      Yes, I couldn't agree more! As a huge Deftones fan I always get excited for new music involving Chino but Shaun brings so much to Crosses as well. The two of them seem to really work well together and bring both of their talents together to make some amazing tracks. As you said an instrumental version of this record would be really cool to hear!

    The rapper's name on Big Youth is EL-P, short for his original name El Producto. Dude ran an indie label in the early 00's, and is now a part of Run the Jewels.
    I've been loving this album, and having that rap turn in the middle is great.

    With their EPs they've been putting out there really has been no shortage of Crosses material being put out and this album, or what I have heard of it so far is really them perfecting what they do so well. Most pop I hear is so eye-rollingly derivative, these tracks are ear candy for me.

    Part way through "Natural Selection", I noticed what sounds like a scissor sound effect enter the end of the first chorus and continue into the second verse for a couple of seconds as a percussive element before it gets replaced by a tambourine. Then, when the tambourine effect drops at the end of the second verse, the scissor effect comes back in.
    Sean has such an amazing ear for certain sounds, even sounds you least expect to hear in music. Half of the electronicky sounds you hear in Crosses' music, are also just distorted guitars/basses and other string instruments that are tuned a specific way and put through various pedals and computer-generated effects to create a certain sound (you can see a bit of these behind-the-scenes things on Crosses' and Sean's Instagrams). The end result would make you believe it's just made up computerized effects. It's genius!

    Another great reaction, Molly! This is probably the most outright electronic album Chino has ever made? I really enjoy his vocals over these varying sounds too, but I can see some fans who want more rock/metal vibes from him not being into it. Guess they'll just have to wait until the next Deftones album. My favorites right now are Invisible Hand, Light as a Feather, Big Youth, Ghost Ride, Eraser, Natural Selection and Girls Float † Boys Cry.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  7 місяців тому +5

      Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah this might just be the most electronic thing he's done (that I'm aware of) although their EP last year Permanent Radiant was pretty heavy on the electronic too. Also check out the tracks Appolonia, King Diamond and Mercedes from his other project Team Sleep if you haven't heard them. Some awesome electronic heavy tunes with Chino.
      I'll be completely honest in saying I'm one of those fans that kind of misses the heavy just a bit, I thought that the debut album from Crosses had a bit more of that rock quality that I love. But I think it's cool that Shaun and Chino are going in a totally different direction with Crosses and not getting too comfortable with what they're known for. True artists that embrace experimentation and evolution of their sound.

    • @paroxysm6867
      @paroxysm6867 7 місяців тому +1

      @@mollyesanborn Love Team Sleep! Those songs like Appolonia are on some cyberpunk Blade Runner type of vibe, love it! I think my criticism here, and it's not even a criticism really, is a couple songs from Permanent Radiant were actually good enough to save for the album. But then again we're in the age of streaming and it is kind of cool they are just releasing as much music as possible so can't really complain too much lol. But yeah, the end of Eraser when the guitars kick could have went on for a bit longer and maybe had a couple Chino screams thrown in for good measure!

    I love the way you react to an album. You're not playing too much of it for us. You're stopping to respond to aspects and elaborating on how you're feeling. It's a great review. Definitely a style I appreciate as a music lover. It's a genuine approach. This album is amazing. I've been obsessed with it since I saw it pop up. I had no idea they were working on a full album after their Permanent.Radiant EP. I guess it makes sense, since EPs are good hold-overs, but it came so soon after that EP. A very welcome surprise for me. The production is insane on this album. There's a lot more depth than their first album and I find it hard to go back after putting this one on. It just feels more fleshed out for the concept of Crosses. It makes me feel like this is more than a side project now. I've been waiting for this album since they released the first. Does not disappoint!

    Great video as usual, Molly. I saw a reaction video for "Invisible Hand" and both the UA-cam creator and commentors spent too much time talking about Deftones instead of Crosses. On that track in particular, the familiar essence of Chino's voice comes through. However, what's more significant about Crosses, and this awesome album as a whole, is where the familiar essence of Chino's voice does NOT come through (which I sense is part of what Chino intended with this project). There are some tracks both here and on Permanent Radiant where there's restraint and some gorgeous harmonies that blend so well with the layered electronic textures and rhythms. It shows that Chino's versatility and talent as a singer and musician goes far beyond Deftones. Sure, Crosses sound-wise may not match the musical taste of some metalheads, but I love it when musicians seek creative outlets that they would otherwise not have within the confines of a band. Glad you emphasized that and didn't focus excessively on Deftones.

      Yes, I love that too about Chino and Shaun, how they are clearly experimenting and having fun trying out new things on this project. @mollyesanborn well if you're just sticking to AIC (Layne Staley era) then I think you only have 4 songs that you haven't reacted to. Which are; Little Bitter, What The Hell Have I, Get Born Again, and Died. I don't listen to chains without Layne. It doesn't feel right to me.

      Are you talking about the EP Permanent Radiant? I did check that one out and quite enjoyed it, definitely along the lines of this newest album in terms of how electronic leaning it was. And yeah I miss the bass too, I love that they had a bit of a heavier/more rock leaning sound on their debut album even though the electronic stuff is really cool too.

      @@mollyesanborn Invisible Hand is definitely my favorite on this one. For whatever reason I love listening to that song in the dark late at night, I'm not sure why 😆 The only song I actually disliked was Big Youth, the rap verse from EI-P ruined the whole song for me.
      (Also with me recently becoming a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails, I was wondering if the song Eraser from this album was going to be a cover of theirs 😆😆)

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  7 місяців тому +1

      The rap threw me off a bit too. Not necessarily that I didn't like it, moreso that it seemed out of place on this particular album. And I totally get the late at night thing, Crosses really fits the mood when it's dark out. I love the shoutout for Eraser as well, that'd be cool if they covered NIN at some point!

    Out of all the tracks... 'Girls Float, Boys Cry' was the most disappointing. With Robert Smith in the track i was expecting soo much more. And i agree about El- P taking us out of the Crosses vibe. Those two tracks were the only ones i personally disliked, but the rest of the album is gold.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  7 місяців тому +1

      How interesting, I couldn't disagree more regarding Girls Float Boys Cry, probably my personal favorite track from the album. I was surprised that it didn't feature Robert Smith a bit more but I find it so relaxing and oddly melancholic to listen to, it's got that whole floaty atmosphere to it that I love.

    • @abrimfulofasha
