Most Americans know that Audie Murphy was the "most decorated" soldier of WWII. President Carter once referred to Matt Urban as "the greatest American combat soldier" but not the "most decorated."
Presidents Reagan and Clinton have referred to Audie as the "most decorated" and now on two occasions President Obama has as well.
That I think should end the story, as one would think that as Head of State the American President is the authoritative voice of the American government.
