Another major reason why I think she's so universally liked is because she is also a competent and morally wrong character. She is introduced and treated as harmless and innocent, but we later learn that she is in fact very determined and not afraid to get what she wants despite the cost. She basically gets to function in the story as both an ally to the protagonist and a very interesting antagonist with solid and very understandable motivations. People always like a good antagonist, often more than the actual protagonist and Marcy basically got to eat the cake and have it to.
People also like characters that are important to the plot since for many people, the plot and story is the most interesting part of a show and we connect and care more about the characters that continuously drive the story forward. Marcy is *very* important to the story, and I would argue that the main theme and point of the entire story is the most applicable to her character arc and her part of the wider story. Her naivety made her get ahead of herself and her character arc really deals with the toxicity of her friendship with Sasha and Anne. She's also hinted at being a broken character who clings onto a friendship that's not really true. The show's message and theme of "you need to let go" is especially relevant to her.
This also makes her a very complex character, which is something I think people also generally like.

Indeed. Marcy is my favorite character bc in some way i relate to all her loneliness, i probably would do the same thing she done in some moments in my life that i was scared ou confused. Nothing justifies what she done but its understanble WHY she done
I think people like her because of that too. She is very relatable and misunderstood, by her friends, but at the same time, she is flawless and had a short - but solid - redemption arc (rly short, like 5 minutes. She has less timescreen than sasha)

Honestly what's not to like about her? Marcy is nerdy, quirky and obsessed with her hobbies, like the quintessential character that represents the entire fandom even. A lot of us can relate to her oh so well, from her personality traits to the constant struggles of having to fit into societal norms. It's because of her that many have come to appreciate and love who they are for what they are💚

Even after what she did, I never held it against her. No offense to other creators, but sometimes cartoon characters feel too good. Kids make mistakes. They’re selfish, bratty, misunderstood. Sometimes they don’t realize the consequences of their actions until it smacks them in the face. I love seeing a character that acted so much like I did at that age and is still endearing to watch.

I also fall on the spectrum, but I have never liked a character just because they happen to fall in some arbitrary group that I'm also part of. It's her qualities that, for example makes her a nerd (just like me), that make me relate to her. I like to appreciate characters like the human beings they are meant to represent, not by their affiliation to a category they belong to.

    • @floor_tile
      @floor_tile Рік тому +2

@8is that makes a lot of sense. I don't think you were trying to accuse me of something, but just in case, her showing signs of atusim(sorry, I can't spell) isn't why I like her as a character.

    • @8is
      @8is Рік тому +2

@@floor_tile I am not accusing you of anything xD. I am simply expressing my opinion that the only way to treat characters, and human beings in general, that makes sense is to treat them like individuals and not by group affiliation. I don’t like the tribalistic nature of how people talk about these characters or the general politics around them, which this video falls victim to. There is nothing special about a character being neurodivergent because every individual is unique regardless of their group affiliation. I like to appreciate people for who they are rather than their groups, especially if that individual had no choice but to be part of a certain group.

Yeah I will admit, Marcy was a character I could relate to a lot as someone who has communication issues, but not just that, I found Marcy to be adorable, sweet, and sort of helpful to me throughout season 2, (season 3 I had minor issues on the fact we really don’t see her much and I feel she needed more screen time).
I’m going to be writing a show focused on the character this summer (just a fun project, nothing too serious) and the number one thing I want for this is to capture the character I found to really love and appreciate. This video to me helps because sometimes I forget something or another and for this in particular, I want to ensure (if the scripts ever get made which is an eventual goal) that people could relate and appreciate this just as I do.

I'm not autistic, but I am neurodivergent, and as such, see myself a lot in Marcy, which is why I love her so much. Like her, I love a lot of very niche media, is sociable but still kind of nervous around others, and is very absentminded. And I also relate to her feeling alone in her love of the niche media she likes. Marcy is just such a fun, sweet, and relatable character that I really see myself in.

From the first time I saw Marcy, I immediately saw me in her! I got so excited over seeing a geeky, escapist and energetic girl like me on a show I was starting to enjoy, and honestly, I guess Marcy made me love Amphibia even more! She is probably the character whom I have the strongest connection to in animation, and that makes her one of my all-time favourites.
When the show was nearing its last episodes, I wasn't having the best time with my friend group. I didn't feel included, or appreciated. Seeing Marcy go through a similar experience like that gave me the courage to realise the friends I had at the time weren't true, for me, and therefore I realised I was eventually going to find friends whom I truly had a strong connection with. So honestly, yeah, I am a Marcy stan through and through, but if you don't like her, that's okay, I'll understand why

I like Marcy, she's a great character and she's also my fav character from Amphibia because I can kinda relate to her. I'm probably not exactly what would be considered a "nerd" but I do love to overanalyse things that I find interesting and sometimes when I'm really obsessed with something, I can't stop talking about it, just like Marcy. (And sometimes I talk so much about stuff I like that other people try to tell me to stop lol.) I also love playing games, watching shows, and sometimes I'm really tempted to explain the whole lore of my fav shows and video games to my friends. And I'm also shy and a bit awkward when it comes to talking to new people. Everyone expected me to be immediately sociable, so when Marcy said that she's shy and "can't even look people in the eye sometimes" (in her journal she also mentioned that she wasn't great at public speaking), I found out that I relate to her even more than I thought.

If I had a nickel for every time a 13-year-old was possessed in a kids cartoon, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird because it happened twice! First with Ty in Grossology, and then with Marcy in Amphibia. Plus, I definitely know how Marcy felt with that helmet lowered on her head. I felt the same way at Stitch’s Great Escape. They had those very uncomfortable shoulder restraints that hurt sooo bad. I felt sooo uncomfortable with the restraints lowering on us…I had that same uncomfortableness Marcy had. The moment the helmet lowered, I got Stitch’s Great Escape flashbacks when the restraints lowered, I got so scared. Marcy is definitely one of my favorites in Amphibia.

Marcy was an interesting character. I fell in love with her because the way she approached the planters when meeting them is exactly how I approach anybody I meet and find even just a little trustworthy. She was showering them with a random stream of consciousness about her favorite media trope (found family). As someone who was (is?) smart as a kid I wish I could learn the way she does. She cares about something and doesn't stop (all I've ever really cared about were cartoons, which are inappropriate, and mental health, which stresses me out.) And obviously, all that was happening in Amphibia, her dream world but she got to be herself. And she had at least one friend who just didn't care that she was different. (As of last year, I also have one of those, but for most of my life, I was the odd one out and could only be "friends" with other outcasts of school society.) So yeah. Personality, but also, she's just a weirdo. And she took it and ran with it. (I've also moved around with my family a lot so that part was relatable to me too.)
Sorry for this random trauma/thought dump. I will now retreat into my head and have conversations with fictional characters. Have a good day.
EDIT: 9:17 I have actually been told that twice this year. (well not move on but that a "normal person would have reacted differently")

One thing I appreciate about Marcy is that she wasn't originally designed to be autistic/neurodivergant. I remember reading on the wiki that, I believe around the second season, a group of psychologists essentially "diagnosed" her as being on the spectrum. I always think it's so much more "organic", for lack of a better term, when a character is made and ends up being autistic, rather than being autistic from the get-go. There are a few other media that do this, many of them are partially autobiographical stories where the creators discovered they themselves were on the spectrum, and I always appreciate it. Even The Ghost and Molly McGee's June Chen felt a little... forced. Then again, I also liked Extraordinary Attorney Woo, so who knows.

As someone on the spectrum, a big hell yeah to that! I think a part of Marcy's particular appeal is she's a Neurodivergent-coded character written as just a lovable character who has these traits. For a long time any sort of Autistic coded character was written as a spectacle, the writer essentially telling the audience "hey get a load of this weirdo". Sometimes it was "their mind works in mysterious ways" in a Sherlock Holmes style character, sometimes their Autistic traits were the butt of a joke like in the big bang theory. Marcy is one of a more recent crop of Autistic characters meant to be understood, who's traits aren't some weird ability nor silly handicap, but a neutral set of traits for good and ill. Shoutout to Delicious in Dungeon for also getting this recently, but it makes for much more relatable TV, especially for folks like myself who find it harder to get into the heads of neurotypically written characters

as someone who is literally marcy, i find it weird that i dont get obsessed with her like others.
i am academically smart but i goof off a lot, i get obsessed with fictional media like video games and shows, i am VERY clumsy, i have a hard time connecting to new people, and ive been labelled multiple times by neurodivergent people as 'i dont know what u are , but youre def not neurotypical'. so yeah, i should find marcy very relatable. but.. i dont. i still find her relatable and loveable ofc, but not as much as other people. i find myself more drawn to anne and sprig..
im not really sure why its like that for me. my guess is that anne and sprig have a sense of averageness. idk how to explain it but they kind of act like how most people would act in their situations. basically, for me, marcy has the more *character traits* that i identify with but anne and sprig's *actions and reactions* are what i find more relatable.
another guess as to why i dont love marcy as much as anne is because i find myself identifying with anne's character arc more than marcy's. at the start of the show, anne doesnt appreciate the things she has like her parents and her community and she doesnt put much effort into anything meaningful which is very similar to how i was during the pandemic. but then she learned to appreciate and care for everyone and everything around her more sincerely and idk, that just hit hard for me. marcy started out attention-starved and a lil selfish as a result and learned to be able to confront herself and others and take responsibility. not too different from anne's but different enough for me. i think if i watched amphibia earlier (around 2020-2021), i wouldve related to marcy more but since i was introduced to it during 2022, i ended liking anne and sprig more...
all the amphibia characters are great but yea, i like anne and sprig more than marcy. its just personal preference and the reasons why i dont find marcy ad relatable as i should. anyways, this comment has gotten a lil too cheesy so byeeeee

I love Marcy because of the fact she is a lot like me and my closet friend (Mainly her) and it feels so heartwarming to see someone who is like us be portrayed as a lovable character when we are so used to seeing people put us down for our autistic traits. It’s kinda like Marcy for us is a living reminder that it’s okay for us to be the way we are.

I'm autistic myself, and I see some traits in her that I see in myself. I'm not good at connections with people (I can barely look people in the eyes sometimes), I am easily fooled or duped like Marcy was with Andrias, I am big into different hobbies and games; I can go on and on. Still, I am more of an Anne fan than Marcy.

Being quite the autistic nerd myself, I was already sold on the unofficially autistic, nerdy, gamer, fantasy, etc. stuff, but the third wheel treatment portrayed in TBotE was the horrific last straw of relatability that made me invest more into any character than I have ever invested into any work of fiction before in my life.

I AM Marcie and Sasha combined. Literally. I am one of the best in my class, rebellious, envious, autistic, very clumsy and a bit too clingy
    i guess...
I relate much to Cass from TTS and Luz too but whenever i see Marcy or Sasha on screen i get so emotional like practically never...
I just wanna watch season 2 and 3 fully and not just some clips😭

Okay, that is hilarious xD. Honestly, you should look into American history and specifically the immigration waves and the cultural makeup of America. It's fascinating stuff and it's really fun to pick up on a Disney cartoon character's heritage and immediately get an idea of where they probably live, how many generations ago that characters ancestors moved to America, how many generations ago English became that lineage native language and a general idea of how assimilated that character is.

So it's clear that Marcy is a character who is well written rather than any other protagonist of Amphibia well if I were to be honest there is another show which is like Amphibia but with different story different characters but it can be considered an equivalent of Amphibia and that is the Owl house I I am a fan of that as well so basically you can call me a dual fan who likes both the Owl house and Amphibia I wanted to ask this from you all if Marcy is the most liked character in Amphibia can you tell me which character from the Owl house can be Marcy's equivalent who is smart and have lot of interest just like Marcy considering the fact that both series have characters who share same mentality in some cases same behaviour and traits believe it or not.

So I’m actually very certain that Marcy is autistic, that’s why I related so much to her since I am autistic. That’s why I related so hard to her when she chose to trap her friends in Amphibia. In fact, I probably would’ve done the same thing she did if I had to leave my friends like that. Change is scary and hard for some of us, so I don’t blame her. Yes it’s wrong, but she did what she felt she had to do to never be alone. Since Marcy has been friends with Anne since about age 6, it would make sense to not wanna leave one of the few people you’ve known for so long. It also wouldn’t surprise me if she went undiagnosed and so people didn’t know how to help her with this big and overwhelming feeling. This is why Marcy Wu is my favorite character. She is pretty much me and so I love her so much for that.

Hot take but I just can not find it to like Marcy. She feels like the kind of character I can relate too: She’s funny, quirky, socially awkward. But She doesn’t feel like a real person. I know she is Autistic and I am autistic as well. Except Matt Braly stated Marcy wasn’t made to be Autistic. The crew just said she was after she received so much positive acclaim from the fandom.
The reason I dislike Marcy is because it feels like her quirks are her entire personality. Common Autism stereotypes include being geniuses and having super obscure special interests.
While I super obscure interests myself (Wild Animals and certain Lego themes, I don’t like RPGs or Anime, which I am turned off by to be honest). But seeing Marcy brain her way through everything is frustrating because it enforces that stereotype, and for me, who was held back a year, and cannot handle any class harder than standard makes seeing this kind of representation frustrating.
Marcy has some moments of depth such as in True Colors but it is barely explored and we don’t really see how that impacts her relationships. Honestly, in the scavenger hunt episode, Anne felt more relatable to me than Marcy because I also struggle with feelings of inadequacy around others who I feel are smarter and more capable than me. I don’t see Anne as autistic herself, but she embodies the struggles of a Aspie like me can feel, where we are capable enough to function but not near the level of our peers. This feeling of inadequacy is why I’m glad Anne is the main protagonist as it is a breath of fresh air to see this kind of problems being portrayed.
I also envision Luz as being Autistic herself, and we see her own interests impact her ability to connect with her own peers in healthy ways. So she doubles down on said interests to cope.

I don't see her solving all of her problems with her brain as a problem, since that's quite an important thing in the series, the three main characters represent compassion, intelligence, and strength, with marcy representing intelligence. I guess I also don't see her fitting the stereotypes of a nerd perfectly as being a bad thing considering that I relate to that

5:04 Mostly than autistic, Marcy posses classic neurodivergent traits.
She's actually gifted, a nature that is normally confused or misdiagnoses with autism and/or ADHD due with the lack of info neurotypicals have.
Once you know what giftedness really is or once you find out you're gifted, recognicing gifted characters or real life gifted people is easy.
We all are kinda similar like all the poppies, all the wolves or all the rainbows.
I was also called autistic through my entire life (almost everyone who know me still believing I'm autistic and retarded because of my naive goofy kind personality), but it happens to be that I'm just a perfectly average gifted girl, like our dearlove Marcy:
Curious about everything, very creative, independent, clever, hyperlogical, emotionaly intense, highly sensitive, absent-minded, pretty intuitive, fish-out-of-water craving for deep true relationships that relief her feeling of not-belonging and social traumas...
Search for Linda Silverman or Jean Siaud-Facchin books or interviews, they explain it better than I.

Good video, but I've got a question still.
That site you showed says thay fictophilia is not only about extreme desires, but also romantic love and strong affection. So mayhaps it isn't just for creeps who are too obssesed, but overral people who have fictional crushes.... and I want to make sure you know this since the way you phrased it at first could still cause that misconception that always happens with stuff like this. Atleast to me, just know I tend to overthink/misunderstand social cues in these times.
