Pretty much. The 3.5, 3.9, 4.0, 4.3, 4.6...they were all Rover-based. Even the 5.0L used by TVR in their Chimaera and Griffith.

      @@jjames2162 Well, shit...that's unfortunate. :(
      It's a shame, really...I like the engine.
It's easier to understand why most do an LS swap on these Defenders, at least in the US.
In one of their latest videos, Darkside Development did a BMW N57 + ZF 8HP swap on one, which is ironic, since the Ineos Grenadier, said to be the spiritual successor to the original Defender, actually uses BMW powertrains, albeit the more modern B58 gas and B57 diesel units.

The Defender was built in Pretoria, South Africa, with the TD5 mated with the Disco II's autobox for the Aussie military. Apparently this is the only version of the Defender ever made with this combination.
Another interesting South African development of the Defender was the 90 2.8i, fitted with an adapted BMW M50B28TU and 5-speed manual. All of 141 kW and AWD in the shorty body made for a most unlikely performance truck. Scarily rapid, considering that the suspension and brakes were left as with the normal V8. They later received a governor to limit (!) it to 160 km/h...

I have a multitude of Defender experiences in my history, but even with all that exposure still struggle to see the appeal. It's a great off-roader, but hopeless in every other way.
First exposure was a Series III 109 with a Ford Essex 3.0 V6 conversion - all the rage back then in South Africa. The engine was sourced from a Ford Granada, and so the thing became known as the Grover. Still slow, noisy and bumpy, so the original BL 2.6 (?) or four-pot must have been excruciating.
Later in life, a succession of modified Landies came across my path for electronic tuning, and while they were better than the Grover, they were still crude, inefficient, and cramped. That narrow cabin and crude aftermarket air con eats into shoulder and leg space, while the centre console is unnecessarily wide. The ventilation is a joke, everything is hard and brittle plastic on later models, the driveline shunt on manual models are terrible, and they crumble upon rollover. At least the latter can be addressed with a neat roll cage as in the featured car, which does appear to be a very nice example.
I actually drove a Final Edition 110 for a week in its dying year, fitted with the Ford Puma turbodiesel (2.2-litre four) and a six speed manual. While the vehicle was certainly the nicest Defender ever to come from the factory floor, right down to electric windows (more add ons), I just couldn't help thinking that its greatest accomplishment was convincing so many people to keep buying them for 67 years. This zombie lived for four decades too long.
The coolest-looking one was a shorty, kitted out Lara Croft style, with a warmed over 4.6 that went quite well.

I own a 2007 Defender. I know NAS is rare, but Puma is much improved. I think they will be popular in the US.
What makes a landy fun/terrible is a lot of the body designed is very outdated/flawed. Leaks will always come back, which means rust will always come back. Flat doors have no structural strength and are prone to cracking. Aluminium corrodes when it comes in contact with steel and the vehicle is built from aluminium (alloy) and steel. These old style doors that the NAS have are actually steel with aluminium skin, so the door is almost guaranteed to rust out. Ultimately this means the car needs to be rebuilt every 10 to 20 years. Luckily it's quite an easy job as far as rebuilds go and can easily be done at home. Some people even just paint the panels with a brush. There's a guy in my area who as painted an underwater mural on his :/
