KD has a TS of 67% and a 5-0 record against Jaden McDaniels. I'm not sure if it's a matchup that has bothered him all that much. He is a +110 in those games, which is huge for just 5 games.
To be fair, Ant has been the primary defender against KD and JMac was the primary defender against Booker, who hasn’t played very well when guarded by him

While ant has worse stats against the suns, it's mainly because the suns made like 0 effort to guard the outside shooters. The wolves just shot way worse than average. If they both play normally I think the wolves will lock up the suns.

The one thing analytics miss and many people forget is whilst the 3 point shot may be more efficient in volume, it is still less efficient as a standalone shot. So if you have gone multiple possessions without a bucket and you maintain your analytical approach then you are potentially forcing yourself into running cold and it's much better to just hit a higher efficient stand alone shot even if it is a midrange just to see the ball go in the basket and remove the pressure . Phoenix won't have that issue with how well guys are at getting to their spots and hitting their shots.
A mid-range shot may have a higher FG% than a 3pt shot, but the most efficient shots (both in terms of analytics and raw FG%) are layups and free throws.
The Suns generally drive less than other teams and they don't get free throws as much as a result due to their propensity for mid-range jumpers. So, if anything, they're more likely to go cold for extended periods than standard high level NBA offences because of that.
@ilexyellowdog you just repeated what I already acknowledged, I was just pointing my issue with that mind set. if they don't drive to the basket at all then yes but you are more likely to get free throws from mid range than you are from 3 pointers so again my point stands firm. If you gun down those 3s over opting for a higher % stand alone shot when you are beginning to slump then you are playing too analytically. Of course you'd want a free throw or a layup over anything but having that mid range shot is an absolute must in the playoffs and the reason I make this point is because too many people demonise it now. The boston celtics will be an interesting case study. Talent wise they probably should win but they go heavy with the 3s and because they aren't a great driving team either those mid range shots could become more valuable to them but If they have that 3 die by the 3 attitude then it could cost them a couple of games and that could blow their chances. Even if it's just 1 single mid range jumper that is classed as a bad shot just to see the basket go in and relief the pressure. Psychologically helps.
@@TheYates100 mid-range jumpers are similarly bad at getting you free throws as a three pointer because you aren't forcing contact (and with 3 pointers you at least have a better chance of them fouling via an over-eager close out).
The "analytical approach" isn't *only* 3s, it's about prioritising 3s, layups and free throws where the 3s make getting layups easier. The Suns aren't a good driving/free throws team, so they're more prone to going cold than teams that follow a more "analytical approach", the opposite of your original comment.

So if you are cold on 3s and teams are collapsing and let you hit them just move in and take a higher % mid range just to see the basket go in. That was my actual point. You started bringing in other things that I replied to.

Idk Rusty, I think you're just looking at the Lakers getting swept and concluding it must've been an easy series for Denver. All of those games were competitive and the Lakers had zero offense beyond LeBron. AD would give you 34 one night and 12 the next.

I would have to say that the Suns x factor is Nurkic. I don't think anyone expected him to play as well as he did this season and we literally can't win without him. A lot rides on him staying out of foul trouble and healthy while grabbing boards and defending, not to mention he's facilitated the basketball quite well at times. The other things the Suns need is to stay mentally strong, their focus has collapsed through out the season. I believe the suns can win, they probably couldn't have asked for a better matchup, but they gotta show they want it on the court.

I’d agree except the wolves were just playing offense, they didn’t change their approach at all on offense whereas I’m pretty confident they will when the games actually matter.

I agree with the notion that NAW is a much better option defensively, especially on Booker, but with Conley off of the floor who is running the offense? The Suns could overload on Ant and and force everyone else to execute offense which would inevitably lead to a boatload of turnovers. I know the Wolve's calling card is defense but I'm not sure sacrificing offensive efficiency is a winning formula against Phoenix

As a wolves fan theres a few things that terify me about this matchup. 1. McDaniels on paper should do well guarding KD but KD has cooked every single time weve played them. 2. We focus on guarding the paint and the perimeter, leaving the mid range wide open. This normally works because most teams worst shots are in the mid range, but the suns love shooting mid and there offense is designed around that. I think thats been our #1 ussue against them so far. The second we start clamping mid shots down they drain 3s all over us because we have to overcommit on the help.

I do think that while the Suns match up poorly against a lot of the contenders, the fact they have 3 elite mid range scorers is probably the absolute worst thing Wolves could ask for. KD's been a good defender this year, and if he locks up KAT (which he's been effective at all year, especially would be now since KAT's coming back from injury and isnt a 100% yet), then the entire weight of the offense has to rely on Ant and i dont think that's going to work. The Wolves will live or die by the offensive production of KAT and Ant

Hot take: I think I’ll be okay with KAT guarding Durant whenever both of them are on the court(and if Gobert is also on the court as well). Like idk who else you would want KAT to guard on the Suns starting lineup. Moving Gobert onto someone else other than the C playing would be kinda redundant, so no on Nurkic. Grayson Allen should absolutely be the last person that KAT should guard, terrible matchup for him on defense(and I genuinely don’t know why they went with that the last game), and you wouldn’t want him to guard Beal or Booker for obvious reasons. KD would definitely get his own on KAT, but having him guard would move someone like Conley to guarding Allen instead of Beal, which would help out Conley as well since Beal gives him a matchup issue on defense since Beal is a lot stronger than Conley, and he could out-muscle his way to get to a spot that he wants to get to. I would have Ant on Beal and JMac on Booker.

I think the Timberwolves will win in 6. I think they will go into the series having learned from their mistakes against the Suns during the regular season. They have the bodies to be able to defend what the Suns do offensively. The Suns have their number right now. If they can use the same schemes they used against Minnesota in the regular seasom to the same effect in this series, they'll win. However, I don't see the Timberwolves allowing that to happen 4 times in 2 weeks.

Not to bring down suns fans, but Minnesota shot TERRIBLY against the suns in the regular season and they had plenty of open 3’s as well. Minnesota has the third highest 3pt percentage in the nba and there’s no way their cold streak continues against the suns. If Minnesota can hit their open 3’s and stop the suns from walking off ant, there is no way the suns win.

I'll go Wolves in 6, think people are totally overreacting to the regular season games. Suns shot 55% from 3 in 2/3 of those games which is totally unsustainable for a series, also Phx has just crumbled under adversity all season long and I expect them to do so in this series. Also Denver is clearly better so nuggets in 5. Cavs in 5; the magic are just way too inexperienced and I trust cavs star power over magic youth.

Ant true shooting percentage is 57.3%. (only nba-average which is horrible for an franchise player)
Beside TS, you can look at ANT's offensive rating, defensive rating, VORP, PER.... they are all either just nba average or barely all star average
