p not 720p ;)

I have an IBM ThinkPad R50, featuring a 1.4GHz single-core Pentium M, 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, 1GB RAM, and a 1050p IPS display. Cost me $25 complete off eBay. It was designed for Windows XP, but Lubuntu 17.04 is immensely more responsive, modern and secure: Makes this nearly 15 year old mobile hardware feel like a modern netbook. A really big, heavy, cheap one.

Very good video. This is literally gold.
ElementaryOS is a beautiful recommendation, but I would suggest too Lubuntu or Linux Mint as they are excelent distros who can perform flawlessly even in older hardware and are really easy to use.
On the game part I just discovered few time ago Minetest which is basically a free clone of Minecraft with almost every feature you could desire and it works for windows and linux distros.
I know that I discover nothing to no one, but if you would like to play OW but you don't have 60 imperial credits to pay to Blizzard for the effort, well, Team Fortress 2 is still a very enjoyable game which can run in a potato PC.

All Linux needs is more mainstream software support and oh boy, you bet I'd dump Windows faster than you can blink.
I'm one of those people that pirated Vegas. I've got Pro 13.0 installed and love it for the most part. I probably will give KDenLive a go on the Linux side of things since Vegas + Wine = nightmares.
As for Paint.Net, absolute beauty that NEEDS to support Linux. I've tried Pinta, which tries it's best to be a PDN clone, as PDN + Wine = more nightmares.

    • @ChrisD__

Mostly every free game on steam scales well on older pc's :) The "Top Seller" list of f2p games have some pretty awesome games that I often play/used to play (TF2, Smite, Dirty Bomb, Paladins and Path of Exile. Black Squad and Warface are good every now and then). And there's pretty much everything for everyone :p
Ps. for free software I would add Notepad++ as it is very powerful tool, especially when tweaking game settings on .ini and config files for some fps gains (I've been there, many times :D )

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 років тому +2

What is weird is have to drop to 1080p medium settings for Fortnite to keep above 60 fps, yet I can run Crysis 3 at 4k Ultra at about 50 fps (Crossfire obviously since even a GTX 1080ti will only get about 40 fps). I was shocked it takes so much to actually run. (I am getting about 120 fps with that setting, but at 4k medium even its like 45 fps and I can't aim worth a darn with it jumping around and feeling laggy)

But the output is limited and when you push it hard - I tried to a 90+ minute edit on the full version of HF3, it collapses horribly.
As a professional level user, I have been using the free (now full) version of Blackmagic Resolve and I've never looked back. It makes HF look like "My First Editor" - and not in a good way. If you need extra compositing, there's always Fusion but that is beyond most people's abilities and not pleasant to use.

Here's some of my favorite software:
Notepad++: a better take on notepad
ShareX: an open source screenshot/screencasting tool
WinDirStat: open source graphical disk usage analyzer (visualizes used drive space so you can see which files are taking up that precious space)
FurMark: graphics card OpenGL stress and stability test
Prime95: freeware distributed computing program for finding new Mersenne prime numbers, also makes for a good CPU stress/stability test
AIMP: freeware audio player, great if you don't want to spend the time messing with foobar2000
NZXT Cam: free hardware monitor, also has Android and iOS apps to display your PC's hardware usage and temps on a mobile device (I use this over the others because I like the look of the UI), it can be a bit annoying compared to HWMon, CoreTemp and etc. as it requires a login and it consumes a little more resources than those alternatives.

Just wanted to say thanks for the vid, Elementary OS is my first Linux OS and its been really user friendly. Hoping it can help me get some more use out of an older laptop.

For any serious audio work I would recommend Reaper over Audacity. It's a fully functional professional DAW; the only catch being you have to wait 5 seconds every time you start it if you haven't paid for it. Given how much better it is than Audacity I say it's worth it!

For editing software you should definitely check out Davinci Reslolve, RGinHD had talked about it in a video so I tried it. It is very nice and sjmple to use, and even has options to make it look like adobe premiere and other editing softwares.

for video editing you might want to check out DaVinci Resolve. Its free and is as good as adobe premier. Its a professional editor which only has a few minor restrictions like no 3D and beyond 4k support which most people don't need.

Good to know that I'm not the only seasoned PC user to know all of these great programs.
Mbam, or Malwarebytes Anti Malware is a good basic antivirus if you don't want to pay for it even.

I watched this video and realized that I had half of the games already (although I had no idea about Halo...that's getting downloaded)...I don't care about recording or editing video footage so skipped to misc. software...only to realize that I have every single program recommended except Rufus. I do a ton of audio work in Audacity, and also in Fl Studio (but I paid like $150 for that). I would definitely recommend this video to others though...I would also say that some kind of secure deletion utility would be worthwhile...something like CCleaner or FileShredder. If you have ever created a simple file to remind you of some complicated new password, or if you store personal files of a sensitive nature (such as ID stuff or financial data), it's definitely worth it to secure delete them after you've gotten them to an external and safer location.

Blackmagic Design also makes their NLE video editing and motion graphics software freely available: Davinci Resolve and Blackmagic Fusion. They are pro software and need some hefty hardware to run well, though.

For editing, I have a few suggestions:
-HitFilm Express can edit 1080p and is free
-DaVinci Resolve is somewhat easy to run and is very capable.

Another video editor you should try is Davinci Resolve. It's free, and it's very similar to Premiere Pro in alot of aspects. As for an alternative to Photoshop, by far the best one is Krita as it can straight up read .PSD files and acts exactly like Photoshop.

I'd recommend playing Unturned if you haven't heard of it yet. It's a really great game that's free to play. You can support the creator by buying the $5 gold pack if you want to. You might not be interested, but just check a video about it to see if you do.

Very nice and informative video but the content and progress bars in the left of the video a la Gamer's Nexus are a bit too much in the way. Maybe make them show only when a chapter cut changes, or more transparent or smalelr?

Some things you missed or might be useful
Shadowplay if you have nvidea gpu (no fps loss while recording or streaming)
Adobe premiere pro cc17 for editing (If you are in school and have a technology course you can ask for a license key to Adobe and 9 times out of 10 they will provide you with one)

For the record, I've run Windows 10 successfully on a Pentium D many times. Hell, I've gotten it to run on the old Prescott Pentium 4/HT chips. It fell into the "I once knew a girl as ugly as a duck" category of performance.

The only odd recommendation here is Fraps for displaying FPS. MSI Afterburner can do the same thing + show you how much your CPU, GPU is being pushed and how much RAM and VRAM you're using.
