I'm right there with you. 15 years using Max and I thought I was lighting fast already, and then I started using blender a year ago. And boom! I'm enjoying creating 3D art pieces again... Max is has a very slow UI, gotta wait for each render to start and finish, Vray is slow too.. but in blender, switching between editing modes, shading on viewport, eevee and cycles and gpu.. and everything works fast and smooth. It makes 3D enjoyable again!

Blender is soft of new generation, blender is the best soft.
In my story, I used 3D Max for about 4 years of self-learning, but when I got Blender turns out my skills dramatically increased. Reasons are,
1. I used Vray in 3D Max and waited for a couple of minutes to render a photorealistic model but in Blender real-time render and powerful node system including texture paint.
2. 3D max is heavy and not a lot user-friendly comparing to Blender, Blender doesn't look user-friendly at the start but get used to it you'll find yourself saving more time using shortcuts than you ever did in 3D max.
Cons
Don't push blender too far with low specs it'll crash and close, 3D Max will try to hold but ultimately freeze
*Get Blender it's free and only a couple of Megabytes but so powerful even without plugins, take time to get through the interface. You'll love it.*
Blender might crash, but at least you can always restore your work! (and save)

let me tell u guys a secrete, i was using max for almost 15 years, but i switched to blender, and why is that?
1: max is paid, and what they did in last 5 years? still trying to fix the chamfer modifier?
2: max is heavy,, i mean its big,, so big, i found that max 2021 is almost 8GB
3: it runs only on windows
4: without some plugin, i feel max is nothing
5: Blender is free

7: Blender easy to learn, it took just one week for me to learn blender

I'm a max user and oh boy do I love when I type absolutely anything with the words 3dsmax on internet and all I can find is some 7yo 4:3 video with a crappy mic, a nice dishwasher running in the background, 10FPS and 1 chances out of 2 it's not what I'm looking for or it is a demo of what he did !
It's really hard to learn a software with tons of bugs and missing features when you're all alone, didn't have such problem on Blender.

Zineddine agree with you, but also disagree. It’s an old dogma. This day, more and more studios switching to blender. Take Ubisoft, why do you think their cinematic division adapting it, also Tangent animation which is huge, I work in a relatively big animation studio and we also adapting blender, epic games mentions blender on quixel page, I know several indie game companies that using blender as their primary weapon of choice. A lot of freelance concept artists use blender since it’s fast has no problems handling ginormous scenes, and both cycles and especially eevee times faster than you can render with 3d’s native tools (I’m not talking about octane or redshift). It has its downsides, but they are so easy to overcome that you’ll do 10 iterations + fixes while waiting for 3ds to render 1 frame, while praying it not to crash.
Zineddine don’t get offended. I know how this industry works and I’m not saying blender will replace any giants (Houdini and Maya for sure). Arnold is an addon like everything else in 3ds. + it’s only trying to be gpu. I was just saying that blender becomes bigger than just underdog. It has huge potential. Tho I’m sorry, guess it was my misunderstanding on ubi part, however know for sure from people who work in game studio, that a lot of people there use blender, since it doesn’t harm the pipeline and they are pretty opened to allow using whatever for modeling as long as it’s installed by it and can export fbx.
I really just wanted a basic comparison of these two softwares and this video felt like a very reasonable presentation of that. Thanks!

Max had no modelling improvements....Just in the last 3 years that come to my mind:
-Data channel modifier for vertex/edges/polys lowlevel manipulation.
-More than 6 spline tools and modifiers recreated from scratch.
-Max creation graph: Advanced nodal interface to create custom modifiers.
-Improvements on performance on editpoly.
-weighted normals.
-chamfer modifer! (how you dare to forget chamfer modifier! :))
If you compare it with blender modelling tools (that are also great), some max advantadges:
-10x faster performance on edit poly on heavy meshes.
-10x faster performance on parametric modifiers.
-OpenSubdivs and crease sets that are actually usable.
-Edit poly as modifier (this one alone is huge).
-none destructive primitives.

@@666Azmodan666 No, Max has this. He wrote it as advantage from Max to Blender. And the with the advantages he is right. Blender need a huge upgrade in handle large polymesh objects. And the way that Maxs modifer stack works is in my opinion also better, even i think the modeling itself is in Blender faster.
Well, polygonal modeling is very good in Blender but Max has very powerful spline which is very useful in some cases.

I used max professionally for years. Even tho edit poly is really missed I find blender much more flexible, especially as I'm into mostly hard surface modeling with booleans.

The amount of shortcut keys in blender makes working in it so fast that I hate when I have to work on other softwares
Everybody gangsta until Blender announces the new version.. :) I mean jokes aside, even though Blender is not very beginner friendly or has some disadvantages like lack of interoperability with other softwares in industry, it's still as powerful as others in most ways. And i think these lacks wont matter in next few years(the most). Because both the community and software are growing so fast. And i don't even need to mention but... It's f*cking FREE!!
It’s not Blender that has the interoperability problem. Remember that it supports just about every open standard format available, including a few not handled well by the proprietary apps.
@Zineddine and how big it is you are saying? Last time i made a scenery with 60m polygons it ran good with 2.83 even had 1m tree particles at the side since i was making a procedural nature with apocalypse environment the GPU i am using is an RTX titan tho

I have used both. I could make a long list of reasons why I prefer Blender to 3Ds Max, mentioning only a few redeeming features of the latter, but I guess you could argue that most of it boils down to personal preference and professional demands. However, there IS one reason why Blender can be considered objectively better: Boot speed.
Software hardly crashes anymore these days, but 3D software remains an exception to that because of what it allows you to do (or try). With Blender you'll be right back into your scene within seconds. Not having to look at a loading screen for a whole minute can make a huge difference.
I love max, is my first love until I grew up and I had to pay that license, and vray, then blender came getting better with the interface an it was insta love. Blender had become a monster (in the best awesome way) now I can get the results I got with max and vray in no time, I work mostly architecturural scenes, the only thing I gotta fix is the tree models and I'm good to get "perfection" but I'm happy very very happy

@@stuck_in3D there is people doing amazing stuff with poor software tools, the trick is not be software-dependent, because with your logic Pixar could never have done something.

Being an indie game developer candidate nowadays. I was doing my research on such tools. I've used blender earlier and wanted to take some experince on 3ds max but the only thing kept me out is its pricing tbh.

Hello and thank you very much for your contribution. It's the other way round for me, I'm doing well in 3ds max, but I've been looking into Blender and thinking about learning it professionally, because out of the box you really get a great software for little (free?) money. Again and again I find myself jumping back to 3ds max because I know exactly how to quickly achieve this or that. Through friends I often got the feeling that I was working with an outdated software and that Blender is now "the thing". Now I don't have a bad feeling about continuing to work with Max, I will still play with Blender when I have time. Thanks for the video.
Just tried Blender recently, after 200K poly Blenders sub object selection slows down, after million ploy selection and navigation in sub object levels slows down considerably to around 3-6 seconds, undo is another show stopper. Meanwhile 3ds Max chugs on even with 25 million poly. Keep in mind this on a 2070 RTX, 3800X.

don't learn blender. in year or 2 hype dies down, and so is blender. but if you instlled it - your computer is already in blenders botnet, and you credit card info is in their hands too,

Blender doesn't have a botnet and doesn't steal people`s money (yet), but there are proofs it could/still can break your computer\fry your videocard alongside your motherboard. There also have been more and more developers popping up, saying Blender, an open source progamm, has bits and pieces of their code. Make of it what you wish - i warned you.

I'm not saying all salespeople are narcs. Just, it's a very common thing. Once you recognize it, you will begin to become more aware of who's around you and if they have ulterior motives.
Again, most people don't. Only 10% of the population is claimed to have this brain chemical whatnots that causes them to fuck everyone else to get simple brownie points. Try not to hate them, as they are wired to do that. But if you wanna manipulate them into benefiting everyone, go right ahead. They don't understand empathy, so use it to run around them in circles.

I've been doing classes for modelling , but they were using only max , anyway next week I'm done with the classes for good, I've been doing modelling for 6 months but nothing too crazy it was like 4-5hrs per week, lately I'm being super seriously digging and looking for things , and today I finally decided to download blender , thus far I've only made it donut , from a tutorial because I need to learn the program. First of all it's looking cleaner than 3ds Max rendering wise . But I might be wrong . But from that 6 hours I've used blender one thing that stood out for me was that it has scalping . The thing is freaking awesome , I wish 3DS max had scalping as well

This seems very similar to what's going on in the audio/music recording and production world. There are great newer tools that far outdo the older tools, but the older tools (protools) are "heritage" and are what have been integrated into the big houses for decades, even being MUCH clunkier, less capable, and packed with antiquated code.
im new to these 3d tools and i've used 3DS Max in the past and loved it, but i dont want to use a pirated version of this software im gonna try blender but i have any problems with blenders, i use to love 2.48 shortcuts since they changed i cant use it anymore, need to get used again

I use both and nothing can beat 3max on hardsuface modeling. Blender is good. For common items. But 3d max is too far superior for complex items.
Maybe u need to work on ur modeling skills a bit.. u rely too much on modifiers
No shit bro, that's why modifiers are there for. To make things more convenient.
You can use box cutter, hard ops and quad ramesher in blender for hard surface modeling those are paid add-ons btw.

Universities are expensive. If you are not sure, try learning online. If you then find the need for formal education, definitely go for it! But first, before spending tons of money on that, experiment with Blender and see if it really is what you want to do as a career.

Can't understand how 3ds max can't be better for modeling than Blender when it has Edit Poly modifier, FFD modifiers, powerful Spline and NURBS, just to name a few. plus its poly pushing performance is just light years ahead of Blender.
True to that, but the "poly pushing" award would be going to blender, Nudging stuff around using sculpt mode is priceless.
As you said, Blender seems to hate High poly in edit mode though yet it handles them fine in sculpt mode.
I bet it would get better (it already have quadrupled in performance in the last 3 years)
@@HAWXLEADER I respectfully disagree, you are comparing two workflows that are used for different purposes, check out Changsoo Eun's 250 million poly manipulation in 3ds max 2018, as good as Blender it still has a long way to go in poly performance.
Blender has lattices, an ok spline tool, and good luck keeping performance with 10 edit poly modifiers. Plus you have to look at addons like Hard ops or boxcutter, vanilla max doesn't even have regularizer. And to be honest, Blender's method of shortcuts is a hugely faster method of modeling than the infinite amount of menus you have to access in 3Ds max to do basic things. Just the ability to be able to go from hard surface to scuplting or vice versa is invaluable, plus the ability to both texture and render all in one software. Blender is constantly being developed, and it seems Max hinges on it's non-destructive workflow to remain relevant on the market.

I started with Autodesk animator and 3d studio in the late 80s/ early 90s. Blender started off slow but has really come into it's own. But the difference for me is the scalability with available plugins. I've made a lot of money over the years with Max. If I switched to Blender today, I couldn't produce things I was able to with Max and plugins.

I really want to love blender, I've been trying to swap to it for the past couple of weeks after being a max artist for 17ish years. Sadly i am seeing, very clearly, why max and maya are still the industry standards.

Blender "professional" currently learning 3ds max. Modelling in Max is a cruel joke compared to Blender. It's hard to believe some people still use this piece of junk to create objects. I'm dead serious when it comes to modelling max is at least 10 years behind. God knows why this is still considered to be industry standard.

@@AkimboFennec If you use Unity Blender is great, you simply click save on the blend file and you see the changes in game engine (great for fixing UVs and improving models on the fly)
Otherwise both will simply do FBX export and make ZERO difference.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as those 3Ds Max users who has yet to afford an indie subscription and is transitioning to Blender for the time being. It could've been me being bias but there are things I noticed Blender lacks that make me want to use 3Ds Max. For example, there are some shading areas that need to be fixed, although there are ways to fix shading one of them is by editing the normals, 3Ds Max gives more control via their Edit Normals modifier by choosing a single normal from a vertex with split normals and affect only that normal, Blender on the other hand you have to affect all split normals on a single vertex. Another one is deformation, in 3Ds Max you can have 100% control on the outmost vertices on the corners of the cube with the modifier FFD Box; whereas in Blender you create your cube and then you create a lattice the exact same size of the cube, put the lattice modifier onto the cube, but when you drag the vertices of the lattice the corresponding vertices of the cube doesn't follow 100%; honestly I could go on but 3Ds Max has tons more modifiers than Blender and personally I find 3Ds Max to have better non-destructive options than Blender.
@@DexterBacchus-tb4ui thing is as a hard surface modeller I find 3ds max to provide better tools, sure Blender can serve as a Swiss army knife in every 3d aspect be it hard surface modelling, character design, animation but as a hard surface modeller who wants to get into the game industry 3ds max just has the tools I mostly need for that aspect and to practice an industry standard software would better prepare me for that.

I was glad to try Blender. Tried C4D free for a month. But the difference to me is that Blender is completely free and there are sooo many free tutorials on youtube...,"how do I ...";click..the answer's there. The fact is that for someone starting in CG, there's no substitute for all the info available for blender; it's invaluable. And Blender is pretty responsive; it does what it's supposed to do. Well, that's my perspective.
Better one is one have larger population in future. I use 3dsmax,but I think Blender will take over sake of running cost by each studios.

ZBrush doesn’t do true 3D, though. It’s more of a 2½D.

Zineddine No it‘s not. They use a patented technique called Pixols that essentially means working with Pixels that have additional information instead of actual 3D geometry. This is why Zbrush can run entirely on the CPU and handle this absurd amount of Polygons that other software like Blender can only dream of. It actually is not real 3D even if it looks like it.
@@NymezWoW it's not that unique after unrealEngine made something similar called NANITE. And unreal is source available so the algorithm is pretty much public. It's a matter of time Blender has something similar, though it will use some decent GPU compute, that's not a big problem due to growing power of eGPU s these days

True. I am on 3ds Max since 1994...3D studio 1.0 for MsDOS. I dropped learning blender after I could not go back to my original model after a couple of edits.

Max also handles better modelling on curved surfaces because he has an extra face editing constrain. Also only until recently a set flow addon was finally made available by a guy for blender. You only know how much you missed them after you get to try them.

@@zzrgio Maya ofc ? Autodesk started to have very good pace of improvements. Max and Maya started to share the deveopment. The new built in retopology tools and all the improvements that are either in max, in beta or for future plans in Max roadmap is way more impressive then what Blender small team can achieve.
I like Blender, but it has such a complicated way to deal with smoothing groups. In 3ds Max it's: Hey, just click on the faces that you want to have a special group and that's it. In Blender you need to click years through your model and seperate every smoothing group with edge select and tell him to do seems and so on. It's really annoying and time intensive.
I love Blender, but it has some stuff that could be so much easier.

@@TarnkappenToast You can easily manage smoothing by setting autosmooth to 180 and marking edges as sharp
@@jamesc2683 Jup, that was the workflow i just described. In 3ds Max you just select the faces that you want to have an own group and hit a button and in Blender you need to fiddle every edge out and mark it as sharp. I am doing it right now and it's one of the most annoying workflows ever. It could be so much less time consuming but it isn't.
The problem is there isn’t enough architectural tutorials on blender im struggling with finding even architectural courses on it 😞

Question is not so much what you think but what companies use and expect you to master. If hoping for a job that is.
I’m transitioning from 3ds Max to Blender because I simply can’t afford Max anymore. Aurodesk’s subscription plans are insane. They have abandoned the regular user focusing solely on the high income bracket. I held onto my student version of Max 2011 for as l could but at the end the program was so broken it was almost unusable.
That being said, Blender is great but Max is better. The ine thing that annoys me the most with Blender is the myriad of hotkeys you need to memorize. Max has hotkeys too, but there is ALWAYS a corresponding visual UI for each. Blender doesn’t have that, making some of the most basic features (that you took for granted in Max) ridiculously hard to access. You could go for years not knowing a feature even exists, unless you like to memorize pages and pages of hotkeys and their sometimes extremely vague descriptions in the Blender pdf. I know this because one of the most common sentences I read on Blender tutorials is ”wow I didn’t know you could do that!” - and that’s from users with years of experience. This is a complete failure by Blender devs.
So yeah I’m reluctantly getting into Blender, but I know that even when I have years of experience, I wouldgo back to Max in a heartbeat if given the chance.
This was two years ago, I am curious how you're feeling about it today? Do you still use Blender? Have you grown to like it more? Or have you switched back to 3ds Max?
This is a great question. I stand by what I said about some features being stupid difficult to access that you took for granted in 3dsMax.
But I was also frustrated, and was pretty much dragged out 3dsMax amd into Blender kicking and screaming. Now I use Blender daily, and it’s now part of my muscle memory same as Max was. I think I’d be rusty if I went back to Max now. I wouldn’t mind some streamlining, but there is no doubt that Blender is amazing and can do pretty much anything that Max can do for the price of… on the house. You just can’t beat that. It’s now part of my workflow. Max is out forever.

you may get by with learning autocad and focus on blender for visualising renders, Autocad is the big one if you just want drafting work

i use 3d max to create maps and export to fbx ... now trying the same in blender, but the texturing part is awful ... i need no uv unwrap just a simple image material apply and scale for my meshes, with default box projection ... in blender you have to put together more complex node based material to do the same, and they always end up no wrapping around the edges properly

I have been playing with a few. The Octaneblender option is a good compromise on the rendering side of things. Blender render engine cannot compare to Arnold in max. On the other hand when you are using octane there are a lot of features missing, to get that photo realistic look. And how many on here are actually PAYING for 3ds max. I cannot be spending actual money on that. I can use a cracked version but not my style. Realistically. everyone is going to defend the one they know best. And professionals who work in a studio will normally have to use what they use, and just get used to it. Only freelancers can be choosy. But its true that Blender cannot handle lots of polygons, even on my good system. I get so worried when I throw big stuff in there. I have spent so much time learning blender sometimes wish I invested that time in another one, but price-wise, Max is out of my league. I went through the trial and tried some complex modelling and Blender can do a lot of it but when you know the software you come up with ways to make it work and keep SAVING the file like a mofo! before scene says bye bye.

industries in future ?
yes, its already used in a small capacity in some larger studios although nowhere near close to taking over for general usage.
for small VFX and indy game studios blender is often the goto modelling tool and animation editor / compositor.
As someone who works in both tools: Blender is a little boy trying to be his big sister Maya and big brother Max. Blender is young but growing fast. He can replace his brother and sister in near future.

When your first learned software is 3ds max and blender is 2nd then it's very tough to choose one , I vote for both
@@renat_CIA blender supporters get paid too, also not all the money you give to max may go to developing max and a good portion might just go to ceo's of autodesk and believe me, there is no chance the max developers care about their software as much as blender developers and community do.
don lll Doesn‘t really matter, both Max and Maya have a dev team behind them thats multiple times the size of the Blender one. Without the financials of a company like Autodesk you simply can‘t compete.

Both 3Ds Max and Maya are used so heavily in various industry they won‘t go away any time soon. Both together are basicly the Industry Standard for everything, except maybe Houdini in VFX.
Softimage was also heavily used. Yet that didn’t stop Autodesk from killing it off.

Today 3dsmax is a fully equipped program that gives me absolutely everything for work and creativity and a hundred thousand extra sweets, I'm full and I don't need anything!) I don't even look in the direction of Houdini anymore. As for the blender, I tried to open a scene with a mouse by the fireplace, but it slowed down a lot and I delete it, the lack of good rigging was especially disappointing
I'm more of a Max user. Easy to model with real object dimensions. I wish Blender does have the same exact feature, like changing the L x W x H as exact as it can be.

@@vowel8280 It means that once you created a primitive yo ucan't modify it's dimension changing it's cm or meters, but scaling, it's quite different, ence it's called "destructive" metod.

If you make a primitive, sure they do not remain parametric, but you can still change their dimensions in real units, you have this under the scale
But still any company doesn't work in main important thing. we need next level rendering technology to render faster and realistic. we still have same old traditional slower rendering technology

If there is anything where 3ds Max really shines, compared to other 3d Softwares, it is modeling. And saying that modeling improvements have not been made is simply not true. Ok, you are pushing Blender, and that is cool. But, give the credit where credit is due...It is like saying that Blender is better for motion graphics than C4D.
The only things who miss on them is CAD modeling. Sometimes it's a faster start than primitive / freestyle.

The closest you can get to this is typing in distances when you move/extrude stuff.
Also CAD Tools can get you the "relative to" constraints from CAD style modeling (Ex: put this face of this object 5 cm from the face of the other).
Theres a plugin for that.

3DS Max is a better tool overall - there's nothing it can't do or that can't be done with it. If what you want isn't available, you can write Maxscript / Python or use node based MCG to write your own modifiers and commends. I have been using it for many many years, and I am still finding new things and new ways of doing things that have been there most of the way along. I will say though that its really hard to learn properly if you don't go to school for it.
That said, its too expensive, and with the exception of the 2021 update, Autodesk is lazy when it comes to improving it and fixing bugs (that said many "bugs" aren't bugs, but just appear that way when people use this software incorrectly). It seems the fast development of Blender finally lit a fire under Autodesk's ass recently, the 2021 update has some pretty incredible upgrades - especially in character animation arena.
But ... Blender is free, has a great set of tools, is always being developed, has a great support community, and its free. Did I mention its free?

On of the big things the Blender developers must fix is the handling of big files. To work in Blender with displacementmaps is a pain. It took ages until the rendere has computed the picture and start to render. I installed the Blenderversion of Octane render and wow, the same scene, the same displacementmaps an the render starts three seconds after hit the renderbutton. And if you want to create a big enviromentscene with a lot of geometry, Blender is also not the best choice for that. Max or Maya have his disadvantages and may odschool, but they can handle a big amount of geo, and that is especially in the feature film branche a must have. The developers are implement a lot of new tools and toys, but they must also improve the core of Blender.
Octane is awesome especially with texture and vertex displacement but the node options are lacking big time and other functions, not to mention you can't really use any plugins. My biggest fear tho, is, what if I spend time creating a project in Octaneblender and it stops being free??

I'm learning 3d and I'm using Blender, I hVE a friend who is learning 3d max in the university, I spoke with him if I should try to learn 3d max and he said that I should stay with Blender XD he hates max, from what I understand is a bit difficult and too much work sometimes.
I remember when my sister study 3d max too, and she said that a lot of the things you have to do manually in 3d max there usually a more easy way to do it in Blender, or at least, better shortcuts.
But overall, I don't know XD since I have never use it, AND I'm too new to this.

the 3ds max value proportion has always been an issue for me and as blender improves it only gets worse. I’ve always felt that the best max features were its user developed plugins along with features ported from maya - It begs the question then; what are you paying for when you buy a seat for max? an ever more bloated install file and an ancient UI? Autodesk has no real incentive put resources into max when it’s made redundant by maya. I think max’s days are numbered

About Blender: I keep banging into "doesn't work" problems trying to do basic things. Are terms slapped on the 10,000 or 100,000 functions too odd/mystical/cryptic, more than other such programs have? Is it not reasonable to look for flow, logical connections between functions and parts? It's a hive, with wasps and bees and hornets and flies and more, scattered all over, and of course, with attics and basements and outhouses. At my sadly low level, at least, Blender is a scattershot program of function names and connections, very difficult to get a grasp on after such easy ones as "Insert cylinder" or "insert background," etc.
I watched several surveys, and it seems that best hope at novice level is 3 DS, trying for flying scenes with pilots in helmets and in cockpits, and simple dia/monologues. Flying all over, landing, being shot at and hit. Realist approach, and simple enough to "get er done" promptly, not next year. What could possibley go wronf with thak!
