- So in this video I am going to show you how to set up Thinkorswim and the TD Ameritrade website so you can trade Pre-Market and After-hours.
Basically Premarket stats at 7am EST, Then normal trading hours run from 9:30am - 4pm, and then After Hours run from 4pm - 8pm.

In what situation would you use “join the bid” over “buy the ask”? Do you use “sell the bid” when you are ready to take profit (or close either way)?
If you join the bid you will have to wait for someone to sell into your order, if you buy the ask you will buy from someone selling on the ask. I don't use sell the bid personally, I use 'join the ask' to close a position and if the stock suddenly drops I just 'Flatten the order' which basically sells at market (but is only available during open market hours)

why would you want to have buy bid button? but no sell button at all?
so basically you only can execute ask, bid and limit orders in extended hours and not Stop Limit order based on your preferred trigger price point.

So, I don't understand.. When you place a Pre-Market order; Does it get executed immediately that moment and in real time or at 9:30am when the market opens? Can you Buy and Sell Pre-market?? And at what price the order will go thru The price of the stock when you place the Pre-market order at 7 am or the price of the stock at 9: 30 AM???
Yes you can trade pre-market action from 7am with ThinkorSwim ( so yes you can buy and sell shares). The price will go through at the price listed at the time you place your order pre-market.
Just be careful as sometimes volume is very light and it can be hard to get out of a trade if it goes against you
I wonder why there is no ALL HOURS option
How do you set up an oco order when you enter during market hours with those oco get activated on pre and post market trading ?
I'm not sure to be honest as I've never used an oco order.

This does help a lot, but how do I get the charts to show extended hours price action??? I'm getting frustrated bc I'd like to see what the prices are doing pre market, but can't seem to find out how to make the charts show it? Thanks in advance
When you are logged in to thinkorswim go to Style>Settings then select the Equities, Options, and/or Futures tab and check the box next to 'Show Extended Session'.
@@dannyshep thanks for responding... I appreciate it. I found it but one of the stocks I ws looking at had nothing after market close. Does this mean there IS NO extended trading on that stock? Also, please forgive my questions, when I try to scan pre-market... say % change.. nothing is coming up? Why is that? How do you scan pre market??? Thanks again!
@@twrecks4598 It is possible that the stock you were looking at after hours had no volume at all, so no trades going through.
As for a stock scanners there are plenty of good options.
The first is a free stock scanner that is delayed by 3 mins called 'Stocks Rocks' at: ua-cam.com/video/8O8M73JZAzg/v-deo.html
They also offer a paid service for real time data.
Another option is 'Warrior Trading' = www.warriortrading.com/
He has a great UA-cam channel with tons of educational content, and his course has a real time scanner as well.

thanks for the great video! one question: I did as shown to cover a short trade and am stuck on wait TRG on Meta in after hours. I d like to take my good profit but instead get a Wait TRG... I m confused as Meta should be a liquid stock relative to a 10k$ buy (to cover a 10k$ short)... Is this normal ?
Thats is a bit weird, I've never had that message come up when trading, and yes Meta should fill pretty quickly.
Maybe do a quick restart of ThinkorSwim? or if that doesn't work try call the customer service line on 1 (866) 839-1100. They are usually pretty good to deal with.

Great vid.. Quick question. If I change the settings to premarket and place an order premarket.is it executed there n then or do I have to wait until the market opens at 9am for it to be filled???
Only because on some platforms I buy a share but the market opens the share price instantly rises THEN my order is placed.. So I miss the increase
On TD Ameritrade It will make the trade pre-market, or after-hours depending when you are trading.
what if you didn't have it set up pre or post market, will it still take you out if it hit your price ordo you have to wait till market opens next day?

If I buy aapl in after hours on one day and then sell it in pre market the next day is that considered a daytrade?
I dont believe so as it is the next trading day.

They will fill pre market, just be careful when trading pre market or after-hours as you cannot sell 'at market' (basically, if there is no volume you can get stuck in a trade)

In TOS, do you need to change the TIF setting for intraday trading once you flip it to GTC+EXT? Doesn't GTC also cover DAY?
I personally do chance it just so there is no issue whilst I am trading during market hours.
I don’t see the extended hours option
If you watch the video from 1:04 it shows you how to add the "'TIF" (time in force) option so you can then trade pre markets and after hours.

Great video. One question. If you set the sell price over the ask, will it fill immediately or only when the price goes up through the price you set?
From my experience it will sell at the given price at the moment you place the trade (but I could be wrong) just be careful pre-market or after-hours as some time there is very little volume and it can be really hard to get out of a position.

Hello. Webull broker can do pre-market?
I believe so, and I think it starts earlier than ToS
Normal trading hours are 9:30 AM until 4pm ! He said "stating 9am" several times which isn't accurate.
Which buttons do I use to sell in premarket ?
If you watch the video from 2:10 I show you which buttons you need to add to be able to trade pre-market.
You will need to add “buy ask” and “buy bid”
I forgot to add that you will need to add the button “Join the ask” so you can actually sell the shares pre market.

On TOS mobile what is the position effect [to open] or to [close] in order to buy premarket. It seems like it’s not letting me and saying working when it’s on the price I want to purchase

ive got a question, lets say i buy a stock 2 minutes right before market close at $1 a share and put a stop loss at $0.9 and it hits 0.9 in after hours, does it sell my position? or does it wait till market opens and sell even if its at 50 cents below my stop loss? and also td ameritrade doesnt have full extended hours trading so will stop loss orders fill at lets say 7pm est?
I don't believe you can sell with a stop loss during pre-market or after hours.
Those features only work during open
market hours. (9.30am-4pm est).
And yes TD start premarket at 7am which is a bit later than some platforms that have access to start at 4am,.
how do you sell in premarket?
Make sure you select GTC_EXT, and then make sure to add the button 'Join the Ask' or 'Sell the Bid'.
This will allow you to sell in premarket.

@@JoyofArt Join the ask is offering to sell your shares at a price you deem reasonable whereas selling at the bid will fill the order at what a seller is offering to buy at.

Does this enable the candlesticks to show up in PM and AH as well in the trade and charts tab? I am currently unable to see the candlesticks form in those tabs. Is there a different box that needs to be checked possibly? Thanks.
It should show the charts (candle sticks) always.
Just make sure you set the chart style to candle and it should work.
Does the work on the your phone?
Yes it does, just make sure on your app you have "Limit" selected, then just below where it says "cost of trade" it will have 'TIF' on the left side of the screen, then tap where it says 'Day' on the right side of the screen until it shows "GTC_EXT" And this should allow you to trade pre-market and after hours

Make sure it is set to "GTC_EXT' if you are trading premarket or after hours. Also the shares need to be available to buy for the order to go through.
I cant even get the tabs on the right of the screen to choose "active trader" to appear. No tabs, how do I get to them?

So you can’t place actual trades on demand where you can see profit and loss of movement if markets is not open? And you can start trading on TD premarket? I don’t have to wait until 9:30am? to buy spy options?
Im not sure about options, but you can start trading from 7am EST Pre Market with ThinkorSwim, but you can only place ask orders as the actual market isn't technically open. So its good to be a bit careful if you haven't done it before as you cant just close an open position if there is no volume (no Buyers or sellers)

It is different for certain platforms, TD Ameritrade starts pre market trading from 7am EST where a Webull starts pre market at 4am EST
With the buttons in think or swim, what about selling? you added two buy buttons and no sell
This set-up was just for the tutorial, I don't use this actual setup when trading, I usually have - Buy The Ask & Join The Ask -Buy Market & Sell Market

Selling quickly in premarket is only possible if there is a lot of volume in the stock you are trading.
Just be super careful!

You will need a different broker as TD Ameritrade only starts premarket at 7am.
I believe WeBull starts at 4am.
And there are other options out there.

If you want to sell pre market it will need to be the red button that says "Join the ask" or "Sell ask"
To find the button click the gear icon where the buy and sell buttons are and you will be able to add it to from the "available items' to the "current set"

Yes you can use the app to trade pre market and after hours, if you go to place an order and then look just below where it says "Cost of Trade" you can select wether you cwant to trade "DAY" or "GTC" or "EXT" or "GTC EXT" - choose "GTC EXT" for premarket or after hours

Ok, this is to buy in premarket and aftermarket, everything was perfect and when you sale, do you use the regular sale click bottom?
if its premarket or after-hours it will have to be 'Join the Ask' button. If its during Market hours it can be either 'Sell Market' or' Joint the Ask'

As far as I know I don't think you can, but I could be wrong.
You cannot trade or exercise options outside of normal market hours.
@@gellokd5719 yes you can. Only certain options you can trade from Sunday 8pm until Friday 8pm. There are a few options you can do 5/24s

Ameritrade's website sucks. Tiny window and they don't show you how much you own of a stock you are selling and they don't do auto calculations to see how many shares equal in total money spent until you click to the next window. I use Vanguard which is was better.
