  • How to layout and line for high school track and field discus athletic competitions with tape measures and string. Utilizing aerosol field marking paint from Pioneer Athletics. The same process can be used for shot put if you divide all of the measurements used by half. The arc is the same for shot, but the distance is less. If you have 100 foot of distance for your shot put area you could just use this method with the distances displayed here.

    Great detailed, accurate video! That is the best looking, well maintained sector turf I have seen.
    Many throwers, coaches and spectators would appreciate showing school groundskeepers the NEXT step in painting lines. That being marking the distance arc lines. So so many schools continue on and put a line for distance using the screwdrivers at 100' on the sector lines. This ends up with a line that will measure about 95' 11" during the competition. In competition, marks are measured from the ring, not the center. So the 100' painted arc should be 104' 1.25" from the center of the ring. I hope you got the next step right 😉

      If you look in the video, when I run the string, I went past the 100’ screwdriver about 35-50 feet and then proceeded to paint. We have painted arc lines in the past but only when requested for big events or regional meets. I do believe they usually manually measure each throw for most meets. Thanks for commenting, if we get a request for arc lines in the future I will post a video. Please like and subscribe. Thanks!!!!

      @@mrbigdws29 I just google mhsaa discus measurements. The dimensions are half for shot put. Our shot put area is large so I just use the full size shown in video.

    The diagram showed that the distance between two sides is equal to 60 percent of the length of 1 side. 100 ft on one side, 60 percent of it is 60 ft

    One question. If a thrower throws 100 feet that means they have 60 feet to work with to stay in the sector. But when you measure a throw you don't measure from the middle, so if you measure out both sector lines 100 feet from the edge of the ring and measure across the distance is a bit more than 60 feet, correct?

      @CREENBIRDVideos  Рік тому

      The throw is measured from the ring. The vector layout is measured from the center. The thrower would technically have a little bit more than 60 feet width at 100 feet. I always make the vector 25 feet or so longer after layout.

    Do you you make the angle line

      I only paint the two vector lines. I usually make them 125-150 feet long for discus and 75-100 for shot put.
      Some people paint distances from the ring.

    You do this in the shot put area as well ?

    • @CREENBIRDVideos
      @CREENBIRDVideos  Рік тому

      Yes, it’s the same arc. You can divide all measurements by 2 or half and it will work exactly the same. I usually make it 100 feet, because we have the space. If your throw area is too short make it half or 50. Thanks for watching!

      @@CREENBIRDVideos So it would be 15 ft from each of the sides, instead of 30 ft, correct?

      @@shavarcowherd2194 Yes, correct. Every dimension is half when making the shot dimension of 50.

    The paint line should be layed down on the outer edge of guide line, not centered. The paint line is foul, thus if a portion is on inside of guideline it is guide line, it is not correct
