  • Lerotse translated as citron melons not meant for fresh eating, the citrons melons can be used to make thopi as shown on the video or many other things including marmalade, they can also be used as alternatives for tomatoes in green vegetables or can be cut and sun-dried for later use on sun dried green vegetables.
    Growing up eating thophi was a treat and I knew how to prepare it by just observing even though I’ve never cooked it before until now it was so easy and delicious and brought back all the childhood memories and I’m glad that my kids had to eat one of my childhood indigenous food.
    Citron melons are packed with a lot health benefits.
    Ingredients for Thophi( citron melon sweet and sour pap)
    Lerotse( Citron melon)
    Water
    Maize meal
    Sugar
    Tartaric/lemon juice
    Instructions ~ wash your melon, cut the skin out, take out seeds and cut into small pieces and put in your pot add water let it boil until the melon is soft add maize meal using the pap stick mixing together when it’s bubbling close let it cook for about 5 minutes, add sugar and lemon juice or tartaric and more maize meal cook to your preferred consistency, usually it must be in between not too soft or too hard, close and let it cook.
    Dikgopana tsa monawa(Cooked, moulded, and sun-dried beans leaves)
    They are usually prepared differently from each house hold or depending on what’s available then but in most cases they are cooked with citron melon, salt and sun dried for later use they can last years.
    Cooking instructions ~ soak them with hot water, fry your onion, add tomatoes, chillies (optional) and salt then add your soaked monawa and more water let it boil until the water is finished but not dry, this can be served with normal pap also.
