I recently did the journey from Bath, UK to Ljubljana, Slovenia in a 243,000 miles Mercedes E280CDi - now that, caused me anxiety. But she didn't miss a beat and has just flown through its MOT! Much more fun in an older car.
Ed H Haha good stuff! I did it a couple of years ago in a £500 165,000 miles C220. Always more fun in something older with no guarantee you’ll make it 😂
old Benz diesels are brilliant
I bought a 2013 E Class Coupe with 109k miles on the clock and drove it straight home to Southern Spain. No problems - thank goodness.
If you're paying £50 a casio watch with a rubber strap you're getting done mate.
Frostpunk I didn’t realise they were only £15 😂
Not for a G-Shock though...
Paid 7.99 for mine 8 years ago. Still going strong on its original battery....
£7.99 !! You can buy a watch for that !
Being from the other side of the world I love road trip vids. My dad used to renew a subscription to Car magazine for me every Christmas going way back and a big part of the enjoyment was the road tests as road trips. I got to know Europe & the UK from the other side of the world. Combining your usual review style would be a good combo with road trips. That's the only thing I thought was missing from this one - the full run down of Ravs in general.
Btw that sun visor thing must be a Toyota thing. Have had several do that and have learned to silicon spray the hinged pin side to reduce the force that (in my cases) cracks the plastic friction mount.
I have done that trip twice recently and will do it again in August. I enjoyed it but had to listen to an audio book to reduce the boredom at times. VWPassat diesel auto 2020 model average mpg 75. Speed around 70 mph but no faster
Once again , nice video. It was funny you mention ..` I would not do the trip on a 2004 Freelander`..... i did!!!
Yeovil - Plymoouth-----30 hurs Later (Ferry)....Santander-Lisbon (Sintra)
Only 4 months after i got it nooooo service history , just replace the disk brakes , the brake switch ...8 oil changes, all fluids.....And it did it without any issue or light .
Once again thank You for the video
Thanks for sharing!
I used to be sceptical about Japanese car reliability, until I bought a Honda accord for my wife as a run around, bought with 127,000 on the clock when that sort of mileage was considered high, ended up keeping the car for 4 years and it was impeccable, never used a drop of oil and received a lot of use including towing. On the strength of the reputation my dad bought an accord exec (2001 model) in 2004 and sold it about a year ago, and never replaced a light bulb, ever thing still worked at 17 years old; A/C (never re-gased), heated seats, memory seats etc, again never used any oil, no rust simply unburstable even when 17+ years old. Same appears true for Toyotas, both makes designed for the searing heat of the middle east/Arizona etc, so able to take the European climate in it's stride.
Watching this video my first thought was i'd rather do the road trip in an Accord as an old cheap Japanese car.
You said you are not very good at this Vloggin thing, but I enjoyed it very much. Look forward to the next Uk - Spain journey with whichever car it is you choose...
Thanks! I appreciate it :)
I had one of these like you say they are a reliable gets you from A-B car , have to admit didn’t like the gear box and driving around the Peak District you certainly had to watch you speed around the bends other than that no complaints, I know have a freelander 😂 it’s more enjoyable to drive being a Auto but i certainly don’t get 45 to the gallon the computer sez under 30 tho I have a suspicion that’s not reading correct and with no service history it’s cost be a fortune in repairs , tho it was ment to have it , lesson learned don’t buy a car and have it delivered unseen . This is a Journey I’ve always fancied tho on my own feels a little daunting. One day maybe
If you service it and do maintenance the car will outlive you. I daily a 2001 Camry 2.2, absolutely bullet proof. 😀
I agree!
Have spent the darkest days of winter in Spain since I retired 5 years ago its just superb. Through about taking the car but 4 days I'm to old now. However why are Toyota's so reliable you never see on on a rescue truck? Great video as well.
This Rav4 did end up on a recovery truck the last time I visited, but only turned out to be a camshaft sensor
Another great video Neil - apologies, as I’m catching up. I’ve done a similar “pilgrimage” down to the Algarve, taking a LHD Chrysler Grand Voyager with similarly dubious history down to my folks. It never missed a beat at all during the three years it was out there. I did switch routes though and used the overnight cruise ferry from Portsmouth down to Santander which made/makes life a little easier - not sure if you’ve tried it?
Judging by the MOT history it seemed to be a well cared for car. Never failed a MOT, but had a odd advisory here and there.
Looks like the MOT ran out in Feb 2020 - has it now died (sad face)
What car would you recommend for me to travel through to Gambia West Africa ?
Please upload more videos!! Great channel!
Rob Scott Thanks! More on the way!
Keeping it real! Just done a 10 hour road trip in a Dodge Grand Caravan from Jackson Wyoming to Fernie b.c. can’t fault the car and it’s layout. Made me think about trading in my c4 grand Picasso for a Chrysler grand voyager? Love your content too.
jonathan harris cheers! A Dodge Journey might be a better choice unless you need the extra space 👍🏻
Hi mate I just came across your channel. Given you have done Manchester to Malaga countless times. What do you think is the best route overall from Manchester to Malaga? Thanks
Wich hotel did you stay?
How old are you currently?
Must be a reliable car
I'm planning on driving to Granada, Spain in my 1987 Ford Granada Scorpio at some point.
I don't think that it will break down but it may need some welding mid-journey.
Lewis72 😂
@Immortal
I shall do !!
Which I'd done a vlog of some of my previous journeys.
Munich to Budapest by train.
Graz to Grenoble by car.
Hull to Norwich in a newly bought 1970 Stag at 11pm.
I had one in 98 for fifteen min. Just literally picked it up and drove up the road before white smoke and no gears....
Great to see you back Matt. I was starting to get worried. 😂😂😂
Brian Morrissey Thanks! I’ve had a very busy month but I’m back at it now 👍🏻
Matt is back in town ( Love him to bits )@@HighPeakAutos
Just proves you don't need to change your car every 3 to 5 years for the newest status symbol on the drive, probably more eco friendly than a newer car by virtue of the fact it's paid for several years ago
Lloyd Anstice Exactly! That’s a fact most people forget when thinking of the environment
Yep definitely. Best thing you can do for the environment is to drive the car you have right now, for as long as possible, as efficiently as possible. Of course if you have a 4.2 V8 Range rover, you would be better switching to a more economical car but for 80% of cars which are "normal", it hold true.
I've got a 2009 2.0 diesel Peugeot 407 Coupe. Weighs 1650kg. I had a hire 2017 Ford Mondeo Hybrid which also weighs 1650kg. Took it on the same journey as the 407 (60mph, efficient driving as possible). The Ford got 42mpg. The 407 gets 61mpg in that same journey.
High Peak Autos yet,the government will still tax the bejeezus out of it
My car is 8 years old and works perfectly and drives just as well as it did when it was new, it’s got 61,000 miles on it which isn’t bad. I have seem much newer cars with higher mileages.
@@forza223bowe5 that's a new car, barely run in, mines 13yrs old 130,000 goes like stink lol can't see a good enough reason to change it...apart from the rip off road tax
In Ireland you'd be called a "Fair Operator" trust me that is the highest compliment to get. Your car reviews are brilliant and very welcome during this lockdown. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! I appreciate it. Take care :)
Man, I brought a 1998 Toyota Corolla Liftback with 320.000km (4E-FE 1.3L engine) from Madeira Island to Lisbon and crossed Europe all the way to Krefeld in Germany! 0 faults at all! Still driving it today as my daily driver 😊
Great vlog.. good job you weren’t in a Range Rover you wouldn’t have got to Dover without breaking down.!!!!
Really, a friend of mine went to Marbella and back in a Range Rover no problem
Lucky man, he should have bought a lottery ticket as well.
Lol
Yes but you can break down in style
Maybe look after a car the
Nice video but man could of been a lot more interesting! Def could of been a million plus video but it was like we only got half the trip and half the story.
Rev up your engines!
Peter Owen 😂 Yes!
I was in Cambodia last winter. They've all got Toyotas.
Usually end of life California exports that just keep going without maintenance.
Have just checked and have noticed that you have two thumbs down for this video Matt !!!!!!!! can only think that it is from the bloke that sold you the car and his wife 😜😜😜 His wife mainly giving him grief saying " why did you sell that lovely car so cheaply, I told you it only needed an oil change and that car would have got us to the south of Spain hassle-free"😜😜😜😜
stevie 007 haha must be!
the new diesels are rubbish with the dpf in them. You have to do one trip on a motorway above 80kph once a week so it doesn't clog up. the environmental restrictions on the companies is fierce. Older diesels are extremely efficient, reliable. Those old Toyotas won't miss a beat
If you can find an old Toyota Crown Majesta, about 10/12 years old, try it
Alan B'Stard M P I agree! This was before the days of DPF etc
Gerard O'Brian A Yaris is a safe bet although they can still suffer from timing chain issues but generally they’re very reliable
50 quid for a casio? I got mine for 8.99 in argos lol
HAYDNBBH no you didn’t
HAYDNBBH no he said “you wouldn’t fancy a 50 quid watch if you have a casio”
9 bricks from Argos! I paid £900 for my G-Shock Frogman 🐸
I meet this guy in the south of Spain, he was staring in, a Spanish Butlins.
He was singing I'm no stranger to cars, you know the rules and so do I.
We were glad to see him drive back to Yorkshire
1:37 I liked the Scotty kilmer reference 😂😂
Xenon Games Haha Cheers 😉
Toyota's are just bullet proof. Nice change of pace from your normal videos.
The petrols are big the diesels. Of this vintage were prone to head gasket problems.
Me and my mate did the same trip in 1974 in a early sixties Singer Gazelle bought for 40 quid. We did a 5000 mile round trip. The car went like a dream. We even slept in it most nights. Mind you, l wouldn't recomend it. The last time l saw him was when he dropped me off my house all those years ago.
Like Brian I was wondering where you were, welcome back Matt.
This is testament to Toyota's total reliability, very enjoyable journey.
Cheers
Mike
Mike Waldt Thanks for watching!
Good to know those RAV4s are still going strong. I owned an ex demonstrator 53 plate when it was new for three years and it was faultless except the drivers sunvisor dropped like yours so it must be a design fault. (I was told by the dealership a replacement was £50 so I left it). Enjoy Spain!
Haha it must be a common issue then. Its surprising because the rest of the car is reliable and fault-free
What is it with Roadtrips now? First HubNut and now you 😃 Good to see you in Holiday mode. It’s such a good feeling taking a chance on an unknown and being pleasantly surprised 👍🏻
Did it with a Mondeo Diesel , and 20 gallons of cooking oil ,
Nice one '
Great vid ...
Cafe con Leche , know that :)
You my spiritual Son :)
Keep them coming
I know what this feels like. I've driven from up near Preston to the Algarve in Portugal a fair few times in a 2003 Kia Shuma II. Its possibly the most drab car I've ever driven, but somehow I admire its determination to just keep going. Its never missed a beat and I've inherited it from my parent's now so still run around in it occasionally. I did make the trip a bit easier on myself by getting the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander though. Taking that route means its possible to do it in 2 days instead of 3, even in a Kia Shuma!
Yeah I've done that ferry trip a couple of times, but I don't like being on the ferry for that length of time - especially in winter when the bay of Biscay is rough
@@HighPeakAutos I know what you mean. It can get rough. I couldn't sit in the bar on the ferry watching the plunge pool slosh about for long before having to leave....
Exactly the journey I want to do, my wife isn't so keen though. She can go on the plane with the kid's, and I'll have a great 1600 mile journey in peace and quiet!
Stuart Day Haha exactly! I quite like the peace and quiet 😂
@@HighPeakAutos Also would be great to spend a couple of weeks in a villa and not be limited to a 25Kg luggage restriction, and the usual airport stresses too.
Do it! The main roads in France and Spain are smooth and generally quieter than UK and relaxed in Spain and you'll see so much more of these countries.
Looks like more big business for China and Russia.
The US has been planning this for years. CoVid wasn't enough. This is just a practice run.
Did someone say, they're coming for you. He's just in their way?Looks like more big business for China and Russia.

Well done .You must like driving 🚗 alot. If you wanted to go on to drive through North Africa would it be possible to gon on further to Gambia in West Africa 🌍
Enjoyed that - thank you Matt. I drove from Madrid to Malaga in a battered old Fiat 126 in the 1980's, so I was rather envious of you in that lovely Toyota Rav!!! atb snack.
I was just catching up on some of your previous posts and this reminded me of when I lived and worked not far from Malaga. Brave of you to tackle the journey in such an old vehicle, although I suspect the Jet2 737 I flew to Malaga on in February was considerably older!!!
Haha thats right
I`ve done that trip (or the one via Milau) some 68 times in the last 17 years. 62 of those tips were completed in my 2003 E Class Auto Diesel Estate averaging 55mpg.It has just returned from its last trip and has now completed 259,000 miles.
meanwhile that's a short drive in the US (10h and you'll still be in the same state like Texas or California)
Lovely, smashing, great 💖💖💖💖💖💖 We have the best car reviewer back on u-tube. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 Kindest regards Steve.
stevie 007 Cheers Steve!
Love it! Told my kids we are going to Corfu next year....haven’t told them yet that we’ll be driving there. Should be fun
Pretty solid car ,that's why scotty kilmer loves them ,you need one hear in Africa especially in kenya ,trip from Mombasa to capital Nairobi with no problems at all with one full tank,,,pretty economical too and need less maintenance and cheap spare parts , Africa in general will always use a Toyota ,though landrovers are better in performance and very comfortable the only problem is unreliable , anyway that's my opinion good job
Good to see you back fella 👍
What can I say Rav 4 👍👍
I live in the south I could of joined you and split the driving.
I have a RAV4 that looks just like this one 16 years old, 236tkm. It is a 2.0i 150ps version, 4wd with a 5sp still runs like a clock, no oil burning, excellent in deep snow and muddy forest trails. Going to be hard to find as good of a replacement for it when the time comes. Thinking of a newer Suzuki Vitara 4wd 1.4 turbo not sure if it would be worthy, but will see...
Excellent vid again thoroughly enjoyed. That has given me the push I need my brother lives in Prague, I'm going to drive it. Cheers ;-)
The service history may be missing but the surface history looks great for a fifteen year old
I'm on my 7th Toyota hybrids and diesels I do 30k a year never had any issues with any of them 👍
The only car I would buy is a Toyota or Lexus.
Enjoyed the video. Looks like Scotty was right about Toyota reliability.
Thanks!
My Toyota Yaris is 16 years old and im going to sound like Scotty Kilmer here, but for how long i have had it it has been the most reliable car i have ever had. If it ever packs up then i will definitely by another. But at the moment there are no signs of that ! Toyota’s are the most dependable vehicles on the market, sure they are not as desirable as a Merc or a BMW or a Range Rover but it will never leave you stranded.
Source : my family have been in the vehicle repair business for over 40 years.
Im glad the Old Rav4 made it what a great well engineered vehicle 😀👍
I agree with you... However this Rav4 is currently sitting on my driveway refusing to start. I'm hoping its just a blocked fuel filter or something else easy and cheap to repair
Damn I jinxed it! 😩 hopefully so, the best thing is that they are quite a common vehicle so parts should be relatively inexpensive.
Love the different style of video! Recently drove over 2,500 miles in a week from Bath to Inverness and back via Kent in my '05 Ford Fiesta with 120,000 miles. Didn't miss a beat! Shows what cheap cars can do if pushed! Love the channel - keep it up! 😊
Ben Andrews Thanks for watching! I agree 😉
Ah, glad to see that you are into this sort of thing! Great video, thank you ever so much indeed for this.
Excellent - A RAV4 is bullet proof - but won't pick up the birds
Oh yes it will. On the front grille.
@@KnightFace3000 lol
The woman who does, is a keeper then ;-)
Did this in an equally old RAV 4 but then took it on to Eastern Ukraine where I delivered it to the Ukrainian Army. The tenths journey so far. A wheel fell of one, tyres rubbed on another, DPF censor clogged on third but all ended up OK
Nick
lovent never go wrong with Toyota they're solid engineering I love them
The now wife (who's from Malaga) and I did this about 10 years ago but from Liverpool. Peugeot 406 coupe which had a few problems going into the journey. En route the catalytic converter broke down. Going downhill was fine but going uphill the cat would roll backwards and block the exhaust. We had to stay in the worst hotel - live shorting electric wires sticking out of the walls - whilst we got it repaired. Two kids later and we just fly it now. Definitely want to drive it again though.
Where about in Málaga are you staying?
Hey
New to your channel and just subscribed.
How much was the car and what was the mileage. Can we have an update on the car now? Still got it or sold it? Any issues since your road trip? Thanks
Hey! Thanks for subscribing. Ive still got it. It had to have a new camshaft sensors but that's been it. I might do an update video :)
High Peak Autos hey, thanks for replying. Update would be cool ☺️
Hi another great video, another totally dependable toyota like the land cruiser with no history you bought they know how to make reliable vehicles.
ian youd Yeah they definitely do!
I have a 1997 Rav4 VX auto with 105k on the clock. i have serviced it myself once a year since the cam belt and water pump were changed at 65K.. the nearside headlight level adjuster failed recently so I got a working replacement off an ebay breaker for £18 including p & p..... Great car...
Good to see you back !. I was getting a little bit worried i would be stuck with Supercarblondie here on UA-cam..
Anyway those Toyota' s will last, i think its the most sensible choice for a ( one direction) road trip in Andalufia.
it safe to leave your Toyota RAV on a airport parking lot for and pick it up the next year untouched.
hahahaahahah ive just done the same, travelling down to alicante to collect some items ive got there. i got a 2003 audi a4 avant 1.9tdi 130. been driving it a couple of week now and i can honestly say its brilliant averaging 55mpg on the motorway.all ive done is added cruise control and coded it, nice vid hyet again.
Wow diesels are noisy!!! Do you need DEF fluid for it too?
Imagine attempting that in a similarly priced, ages, maintained and mileage Freelander.
Forget Malaga, you'd be lucky to get to Malpas 😂😂
love little vids like this, thanks, love my toyotas just so dependable!!!
And no whippet nor john Smith fake video
Like your vlogs as they are sensible and informing without the bullshit from many others. I also have driven to Spain by car from Scottish Borders. In 2006 ( age 66) with a 1998 Subaru Outback with 165,000 on the clock and to Barcelona. Then again in 2011 in a Toyota Avensis with 158000 Mls, to Alicante. Both ran sweetly for the duration and both done within 72 hrs. The only reason to buy a new car is to impress your neighbours.
Thanks for watching. Whats that saying "theres many good tune played on an old fiddle:
Any idea of the best route to malaga from the North of Spain.
Bought a VW Transporter ,around 20 years old, diesel, I want to avoid Madrid as they have new restrictions there.
Any advice for a 11 hr journey ?
Bought the disco 3 with 100k on it and took 6 people to Rhine Valley, Budapest, Ljubljana, Lake Como, Colmar, Luxembourg, Brugge then back to Ormskirk via a stop off in Hampstead !, had to put some water in when I got back. Love a road trip ! furthest south in Spain I have been was Barcelona, you have me thinking.
My old 2001 disco 2 has been down to Spain and all over Scandinavia including the artic circle, I think I’ve clocked up 15 countries in it since we’ve owned it and it’s done it effortlessly!
Just arrived home from a 500 mile round trip around wales towing a trailer and it’s done it without fault..
Waited all this time and you give us the gem of the RAV 4 lol .
A bit warmer down there, but I prefer the Barcelona area, great but not extreme weather, and half the time driving to Calais! Will Brexit make the Qs intolerable? Tossing up whether to drive up this summer ... or just go Ryanair as usual
Another good video wish it was a bit longer..I know you like Land Rovers and I do but there’s no doubt why the United Nations went from Land Rovers to Toyotas.
Good video of a tough little car. My retired father has just bought a last of the old model RAV 4 hybrid. He holds onto his cars until they break so it sounds like it will see him out
Now 1 year later he own several cars including vogue. He is the new duke of Manchester.
Hahah thanks!
I really enjoyed this, Matt. My Dad has houses jn Marbella and Portugal, so anything of this nature is highly interesting.
I was about to come on here & play hell with you pal 😂 then I noticed this video, my inner troll has been restrained by the slimmest of margins! 😇
I just bought same model for 800. I love it. Cruise too. Miss my xtrail but I think it's better.
Just proves once again Toyota trumping Landrovers again..they even make female Rav 4s. 😂
Dude the tapas and night life in San Seb is epic! Check out all those lovely bars / streets! :-)
Thats my kind of a run out,You realise just how many cars there are on the road in England when you head way down thru the united states of europe
You speak like Gordon Ramsay :) Not sure it's a good thing or bad but I mean it as a compliment.
Sterling 0-1 .....mate your back !!!!
mikuelable I know! I’m watching it. I like the kit they’re in 💪🏼
If you showed the prepration of the car and filmed a bit more scenery, ould of got alot more views. Your commentary is good.
Scotty Kilmour is a fool, I'm a retired car sparks and some of his post are ignorance based rubbish.
....and my casio watch was trodden on, binned because screen useless but wailed for days in the dustbin till took hammer to it to stop horrendous noise! Sought of toyota like really!
h bethune Exactly!
Iam thinking of going to The Gambia by car. And delivering some Humanitarian Aid for the children who are in need
i've done that trip a few times in a diesel Montego. Hideous. So overloaded the headlights were picking out planes.
Hahaha I don't envy that
😂brilliant
Did the car get Spanish Reg? I have read post Brexit British reg cars in Spain are being stopped and checked...as are their owners.
Scotty Kilmer would approve of this vlog
Nobody..is scared to go a long way in a Toyota RAV4. whatever the age or condition..
3 days for 1400ish miles is crazy. Unless you stop in every other brothel
Enjoyed. Do this trip 2 or 3 times a year - Via Portsmouth / Bilbao. Love it!!
stephen vail/iow I’ve done that a few times too, but I get bored on the ferry for 36 hrs
@@HighPeakAutos From Manchester its a tough journey. For me at least twice a year for the past 15 years - Cannot do France and from IOW, its a no brainer and the views as you know are sensational and matched by the roads we payed for. Great channel - Keep going.
My destination Estepona on the beach at Bahia Dorada.
I owned one.. bu when the tank broke I part ex'ed it.... Toyota Rav 4D4... and loved it
