  • In early 1931 Ford Motor Company was suffering from the effects of the depression. Sales were dropping and so was their share of the market.
    A plan was hatched to keep the Ford brand at the front of everyone's mind and remind the world of the company's dominance in the history of the automobile.
    On April 14th 1931 a Town Sedan body was dropped onto a chassis at Ford's Rouge Factory in Dearborn and was immediately put out on an 8 month tour of the United States that covered over 30 states and close to 50,000 miles.
    Here's the story of that car and Ford's brilliant marketing plan that followed.

    I grew up about 5 houses down from the owner of this car. His Dad was the one who purchased the car. It was in storage at the family farm for many years, so we never saw it. He was a car guy. Everyone on the street had Impalas and F150's - he drove a Bugeye Sprite.

    I've always loved the Model A. I owned a Model A pickup way back when, sadly, I had to sell it. One of the worst mistakes I ever made! I still have the spare engine I had for it, maybe I'll get lucky and own another A before I meet my Maker!

    I had an opportunity to sit in that at Iola car show before it was roped off from the public, quite an awesome restoration from what I heard.

      Don't forget the later Fords that Edsel was instrumental in bringing to market. Two of the most popular to ever come down the pike were the '32 and the '40.

    I saw this car in Marquette, Michigan shortly after it's restoration and it was stunning. It has since fallen into disrepair due to neglect by the somewhat eccentric owner. Unfortunate.

      I am very, very encouraged to hear this. After speaking personally to the owner, probably four to five years ago now, I got the distinct impression it wouldn't start and was kept in a dirt floor garage. If it is operating and out to be seen, that gives me great hope it will be preserved. @@nancyhaun

      July 8 Manhattan KS
      July 9 Marysville KS
      July 10 Fairview KS
      July 10 Frankfort KS
      There were most likely several more with multiple stops each day.

    Didn't Edsel get a bollocking from Henry for even making the car? Henry couldn't let go of the Model T even though it had long passed its use-by date. The Model A was deemed unnecessary by old Henry because the T was still selling and didn't need a replacement...

    • @logotrikes
      @logotrikes Рік тому +4

      Henry brought cars to the masses but he had very sketchy political leanings, not the least of which was a business and personal relationship with Adolf Schickelgruber....
      He also interfered with social engineering of his workers, telling them how to live their lives and spend their wages.
      He was far from the rosy vision that we generally have of the man. Not a nice person by any means, his impact on society notwithstanding....

    • @AModelA
      @AModelA  Рік тому

      The slant windshield body styles (Victoria and Sedans) didn't have the external visor on it like other closed car models. They did have visors on the inside of the car much like modern cars. In 1932 all the Ford bodies adopted this this design.
