My first night camping in the new exoskeleton poled Nordisk Svalbard was pretty much the perfect test with some fairly high winds to give it a good work out. When it comes to the question of how it performs and whether I should keep it. It's a case of 'heads or tails?' in more ways than one.

just a heads up on ticks. Did you know that ticks can only climb "up" (not down) and always try to find the tallest piece of grass they can find. (In order to get picked up by passing animals) so I always stay clear of any tall grass or ferns.

Very disappointed with this new version, I’m going to go out on limb here and say they’ve actually made it worse! 🤷🏻‍♂️
My groundsheet doesn’t balloon up like that in my old version-1 Svalbard…
They do also tend to say this particular tent (not sure about their other products) is way lighter than it actually is, same story with the old one too. Which brings me on to the other thing that really bugs me about it, that is the pole sections that break down in far too long a sections, which makes it a very long sausage dog kind of pack - which can make it awkward to carry on/in of your pack..
Other than those things it’s not a bad tent really, and like I’ve said before such a great colour!! 👍🏻
They are right about pitching it door first into the wind though, as that is the most aero dynamic way, you wouldn’t get drafts then either as you can fully close off the mesh on the inner door panel..
I also have a Helm-1 Compact, which in MHO is a far better tent than this one.. Although I find I have more pitching options available to me with the Svalbard, especially when you just have a narrow strip of flat ground to pitch up on!

Yes i reckon had I turned it round it would have solved most problems but i wish they hadn't sculpted out the tail of the flysheet. A

Thank you for the review. The tent looked quite promising but the little scooped design of the flysheet that reduces its ability to keep in the warmth during winter is frustrating. I hope they don't add it to the SI version, but they've added it to the Halland PU 2.0 and Oppland PU 2.0 which doesn't bode well.

I think Hilleberg also recommend pitching the porch area of their tunnel tents against the wind, (which you touched on). That way, the porch takes the impact and compresses, with less impact upon the living/sleeping area..

I lad a we bit windy. Brings a whole new meaning to the words Air bed lol.
It held up great with the strong winds, however, a bit of a design floor. Just imagine if there were loess trigs and grass behind you, I think the tent would have quickly filled up.
You say on the next test you will put the door facing the wind, well even if that works it would be impossible to sit and cook in the doorway or vestibule.
Great video again matey. you da man. 👍👍👍👍

The TN voyager seems to work better with the porch into the wind which is not what you would expect.
I’ve added a few Velcro rip stop curtains in strategic net places on some tents, it gives more ventilation options 😊

Grwat tent test . Shame about the weight . Counter intuitive as u say . I would much prefer the wind from direction how you set it up , if you opened up the front with wind from that direction then the tent may take off never to be seen again ! . I really do like the colour thats a really nice brown

Hi Andrew, Another obviously honest review.
Unfortunately it’s all very well designing the tent to be wind resistant from one end (whichever one), but as we all know the wind doesn’t read the pitching instructions and can (and does) often change strength and direction during the night. Very disappointing and definitely not one for me I’m afraid. Good review though.

Great video Andrew. Gorgeous views. I know what you mean about the counter- intuivity of the pitch direction but if the guys that built It are pointing a whopping 42 m/s in their test facility then I reckon a second test (as you stated) is deffo worthwhile.

Thanks for the video as always Andrew! Love my old Nitecore NU20 headlamp, done me well for a few years now, would consider a new one, but its discontinued :( As for the ticks, they appear to be everywhere this year - taken 2 big ones off our dogs here in Ireland in the past couple of weeks - which is really unusual for round our house.

Nordisk need to listen to the costumer more, Like You I do like the new Svalbard tent but what has stopped me wanting to order one is I believe Nordisk have made a Major design floor in trimming to much material away from the skirting letting in to much cold air; I believe the tent being Named Svalbard should have wind & snow skirts fitted as a minimum requirement; As the foot end air vent is to open to the cold wind ingress to be rated 4 season named Svalbard. Otherwise would be a top tent I would look to buy.

At least Nordisk, as a tent manufacturer, make public their wind tests of their tents. Now a non-tent question from New Zealand branch: who is organising/paying for gravelling the track up Conic Hill? Is there a Scottish national parks authority or similar organisation?

I wanted/expected this tent to be better than the original and in some ways it appears to be. Hopefully nordisk will release a 4 season version or at least tweek this one to bring the fly down to the ground all around thus eliminating the through draught which as you pointed out, causes issues with warmth. Driving rain, spindrift or dust storms would be problematic as would the inner touching everything in high winds transferring condensation. Huge fan of the exo pole system for strength, and the single pitch is a big plus also. Personally I am a fan of the floor material, my Macpac has the best floor of all my tents and worth the weight penalty imho.
