I tried to emulate Edgar Davids every time I played. He was the Pitbull. An absolute dog on the field. With an engine that never gave in. I still have the nickname Vindog now, 25 years after I stopped playing. If only I could have been a small percentage as influencial on the field as he was. He never gave up. That Dutch team he was part of was probably the best team not to win a Copa Mundial. Those Surinamese players just clicked so well for the Dutch national team. If only they could have accepted them. Still goes down as one of my favourite players ever, especially when he was at Juve with Del Piero.

Yeah, same as with strikers such as Haaland, midfielders such as Valverde or other defenders such as VVD. They are rare or even unique now but they were common player types in the 2000s. Football has become much more frail. I’m not going to act like there were no players who were on the softer side back then but today it’s on another level. They’re mostly little princesses now who go to the hairdresser before noon and to the tattoo studio in the afternoon, and cry over tiny things like little girls. Maradona was badly slide tackled by three people in a row and still continued running.

I became a Barcelona fan because of Ronaldinho hype from 2002 WC. Few remember how bad they were until Davids arrived in January. Climbed from like 12th place to 2nd, and then began the Ronaldinho era the next season. Davids indirectly helped to fascilitate Ronaldinho, then Messi, and without him who knows how football would have looked. I'm not exaggerating. Very influential player.

He was my favourite player when I was a kid. I also had to wear (sun)glasses for medical reasons outside doing sports. People often reacted weirdly to it so it was so important to have someone to point to. And I was also doing the most running of all kids - though in contrast to Davids that was because of a lack of technical skills.

I remember playing against Edje as a young kid. One time during Davids Cup, and every now and then he just dropped by and played with us "young kids" on the streets of Amsterdam. It was during his Juventus days. He had lots of love for street football (you could even tell by the way he was playing on the pitch). He did a lot for the culture, and the kids. Davids Cup, Monta, panna-knockout, masters of the game. He gave a lot of us a platform. I got stories for days.

Edgar Davids was one of my favourite players in Italian football. Some time ago, I looked up his career on Wikipedia and was amazed to see the last club he played for was Barnet. I thought that’s got to be the craziest end to a career in football ever. So I started doing some research, which isn’t finished yet, and came across career endings that were even crazier. So far, the craziest I’ve come across is former captain of Brazil Socrates finishing his career for good after coming out of retirement at the age of 50 to play in the 7th tier of English football for Garforth Town, coming on for the last 12 minutes of a match against Tadcaster.
Davids/Seedorf duo was the midfield backbone of Ajax and the Dutch team. Davids never gave up chasing the ball, putting massive pressure on the other team. Called him the pitbull back then.

I've shown my 6 year old grandson videos of Davids. He has been complaining about having to wear sports glasses because of his eyesight as the other kids was making fun of him. He's a fast little player. He won almost every race at his school's sports day last year. In a recent tournament, he carried his team, scoring 7 of his team's 8 goals, including 5 in one game and stopped the best team in the tournament getting a 100% record by scoring an equaliser. His team was the weaker of the club's two teams and the coach was an idiot who clearly had his favourites, so he's moving to another club - and one which even takes the youngsters to tournaments in Europe. He really was carrying that team because none of the other players would run up the pitch with him so he had to do it all himself, something that pissed him off. He's the white, 6 year old Davids. 🙂 I'm just hoping we can keep him going on this trajectory.

A pitbull and one man engine room; but also extremely technically proficient. His technical class made him a tank: not just good, but great in both offense and defense. He could play almost anywhere in the pitch. A legend.
Just a note: the 5th tier, Vanarama National / Conference is not amateur. Most teams are professional, with some being semi-pro. Barnet would have still been fully pro. I think the highest amateur team in the UK is Corinthian Casuals, who are 8th tier.

A bit of a "lost in translation" moment: Reiziger during the Euros in England did not say "We are the cabal" but "We are the cable"... referring to him playing in defense, Seedorf/Davids in midfield and Kluivert up top...they were the "vein" of the team. I remember the situation very clearly, as Hiddink was my favorite coach and having grown up in Eindhoven I did not recognize Bogarde's claim of racism at all. I didn't get it...people with Suriname roots were widely respected in my community, they are the most honest, happiest, genuine people I could imagine. As a kid I couldn't quite fathom that this was not the same everywhere. Bogarde wrote a book about it years later called "This negro bows for no one" that I read and it was a bit of an eye opener. I was very happy that Hiddink and Davids reconciled after the Euros and the coach included him for WC98, he was an absolute star in that tournament.

As a Spurs fan, I remember getting my dad'swoodwork glasses which looked like Edgar David's goggles and wearing them in game he was an absolute legend for us.
Just popped in to say that having lived through the period while Edgar Davids was playing and having just read the thumbnail that I would like to declare that nobody had any question as to his humanity. Cheers.

Edgar Davis with Zidane were so lethal on the pitch together. That’s why Juventus was so dominant at that time . He was one of my favorite player.

Edgar Davids was one of my favourite players in Italian football. Some time ago, I looked up his career on Wikipedia and was amazed to see the last club he played for was Barnet. I thought that’s got to be the craziest end to a career in football ever. So I started doing some research, which isn’t finished yet, and came across career endings that were even crazier. So far, the craziest I’ve come across is former captain of Brazil Socrates finishing his career for good after coming out of retirement at the age of 50 to play in the 7th tier of English football for Garforth Town, coming on for the last 12 minutes of a match against Tadcaster.
When I Played Winning 11 on PS1 I remember him with the glasses and he was really unstoppable. His stats were insane
Davids/Seedorf duo was the midfield backbone of Ajax and the Dutch team. Davids never gave up chasing the ball, putting massive pressure on the other team. Called him the pitbull back then.
Davids had such an engine, like a box to box defensive midfielder, perfect holding playrr for 433.

I've shown my 6 year old grandson videos of Davids. He has been complaining about having to wear sports glasses because of his eyesight as the other kids was making fun of him.
He's a fast little player. He won almost every race at his school's sports day last year. In a recent tournament, he carried his team, scoring 7 of his team's 8 goals, including 5 in one game and stopped the best team in the tournament getting a 100% record by scoring an equaliser. His team was the weaker of the club's two teams and the coach was an idiot who clearly had his favourites, so he's moving to another club - and one which even takes the youngsters to tournaments in Europe. He really was carrying that team because none of the other players would run up the pitch with him so he had to do it all himself, something that pissed him off. He's the white, 6 year old Davids. 🙂 I'm just hoping we can keep him going on this trajectory.

A pitbull and one man engine room; but also extremely technically proficient. His technical class made him a tank: not just good, but great in both offense and defense. He could play almost anywhere in the pitch. A legend.

Just a note: the 5th tier, Vanarama National / Conference is not amateur. Most teams are professional, with some being semi-pro. Barnet would have still been fully pro. I think the highest amateur team in the UK is Corinthian Casuals, who are 8th tier.

A bit of a "lost in translation" moment: Reiziger during the Euros in England did not say "We are the cabal" but "We are the cable"... referring to him playing in defense, Seedorf/Davids in midfield and Kluivert up top...they were the "vein" of the team. I remember the situation very clearly, as Hiddink was my favorite coach and having grown up in Eindhoven I did not recognize Bogarde's claim of racism at all. I didn't get it...people with Suriname roots were widely respected in my community, they are the most honest, happiest, genuine people I could imagine. As a kid I couldn't quite fathom that this was not the same everywhere.
Bogarde wrote a book about it years later called "This negro bows for no one" that I read and it was a bit of an eye opener. I was very happy that Hiddink and Davids reconciled after the Euros and the coach included him for WC98, he was an absolute star in that tournament.
